- Tasker 101 Tutorial: Lesson 19 - Trigger Task w/ Notification from ANY other Android App
In this lesson, I show you how you can use the notification from any app on your phone/tablet to trigger a Tasker Task, even have notifications from the same app trigger different things based on their title.

Very useful for the morning thanks
THIS is what I have been hoping to learn about!!! Wow - thanks!
You're welcome!
Alarm Xtreme sounds like a good application suggestion, i read it's description and it says that it let you choose radio (and maybe podcasts?) as your alarm and stuff!
Can I by putting UA-cam channel name in the notification event title, can I automate tapping on the notification with auto input?
And will only this UA-cam notification and no other trigger the task?
I am looking for a way to perform an app function inside a game when the game server sends a certain push notification.
Ie. Push notification=> app boots=> a tasks is performed inside game app...
Hi, thanks for your videos. Do you know if there's a way for tasker to disable heads up notification while I'm using a specific app (e.g. periscope)? If tasker can't switch off heads up...it would be ok if I can disable notifications at all too, and maybe re-enable them when I close the app. Thank you!
I can't say for sure there is no way to do either of those, but no way that I know of. It's definitely not a built in feature of Tasker to disable notifications. I don't think it would be possible at all unless you are on a rooted phone. I'd suggest asking this over in the Google Groups Tasker Forum. If there is a way, someone over there will probably have an idea/suggestion.
Thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
Hey thanks for this....it's doing pretty much what I want, except I have a slight issue. I'm trying to make certain emails notify me differently using a certain ring tone. My problem is that my regular notification ring tone plays too. I'm wondering how I can make only the special ring tone play. Thanks.
Sounds like maybe you have your phone set to notify you via a ringtone (probably in the settings of your email app). You'd want to turn that off if you're using Tasker to make a sound.
will this work on kitkat?
Great video
Thanks!
your tutorial is really good, i was wondering if you can help me do similar thing with ring app. ive got ring pro bell, which i have to click on app or notification to see who's on the door. i just want the app to behave like when someone presses the bell my tablet open the app without clicking on anything. Thanks
Should be possible - I can't necessarily guide you through the process, but basically assuming the ring app makes a notification on your phone when the doorbell rings, you could have that notification trigger opening the app. If you have to tap something inside the app to get to the actual video, you might need to use the AutoInput Tasker add-on app to emulate tapping the right button. If you need further detailed help, I'd suggest posting in the Google Groups Tasker Forum. Have fun!
How can I create opration below : 1- input action click point ,2- input action click point, so I have 2 click point , I want if item wasn't available so run next item (2- input...) , But in app ,when it can't click on first item so I see error and it doesn't run next item how can I set it?
can you do an updated video using the latest tasker?
Unfortunately I don't have a way to do that. I no longer have an Android phone as I switched to iPhone. I realize a LOT has changed in Android and in Tasker since these vids - I leave them up because the overall principles still apply.
hey I had a question I'm trying to automate a pop up inside an app,the pop up doesn't show in my notifications bar it's only inside the app. I've tired using autoinput to click on it but the pop up happens at different times so that hasn't work for me any help I would appreciate a lot thanks.
This
I'm on my way to making tasker do what i'd like... but its a long process since im not exactly a programming/computer expert... im trying to develop a whole set of Profiles & Tasks to manage all of the notifications i get from August & Nest to reduce false alarms and to notify if there is someone rummaging around the yard or in our cars. are you still actively using tasker? any new tutorials?
Kind of. And no. To expand... I do still have Tasker on my phone and I have a few profiles I've been using for years that run on it. But I don't have the time I once did to mess around with it a lot or develop new profiles the way I did when I made these tutorials. Which is also why I don't do the tutorials any more...and haven't added a new one for years. What you want to do can probably be done, but it is the kind of thing that definitely takes some time because you're pulling info out of various notifications from various apps then the "hard" part - figuring out how to do different things based on what's in the notification. It can certainly be done using info from my tutorials and others around the net about working with notifications.
+hollywoodfrodo I got a question with this. I got the Galaxy S5, which offers to set text shortcuts when you long tap one of the numbers. basically you can set 10 standard texts. But I want to use Tasker to launch an App when I long Tap 0 and intercept the built in function for the Text Shortcuts. That possible?
GREAT username!!! But you're not gonna like this answer - I don't honestly know. Almost anything is possible but many things like that require super deep scripting/programming knowledge as well as possibly root access. It's definitely not a built in Tasker capability. If the built in function is using intents, there may be a possiblity to make tasker do something based on those intents, but using intents is super advanced and a little complex and something I've only used once and am definitely not a master of... But that's what I would research if you want to try to find something on the net. Also try Google Groups Tasker Forum - some really smart guys over there who know about these kind of things.
Thanks ;) LOTR fans everywhere xD
Well I figured it wouldnt be easy, thanks for the quick answer tho. Gonna ask the guys over there then ;)
Also thanks for the great tutorials man!
Greetings from Austria ;)
How could I invert this? I need profile that is triggered when "Alarm" disapheres from notification.
+tforgo Off the top of my head, I don't know of a way to trigger when notification "goes away".... You could check out AutoNotification Tasker Plug-in and see if that has this feature. Otherwise, ask over in Google Groups Tasker Forum - someone over there may know a way.
Hello
I am a ball in programming.
I'd like to be able to create a profile tasker who opens an application and issue a sound custom when a notification of it arrives.
I have autonotification, and despite all my attempts they are remained without result.
thanks in advance for all help
Ps: I have no knowledge in English je ne parle que français
Assuming you just want to open up a specific app when a notification from that app arrives, you don't need AutoNotification. Tasker could handle that alone. The info in this video should give you what you need (unless you're looking for something different). You just need to choose as your Profile Trigger: UI > Notification -- Then Press "Owner Application" and choose the specific application you want to trigger this. Then Create a Task to Launch that application when the profile is triggered. You can also add to the task to play a custom sound.
Unless I'm not fully understanding what you want to do, that should do it.
Does anyone have a tutorial on how to cancel the one single notification if app=hangouts has a notification from a member in specific contact group stored in my Android contact settings? I have someone in my family that sends me group messages all the time so I'd like to cancel that notification, but still want to receive other hangout messages
You could try AutoNotification, but honestly not sure if that'll work for what you want... It's difficult to dismiss notifications outside of the app itself.
I am trying to add something in tasker hollywood :( Where I work I lose 3G sometimes depending where I am. A app displays "Would you like to reconnect?" my options are No and Ok. Is there a way to hit the ok button when this happens? The app is Alfred btw
You want automate hitting that button without actually having to touch your phone, right? AutoInput Tasker Plugin can most likely do that. I use AutoInput to automate "touches" on my phone for that exact purpose.
Yes thanks .....sorry for not updating my concern but yes AutoInput indeed solved my problem :)
I already learned a ton from your tasker videos, but I have a question. I have an app called self control which blocks other apps for a set amount of time, so I can't play games when I'm studying for example. This app displays a notification while a block is running. I want to toggle the notification LED based on wether that notification is there.
I got it to turn off the LED when the notification appears, but I was wondering if there is a way to turn it back on when the notification disappears.
Thanks in advance =)
That's a hard one because there's nothing that detects when a notification disappears... I can't think of anyway to do it off the top of my head. Maybe try posting over in the Google Groups Tasker Forum. It's something that could have a lot of potential benefits for other profiles.
hollywoodfrodo Thanks for the reply! I'm glad it's not something obvious that I've just been missing for some reason.
ssmoky94 If you're still interested, take a look at the Notification Watch for Tasker plugin on the play store (unfortunately not free). I recently was looking to do a very similar thing with the disabling of a smart alarm and so far this has worked for me.
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.zalio.android.tasker.notification&hl=en
Also check out the app "AutoNotification" (by same author), as I believe it handles all of these use cases and many more with Tasker.
try the app ourpact
hollywoodfrodo , thanks for the informative video. It seems that notifications of missed calls or voicemails aren't recognized by Tasker. I assume that the _Owner Application_ in question is the *Phone* app, but even when I leave the _Owner Application_ setting blank, no luck.
Missed calls has its own trigger inside Event > Phone. If you want to use the caller info, calls also have their own variables with that info - Call Time, Call Date, Caller Name, and Caller Number all have their own variables.
Thanks, hollywoodfrodo . I have been able to use the "Missed call" event, but the type of notification that pops up for "New voicemail (*)" is apparently no longer recognized by Tasker. I suppose that's why everyone seems to use one of the Notification plugins. Am I correct there?
Sounds right. You could possibly still use Tasker but choose no owner app (meaning any notification) but then add an IF statement so that it only triggers IF %NTITLE (the notification) contains the words "voice mail" or whatever your voicemail notifications contain. You can use asteriks to ignore other words like **voice mail** - I'm sure I have more info on that in a video somewhere... :-) Anyway, that's how I would likely do it.
I've tried various permutations of **voicemail**, but Tasker doesn't seem to even "know" that a telephony-related notification has appeared, while it does recognise other notifications. *_If_* you have the time, could you try this and let me know if it works? Thanks
So after some frustrating trial and error testing myself, I took to the web and found out this is a known bug/issue with some devices. So strange!!! I mean the notification is obviously there, but Tasker doesn't see it. I even tried the AutoNotification plugin, but that doesn't see it either. One person mentioned using the app Better Voicemail Notifier Pro as a work around, using the notifications from that app to trigger events in Tasker. (Noticed a few other similar apps on Google Play that may be worth trying.)
I set up a profile that would trigger on any notification and flash a message "There was a notification." This works if I send myself a text, for example. However, I have widget (from an Android app I wrote) that posts information to the notification bar, and nothing happens at all! Is there something special I have to do when my widget posts the notification?
Did you create the app using Tasker/App Factory? What does the app do? What does the widget do?
hollywoodfrodo It's a native Android app. It accesses data from a Web source and updates a widget, as well as putting some data in a notification. If you look for "APS Status" on the Play store you can find it.
hollywoodfrodo Someone on the Tasker forum solved this. Tasker only triggers on ticker text (.setTicker) not on the regular text (.setText). Too bad, doesn't entirely work for my application since I don't want ticker messages posting every 60 seconds.
***** Ah, that makes sense. I was still trying to figure out what might be the cause. Glad you got an answer - good info to know for the future. Thanks for sharing!
Hey I'm trying to get a task to perform when the select input method pops in the status bar I followed this video with no victory any help?
Hmmm... Yeah, that's a hard one because I don't think it's seen as a "notification" even though technically it's in the notification bar. I'll have to do some digging and see what I can find - what is it you are trying to trigger when the input method pops up?
When the keyboard is out I wantbtasker to trigger a task that contains a secure settings plug that disables certian apps that block my keyboard while typing.
I tried the when keyboard is out trigger but it doesn't work detecting when the keyboard is out is not working and that's why some of my apps don't hide when
The keyboard is out and just for more info I use google keyboard
T.M. Wrath I did some research and apparently this just isn't set up in Android to allow Tasker to be able to use it as a trigger so it's not a built in Tasker thing. However, if you want to do some complex stuff, there is sort of a work around - I asked over in the google groups tasker forum and got a couple of answers: groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/tasker/keyboard/tasker/4tlNpsGBuZE/Ko_RgOA3HFsJ
Thanks man it sure will help
While messing around though I did get ahold of away to activate daydream without being docked or charging if you want to know that?
T.M. Wrath Cool - how did you do that?
How to send all notifications to an email address???
That's more than I can answer in a quick response - I'd suggest posting in the Google Groups Tasker Forum to get more info on how to do that.
i have encountered a serious problem. I'm trying to set this to open an app everytime i get a notification from the app but the app won't open unless i open it please help.
Are you using profile: Event > UI > Notification? (Not notification click) then selecting the app from the notification? Then having the task it triggers an activity to launch the app?
If you got all that right, then it might be just a case of needing a slight delay in the task before opening the app.... Try it and let meknow
let me get this straight real quick before i try this. EVENT/UI/NOTIFICATION/APP. i forgot to mention the app is kik and I'm trying to set it to open the app itself everytime i get a notification. that way it'll already be open and i don't have to click the notification to open it. I'll try what you just said and see if i wasn't doing it wrong
i even tried putting in a wait command and got a notification from the app 20 minutes before the time that I'm writing this post and still the app won't open. I'm sure there is more to it then I'm thinking but whatever it is I'm missing it somewhere. trial and error is the price to pay for an app that does so much with commands and variables that it makes Albert Einstein look like a 4 th grade special Ed math teacher.
Haha - yeah, sometimes Tasker can be frustrating but only because it's can do so much and really is like learning a new programming language.
it really is which is good because it gives us an understanding on how the language works. eventually by the time we get everything together between profiles and tasks everything will be so intertwined that at that point we would need lessons on how to sort it out.
