I use food colouring. Wiltons Pink, Lemon Yellow and Sky blue are the true primary colours used in CYMK printing. These 3 colours are all you need to make all the colours. I am a fiber artist and dye wool and silk with it. Use a bit of vinegar and heat it in the oven.
Thanks SO much for this video! I can't wait to try it. There's some great suggestions for dying here too. I do a lot of dye work so I'd like to share some tips, too. 1st is the saying: "Rit rhymes with s---" It fades, it's expensive, and I'd much rather give my money to the people at Dharma Trading Co. They are knowledgeable people, and they even have a sense of humor. I've called them with questions and been well treated. When they haven't had the answers (b/c I do a lot of experimenting), we've figured out the solutions together. Also, they've donated generous amounts of Silk, Cotton, Felt, Velvet, & Rayon 'remnants' to The Fabric Project for our Northern California Wildfire Survivors. And, no, I don't work for them. I've dyed all kinds of cellulose and protein based fabrics and, altho there are more choices, for all of them I prefer their Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes. I get nice jewel tones that stay vibrant for years, and the price rivals the inferior Rit dye. They are a powder so it requires mixing, but the advantage is that you have more control over the results. And the color choices are plentiful. The 2nd is that, especially because you are upcycling silks (which I love you for
Love your add on thank you pleas tell me a safe way to dry don’t own a microwave. Already blue one up on Thanksgiving day one s glass 🍲 with sweet potatoes 🍠 What a mess never again . Thanks for anyones help . God bless. You all are fabulous
The reason the DynaFlo is so much brighter and doesn't sink into the folds is that it is a textile paint, not dye. And the reason the Rit fades is that it is a surface dye coating only the outer layer of the silk fiber. I recommend d you try the Jacquard silk dye (greennlabel) and presoak with white vinegar.
@Genesis of Beauty in general when I dye we soak in what is called a mordant which can be white vinegar, water, iron water etc. Then wrap and add dye. Hope this helps
Any acid dye will dye silk very well. Dharma Trading Co makes a great acid dye that comes in so many colors it makes your head spin. Also if you don't like the smell of vinegar you can use citric acid instead. It's pretty odorless. I find jacquard products to be on the pricey side. Edit: you can actually also use food coloring with citric acid or vinegar on any protein based (animal) fiber. I know a lot of people that use food coloring or kool aid to dye fabric and yarn. If you are using a glass container you can heat set dye in the microwave, just wrap it in plastic wrap to keep the moisture in.
I loved learning silk and dyes in the shibori. I enjoyed so many details and how so many dyes worked after catched down on the cylinder! I love understanding about dyes that we find! Great !!Thank you
I couldn't find any silk items at resale shops. I ordered from Dharma.com. You can order white silk scarves of all sizes and cater to home dyeing. SO much cheaper that a fabric store too! Thanks for the inspiration. You are a joyous teacher! Thanks for all your sharing!
I have made my first shibori ribbons. Three gorgeous colour schemes. I can’t wait to use them in bracelets and pendants. Thank you so much for this great tutorial!
Hi Turtle, I used to do this in the 80's. Yep. I'm so happy seeing someone else do this again and you have inspired me! Don't laugh, I have two silk wedding gowns that will become my test subjects. Thank you.
Yes thank you I didn’t even have to go out yes !!!! This is amazing except I don’t understand how to dry it with the heat can’t use a microwave because I blue up my last one on thanksgiving day oh my goodness what a day . And when it blue up I was on the Top of my dryer getting vegetables down from my pantry. 🤪👍
Try adding vinegar to hot water just out of the kettle and once you paint the shibari, put it in to heat set it. Let it cool in the water before rinsing As silk is a natural material, you could also use gel food colourings for a great result with this method
I saw the Dyenaflow (Jacquard) 12 bottle set at Joann fabric store today, so if anyone is looking for them they still have them next to the fabric dyes! Hope this helps, people! Thank you SO much for showing this technique!!!! I have been dying to try to make this ribbon!!! Excellent video!!! 🤗
Hi I found a great trick for rit dye. If you use powdered alum in the water it makes the colors brilliant and take better. I was boiling the dye. you might try mixing it with boiling water to make a soak. give it a try. your heat set might just do the trick too.
Cannot wait to try this with various inks and colors. I love what you do it’s this. Your method is ingenious. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us! I love the idea of upcycling fabrics from thrift. I often find beautiful silk garments in my browsing.
Ooooo, what a great tutorial! Thank you. I just got into bead embroidery and was looking to buy shibori ribbon and haven't been able to find much. Silly me, I took a class on shibori dying years ago, but didn't connect that the ribbon is made with the same techniques. Duh. AND I still have some acid dyes meant just for silks & wools. Time to get messy. :-)
Your fabulous , I love your work thank you so very much for sharing this with me beautiful just fantastic Will follow you for more of your channel. Thanks again and Hod bless everything you touch.
Hi! Thanks for sharing your process. Your pieces turn out beautifully! Just to let you know, Dye-Na-Flow is a fabric paint, NOT inks. You might ought to try Inktense Pencils by Derwent. These are ink and once they dry on the fabric (and there is no more undissolved ink on the fabric), it becomes permanent. I love the Shibori you do! I am a silk painter and I'd love to try Shibori!
I had some of the Dyna Flo dyes and some silk from a scarf kit that I had ordered and never really did anything with. I cut the scarfs, I had two, and tried dying and found the Jakard left most of the colors a little muddy looking. Although they still were pretty in some places it turned out more camo looking than water colored. So I under dyed a piece in watered down yellow and, dried it in my oven on a low setting, then over dyed in red and orange and added some green. It turned out beautiful. I'm trying some blue at the moment for an ombre look. Fingers crossed that it works.
Love this. Also, the Ritt dye gives a more Earthy tone -vs- the Dyna Flow's jeweled tone. Either way, they are both beautiful and thanks for sharing. :)
You might like to play with stretching your silk on an embroidery frame ,putting on dabs of colour and then scattering sea salt, the stuff that comes in big crystals, it is magical
hmm, with the darker colours, could you wrinkle it and then paint with bleach and see how the component colours bleach out over a period? I've done stencil bleaching on black and blue jeans and it's pretty exciting
I found a huge ( extra plus size) 100% silk slip at the thrift store & turned it into a mountain of Shibori ribbon. Liquid Rit Dye and I were already fast friends from years of dying corn husks using it so my library of colors is nice & big. I found the other dye at Amazon and ordered some. I found by diluting it with some water I was able to get it to go into the folds.. but the sweet spot is it was a much lighter hue than on the outer layers. A gorgeous effect! The most important point here though is .. buy old silk slips at thrift stores! I think I paid $3 for the one I got. Peanuts for my mountain of Shibori ribbon. I keep looking at it and thinking.. that would make the most gorgeous Christmas ornaments !
Yes the thrift store is definately the way to go , but you got lucky I usually always find a xs slip but I still get a lot. Yes I was thinking about ornaments too ! If you look up shibori girl on pinterest she has some really beautiful flowers for ideas...
Thank you! I had no idea pleats could be made this way! Genius! 😁 You might try a small amount of vinegar or citric acid in your soaking water before you use your RIT dyes for brighter colors.

Gorgeous ribbon! Dye-Na-Flo is fun, but it technically is a fabric paint, rather than a dye, so it won't sink in as well. Jacquard's acid dyes are fantastic for silk. The acid used is plain old white vinegar (the kind you use to wash windows). A crazy number of colors and you can just mix up the amount you need. Also, silk is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water, so if you can let it soak for a while before adding the dye, you'll get better color penetration.
What a wonderful video Susan! I can’t wait to try this as I wanted to buy some but it was expensive and came in too large of a quantity for one color! Like you I probably would have saved it because it was too precious to use! Thanks so much. Jocelyn. 💕🤗
