Back around 2010 I was so hyped for more female lead action films, especially a Black Widow movie.. Fast forward 14 years and I actively avoid any action films promoting a female lead. I'm exhausted of the girl boss trope and I don't trust any of them all thanks to how badly they were handled by the ideologues.

I am a lover of women and also them being sexy. I too love movies like Ghost in the Shell and Black Widow just to simply enjoy watching Scarlett Johansson. I see your point about them pushing it with Ghostbusters 2016, Oceans 14 the woman one, and just movie after movie featuring these strong women leads. But still here in 2024 we get Furiosa with ATJ and Damsel with Millie Bobbie Brown and I sat there fully immersed with both movies. They just gotta do it right and Im all in with women leads. Give me movies like Lucy and Anna and Morgan and Prey anytime. My 2 cents.

Decades ago Alien and Terminator had shown that its not only possible, but can be actually great and that there is a huge audience there for it. But those obnoxious girlbosses that can't stand on their own but always have to put down guys got really old, really fast. These days I actively avoid all movies that only have a hint of that because it just ruins everything...

I still imagine a Black Widow movie that showed Bucharest being a Xenophon like (ie Warriors) story where Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Mockingbird among others fight their way out of the city while being pursued by an awesome Red Guardian (not that crap character that ended up after the spectacular opening scene with him in the actual Black Widow movie). That movie occurring right before Endgame. It would further emphasize the sacrifice of Black Widow in Endgame which should have been done differently with Hawkeye actually pushing Black Widow over the edge after the two concluding he needs to live because of his family - the whole fight to commit suicide was ridiculous and took away from the dramatic moment). Such a missed opportunity to give us a female Taskmasters head on a male stuntman's body.

Personal story. Went to see Fury Road because I was excited to see a new Mad Max movie. I was disappointed, which is why I didn't go to see Furiosa, having learned my lesson from Fury Road. Perhaps Hollywood should start taking exit interviews so they don't get the false impression that something is successful because lots of people went to see it, based on false promises and false premises.

Guys, i love you, but don't go all monocausal on why movies fail: it's not always 'waaamaaan' or sloppy storytelling, sometimes a good film can fail because it does not have mass appeal. successful movies have a distinct plot that is easy to follow and summarize and offers exciting set pieces, that are well-made - it is, in other words, easy to market through word-of-mouth. FURIOSA did not have that, it's a film for film buffs first and not enough of an audience pleaser. It's plot meanders, in too episodic 'chapters', it has less action than the predecessor and feels overall more disjointed. The overall quality of all that is still high, but it's just very difficult to tell other people what's so great about it. If all that wasn't the case, the lack of Max would never have bothered any of the audience, I'm 100% sure.

I loved Furiosa, but I think it would’ve been a better choice to make it a series, since certain characters and plot threads definitely needed more time to breathe. This film is clearly setting up “the Wasteland” which is a prequel about Max, that was partially adapted into the 2015 video game, which with a few tweaks has potential to be a quintessential Mad Max story. It would’ve been crazy to have that release alongside a mainline Max film, or just make it one big series, I feel like people would totally be more inclined to check it out that way, going for a Game of Thrones approach would’ve been my choice.

That too. The Jeffersons was a spin-off from All in the Family. A Man Called Hawk was a spin-off of Spencer: for Hire. They each did well, and for the people who never knew they were spin-offs it didn't matter. Mad Max fans would have recognized the name Furiosa and knew it was set in that universe. Doing that doesn't make your female lead look good, it makes them look terrible. Barbie is probably the one brand that hadn't been ruined by that yet. And they didn't push it in any of the promotional material until people saw it and found out. Plus it was a cool "CHALLENGE" to see Oppenheimer and Barbie. Which helped Nolan's film. It is a moronic breakdown of modern society. Those who "love it" are fully on board for the descent. The minds behind this movie are perverts and degenerates who see society as a game of payback for all the people who hurt them when they were young, the message of the individual being the absolutely most important person in existence, at the cost of any type of functioning society. Maybe you haven't noticed yet, but take a look outside your window...America is burning to the ground, films like this are fuel on the flames.

I've discussed with others why Furiosa didn't work. To me, as many others have also agreed with me on this, Furiosa wasn't that interesting of a character to warrant a prequel story with her. She was okay as a one-off character for Fury Road, much like many of the other one-off characters that have turned up in past Mad Max films. Furiosa was only as interesting as the one-off character she was in Fury Road. No one wanted a prequel about that character (Hell, there was a set of prequel stories involving the characters from this film, including one about Max, but no one bought them). Furiosa didn't need a prequel any more than any other one-off character that has been seen in the films. That's why I wasn't interested in seeing it, regardless how well reviewed it is.

    • @JRRob3wn
      @JRRob3wn 2 місяці тому +3

Yeah, it’s not rocket science. Most people like Mad Max movies because they like the character of Max. People go to a Batman movie to see Batman, not some other character from your last Batman movie. Same goes with any franchise. You could make the most badass spy movie ever, set in the Bond universe, have it star the last Bond girl and I am NOT interested. The logic behind this film is just mind boggling. I really feel like once Mel got in trouble, Miller just wanted to ditch the character entirely as an FU to him.

  • @Guigley
    @Guigley 2 місяці тому +5

It's not hard to see why _Furiosa_ failed. Here are the reasons:
It was made almost 10 years after _Fury Road._
No one cares about the character Furiosa. She is a side character in Max's story, not the other way around. The film used the subtitle "A _Mad Max_ Saga" name because it could not have succeeded without a connection to a famous franchise. Even with the connection, it was a bomb. Audiences saw right through that one.
People are sick and tired of female-led action films, especially women. They largely don't succeed at the box office, yet studios still make them for the purpose of social engineering and devotion to ideology.
People wanted a sequel to _Fury Road_ with Max as the lead. Making a _Mad Max_ film without Mad Max was the worst decision George Miller could have possibly made.

I didn't see Furiosa because it's a prequel - we know she'll show up in the future in Fury Road, so there's no stakes for her. We know she'll survive everything thrown at her which takes all the tension away. I didn't care to see too deeply into her backstory, we saw just enough in Fury Road to make her compelling. I didn't want to see 40 minutes of her as a child. Another reason I didn't see it is because the actress's eyes are abnormally far apart, and I find it a little unnerving.

There were never any spin-off characters who warranted their own stories being told as standalones. cheers!

Furiosa is clearly setting up a prequel about Max called The Wasteland, the script of which was loosely adapted into the 2015 video game, it deals with the aftermath of Furiosa’s events, and Scabrous Scrotus becomes the main antagonist. It adds so much context to Fury Road, if it ever gets made it’ll most certainly be a success. If you want to know more about the plot just play the game, or watch some videos about it, it’s semi-canonical however. And if George Miller wants to step down, it would be insane if Mel Gibson came back to direct.

Shame it didn't do well. It was probably one of the better movies this summer. It's not hard to guess why it flopped, though. 1. It's "A Mad Max Saga" without Mad Max. Strike one. 2. The marketing framed it as a girlboss film. Strike two. 3. It was about a secondary character that nobody but people in the media and their shills on social media were super hyped for in the first place, and it wasn't even played by the same actor who introduced the character. Strikes three and four. Furiosa wasn't a bad character, but nothing about Fury Road demanded any answers about her backstory. The movie actually wasn't a girlboss story, and Furiosa ended up an interesting and endearing character. The story ajd worldbuilding were interesting and the action was great. It didn't deserve its fate, but that's what happens when you have bad marketing. This would have been much better served either as a Max miniseries or as a film that didn't present itself as "the future of the franchise," rather as an optional side adventure for those who want more from the world of Mad Max. Honestly, I only cared to see it because a friend wanted to. I'm glad I dod because it was way better than I expected, but I wouldn't have seen it for all of the reasons preciously listed. Most Mad Max fans couldn't ignore the absence of Max, and I can appreciate that, but I still wish they'd given it a chance. After all, Max was exactly the lead in _Fury Road,_ he sort of shared that with the adult Furiosa, and it still delivered more of the over-the-top chases and crashes and stunts that we all love and see a Max movie for. And this Furiosa was *not* a "girl boss," so if the fans were believing that, they were mistaken, but they just didn't want to test their assumptions. Sad. But there are a whole myriad of reasons for this not succeeding, and the studio will just have to live with it and we will too, because...since _Fury Road_ and _Furiosa_ did so poorly we might not have any more Mad Max films.

A lot of George's work is amazing, and FuryRoad is astounding,
but FuryRoad(2014) was the herald that bought in this new girl-boss era. That was even before StarWars started going girl-boss in 2015. Ten years later and we've seen soooooooo many franchises go this way... especially those of us who play computer-games as well as watch movies. It's a plague. And so often these girl-boss characters are written with spite, and involve degrading the old male characters. People are sick of it.
I heard George pitched 3 completely different stories/scripts for a potential next MadMax movie, and the executives who make decisions chose the only one that didn't have Max, and did have a girl-boss. It's not George's fault this failed. It's 100% the executive's fault. George's name isn't enough to make me assume that sleazy executives aren't shoving their nasty anti-male messaging into a franchise.

    Reasons I think Furiosa failed.
    1. No Mad Max
    2. It came out when feminist, girl bosses and Mary Sues films are hated so much that people didn't want to watch it.
    3. They announced Furiosa movie years ago after Fury Road but took too long to process and that killed the anticipations.
    4. Fury Road while a hit with fans and critics, didn't make enough at the box office. Same thing with Furiosa.

Not only is it a side character but it’s not even Charlize Theron but a totally different actress. It makes the whole thing feel completely detached. I think people would have preferred Theron. You actually felt like she could do the action in Fury Road, unlike the waif-like child in this one who you never believe is doing these things.
And god, 40 MINUTES of her as as a kid! And of course her mom is just as much a badass as Max or her. It’s like everyone is a super fighter now. Furiosa and Max aren’t special if everyone fights like a superhero.

I agree that Anya Taylor-Joy is a better Furiosa, but I think everyone, men and women, is tired of action movies that don't star men, especially those that try and show women being superior in every way and men are evil morons. It's like all the men in Hollywood just handed their balls over to the women just to shut them up. If we had been making good movies for the past decade, not just superhero or action movies, but all kinds of movies with all kinds of budgets, then I think more people would accept this film. • @Ahmenthi

Furiosa had a lot of things going against it: Mad Max isn't a super popular property to begin with, this movie was a prequel about a side character, it came out in a time where female protagonists are overdone and done poorly, and it came out way too late after Fury Road. If it came out a year or two after Fury Road it would have likely done better or at least wouldn't be fighting such an uphill battle.
But I believe its lateness can be chalked up to a lawsuit between Miller and the studio, right? I knew that the director wanted to do more with Furiosa after Fury Road but something got in the way, and whatever it was ultimately sabotaged this movie, intentionally or not.
It did not fail on its merits, it failed because of the circumstances around it.

It will heavily involve the aftermath of the Wasteland Wars, seeing Scabrous Scrotus take over Gastown- and establishing a blood feud with Max, it’s a long story but its quintessential Mad Max, there’s a Thunderdome, the Interceptor, etc. If that ever gets made into live action it’ll most certainly be a success.

    Love 2, really like 1 and 3, agree 4 was okay/visually amazing.
So, I really Like ATJ, I think she can likely carry a film. The first issue obviously, is hardly anyone wants a Mad Max movie with no Max.
There are a thousand stories in the wastelands, we need a common thread to care. Without it, Waterworld a Mad Max saga for all anyone knows.
That aside, anyone who did want a Furiosa movie, wanted Charlize T. So thats another point off.
Lastly, a good female led movie with no mass appeal has no chance of sticking out nowadays, 15+ years ago it was the same for male led, it's how some flops become classics after alk.
To add a slight tangent, they keep compounding the issue for the next one as well, ones if there are more. A mistake a lot of other franchises have to make, Mad Max doesn't, or didn't. The line between (beyond?) Thunderdome and Fury Road was murky, this FR prequel solidifies that line in so many ways. Even as a fan, I now have no need to watch anything set after this film, even if there are rave (trusted) reviews it's not my Max.
Just like it's not my Luke, Kirk, Batman etc.

@@Sam_T2000 Tbh I disagree with your view of Max. In the second and even the third he was a decent and integral character (rewatch them!). But Fury Road was just laughably bad in that regard. It pretty much wouldn't have mattered if he wasn't there at all. And as for the story, well I get what you mean, But if you don't care about the story at all you can just as well read the yellow pages or watch a compilation of explosions. There has to be something and it should be coherent and make sense in some regard otherwise I think it's just a waste of time.

A lot of plot but no story, atrocious dialogue, most of the CGI looks unfinished, sets and costumes from a streaming show, too long.
    It should have failed harder.

Im not into Anya Taylor Joy anymore. I hate what she's done to herself in terms of plasstic surgery. And she has some kind of weird idea about "female rage" that she admits she inserts into every role she places.

I thought Borderlands was OK but lacked sarcastic humor and Handsome Jack. Atlas is also a defunct company in the Borderlands universe so that felt weird. It would have been better as a series. I loved the first tales from the borderlands and always add Claptrap to my team to go after the boss but hated the sequel. Deadpool and wolverine was excellent but destroying the TVA would have been a more satisfying ending.

Yes, it doesn't have Max, but furiosa was still a fun time, and people slept on it

Mary Sue = poison. I just say no to female led modern movies. Cliched crap.

Then why did the latest Dead Reckoning flop? I enjoyed it, but it didn't do well. Male and pale is?

i watched Furiosa, here is why it was a bad movie in my opinion:
    1. the Prelude was too long, who cared for the "mother"?! also, made Furiosa look stupid as a kid which didn't fit a postapocalyptic world.
    2. it was drawn out. all sections need to be cut down. too many chapters as well.
    3. the love story wasn't a love story, there was no chemistry. so...no payoff, no feeling of loss. why dwell on it then?
    4. the action that made the previous movie ok was missing in this one. not much happened, the stunts were okish, but the set pieces were on the smaller side, no comparison.
    5. the ending was lacking. it started out good, then she shot him....and then it went fantasy for no benefit whatsoever.
first i thought she would let him die in the desert just watching 10m away for days, which would have been badass. but no, we need conversation and woke symbolism.
    6. some hints at gender hating stuff but i guess thats hollywood these days. you roll your eyes a few times.
honestly, modern movies need to hire good editors who cut that stuff down.

Mary Jabassa & Praetorian Jack needed more screen time, that’s why I think a series would’ve worked better, like Game of Thrones when it was good.

Why? It was a bad girl boss movie. And stick figure was awful at playing a man.

Charlize Theron is a very lazy actor. She almost singlehandedly wrecked the movie version of The Road because she refused to play a weak character.
