I make protein shakes with flax seeds, aples, milk and oatmeal. Needless to say tuna and chicken are specialties here at home. Food is much cheaper in Portugal though.

I think the main thing that comes to mind in that "cool shit" vs "budget healthy" protein is grass fed vs corn fed. Grass fed meats have a better balance of your essential acids, where corn fed the stuff is out of balance from the meat not having a healthy diet itself.

I can get boneless chicken breast for 1.99 per lb, ground turkey for fairly cheap. eggs a little over a dollar a dozen. good deals. another good point to make is buying in bulk. a 10 lb bag of rice at walmart is only 5$, thats a lot of rice. 5lbs of macaroni for only 5$ too. You just gotta develop a keen eye for value

I am a fish eater and I much prefer it over chicken, but recently ive been seeing people saying not to eat Tilapia because it's a bottom feeder and they have less nutritional value than opposed to salmon, tuna, etc. what are your thoughts? I usually just try to buy what's on sale, but it can be cod, tilapia, trout, sole, salmon. does it really matter? Also, I go through these weird phases where I'll be super pumped and focused in the gym for a few weeks and then all the sudden I get super tired and flat and it's hard to finish my workouts. Do i need to be eating more, resting, sleeping, supplements? I feel like I make a lot of progress and then these sudden speed bumps of fatigue hit me. Just curious on your opinion. thanks
Here's some stuff I've picked up, hope it can help someone. Find a dollar store. 5lbs of russet potatoes is a buck at mine, and 3.50 something at the Walmart next door. When they have strawberries, I can get a pound for a dollar, which is 2.5x cheaper than Walmart, too. The quality can be sketchy, but since these are foods you can easily check for quality, it's not a big deal. I often buy celery there too, which is great for a snack when you put peanut butter on it. I buy boxes of tomatoes there as well. The dollar store's inventory changes all the time, so whenever I need to make a run to Walmart, I just do a quick look through there too, to see if there are any new good deals and pick up my regular stuff. Eggs are super cheap. I eat 6 or more eggs every day. 6 eggs is about 36 grams of protein, and you get all sorts of healthy fats and vitamins from the yolk. I can get 36 eggs in a pack at Walmart for 2.56 or something like that, which is about 7c per egg. The price of eggs nearly doubled at the end of last semester, but even then it was cheap. (It's come back down now and it makes me happy every time I buy eggs.) The cheapest way to get them is in 60 packs, Costco usually has the best deal. Besides that, eggs seriously last forever. You honestly don't even have to refrigerate them, but they will last longer that way. Rice is way cheaper than potatoes if you don't mind cooking it. A 20lb bag is 8 dollars. I'm still not through the one I bought 6 months ago. If you wanna do the oil thing here, you can get two big jugs of olive oil for 11 dollars at Costco, which is significantly cheaper than other places. Those jugs could last you months or more. Canola oil is pretty bad for you. $2/lb is about as cheap as you can find meat. Chicken breasts or thighs are that much at kroger and Walmart, and you can often get hams for that or a little less. I recently found a full ham on sale at Costco for $1/lb. Hams like those are great too bc they're ready to eat, no cooking necessary. Spiral sliced is super convenient, you can bag it up and put half in your fridge and freeze the rest. Hamburger is usually a little more expensive, you can get 5lbs for 2.29/lb where I shop and sometimes I get that for variety. Spinach is great for getting your vegetables in. I have a smoothie with a bunch of spinach in it every day and it's great. Every time I'm at Costco I get two big bags for a little over $4 each. I freeze one (to store long term, it still goes great in smoothies) and use that once I'm done with the one I put in the fridge. Bananas are real cheap, 56c/lb at most stores, and make a great snack, go good in smoothies, great for slicing up and adding to oatmeal, eating with peanut butter, etc etc. I eat oatmeal all the time. I care about the quality, so I get Bob's Red Mill steel cut oats. Even buying this, which is pretty expensive as far as oatmeal goes, it's cheap. I have a pressure cooker, so cooking it is extra easy. Buy steel cut oats if you can, as they're better for you and taste better.

Brrraaadd I need help you beast. Well I have a few questions. I am a fish eater and I much prefer it over chicken, but recently ive been seeing people saying not to eat Tilapia because it's a bottom feeder and they have less nutritional value than opposed to salmon, tuna, etc. what are your thoughts? I usually just try to buy what's on sale, but it can be cod, tilapia, trout, sole, salmon. does it really matter?
Also, I go through these weird phases where I'll be super pumped and focused in the gym for a few weeks and then all the sudden I get super tired and flat and it's hard to finish my workouts. Do i need to be eating more, resting, sleeping, supplements? I feel like I make a lot of progress and then these sudden speed bumps of fatigue hit me. Just curious on your opinion.

Here's some stuff I've picked up, hope it can help someone.
Find a dollar store. 5lbs of russet potatoes is a buck at mine, and 3.50 something at the Walmart next door. When they have strawberries, I can get a pound for a dollar, which is 2.5x cheaper than Walmart, too. The quality can be sketchy, but since these are foods you can easily check for quality, it's not a big deal. I often buy celery there too, which is great for a snack when you put peanut butter on it. I buy boxes of tomatoes there as well.
The dollar store's inventory changes all the time, so whenever I need to make a run to Walmart, I just do a quick look through there too, to see if there are any new good deals and pick up my regular stuff.
Eggs are super cheap. I eat 6 or more eggs every day. 6 eggs is about 36 grams of protein, and you get all sorts of healthy fats and vitamins from the yolk. I can get 36 eggs in a pack at Walmart for 2.56 or something like that, which is about 7c per egg. The price of eggs nearly doubled at the end of last semester, but even then it was cheap. (It's come back down now and it makes me happy every time I buy eggs.) The cheapest way to get them is in 60 packs, Costco usually has the best deal. Besides that, eggs seriously last forever. You honestly don't even have to refrigerate them, but they will last longer that way.
Rice is way cheaper than potatoes if you don't mind cooking it. A 20lb bag is 8 dollars. I'm still not through the one I bought 6 months ago.
If you wanna do the oil thing here, you can get two big jugs of olive oil for 11 dollars at Costco, which is significantly cheaper than other places. Those jugs could last you months or more. Canola oil is pretty bad for you.
$2/lb is about as cheap as you can find meat. Chicken breasts or thighs are that much at kroger and Walmart, and you can often get hams for that or a little less. I recently found a full ham on sale at Costco for $1/lb. Hams like those are great too bc they're ready to eat, no cooking necessary. Spiral sliced is super convenient, you can bag it up and put half in your fridge and freeze the rest. Hamburger is usually a little more expensive, you can get 5lbs for 2.29/lb where I shop and sometimes I get that for variety.
Spinach is great for getting your vegetables in. I have a smoothie with a bunch of spinach in it every day and it's great. Every time I'm at Costco I get two big bags for a little over $4 each. I freeze one (to store long term, it still goes great in smoothies) and use that once I'm done with the one I put in the fridge.
Bananas are real cheap, 56c/lb at most stores, and make a great snack, go good in smoothies, great for slicing up and adding to oatmeal, eating with peanut butter, etc etc.
I eat oatmeal all the time. I care about the quality, so I get Bob's Red Mill steel cut oats. Even buying this, which is pretty expensive as far as oatmeal goes, it's cheap. I have a pressure cooker, so cooking it is extra easy. Buy steel cut oats if you can, as they're better for you and taste better.
What if you live in Santa Clara County? Everything is expensive here
