I'm still struggling with contact, like so many others. But what I feel I need (perhaps many of us too) is a clear understanding of what goes on inside the horse's mouth when we do things both correctly and incorrectly with our reins. Perhaps a video would be useful where the focus would be more on the "horse end" of the contact ?

Love this one. My boy flaps his bottom lip which tells me he is on contact.its. My boy is naturally high headed so its taken awhile and he will use it to evade work( a real rider) . We sometimes have to remind him we are really working and popping our head up at a transition is a no no.

This is where I am feeling stuck, and can’t move up the training scale. I have tried EVERYTHING. It seems to take about an hour for my horse to give to the contact at walk and trot. I would love a lesson from Amelia!
I think proper contact is the most difficult to learn and the most difficult to teach. I ride bitless now because of my mare's contact issues in a bit (curls up, headless horse), but contact is still the same concept. She's a different horse in a bitless. By the way, "scrambled eggs" works in a bitless too! ;-)
Great lesson - I will watch this again many times. The biggest issue I have, besides cantering, is contact. It has gotten better of late, but I find it takes a long while to accomplish this and to achieve the correct bend. Thanks so much. Will watch this again and again for sure!
Amelia’s jacket would probably help a lot of instructors/trainers/mentors clearly see what students/riders are doing! Can that be purchased somewhere ?
Timely advice for me! Yesterday my teacher said my traps aren't strong enough to stay engaged when I put my hands forward. The hands go forward but the back sags and goes with them so I lose my position. For years I've ridden with my hands too close to my body and now I find this is the reason. Not lack of strenth in the leg but in this very subtle part of the back which would also keep my shoulders down if it were stronger. I'm looking for a workout for those traps -- the only way to move my riding forward.
I have a the bad habit of ‘throwing the contact away’ when the horse softens… then I lose the connection. I am trying to find a ‘good place’ to stay in the contact. Any tips??!?

I struggle so much. I either have too loose of reins or I have too short of reins. Usually it’s too loose. But on very forward horses I tend to tense up and get very short reins. Even though I know my pressure and hold belongs in my half halts and seat. So frustrating!
I have always struggled with this. I used to be really stiff and hard on my horse's mouth, but now tend to err on the side of caution by being overly light. I have yet to get the feel of that "sweet spot".
@amelianewcomb my horse is young and green and is now having trouble keeping his head/neck steadily in the same position in our very small arena. He has contact and then sometimes puts his head up or down and looses his body but it now is is getting more frequent . I was told a reason was because my hands are too busy (he is sensitive) so I've started riding 99÷ off my leg. He is one if you pressure him too much that he will go behind the vertical yet he seeks the stronger contract. Then if I ride him with no rein contact he's perfect. Are there exercises I can practice to help this? Better yet can we take me out of this and make a stable way for him to find his happy place/balance without me? I hate gimmicks but they might be steadier than me at this point 🙄 Many many thanks for your wisdom and wonderful teaching. I think all of are so grateful for how much time you put into this! 🎉
HMM....well, it takes a lot of sensitivity in the hand and arm...you have to feel the mouth and be able to get a soft contact without pulling, and that means you have to give with the horses movement.
Thank you, Amelia. I find myself doing a chicken wing to one side or the other, trying to work on that, plus my horse fights contact by putting his head up in the air😔. Btw I just love Mercurio, what breed of horse is he? He reminds me of an Andalusian with that beautiful neck.

Hi Amelia. My Horse's mouth gets tense when we start work, especially when it's cold when we start the trot and the first gallops, then when he warms up he doesn't open his mouth or his jaw tenses. What can I do? The dentist recently did his mouth and everything was perfect.

Interesting that Stephanie at 3:45 says that sequence is fingers, wrists then shoulders. Shortly thereafter Amelia says fingers, wrists, then elbows.

It sounds like practicing going forward and keeping the rhythm will be helpful and adding in circles, change of directions and patterns.
