This should be a “thing” at public libraries. There’s usually a community room at the library, and it could be designated a reading party at certain scheduled times. I LOVE this idea! Bookstores could host the parties, too. ❤
Indeeeed! Also, I was thinking it was the communist/anarchist/anticapitalist in me saying it's outrageous to get people to pay 20 dollars when it's something you can do in a public library, but maybe it's just that it isn't cool if it's at a library, and for free (or the people attending the public library aren't the "right" people, with the same agenda?). Sorry, I'm European, I just don't get it.
So basically, it's SSR (silent sustained reading) or DEAR (drop everything and read) for adults. My husband and I actually schedule this from time to time. We have certain days where after the kids go to bed, we just sit next to each other on the couch and read.
I’m the only reader in my household. I have extended family that are as voracious readers as I am. And of course I have a favorite relative. He too is a reader. Christmas Eve this past year we were talking and someone asked him something so I pulled out my book and just started reading. I got to the end of a chapter and closed the book and he immediately started talking to me again. At that moment I realized, he hadn’t said another word after he answered the other family member because he wouldn’t interrupt my reading. If he wasn’t already my favorite family member, that would have done it.
Silent Book Club has local chapters across the US and is a similar concept. I've been thinking about starting a book club where we don't all read the same thing but rather gather and talk about we are reading/have read recently. This book party thing is a very fun mix of the two.
We need to start these reading events for children with age-appropriate reading and discussions- shouldn't be too hard if they are bringing their own book!
I have never been to a reading party. I am not a person who can listen to music while I’m reading because I find it distracting. Usually I’m at home when I am reading. I really like to read in bed or outside when the weather is nice.
I love reading to music BUT it has to be instrumental only, somewhat chill, and match the vibe of the book. UA-cam has been great to find music for this. The right music can really enhance the experience. Music with lyrics/vocals are very distracting though- my brain latches to the lyrics rather than what I’m reading.
love this idea. yet would you please lower the music behind the voices. isn't it called background music for a reason. it's hard to focus on the words for us neurodivergents. Thank you
Just find a book club and I’m an avid reader how is this social if you’re all reading different books I think the book club would be more social because you’d be reading the same book and then you can discuss it discussing the book that you’re reading is the social part of the book club this because everybody’s reading a different book is not social it makes no sense
Why so judgy? If it makes people happy and it isn't harming anyone then why is it stupid? Just because you are not interested in it doesn't mean others aren't, evidenced by the fact they are selling out tickets. Additionally book clubs are different, because they often require you to be reading specific books to discuss in the club, and often you aren't there to read with people, you are only there to discuss. This serves a very different purpose.
I believe you missed the point. It’s just about reading together. I find traditional book clubs very constraining. There’s always one pushy person that chooses the book they want to read and then homework and mandatory discussions ad nauseum. I love this collective and non-judgemental concept where you’re free to read what you want and talk about it if you so choose. No pressure, just fun. Clearly, it’s very popular!
I think that the fact that you bring your own book opens up more diverse conversation and is a good way to be exposed to books that you might not stumble across or that are out of your usual genre.
This is like the silent book club in the Big Peach,,,ah nope. How about read the book then DISCUSS IT?? But do like the fact get to talk to real humans.

oooo that'd be an awesome idea!!!
I'd love to see this at my local library

Finally a party an introvert can enjoy.
Yep 😊
Right!!

This is incredible! Plus I feel that avid readers just have far more interesting conversations. Hope this keeps building and becoming a thing.

I love this! It’s like a way to find connections with others. We need more connections in today’s world!
I went to one of these at my local bookstore and it was the best thing ever!!
Great idea. If they are going to ban books at certain places. Buy them and read them together at homes
Exactly.
I want to go to that party
I read every single day, multiple times a day.. I love the peace and quiet but this sounds fun.
There are so many cool things that happen in NYC.
I hope they have chapters in other cities, this is a cool idea 👍🏾
I really like this! I will try this with my school reading club! YAY!

We always called this a read-in (analogous to a write-in). Heh. Never thought to make it a ticketed event.
I actually so want something like this
This is my idea of a super fun party
I am so for this! ☝🏾
I need this !!
Somehow studio lights and cozy don't seem to mesh well for me.
Books are WINDERFUL
Perhaps read more of them to help you spell words correctly.
Love this
I love this❤
Been an avid reader since I was a kid, no way I would ever go to a book party. I’m highly critical of books anyway and I enjoy them solely on my own.
Fair🤷
🎵❤️✨📚helps encourage others🤗
I need this.
omg this is my dream come true - come to Canada please!!
Just throw your own😀
This is sooo cool!!!
we used to have this party before when I was young, in a place called library😂
Nowadays, libraries can be bustling, unquiet places.
This is cool!
This should be free.
I wonder if the club gradually splits into factions of people who crack the book spine and people who don't
There are probably rules about not talking once the reading begins.
I love my reading rhythms at the Library.. I also do reading with friends with Mocha Girls on Meet up. This is not new..
It is for me.

I'm not neuro divergent and I also find it annoying
nice.
🙂✨
❤❤😊😊
Umm libraries?
Libraries can be somewhat noisy nowadays.
I would work for this company if they brought it to my state
It's not a company.
book party ? you mean a "library"?
Another example of the reinvention of the wheel.
No, this is different. At one of these "book parties," no one talks while they're reading. Nowadays, libraries can actually be somewhat noisy.
Yuck. No, thank you. This gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I’d rather talk about what I’m reading with others. I’d fall asleep on those comfy cushions
This is like the silent book club in the Big Peach,,,ah nope. How about read the book then DISCUSS IT?? But do like the fact get to talk to real humans.
Eh, not everyone wants to read the same book. I like this idea cuz you can read whatever you want and not have to chat if you don't want to
Book club. Duh.

A book club is when you all get together to talk about the book. This is a bunch of people reading silently together, but all different books.
