Here's the 100 Subscriber special! I do apologise if this video isn't up to standard or is the best quality, as this is the first time I have ever made a fully edited review video with voiceovers and such. Please do feel free to give me feedback and responses in the comments!
For the cost, the meals were pretty poor quality! Add to that how dirty you say the cabin was, it sounds definitely not worth it. I did this journey in the 80's with a hefty staff discount (I think we only paid for the sleeper upgrade), and honestly the cabins look the same just 40 years older. I would expect better in 2024, including electric charging points, not just the shaver port. Thanks for the review.
@@debthomas2078 Honestly, I really liked the meals, no complaint for me there 🤷♂️ As for the cabin, I think I just got unlucky, as the other times I have used this service the cabins were fine (besides the occasional coffee stain and mites in the blankets, which i happen to be allergic to [had a fairly bad reaction after this trip]). You're not wrong about the cabins looking the same, economy and first class have undergone a couple of refurbs here and there with a major one couple months back, but sleepers have mostly remained untouched besides several deep cleans during the pandemic. It's ironic how the sleeper cabins were at their best DURING the pandemic rather than unsafer. As for modern amenities like charging points, that's what we get for our not so great governments and the lack of money they're putting into these.
I thought your narration was great, you covered everything and speak very clearly. I found it very informative. I enjoyed being able to look at the menu. This video would be especially useful to someone planning on taking this trip. You know what you are going to get. I loved the onscreen graphics, map and info about the train. And that you divided the video into sections with timestamps. You took the time to do your homework ! Great job for your first fully edited review video - they aren't easy to do.
I really enjoyed this video, and contrary to another commenter, I think your narration and editing are quite good. I liked your detailed description of the cabin and your honest opinion on your personal experience of this journey. I noticed that you want to have cinematography as a possible career, and I think you have potential. I would like to see you do more of this type of video as your usual short videos only scratch the surface when illustrating your talent for videography. I have subscribed, and I look forward to more videos like this. You did a great job with this video. Well done 👏 👍

@raildoestravel you're very welcome 👍. There's always room for improvement, but don't be too critical of yourself. I am definitely looking forward to more of your videos.
The XPT was a great train in 1982. It was a good train in 2002. In 2012, it was OK for trips such as Sydney to Maitland. Now, it's just sad. Track hasn't been updated enough. The train itself is lovingly maintained to a standard, but all those creaks and squeaks and groans are train-speak for "please, kill me". And the replacement CAF trains will be shite as the engines are under the carriage. So much noisier. Well done NSW. Slow clap.
@@realjohnboxall Honestly, I do love how Queensland has made their regional network better. They have a modern diesel powercar system for long journeys and electric for closer journeys. It's still around as slow as the XPT, but it's more modern, sleek and comfortable. The XPT was a great train, but everything good must come to an end... And the NSW government isn't making that end a pretty experience

The main issue I see is there are only 2 services note Serivces a Day, the train from Sydney gets to Brisbane way to early and leaves to early meaning you have to get rideshare/taxi or someone to pick you up from Roma Street, the other service requires a Coach to/from Casino then a train from there
@@RailDoesTravelIts more a Capacity issue on the Merivale Bridge it's a massive chokepoint on the Network through hopefully when Cross River Rail opens that should reduce the capacity on the Merivale Bridge
@@rhettcorbett3346 We do have an official response from TFNSW actually, they allegedly don't make enough money from the class compared to the maintenance costs of the sleepers, i.e. cleaning, setting up, etc. Therefore to cut costs they're removing it.

@@yourfavouriteaircon For a majority of the trip you can expect for there to be zero wifi/mobile connection. There are pockets where it will work between sydney-newcastle and Brisbane to somewhere near the border, but for the rest the trip is very rural, and no wifi onboard either
The Brisbane network starts at around that time, and the Merivale bridge is a pinch point for the network. Due to QLD using 1,037 mm narrow gauge rail compared to NSW’s 1,435 mm standard gauge, the train can’t be rerouted via the Tennyson line towards the west, so QR requires the XPT to be in and out by peak hour (the train is only there for ~an hour before it leaves)
@@RailDoesTravelnot the tilt train, that uses a different platform and doesn’t go via the south, it’s the regular suburban services that it can hold up because there’s only one track it can use, and the track is at capacity later in the day
@@RailDoesTravelDaylight savings means 350am. Even worse. Shocking. If they hate foreign trains the government should start their own interstate service.

You cannot make Coupling Equipment for a train work quietly. A bit less of haphazard interior view and more details on towns traversed would have been appreciated. The video compares to other videos of this particular trip.
@@Ar-Rahman61 I've seen many ideas and proposals get thrown around, but if they're not going to upgrade the actual lines for both brisbane and melbourne to sydney routes and get in some good high speed trains (highly unlikely considering the government we have) our best bet is to maybe restore or rebuild the southern aurora to modern standards and attach it to a fancy new loco.
I admittedly do have a bias toward these trains as they are and always have been a personal favourite of mine, but I can agree the sleeper class is very underwhelming and not really worth your money. I don't have a problem with economy and first class as they aren't that bad, and my only complaint would be the journey time.. I do believe the sleeper class could use an upgrade
