You will be amazed at what you will find on them!!! I cut mine so I have an 1" to 1 1/2" of fabric. Don't cut less than 3/4" of color. It makes the selvages hard to use!
I have made spool blocks with selvages also! I used them in a cute wall hanging/table runner! I like your idea of using that as a label! Thanks for sharing!
Stumbled over this “pincushion” video👏! Enjoy making pincushions and I have box of selvages that I’ve never used🫢. You mentioned a series you did last year, mug rugs. Making a ☕️, and will look for those videos. I’m 79 and enjoy sewing, quilting and 💚 anything 24” or smaller that I can finish in reasonable amount of time.😉! 🍀
Welcome!! You should enjoy this series then! As well as my Monthly Magic Sew-a-long series from last year! This was a series and I showed how to make a different mug rug each month! Quick, easy, and fun projects! It is definitely less than 24"
Great project - I always keep my salvages because so many of them have great words and fun pictures. These will be fun to make. I do like the diagonal one the best. I also may make some more mug rugs for my sewing room with this method.
Hi Michelle! Thanks for this video. I make these often and they are popular. Another thing I do with selvages is to sew them onto a larger piece of muslin on the diagonal, then cut two pieces in a Christmas ornament shape like a simple bauble, then sew together, stuff and add a hanging loop. Other quilters love me for asking for their cast off selvages and other scraps! Hugs from Canada.
I was in the middle of a project making pincushions and my local quilt shop was out of the crushed walnuts. I didn’t have time to order any and ended up going to Petsmart. They sell semi-large bags of crushed walnuts for hamster cages. It’s a fraction of the cost. You do end up with way more than you probably need, but I saved it and have used it in a variety projects and have actually used it up!
Hi Michelle, Like you I have a plastic container full of Selvages & I do like the diagonal & would likely love herringbone too if a bit bigger. I thought of a machine needle keeper too b/c the theme is sewing. Very, very cute. Love them.
The selvedge project is very cute. I will only sew one side down on a few so that I can also use my little clips on it. Looking forward to this!!! Thank you
Selvages are so much fun to use! It is so amazing what some fabric companies put on their selvages....cowboy boots, flowers, fire hydrants, cowboy hats, Christmas trees, hearts, shapes, etc!
Great demo and info Michelle! I first saw a selvage quilt on Pat Sloans YT Chanel. I immediately fell in love with it and have been saving my selvages since then. This particular quilt finished in a diamond pattern and was a quilt as you go! So pretty! A tip for cutting selvages is to trim them off with a minimum of 1/4 inch of the fabric. I may have to do a few of your pincushions to begin. Thanks so much💕🧵
II usually leave 1 to 1 1/2" of fabric. I frequently trim them down but at least I have enough fabric to sew the selvages. I have made several small projects and I really enjoy using them because they are just fun!
How fun! I have some saved selvedges but had not used them for anything yet. I may be cutting my selvedges too close to be really usable, but I will try this. I really loved monthly magic and I will keep working toward getting all of mine done
Thank you! I love the small project series idea. It's how I got my foot in the door with sewing. I have made pin cushions similar to this, but with mini quilt patterns. I taught myself quilting skills this way so I wouldn't waste a lot of material or feel bad if I had to bin something. For pin cushions, I usually take a scrap piece of fabric and cover the ground shells with that piece before stitching the opening shut--helpful for odd shapes and rounded openings--so as not to spill shells all over if the project tips over. The glue idea serves the same purpose. This would be just as fun using vintage jacquard ribbons. I have a collection of those and need ideas to use them up! Thanks again!
I think small projects is a great idea! Cute pin cushion . I don't save salvages, I have enough scraps - even tho I plan my projects carefully so I minimize them. 😂
Excellent tutorial, thanks Michelle. Waving to you from Michigan. Sometimes I hand stitch the information aka the salvage to the back of a completed quilt saying the mfg and name of the collection; because someone will always ask what the fabric is.
I saw a video the other day. They had said you can get crushed walnut shells at Pet Stores. They said it is cheaper. I have not personally checked this out. But thought I would share. If it is the same thing. And a savings. Wow. Go for it.
Love the pin cusions. I bought something similar, but it has stuffing in it and very little shells. I have to be careful, if I put a pin in too far, it pokes out the bottom, and I prick myself. I want to make a few of these, so this popped up just in time. Can't wait to see some more small projects.
I think this series will be lots of fun. I love the diagonal layout too. Now I know what to do with selvages.. I read somewhere that you can purchase ground nut shells at a pet store for a lower price. I believe it is sold for reptile bedding/litter. I always thought because of the tighter weave in the selvage that you didn’t want it in your quilts. Will it be a problem for pins?
I do not think it will be a problem for the pins. I have used selvages for small projects I do not intend to wash. I have not used them for quilts that would be used for covering up with and will need to be washed. You can purchase ground nut shells at pet stores and it is cheaper.
Great little project Michelle. I made my only quilting friend a tote bag from selvages and really enjoyed it. I also LOVE selvages. I seem to have lost my sewing mojo lately and this might be the project that gets me back in my sewing room. Thanks, and I look forward to lots more small projects.
Oh no! Lost sewing mojo!! Stay tuned and I hope it comes back!! Sometimes little projects help!!! Thanks for sharing and please keep me posted on you sewing mojo status!
Oh - this is such a darling idea! I always lament over what to do with the adorable selvages - now I have a project for them. Thank you so much! I really love your channel. Kathy
I made a pincushion! I rarely finish projects so quickly, but I had the English walnut shells waiting so I was able to finish. I was glad for your tip about leaving 1-2 inches of the fabric. I was working on a bluebonnet project so I made a bluebonnet fabric selvage quilt. Any way to show a picture?
Very cute. Did you sew the selvages in place? I thought I saw just glue. What width do you cut your selvages? Looking forward to your small projects this year.
Yes, I did sew mine and I talked about that in the video. The glue is only to temporarily baste them in place until they are sewed. I cut my selvages with 1 to 1 1/2" of fabric. I don't cut less than 3/4" of fabric above the selvage.
So cute. Are you going to create a pattern for some of your future projects? I'd love to have a pattern for your mug rugs. Thanks for another great video.
Sew cute. Looking forward to this years series. I’ve never been into saving selvages. I love the things that I see people make. Guess it boils down to finding space for one more scrap bin 😂 😂😂😂. Where did you get your thumb thimble?
The product on my thumb is called a needle puller. It is made of silicone and helps me grab the needle with less force needed. Here is an Amazon Affiliate link: amzn.to/4201dfn You might be able to get them at Wal-Mart also.

I am drawn to the diagonal. I think I like it a tiny bit better. Thank you for sharing.
Me too! Thanks for sharing.
Nice series! Looking forward to the next one and those that follow😊
Awesome, thank you!
What a cute idea think I will start saving selvages.

@@thesimplequilter7499 thanks
Love the small projects. I'm making pin cushions now to go in 2024 Christmas stockings. I will be sure to include some of yours.
I think these will be great gift giving projects for Christmas!
Love the small project idea series. The pincushions are adorable.
Thank you!
Looks like fun. We will be ready for next Christmas, before we know it. Thank you.
You are most welcome!
Your mug rugs are adorable!!
Thank you!
Love this. I make quilt label blocks in the shape of a spool and the thread is strips of selvages. I write the quilt info on the spool part.
I have made spool blocks with selvages also! I used them in a cute wall hanging/table runner! I like your idea of using that as a label! Thanks for sharing!

They are so cute Michelle! Thanks for the new series 🐛🐛🐛🐛
You are most welcome Fern! You need to make one in red, white, and blue! I think you will really like it!
Love this project! Thanks for sharing!
You are most welcome!
That is so cute.. I love the project idea but I will miss the mug rugs 😂
Lol! I felt I needed to change it up a bit. Enjoy!
I will have to start saving my selvages! Super cute idea, will look forward to next session. I love scrappy anything!

I’ve just started collecting selvages!! I think this is a perfect first selvage project! Thank you!!!

Way back when, pincushions were a starter project in home economics. We stuffed them with used nylon stockings, I'm old lol.
Lol!
I’ve been collecting selvages for a while. I’m looking forward to making something with them.
Enjoy!
Saving mine for my bookshelf quilt. But love this idea as well
Enjoy!

I think small projects is a great idea! Cute pin cushion . I don't save salvages, I have enough scraps - even tho I plan my projects carefully so I minimize them. 😂
That is a great strategy!!! I understand having enough scraps and enough and too much of quilting "stuff"!!!
Great idea!, I lie this
Glad you like it!
I love this idea of small projects ! I already used your tutorial to make my pincushion ❤
Wonderful! They are fun, quick and easy! Thanks for sharing!
I absolutely love this!! Please do more.
I will be doing one project a month!
Excellent tutorial, thanks Michelle. Waving to you from Michigan. Sometimes I hand stitch the information aka the salvage to the back of a completed quilt saying the mfg and name of the collection; because someone will always ask what the fabric is.
Great idea!!!! I never thought of that!!!
I am not a selvedge girl…I have a friend who is though. Looking forward to the monthly projects
Thanks for sharing!
I also save my selvedges for a friend. But I really like this small project idea!

Great idea! Quick projects are a good break from working on a quilt. I was wondering how to piece together selvages to make a mug rug.
I have done the same thing just with a larger foundation piece. Then I put a binding around it.
So cute! I really like the diagonal one😊
Yes, it really provides more interest I think.
Great little project Michelle. I made my only quilting friend a tote bag from selvages and really enjoyed it. I also LOVE selvages. I seem to have lost my sewing mojo lately and this might be the project that gets me back in my sewing room. Thanks, and I look forward to lots more small projects.

I give my salvage to a friend
I bet that makes your friend happy!!!
Oh - this is such a darling idea! I always lament over what to do with the adorable selvages - now I have a project for them. Thank you so much! I really love your channel. Kathy
Kathy, I am so glad you are enjoying my channel! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
I have been keeping my selvages aside as they were too good to throw away. A needle book and matching pin cushion would be nice.
Great idea!
I would love to see how to make a large, round pin cushion out of Tula pink fabric. They sell them at Disneyland.
Hmmm...I have not seen those....
I made a pincushion! I rarely finish projects so quickly, but I had the English walnut shells waiting so I was able to finish. I was glad for your tip about leaving 1-2 inches of the fabric. I would like to and I have explored that some. Time is just such a factor for me....of course it is for everyone...
Sew cute. Looking forward to this years series. I’ve never been into saving selvages. I love the things that I see people make. Guess it boils down to finding space for one more scrap bin 😂 😂😂😂. Where did you get your thumb thimble?

You might be able to get them at Wal-Mart also.
@@thesimplequilter7499 thank you 😊
See cute! My MIL will love this. She was just saying she wanted to make a selvage project.
What is the quilt behind you? Love that pattern. ❤
It is called "Olive" by Lella Boutique
Cute idea, Michelle! You could easily do other shapes, too.
What’s on your fingers when you handstitched it closed?

Thank you; its charming!
You don’t explain sewing the strips on the diagonal pin cushion ?
I did not demonstrate it but I said how I sewed each strip along the edge. You just sew each strip as close to the edge as you can.
What else can you fill them with???
Some quilters use sand, cotton or wool filling, Polyfil....
🎉❤
Thanks!
