@Laura55sere hi Laura, 👋. I used to sew as a teenager. Without knowing how difficult it was meant to be, I just nipped to our local market, bought some fabric and a pattern and off I went! Then life happened and Sewing took a back seat. I picked it back up after a few series of The great British sewing bee. You have been busy! Lovely makes. I have to say that I don't buy unisex patterns anymore for the very reasons you showed us....they don't fit. I love the dress for the cruise. It looks fab on you. Thank you for sharing. Suzanne

Hi Kay, what a shame the two projects didn’t fit. Especially the jacket must have taken a lot of time and effort! My mum always tell me to get something from my closet to compare the fit with the pattern pieces… found that very tiring but after a few misses it is a good tip to prevent these sort of issues. Well… at least nobody recognizes you in the jacket with the hood anyway 😉 loved your vlog! ❤
@susanneo8674 Hi Susanne, that jacket took forever. But all is not lost, I can hoick up the sleeves and pop a big jumper under for winter walks. Your mum sounds a clever lady, that's a brilliant idea. And it might sound a bit of an effort, but not comparto the effort of making something which doesn't fit 😅😅😅. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, it was really helpful 😘
As several others have said, check the finished measurements. Also, measure a similar garment in a similar style that you already own and compare measurements to the finished measurements on the pattern or envelope. Also. Pay close attention to sleeve length and width as many patterns are either too long or short or tight there. Pin the pattern piece together along the seam lines and hold up against your body matching center front and back (be careful to handle gently so pattern does not tear). This will give you a general idea of size, although I don't find it as accurate. You have to pin out pleats and gathers, etc. but it will point out major discrepancies. Also. You can cut out "muslin" using an old sheet of the major pieces-front, back and sleeve and baste together and try on. Make changes with pins or mark with a pin. This will give you an idea of how the garment will fit w/o taking a lot of time. After making changes, take the muslin apart and use the pieces to compare with pattern pieces of any new projects you sew. Again, this gives only rough idea of fit, but will help alleviate disappointment after spending hours on a project that does not fit. Finally, perfect some simple projects to give yourself a feeling of accomplishment and then tackle a more diffucult one. It is easy to get discouraged. You need a success after a disappointment to revive your confidence. You learn from mistakes and each one builds your sewing skills
@kathleensmith1522 Hi Kathleen, you are so kind to take the time to type out such a brilliant comment. I've read through and the next time I make a pattern new to me, I'm going to make a muslin as you suggest. I've got a charity shop duvet cover, so I'll use that. As you say its frustrating using up good fabric on something which doesn't turn out right. And what is it with sleeves!?! I've had all sorts, long, short, massively wide, unbelievably tight. You sound like a very experienced dressmaker, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge😘
Great vlog as always kay. I always read the finished measurements on the front of the pattern piece as they always add extra ease in and I normally go down at least one or two sizes.
thank you Michelle, I really do need to start reading the finished garment sizes! that's a great tip. I do like my parka, so I want to make another, but maybe a bit smaller 😁😘
@gretchenw2613 thank you so much, you are very kind. Mistakes are all part of sewing and learning and I do find some of them hilarious 😂. And occasionally, some of them turn out exactly as planned and I'm quite amazed that I actually made them😘
Echo the finished measurements, but on some patterns, I swear the Company of Big 4 decided we were all not taking into account the ease we need, so have fudged the finished measurements list, found on piece 1 always, or in a wardrobe pattern, the front pattern piece will have it. I actually measure it, with a ruler, do a little math, know what ease I want, and cut out whatever size happens to fit. I’ve sewn long enough, and strangely I know, my body simply doesn’t change a whole lot, that I can tell at a glance more investigating is in order. The jacket is lovely, but clearly a bit big, as the polo shirt. Both geared towards men’s sizes. Some patterns have different patterns for men and women, some expect women to know what men’s size they wear. Which is probably a smaller…….nice job, tho. I really like New Look, and love the shirt dress. Take care.
@craftymystic4868 thank you so much for taking the time to write your comment, it's very helpful and I agree. I think the Big 4 ease is way over what it's supposed to be in some patterns. A couple of people have mentioned measuring the actual pattern pieces as well, and that's what I'm going to do next time I use a pattern new to me. I'll still wear the jacket, once I've sorted the sleeves and I think I can take in the polo top so all is not lost 🙂. I was quite surprised at how nice the shirt dress turned out, and I'll be making more for next summer. Thank you again 😘
Kay, your jacket was a hoot! That hood will definitely keep the rain off your glasses. I hate when my glasses get sprinkled. I really like the looks of the Anca pattern. The fabric you used on your version was lovely!

I do feel for you with the sizing although you did make me laugh!!😆. These days I spend as much time going through measurements as I do sewing!! There is no consistency at all and Big 4 are definitely the worst. I measure every pattern piece and deduct seam allowances to check the finished garment measurements relative to my size and the look I want. Tedious but worth it. You Roseclair dress is absolutely gorgeous and it is so lovely to see your joy with it. Such a lovely, refreshing vlog - what I call real life sewing 😂😂😂. Happy sewing. Lynne😊
@SewMyTime Thank you so much Lynne, I'm glad you enjoyed my vlog of mixed results 😄. You are so right with the Big 4! I don't normally use them much, I'm a Cashmerette girl, but sometimes they have a pattern you need 🤷♀️. I'll definitely be measuring those pattern pieces's in the future. That's a brilliant tip, thank you 😘
Great makes even if some not quiet as you imagined! I do find the unisex simplicity patterns come up even bigger and always go by the finished garment measurements or measure the pattern pieces.
@nicky-Sewandsnip Hi Nicky, its a very good suggestion so I think I'll be measuring those pattern pieces in future, thank you for that.....I feel it will save me a lot of time and fabric 😘
Hi about the polo top and especially big four patterns I always open the pattern sheets and look for pattern piece nr one ,they always put finished bust measurements on the front piece (before that my stuff always end up at least three sizes too big) they have enormous wearing ease built in Your Roseclair dress is stunning
hi Paula, thank you that's a great tip. I sometimes check the finished sizes on packets, I'll start looking on the pattern pieces now. I think I'm used to the 'indie' patterns, which tend to come up the size I'm expecting them to! I just love that Roseclair dress. As soon as I saw the fabric I knew what I wanted to make with it 😘
I’ve given up with big four/five patterns…too much ease, even with checking finished measurements (should you be able to spot them) … I use Indie only now …. I feel your pain
@@pinkderdlesews hi there, yes I do prefer indie patterns too, since I live in Sweden ,there is not much difference between indie vices big four patterns in price, patterns are expensive here 🥰
@deniseblake6214 I think I'll be giving them up too! I love my Cashmerette patterns and I know I don't have to adjust them ......but sometimes I just get tempted away 🫣😁
Oh gosh you did make me laugh 😂 Honestly this is why I don’t like “commercial” patterns - most are HUGE but the one you think will be massive and sew two sizes smaller turns out to be the only one with accurate sizing and comes out tiny 😢
@alwaysinthecraftroom oh you are so right!! I've done that and ended up with something fit for my Sindy doll 🤣🤣🤣. I love my Cashmerette patterns....I put my measurements in the fit calculator, it says what size to sew and voila...it fits! Glad I made you laugh, l made myself laugh too 😆 😘
Well that hood is gonna keep the rain off 😅. Is there maybe a separate pattern piece for men/women in the unisex pattern . I did a unisex onesie pattern once and the pieces really confused me with sizes.
Hi Emma, I think that hood would keep a monsoon off 😆.However, not so handy if I want to see where I'm going. I did get all the pattern pieces out and didn't spot any separate ones. Mind you, there were a lot! I'm definitely going to have another bash at it.......possibly the 'small' rather than the large, so I'll double check . thank you for the tip 😊😘
Great first a giggle ..but not for you.. you need to check finished measurements rather than seeing according the size you think you are. Love your sense of humour and how you’re able to laugh at what’s gone wrong.
@chrisorchin7955 thank you, well I had to laugh at that jacket it was so ridiculously big 🤣. I'll definitely be checking finished sizes and quite a few people have suggested measuring ghe actual pattern pieces too. I think I'll be doing that in future especially for big 4 patterns 😘

@@marjawood5097 yes, I won't be buying anymore unisex. I think they come up too big on women's figures because the bust/shoulder ratio on ladies is completely different to the chest/shoulder ratio on a man 🤷♀️. Ah well, I've learned something new 😘
I’ve read that it’s best to go by the finished garment measurements, rather than the pattern sizes. The amount of ease is perhaps what’s challenging your choice of pattern. Next time make a muslin before cutting into your beautiful fabric. That works best for me.
Yeah I was also going to suggest that. It was my biggest mistake when I first started to sew. I always made my stated size and each time it was just way too big. It was watching a video on here that said they use the finished measurements and bingo no more massive makes 😊

@@pinkderdlesews I find it really helps as I sometimes need to cut one size smaller on my shoulders than my bust!
Hi about the polo top and especially big four patterns I always open the pattern sheets and look for pattern piece nr one ,they always put finished bust measurements on the front piece (before that my stuff always end up at least three sizes too big) they have enormous wearing ease built in
Your Roseclair dress is stunning
hi Paula, thank you that's a great tip.
@paulamattsson8583 oh that's a shame they are so expensive 😕. I don't think we realise how lucky we are in the UK
Hi Kay. Love your videos! and your makes... (You do realize, that the name of your channel shows as "Kay Eldred", right?)
@MonaMilne-es8hw oh thank you, glad you like my videos, I love making them. And, no, I didn't know it comes up as Kay Eldred!!!! I'll have to go and do a bit of techy stuff now and get it sorted 🔧🔨🪛. Thank you for letting me know 😘😘
@@MonaMilne-es8hw yay! I think I've changed it 😁. Thank you again 😘
@@pinkderdlesews Yes, you did! 👍
Hello Kay
@@brendastevens8325 hi Brenda 👋
I also found unisex patterns to be way oversized for me, which is the main reason I no longer buy unisex pattern.
Hi, so sorry I haven't responded to your kind comment before. I've started to use the finished garment measurements now and am getting good results, so thank you for that tip 😘
@@bevtooththank you for your tip sorry its taken me so long to respond. I'm using the finished garment measurements now and it's working better. I'm also not using unisex patterns anymore as they really don't suit my bodyshape 😘
Measure the pattern pieces before you start
@murielbailiwick2978 Hi Muriel, thank you that's a great tip and I'm definitely going to do that with patterns which are new to me 😘
How disappointing for all your hard work! I hate when this happens.
@donnabronner4837 Hi Donna, thank you. I was so cross when I realised the jacket wouldn't fit. Especially after being such mammoth sewing project. But I put it away and now I can see where I can adjust it and I've also thought of it as a big learning experience. So many ladies have been kind enough to suggest tips for my next sew. Isn't the sewing community just the very best to belong to. Thank you again 😘
