- See the .243 Winchester perform beyond its maximum supersonic range. Although our A-Max loads go subsonic soon after 1,200m and our tables only show drop data out to 1,200m, we thought we'd max out the ELV knob on our SWFA SS10X scope to see what would happen. Spotting for such a small projectile at this range is exceedingly difficult - especially the skinny and sleek Hornady .243 A-Max which cuts through the air with minimal vapor trail. My longest confirmed hit with this load has been 1,375 on the same type of target. DinosaurEatchYa almost beat me this time at 1,420. The .243 A-Max seemed to penetrate the transonic barrier with little disturbance, and although no solid hit of the plate was observed the dispersion was less than 1moa - 200m beyond the barrier. This was surprising. Expect more testing on this 1,420m target in the future.
Rifle: Ruger M77 VT .243 Winchester
Scope: SWFA SS10X
Load: 105 gr Hornady A-Max w/ 43.1 gr RL-19, CCI Primers
Final ELV setting at this range was 74 moa.

PS: Setting up that target was an experiece all its own. We would have taken more video on the slip and slide action, but our cakeras would not have made it. 1.4 clicks one-way, up and down steep slopes slicker than snot on a door knob, carrying that jagged heavy steel was certainly an adventure to remember - but never repeat. The target stays put from now on. - Розваги
Great question, sir! Guille suits can be very cumbersome and can make operating a firearm efficiently very challenging, thus A LOT of training underneath that mess of burlap is essential if one ever wants to be able to use that kind of camouflage system in a real world situation down the road. It’s best to learn how to use it when the stakes are low. Always train like you fight!
This is wild... and you're so calm about it. If I hit a target that far - I would be jumping up and down ---
Very nice, cool video. BUT paint that plate so you can confirm your hits. Leaving it all peckered up then shooting at it makes it into a guessing game after you shoot. Takes 10 seconds to paint it after you place it.
i had no idea the .243 would preform out that far. that's amazing.
You bet it will shoot that far great round .
Mark and Sam after work channel. 243 shot out to 3000y
Remember the 243 is a necked down 308 and good ballistic coefficient with the heavier bullets
I’ve watched your channel enough to know that the .243 is an underrated round by most people for long range shooting. How come you did not paint the target before so you could see your hits better?
Damn, GREAT shooting, GREAT call. Excellent vid! Thanks for sharing this one.
Amazing. The elevation call was apparently made intuitively. Remarkable skill.
You can't appreciate 1000+ yards until you walk it and see it in person...nice shooting!
Tib…your killing me…AWSOME MARKSMANSHIP…Love your attitude kid!

Many years ago, we were shooting at beer cans at 600 yds. with a Custom 30-06 Springfield. We didn't always hit them, but when we did, we really thought we were doing something special. BUT THIS? I think the word is indeed AWESOME.
I love knowing guys like you are out there for National Security reasons. It was the knowledge of Civilian Riflemen that kept the Japanese from our Homeland in 1941-42.
Jingo Bells Yamamoto supposedly made that statement... i have my doubts as to whether or not it was ever said....... Regardless, Armed US citizens in definitely not the reason for the Japanese never invading the Continental US....
rainmechanic No,? I suppose Geronimo didn't hold off the US Cavalry for years , and the Sioux and their associates didn't wipe out Custer's outfit either! It is amazing how people can reconstruct history to fit their own beliefs, often disputing the testimony of others who were actually there. If you actually talked to Yamamoto, then your statement has some credence, otherwise it does not. My old friend's name was Yasutake... Does that give you a clue?
I stand by what i said... Regardless of whether or not Yamamoto said it or not is irrelevant to the argument... And since you would like to engage me on WWII history .. Please tell me what secret knowledge kept the USA from wanting to engage the Japanese in a conventional Invasion?
rainmechanic Sorry... I have no inside information on that, so I would have to get it out of a book and you have probably already done that. I would rather talk about shooting, since that is the subject of the video.
If your interest is in world history, there are some great channels that deal with it.
Yes. Some ammo just doesn't work in some rifles. Usually a harmonic issue.
once again Rex showing you can shoot long distance with even the smaller calibres.i personally love my 243 calibre and to be able to do a long shot for fun is quite an achievement.
That was Skill, beyond the range of the Weapon
I use a .243 for hunting in Arkansas. Had gun built with a heavy contour air grafted barrel and I think I could compete with this. A very good bullet for light hunting.
What was your muzzle velocity with the 105s ty
And that's why i love the 243! It goes far beyond other "Heavy" caliber. This is a must shoot!
Great cartridge - nothing wrong with it - does exactly what it was deisgned to do very well - it also served Carlos Hathcock very well. Its important to note that there are some opinions out there that beg to differ with that statement based on sound engineering arguments - but 'practically speaking' the cartridge is just fine and has plenty of accuarcy potenetial to get the job done - iIF the user knows whats going on :-)
.308s are pretty forgiving when you shorten them up when COMPARED TO some of the hotter cartridges out there. 18" is still pretty short for a .308 if you want to get good long range performance. 20 or 22” would be my minimum length recommendation in this cartridge for LR purposes.
About 25” is ideal in my opinion (all things considered).
Time to come up with a target delivery drone...
Great shooting Dino! Amazing. Obviously you two did your homework. Rex that Descent into minor progression was really beautiful.
Depends on your exact mission criteria, particularly what you are shooting at. Paper targets? Deer? Bad guys in a Red Dawn situation? Also, what range do you anticipate to be shooting these targets?
Absolutely amazing video and shooting. What scope are you using?
I used the Ruger M77 in 243 for years it had a heavy barrel cut to 18" I bought it used. It was an amazing rifle I shot ever thing from 87gr to 60 gr all shot good I settled on 65 gr Hornady. I finely went to .204 for the economy of shooting. I shot 840 rounds a year through my .243 for years on end before selling it. Killed a lot of ground squirrels at long distances.
Ryan Albright .204 is so fast and devastating to flesh. Exit holes are awesome
Check this one...

Outlaws , I used sierra 85 grain blitz my Rem 243 & @ 200+ yds it makes 1 hole in yotes/wolves. HELL of a mess on the inside thou! Any closer ruins the pelt so i switch to FMJs. Goes clean through & if I dont hit a far rib makes a neat exit.
I have that exact same rifle in .308 and I absolutely love it!
i've never went past a 1000 yards with my .243 but now you all gonna make have to try now damn you LOL
I have a 243 with 1-10 twist. Is it better to go with a 87gr bullet that groups .5" @ 100 with a BC of 370 or a 100gr bullet that does 1" @ 100 and has a BC of 410? Is there an online tool to calculate this stuff to see how it would act in the winds? *Out beyond 400 yards
Hi Tibor. Just wondering about .243 twist rates... What grains can a 1in10 handle and also a 1in8.
I'm shooting a (basic no accu-trigger) Savage 11 in .243win, with a 1in9.25 twist and it shoots just a lil over .5moa with any factory loads from 58gr to 100gr.
Once it's barrel is finished I want to change it with a replacement bull barrel and I can only find 1in10 and 1in8 twists with out going with a custom barrel.
Good question: Its for the same reason every professional other sniper team in the world does it... getting used to and staying sharp with efficiently operating a rifle with all that stuff in the way does take some practice. :-)
I've been fallowing ur videos on the long range precision shooting think I'm on the 41t what part of the country is these ??? i live in Arkansas and the long shooting range here sucks because theres not where to shoot even 1000 yards
Impressive shooting with the little .243. I have one my self and I love it. Can you tell me what twist is the barrel on the Rugar. Thanks. Paul.
still trying to understand the reason for the Ghillie suit. Is the target going to shoot back or run away ?
what kind of knock down power would that 243 have at that distance
Great video, sure would like to try my 6.5x06 at that distance. Where are you two shooting at? Oh, and excellent team work on the shooting, spotting and calling.
Rex, you ever used varget in 243?
Im bout to try it with some 85 Sierra s
Way nice....great shooting for sure! Thanks for the video inspiration..
do you need a 20 moa rail for long range shooting?
I’ve had an M77 in .308 Win since the mid 70’s. Dang thing is incredibly accurate. But, never tried at anything that far out.. Great shooting!
I love my .243!!!!hats off!
What is the length and twist rate of this barrel? Im keen to build myself a 243 long range rifle
I believe he said this rifle was a 1/9. He also said that Hornady used a 1/10 when developing this bullet. To be safe if you building with a new barrel go 1/8 for best results, if you are going to use 115 grs go 1/7. I too am looking and have done an embarrassing amount of research. The best factory rifle will be a Savage 11 they have a 1/9.25 twist. if I don't get that I plan on getting and R700 rebarreling it with a 22" barrel with a 1/8 twist .
Does a 18" barrel be better for the 243 or a 7mm0-8?
Just ran across this video. Just built a 243 in 1-8 twist shooting a 107 grain. We always shoot 8x14 plate at 1000. Next shot at 1716. Have shot many 2" groups at 600. Even bucks wind pretty well. Look like we shoot in the same country. Have fun
Having a glance back in time Rex at this incredible shot. Quickload shows this shot possible at supersonic speed with the ideal load. I will have to dig it out sometime and share it.
I have an idea now with current Drone technology. How about we set up a drone that can hover equipped with 4k GoPro and video telemetry. Ya! Then provision it as well with some sort of paint spray gun to touch up your plates! Wow write this down, it's worth $20.... but you heard it here first.
Well done guy's! that is a long ass shot for a .243win!
What’s the best lethal range for a 243?
That is a long way to throw some lead with 243. What powder are you using? Nice vid!!
like the video, like the music, like your style. MORE REX RANGE VIDEOS!! Making the switch to the new hornady ELD? Or perhaps the new sierra 95 tmk? Lots a new bullets being released, would love to know your thoughts.
We are using 105 A-Maxs, they need a 1:9" to stabilize. Stability depends on a number of factors, including weight distribution, length, MV, air density, and a few other things, so there's no set weight to twist ratio that a guy can look at that is 100% honest. Consult the bullet manufacture’s recommended twist rates for the best answer :-)
Good shooting Rex. Thanks for sharing.
Just out of curiosity, what's your opinion on the .30-06 caliber? Like it, dislike it??
Most excellent and appreciated...
Greenhill Formula for most standard cartridges is T=150(d/r). With muzzle velocity of more than 2,800 fps, substitute 180 for 150. 90gr Nosler AccuBond, which has a diameter ratio of 4.407 (1.071 inches long divided by .243), looks like this T=180x(.243/4.407), which gives us a 1:9.9 twist rate. I got my bullet specs from Midwayusa. This was just an example, but playing around with the formula and different grains should give you more insight.
Love the 243, but I imagine splash and audible confirmation are almost nil at that distance. Good job on a tough shot.
I love this video. "I thought I was gonna die pretty much.oh my goodness"
I completely agree on the 30-06,very robust gun, along with a .308. I personally use a .243 Win, or 7mm Ultra Mag which is great for long distances. However my .243 is my favorite as far as hunting. Target practice is with the 30-06 or .308, and 7mm ultra Mag hands down! .
Incredible!
Question for yall if you dont mind me asking. Is this private land, public land or what? Im in south Georgia, so we dont have anywhere near this range near us, but I was just curious where yall actually shoot at. Thanks man!
Ok maybe you know this maybe not but the .308 cal holds the world record for tightest group at a 1000yd 2.8". I meant no disrespect to Rex this was the only video I did not get. I love his sniper one O one vids. Just so you know hit still hit the like button just like I did on all the rest. And I tell all my friends to check out his vids. And regards to my vids I'm using a rifle that is over 60years old and a outdated cartage plus I'm shoot'n in the most difficult conditions the Mountain, Rain and Wind. 20+ mph winds one of the difficult part but the rain was harder. So l would like to see you guys hit a 3" bullseye in the rain on your first shot at 1320yd with any cal
I've been looking into getting a 223 bolt gun but I'm now thinking the old 243 will be more versital with manageable recoil. Like the idea of smoking 80gn bullets.
What altitude are you shooting? Great vid.
Crazy shot!
do you use magnum or reg large rifle primers
reg large rifle CCIs
awesome shooting. I frakkin subscribed
If you use a .45-70 you'll be able to hear it next time. Of course you'll have to raise the barrel up to about a 45 degree angle to that of the .243 and wait until lunch is over for it to get there but what the heck.
awesome, quick insight into sniper life for civilians.
good for you guys. I wish we have area that can shoot out that far
This just proves my point even more, that almost every firearm is 1000yds capable. What, how is it you have Marsh, Green foliage, wicked sunset, and small mountainous hills where you shoot. the best i can do is forest, or more forest. Good videos :)
The 7mm-08 may be a little less fussy with shorter barrels than the .243 WIn.
Did any one else notice the second shot vier wayyyyy off to the left at 3.29min on the video u see a vapor trail and a bright object going to the left. U have to look close.
Badlands, USA :-)
This is fantastic
I realize this is an old video, but setting up a wireless video camera near the target is very easy and inexpensive. Takes the guess work out.
It's that the SWFA SS scope atop that rifle?
Don't lie, the target didn't catch you, that super sweet mullet did.
I have never wanted a .243 until watching your videos. I guess I need to buy another gun! Any recommendations for ghillie suits or other concealment?
Freakin impresive
Your Teriyaki was obviously much better than my curry lol. By the way , your 101 videos combined with Gunwerks Gseven ballistic Calc = a very satisfying day at 700 yds at the range yesterday. My old Omark 44 in 260 Rem produced 1/2 moa. Very happy. Have a good one mate.
Ok I've heard a lot about the .243 vs the .308. Which one is better for long range shooting. please expound
Definitely depends on velocity of wind.
Awesome dude if your not a military sniper you should be if you are thank you for your service I hope I can make sniper school
Wait no Footage of Rex sliding backwards down hill ? lol Awesome shooting .
Hi Matt, thanks for the video and music I thoroughly enjoyed it as I do all your instructional videos. May I please ask what barrel twist rate that .243 has? I recently purchased a Tikka T3 .243 with a 1-10 twist and was wondering if I could expect this kind of performance out of it with practice and load tuning.
If I remember correctly this factory Ruger VT has a 1:9". A 1:10" may not quite stabilize the 105s, so it would be somewhat difficult to reach this far with lighter bullets.
This is my old SWFA SS10X which was made before they offered ELV turrets with MRAD adjustments. The new MRAD version is better in my opinion. :-)
oh ya, my problem is that i get set up and my target is blocked by stuff, ie hills, foliage etc. i live in arizona and this should be easy, right? But no! Plesase give me a pearl of wisdom. Thank you for any ideas about this.
+bangsdagong I know it's a bit late, but from what I can see in a few of his videos is that he is atop a hill, and his target is on the slope of another hill, with a "valley" in between them. This seems to eliminate the things in between that may block line of sight, hope this helps :)
Crazy
So a .308 bullet would behave ok on a 18" barrel?
Billy Dixon's famous shot with a Sharps rifle at the Second Battle of Adobe Walls was measured at 1,538 yards, or nine-tenths of a mile.
Hey Rex I have been following your channel for a few years now and u previously helped me out with a build a few years ago and I'm coming to you for advise again I noticed you did another build with a Remington 700 in 243 I really hope you can get back to me as soon as you can but I'm looking into building a new rifle also in 243 but I am having second thoughts on it because I have read a lot of reviews on this round people are saying it wears down the barrel life rather fast I just need some further information on this cause I know u have had the rifle in this video for many years the other round I was considering was the 6.5 creed more so if you can which one would u recommend and is there any truth behind the 243 and barrel life the complaint is more commonly for guys who are not using bolt action rifles.
+alli savana ferris : ^^^...the longest sentence, evah...^^^
Yeah, the remaining velocity was about 990fps and energy would only have been like 225 ft/lbs.
Have you ever experienced a cartridge that your 243 seemed to hate? I have a Rem 700 VLS that shoots pretty well. Once I tried to sight it in with 100gr Winchester Ballistic Silver tips. After 2 boxes I had not shot a group tight enough to even call a group let alone make a scope adjustment for. This was at only 50 yards. It was everywhere on a 12" target. I put in a couple of the rounds I had already been hunting with and laid them almost on top of each other so I know my scope was not a prob.
Nice
SOooooo Awesome!!!!
That is fucking awesome. Is the projectile even stable at that distance or does it tumble?
What part of the country are you shooting in?
Thanks, I was curious since we rarely get more than 100 yard shots where I live. I recently went through Nebraska and they have a lot of open land as well. I've heard SD is a beautiful State.
Are you shooting the 105 A max
Alejandro Bermudez You bet, a great bullet indeed.
TiborasaurusRex
Alejandro Bermudez ... READ the intro ... Load: 105 gr Hornady A-Max w/ 43.1 gr RL-19, CCI Primers
Impressive, some people would consider that almost impossible even with a .30 cal rifle. Not really certain about the plat impacts but after seen your previous videos I'am ready to believe you xD. you know your shits man
This is insane shooting! Just sick! And you guys sound like military or ex-military. Yes? Great video!
I would have said your outstanding from the other vids, this was FRIGGEN NUTS. Keep it up my friend.
wow what spotting scope are you using let along scope to see out that far? For real are you using some space telescope like some 40x150mm tasco --I have never found any spotting scope that really sees past 1000 yard with precision and super detail ?
Try a Swarovski ATX wih the 95mm objective. I sell them and I looked at a house on a mountain about 10km away and I could tell you what kind of car was in the driveway. Pretty amazing stuff.
chickensodelicious Bet it's pricey, way over a 1000 dollars?
John Russell All together you're looking at around $5000. $6000 if you buy a swarovski tripod to go with it.
chickensodelicious I'm way too ghetto for that one have to stick to cheap man's scope for about 450 dollars? Just plain Leupold for me?
John Russell Spend a little bit more and get a Vortex Diamondback. They're around $500 and the warranty is unmatched as far as the optics industry goes. Plus it's got really good glass for the money.
No problem. I actually enjoyed the MREs. Chicken teriyaki was favorite. lol
Dude I suspected hits could be possible @1200 at 1400 I figured that amax would be flying like a wounded duck, really cool.
you are the man.
