  • See the .243 Winchester perform beyond its maximum supersonic range. Although our A-Max loads go subsonic soon after 1,200m and our tables only show drop data out to 1,200m, we thought we'd max out the ELV knob on our SWFA SS10X scope to see what would happen. Spotting for such a small projectile at this range is exceedingly difficult - especially the skinny and sleek Hornady .243 A-Max which cuts through the air with minimal vapor trail. My longest confirmed hit with this load has been 1,375 on the same type of target. DinosaurEatchYa almost beat me this time at 1,420. The .243 A-Max seemed to penetrate the transonic barrier with little disturbance, and although no solid hit of the plate was observed the dispersion was less than 1moa - 200m beyond the barrier. This was surprising. Expect more testing on this 1,420m target in the future.
    Rifle: Ruger M77 VT .243 Winchester
    Scope: SWFA SS10X
    Load: 105 gr Hornady A-Max w/ 43.1 gr RL-19, CCI Primers
    Final ELV setting at this range was 74 moa.

    PS: Setting up that target was an experiece all its own. We would have taken more video on the slip and slide action, but our cakeras would not have made it. 1.4 clicks one-way, up and down steep slopes slicker than snot on a door knob, carrying that jagged heavy steel was certainly an adventure to remember - but never repeat. The target stays put from now on.

    Great question, sir! Guille suits can be very cumbersome and can make operating a firearm efficiently very challenging, thus A LOT of training underneath that mess of burlap is essential if one ever wants to be able to use that kind of camouflage system in a real world situation down the road. It’s best to learn how to use it when the stakes are low. Always train like you fight!

    Very nice, cool video. BUT paint that plate so you can confirm your hits. Leaving it all peckered up then shooting at it makes it into a guessing game after you shoot. Takes 10 seconds to paint it after you place it.

    Many years ago, we were shooting at beer cans at 600 yds. with a Custom 30-06 Springfield. We didn't always hit them, but when we did, we really thought we were doing something special. BUT THIS? I think the word is indeed AWESOME.

      I love knowing guys like you are out there for National Security reasons. It was the knowledge of Civilian Riflemen that kept the Japanese from our Homeland in 1941-42.

      Jingo Bells Yamamoto supposedly made that statement... i have my doubts as to whether or not it was ever said....... Regardless, Armed US citizens in definitely not the reason for the Japanese never invading the Continental US....

      rainmechanic No,? I suppose Geronimo didn't hold off the US Cavalry for years , and the Sioux and their associates didn't wipe out Custer's outfit either! It is amazing how people can reconstruct history to fit their own beliefs, often disputing the testimony of others who were actually there. If you actually talked to Yamamoto, then your statement has some credence, otherwise it does not. My old friend's name was Yasutake... Does that give you a clue?

    • @rainmechanic
      @rainmechanic 9 років тому

      I stand by what i said... Regardless of whether or not Yamamoto said it or not is irrelevant to the argument... And since you would like to engage me on WWII history .. Please tell me what secret knowledge kept the USA from wanting to engage the Japanese in a conventional Invasion?

    • @josephbotts1371
      @josephbotts1371 9 років тому +1

      rainmechanic Sorry... I have no inside information on that, so I would have to get it out of a book and you have probably already done that. I would rather talk about shooting, since that is the subject of the video.
      If your interest is in world history, there are some great channels that deal with it.

    Great cartridge - nothing wrong with it - does exactly what it was deisgned to do very well - it also served Carlos Hathcock very well. Its important to note that there are some opinions out there that beg to differ with that statement based on sound engineering arguments - but 'practically speaking' the cartridge is just fine and has plenty of accuarcy potenetial to get the job done - iIF the user knows whats going on :-)

  • @TiborasaurusRex
    @TiborasaurusRex  11 років тому +2

    .308s are pretty forgiving when you shorten them up when COMPARED TO some of the hotter cartridges out there. 18" is still pretty short for a .308 if you want to get good long range performance. 20 or 22” would be my minimum length recommendation in this cartridge for LR purposes.
    About 25” is ideal in my opinion (all things considered).

    I used the Ruger M77 in 243 for years it had a heavy barrel cut to 18" I bought it used. It was an amazing rifle I shot ever thing from 87gr to 60 gr all shot good I settled on 65 gr Hornady. I finely went to .204 for the economy of shooting. I shot 840 rounds a year through my .243 for years on end before selling it. Killed a lot of ground squirrels at long distances.

    Hi Tibor. Just wondering about .243 twist rates... What grains can a 1in10 handle and also a 1in8.
    I'm shooting a (basic no accu-trigger) Savage 11 in .243win, with a 1in9.25 twist and it shoots just a lil over .5moa with any factory loads from 58gr to 100gr.
    Once it's barrel is finished I want to change it with a replacement bull barrel and I can only find 1in10 and 1in8 twists with out going with a custom barrel.

      @ajfam871 8 років тому +1

      I believe he said this rifle was a 1/9. He also said that Hornady used a 1/10 when developing this bullet. To be safe if you building with a new barrel go 1/8 for best results, if you are going to use 115 grs go 1/7. I too am looking and have done an embarrassing amount of research. The best factory rifle will be a Savage 11 they have a 1/9.25 twist. if I don't get that I plan on getting and R700 rebarreling it with a 22" barrel with a 1/8 twist .

    Having a glance back in time Rex at this incredible shot. Quickload shows this shot possible at supersonic speed with the ideal load. I will have to dig it out sometime and share it.
    I have an idea now with current Drone technology. How about we set up a drone that can hover equipped with 4k GoPro and video telemetry. Ya! Then provision it as well with some sort of paint spray gun to touch up your plates! Wow write this down, it's worth $20.... but you heard it here first.

    We are using 105 A-Maxs, they need a 1:9" to stabilize. Stability depends on a number of factors, including weight distribution, length, MV, air density, and a few other things, so there's no set weight to twist ratio that a guy can look at that is 100% honest. Consult the bullet manufacture’s recommended twist rates for the best answer :-)

    Greenhill Formula for most standard cartridges is T=150(d/r). With muzzle velocity of more than 2,800 fps, substitute 180 for 150. 90gr Nosler AccuBond, which has a diameter ratio of 4.407 (1.071 inches long divided by .243), looks like this T=180x(.243/4.407), which gives us a 1:9.9 twist rate. I got my bullet specs from Midwayusa. This was just an example, but playing around with the formula and different grains should give you more insight.

    Have you ever experienced a cartridge that your 243 seemed to hate? I have a Rem 700 VLS that shoots pretty well. Once I tried to sight it in with 100gr Winchester Ballistic Silver tips. After 2 boxes I had not shot a group tight enough to even call a group let alone make a scope adjustment for. This was at only 50 yards. It was everywhere on a 12" target. I put in a couple of the rounds I had already been hunting with and laid them almost on top of each other so I know my scope was not a prob.

      Thanks, I was curious since we rarely get more than 100 yard shots where I live. I recently went through Nebraska and they have a lot of open land as well. I've heard SD is a beautiful State.

    wow what spotting scope are you using let along scope to see out that far? For real are you using some space telescope like some 40x150mm tasco --I have never found any spotting scope that really sees past 1000 yard with precision and super detail ?

      Try a Swarovski ATX wih the 95mm objective. I sell them and I looked at a house on a mountain about 10km away and I could tell you what kind of car was in the driveway. Pretty amazing stuff.

      John Russell All together you're looking at around $5000. $6000 if you buy a swarovski tripod to go with it.

      chickensodelicious I'm way too ghetto for that one have to stick to cheap man's scope for about 450 dollars? Just plain Leupold for me?

      John Russell Spend a little bit more and get a Vortex Diamondback. They're around $500 and the warranty is unmatched as far as the optics industry goes. Plus it's got really good glass for the money.
