- Today we are riding Mowgley!
This week he has a new hurdle to overcome.... but it is towards a good way!!! He is now taking the contact more consistently, but he is now often against the bridle. (previously he was mostly behind it)
Alicia explains that even though this moment can be not pleasant, it is ok to have the progression look a little messy as you go!

Geez, I wish my trainer told me "contact doesn't always look pretty" because I actually stopped riding my boy because he was doing THIS, up down, out, connect ...and repeat! I was scared I was gonna cause him kissing spines ...thinking he was hollow all the time. I love it how you show stuff not just on experienced horses, but also on green horses. I find those just as helpful, if not more. I also love it how you shed a positive light on the "ugly" and "bad" aspects of training a horse

I have watched this series in the past but really helpful to go back & reflectvon now, thankyou Alicia. This is just the sort of signs I'm currently seeing in my horse as she struggles to move from free reign or bitless riding to the new ways of dressage, being asked of her! You clearly demonstrate the steadiness required, during all the head movements & how all the manoeuvring can gradually lead the horse into taking the contact. It's inspiring to see we're on the right track, & to just keep on going! I love when I fast forward in time to see where Mowgley is up to now, & there just how far he's come using your system!! Mowgley is looking so good!! He seems to be progressing so well and is a quick learner. This really motivates me to get my 4 y/o OTTB going! We've been doing lots of groundwork, but I'm ready to get back on her soon and do some light rides. Loving this series! Thank you for your knowledge :)

Amazing Alicia you have just caught on camera whete I am with my mate. I feel far more positive knowing this is normal but they are connected. I need to do more turns etc to make her use her hind legs and be more supple rather than just going round the whole arena. Great thanks

My boy is talented but Im stuck in the contact struggle and know its because Im not positive with my hands, I want to cry with frustration, my boy is super forward & we get caught in the struggle but I can see I need to work in a smaller circle area and work the laterals..Ill watch the Scale of training & all the OTT 300 times more to absorb your technique...Huge thx from Australia

I tried moving my hands out instead of going along with the instinct to pull back when my horse would pop up out of contact and it worked! I was able to get longer periods of true connection. It was AWESOME! thank you soooooo much for your fabulous instruction.

I do have a question on this subject, in your case he throws his head up, what if he would really heavily go down with his head. Is it still activating the hind legs and getthing him to be more supple bij turning and doing baby leg yields?
Thank you! Good question, try not to think of it as a bad thing when the horse goes down heavily, this means he is seeking the contact but he is also going down heavier on his shoulders and forehand, so the horse is not balancing as much as it could on its hind leg. Try to be balanced yourself as a rider, work on circles and exercises that help the horse make the body shorter and carry more weight on the hind leg. Good luck! ✨

I love this 😻 this is the stage me and my horse is now 😹thought I don't want to push him to walk too high with his head yet but when he enters contact he goes againt the bit like this and he is just like this horse when I change direction or tell him where to go 😹

Good question! We are lucky that we have a quite big round yard so we can ride in there and change direction happily. So before riding in a bigger area Alicia is just looking to have enough steering and suppleness that she can safely help Mowgley navigate a bigger area.
You’re doing great with him Alicia! I’ve noticed though he’s so fussy with his head, have you had the bit lady out or tried different bridles? My horse completely changed for the better when I changed these things. Just a thought x

Thanks again for a great series. My green OTTB interprets my attempts at leg yield as a request to go faster. Do I try solve this by turning a smaller circle & trying to whoosh the quarters out (as you said) in a smaller turn? I don’t want sacrifice the rhythm but I want her to be more supple & less like a plank.

Hi Betsy, not too difficult once he was more supple, there are a few considerations, one is helping him with your rise as you see Alicia rising faster to set a new tempo for him. Then using quick aids and not nagging him and the suppleness in his body which then allows his paces to be to their full potential and be free.

I trained a horse in dressage and never used a round pen. Not even an arena... She won ribbons as a jumper. It took sensitive hands and sensitive movements ......and fun nature rides in between.

That is right, he struggles a bit more to the right so when changing to that direction it is a little harder. With time and practise with the suppleness he will get better in that direction x

Hi Robin! Update for you - This is a super question! Alot of people struggle with this same challenge. What I always say is not to think about the neck. Think about everything from the shoulder to the hind. Remember you can't control the hind end, you can only control the shoulder but somehow you have to bring the shoulder and hind leg closer. To get him up in the neck you actually need to bring the hind leg closer to the shoulder using things like shoulder in , leg yield etc. to a point where the rib cage shortens. That shortness is what pushes the shoulders up and the neck will come up with it.

HI Melanie, I am not sure but it is bigger than normal and perfect for being able to do some riding in before moving to the arena
This video is so helpful! I see so many similarities in my OTT. When I do the figure 8 with my horse, on one rein he is connected but on the other rein he falls out and turns his head and neck in and I lose connection in my outside rein. I often find myself over correcting through the rein as I’m trying to use the train track concept. Should I be be doing a squeeze and release on that outside rein and then leg yield inwards to help rebalance? It like the banana becomes too bananary ( it’s that even a word?!?) and has too much bend! I hope that makes sense! I end up using my outside leg a lot to stop him from flying out the side! Also another question. Would you tend to use spurs instead of a dressage whip?
HI there!! REALLY GOOD QUESTIONS!!!! Okay so yes absolutely it makes sense that his banana is too much one way, this is very normal and if you look at Mowgley he is too much banana to the left and Alicia spends a lot of time making him more banana to the right and less to the left. You are right in your correction but try to think about what part of the horse is falling out and it will be his shoulder so you need to use your rein to correct the shoulder. You can use some counter flexion if you struggle to keep his shoulder on the train tracks. You can also spend some more time on your circle to the right so he becomes more supple looking in the right flexion and bend in his body. Spurs can be better than a whip as you want the horse to respond to your leg not the whip at the end of the day xx

Wonderful video! I have a question though.. Riding an OTTB now - she basically leg yields on her own very often on circles in trying to avoid riding the circle I want. :D any advice on getting her more relaxed so she doesn't do that? (I've also seen other OTTBs for example jumping and they travel in a sort of sideways way to the jump.. so that's it..) Thanks!

Hi Sylvie! If the horse is going sideways, what that means is that the horse is very crooked. A basic exercise might just be riding around on the wall focusing on keeping the horse straight on the wall and then moving on to adding on some simple figures such as a shallow loop off the wall, 20 m circle, go across the diagonal and making sure you can keep the horse between your hands and legs evenly. Think of the shoulders as train tracks that the horse needs to always be following. Hope that helps! x

Nice dressage boots!! 1) Are comfortable dressage boots? 2) how many hours you wear dressage boots? 3) Why you have two pair of dressage boots?
Hi there! Yes dressage boots can be comfortable but they are harder on the outside than other boots so take some wearing in! Alicia only wears her boots while riding as this keeps them lasting longer - the more you wear them around while not riding the quicker they wear out! Alicia has more than one pair so that each pair can "dry out" between riding as the boots being wet is what makes them wear quicker, also Alicia has a pair of black boots which are just for competitions!! Great questions!
@@YourRidingSuccess 1) Why the boots are wet between riding, you sweat with dressage boots? 2) I imagine when you have done to do riding that you can't wait to take off dressage boots or not? 3) Are comfortable dressage boots for walk? 4) It's possible ride car with dressage boots?
Sometimes the boots can get wet from sweat (especially in summer) or even just walking around on a damp surface or hosing the horses off after riding - if the boots do not dry out between the leather stretches and stitching etc can rot. Not always rushing to take them off! When the boots are new they can be more stiff and not as nice to wear but after that they are comfortable to wear. We would not suggest driving in them - from a comfort and safety point! ✨

are you opening/closing ur fingers throughout? ik you’re doing the leg yields and opening your rein but what are your hands doing? pulses with the inside rein or are you strictly pushing him with your leg into a short rein

Hello Jinae! Thank you so much for your question! Try watching the YT video on leg yield and it would show you specifically on leg yielding on an educated horse and how that should look with your aid. And remember, with the uneducated horse, your opening the rein to show the horse where you want him to go. And the open rein mean that he can fill up that gap and get a better idea of where he needs to put his body. And your rein aid for moving the shoulder should be a push not pull aid that's diagonal. But check out the video on how to do leg yield and that will give you a better idea as it's already on an educated horse.

I'm wanting to change my bit - a cheap loose ring linked snaffle I got when I bought my mare. What bits do you tend to use? My ex racer mare is constantly chomping on her bit and she does the giraffe thing a lot and sometimes twists her head and neck and tits the nose the the left. I initially was stopping her when she did that thinking she was uncomfortable, but now i wonder if she has learned to get out of work by doing this.
Great question! A great starting point with snaffle bits is a basic loosering snaffle with a double join in the middle. Most horses do well in this bit, often the issue is not the bit but the connection. Have you learned some tips from this video and previous OTTB videos to help with connecting your horse?

Thanks for the suggestion! There are many different breeds, the OTTB is a very common breed people train for dressage after warmbloods so we started here x
@@YourRidingSuccess Well, yes. My suggestion was for the next project, not a comment or critism of the current one. I've retrained a polo pony who was (polo) stick shy so would never be any good on the field. They bring about a different challenge to OTTBs but viewers would see the rehab process is essentially the same.

@@YourRidingSuccess on some words it’s a little loud and it get kind of blown out. I understand needing to speak louder when you’re instructing someone. I guess I could describe it as grainy as well. That video you tagged definitely sounds better, some parts get a little bit blown out.
Maybe if the mic was put somewhere a little farther away? So you can talk at your normal volume, but it doesn’t get blown out.
