- "Stranger on the Shore" is a piece for clarinet written by Acker Bilk for his young daughter and originally named "Jenny" after her. It was subsequently used as the theme tune of a BBC TV drama serial for young people entitled Stranger on the Shore.
Real Name: Bernard Bilk
Birth Date: 28th January 1929
Birth Place:Pensford Somerset
Bilk earned the nickname Acker from the Somerset slang for friend or 'mate'. His parents tried to have him learn the piano, but Bilk as a boy found it restricting upon his love of outdoor activities including football (soccer). He also lost two front teeth in a school fight and half a finger in a sledging accident, both of which Bilk has claimed impacted his eventual clarinet style. He eventually learned the clarinet while serving in the British Army, and by the mid-1950s he was playing professionally.
Bilk has been described as "Great Master of the Clarinet"
Here I stand, watching the tide go out
So all alone and blue
Just dreaming dreams of you
I watched your ship
As it sailed out to sea
Taking all my dreams
And taking all of me
The sighing of the waves
The wailing of the wind
The tears in my eyes burn
Pleading, "My love, return"
Why, oh, why must I go on like this?
Shall I just be a lonely
Stranger on the Shore?
The sighing of the waves
The wailing of the wind
The tears in my eyes burn
Pleading, "My love, return"
Why, oh, why must I go on like this?
Shall I just be a lonely
Stranger on the shore?
Words by Robert Mellin
this tune always chokes me up, takes me back to a simpler time.
In the mid-1960s, I was a student at the University of Manitoba living in residence. We had separate female and male dorms. But, we had a common dining room, coffee shop and auditorium. Every Sunday there was a dance in the aud with recorded music. This song was almost always the last dance of the night. Met my wife there with this tune, and after 43 years we are still going strong. Thanks Ray!!
Acker Bilk a musician with a name that will live on for ever. RIP old fella.
This is the song that made me want to learn to play the clarinet. Hearing myself play the clarinet was what made me want to just listen to the song.
I have loved this music for ever but i danced to this in paris two weeks ago with someone I can never be with. It brings tears to my eyes.
This song reminds me of my childhood, growing up in the 60's--I wanted to learn the clarinet because of this beautiful song! RIP lovely Mr. Bilk...
I played the clarinet in orchestra and marching band for 6 years and counting, but there is absolutely no way I could play as well as this gentleman. He is a joy to listen to, and, in my opinion, the very best!!!
Happy memories. When my daughter was born, I hummed this tune when I held her for the first time. Im smiling thinking of it. Thank you so much for posting this.
Grew up listening to this fella. Brings back very happy memories. RIP Acker Bilk.

This song reminds me of my late father as well. When I was very young, he wanted me to learn clarinet and the first song I ever played was Stranger On The Shore. It brings me nothing but beautiful memories of him and I have it downloaded on my IPOD so I can hear it when I think of him...which is always.
I love and miss you Dad.
I've wondering, since getting a clarinet, whether there've been any really well know, iconic clarinet tunes. Kicking myself cos, I'd completely forgotten this guy's stuff! Brilliant!

Met this guy once before in Llandrindod Wells - It was a wonderful evening and happy memories
Tks for the music. I hop, many years later this song will be played by many others as it is unforgetable.
Truly one of the most romantic enduring instrumentals of the last 50 years. I took up the clarinet as a 12 year old in 1962 and this was one of the first pieces I learned. It still affects me as much today as it did then. Acker Bilk showed the world that the clarinet doesn't have to sound shrill , that it can have a 'soul' of its own , different than the sax as Pete Fountain also proved with his remarkable 'fat' tone.
RIP. this one will live forever.....
The first time I ever heard this beautiful song was on a teen club jukebox on Jekyll Island, Ga. I think I was maybe 15 or 16 and this is still a favorite of mine.
this brings me back alot of years! to a more peaceful world! what ever has happened to him
Set this as my alarm clock tone.
Fell back asleep and arrived late for work.
Some tunes you just never forget
Many years ago, I ran Acker home from a gig at Oxted Surrey to The Avenue, Potters Bar, where he was living at the time. It was a memorable journey, that's for sure. Acker was as natural a guy as you could possibly get to meet. RIP mate. Barry Watson ( Harmonica)
remember my late brother in law and sis in law dancing to this down at the gun pub in croydon so many many years ago

This always has and always will take me back to the black and white TV and the series of the same name. How many other pieces of music last for so long. It's magnificent. Thank you Acker R. I. P.

A NOTHER great player Mr,Acker Bilk Stranger on the shore
For as long as I can remember, Acker Bilk was THE famous clarinetist but I was reading his obituary I realised I didn't think I'd actually ever heard Stranger on the Shore. Turns out I was wrong, it's such a timeless piece that I must've heard it a hundred times without a name put to it. Beautiful playing.
Amazing as my beautiful dad would say being a wonderful musician himself what a freak xxx

Goodnight Acker. Heaven just got much more melodious x x x x
I remember in the early 60s going to a movie in Birmingham, Alabama. I had to be in 4th grade. Before the movie, a “short film” was presented of “Mr. Acker Bilk” driving up in a Rolls Royce, stepping out and playing “Stranger on the Shore”. I wish I could see it again. It was absolutely magical. It caused me to ask my parents to buy me a clarinet, and learn to play. Hearing this brings tears to my eyes.
Yes - it was originally released in the 60's and was hugely popular - a timeless piece.
I feel lucky to be raised in the time and age of such beautiful music! This is eternal, it is that good! What a gem!
