- After having some clutch problems, the car finally hooked up and made a couple decent runs at the drag strip. 1973 VW Super Beetle with a 517 whp Subaru engine on e85.
The piece that makes the Subaru 5 speed transaxle spin the correct direction
is a Subarugears reverse ring and pinion.

That is the cleanest VW ive seen. It looked like it was being shot out of a bow on those 2 good runs! Im glad the clutch held together for you. I know it had to feel good winning your 1st race! Congrats!
"Won my first race!" Smoked the other guy cold!! It a small miracle of physics that the keys stay in the ignition! Absolutely OUTSTANDING!!
Nice job John, looking really good. Got your shifts down to perfection, in the end. Practice makes perfect!
This car is a beast, just looking at the 8th mile alone, well done sir.
Good to see it hook up and run some hot times. The clutch must right on the limit of it's capability. Cheers Rob
Very nice Super Beetle. Awesome work. Thanks for the wild rides.
Nice John! Love seeing the car run.
One could confidently say it's easily a 6 second VW Beetle my God what a beast!!!!! TRUE SLEEPER ZERO DOUBTS. You, John Reynolds, are a genius.
Way to go John 🙌🏼
You did great with your vw, it`s so beautiful. Looks ordinary and humble, but amazing powerful! I love it. Wish you to win more races, good luck.
Awesome!!! At the end of the day it’s badass no matter what!!! It’s gonna be a rocket once you get that twin disc in.
Very nice!!! Great Sleeper!! Congratulations
That's pretty fast for a bug! I've been waiting for this but it was worth it.
that sounds so very good. Hope you get the good clutch. I was one that mentioned Spec in alabama.. I had one on a subaru boxer with dual range, oversized tires and about 110hp (killed the factory, all versions)
Show de bola esse seu Fusca Fafá! Parabéns! 👏🏻👏🏻
Congrats with winning the race. Car sounds awesome.
Some race. He spanked that poor Mazda BIGTIME. And showed no remorse.
106 in the 1/8th? Time for Fastest Car on Netflix!
Very nice build, I'm impressed :)
One of the cleanest subi swap bugs I've seen nice.
It's a good day when You don't have to drag it up on the trailer for sure!
Wow! Impressive but scary as hell - my beetle's brakes failed from time to time and I remember gearing down and using the handbrake to take evasive action - it's all coming back to me now ! Heartrate is coming down now !
Love it, ultimate sleeper. I cannot wait until you have the clutch 100%, it will be awesome.
This bug is so beautiful, I'd be happy as hell with it if it had 1/10 the power. But this just makes it the ultimate, in my eyes!!
I love how the front raises up between gear shifts. The car is awesome!
I just saw your beetle on a different channel. That beetle is fast. I subbed your channel because I wanted to see more of this car.
Same
Nice job John
Looks like the other guy had a Fit!!!
something like that. Wasn't much a race but a win is a win.
Wow, pretty fast Bug you got!
Well done.
It's working. Props
I believe rlr makes a really good clutch(for vw 200mm flywheel) I would try contacting them and see if they can set something up for you. If it slips the harder it will grab. I believe they call it a rev6 clutch
Good stuff!
1320 video HAS to feature this crazy bug, with some minor changes and good luck I bet it can hit less than 7"
There's a few less tenths in it if it was driven more aggressively. Just wanted some clean runs without breaking anything.
Interesting stuff. Proper clutch may help or break a few parts.
So happy the algorithm showed me Nicole's video with the bug & that the OG13 legend has a yt channel. I love feeling inept when I get to work on my junk after watching these. These vids are so inspiring I try to get my carb dialed in & feel like a pro!
Good job
So cool!
Love that back seat view. Can almost feel the pull as the front lifts up. Congrats. My mom had a 73...so brings back some memories.
It would be much faster if he could shift it fast enough to keep it off the limiter, but its a learning curve, you also dont need a clutch to shift a dog box just a good twin disc clutch with the preload & counter weight set up right
Good job on a fun car
Great couple of runs John. Glad to see you got it down there even though you had clutch troubles. How is the Corvair coming?
Fabrication requires me to wait for all the parts to come in. Currently, I'm waiting for custom rims with deep back spacing.
Impressive runs there John and good luck with sourcing the clutch. An observation regarding the steering, do you possibly suffer the opposite of bump steer when the front comes up under power and could it be improved by restricting the strut extension but maybe it would make tire contact "light".
The front struts are already cut down so the up-travel is limited, but I think they are weak in general. I'll look into something else.
Man that bug be buggin out!!!!!!!!!!😱😱😱😱😱😎😎😎😎😎😎
I never thought I could be a criminal. I am currently reconsidering..
Need lotsa dollars
Swap to Porsche 915 box. You have a nice Porsche clutch disc with many high power/slip options. KEP can make you a flywheel that uses subaru pattern but will work with Porsche 915 box. Car is great btw. Very clean!
You don't want to drag a 915 tranny. They are not a powershift tranny.
Any transmission can be a "drag tranny"
The reason I said that is because the parts are available and there are many variations for power.
@@baxterscientific the gear cut angle on the 915 is not a tranny you can hammer through. Spirited shifting in twisted, yeah. But drag racing? No.
Do you think they dont make different gears for the 915 transmission?
Would you say the Subaru transmission is a better drag transmission?
People have been racing Porsches far before they were racing Subarus in that capacity. There are straight cut gears made for 915 transmission. They make ALL kinds of gears and a multitude of strengthening techniques. If he went 930 trans he can pound it to kingdom come in stock form as well. The 915 trans can handle a serious beating ESPECIALLY if built properly.
@Jeffillinois
I guess my statement was "can it be done" but it will cost you an arm and a leg so I will have to say you are correct from a "more bang for buck" idea. He could have a benco 3 rib bus box set up specifically for drag racing for seriously less $$. Context is tough in comment section I meant you no ill will.
Very Good!..
Oh yeah!!!
Ich liebe den Käfer immer noch.
Love it , looks good and runs better, thanks BigAl California.
@John Reynolds; Congratulations with Your 'First Race You Won - First Victory"! That clearly must Feel GRAND ! - Obviously from Your immediate reaction, smile and expressions afterwards too. 😃👋🤜👏😆😁🤗
The announcements heard in the recording from the tack announcer were also entertaining any funny too. 😂
"... a turbocharged Super Bug. very easy. can you still get 30 mpg and 200 plus HP ... "
"... 701 and 106 miles an hour for that innocent looking Volkswagen Beetle ! That;ll put a smile on Your face "
😃
My biggest laugh, actually fully out loud, extended was seeing the last in-car camera view of You John, after the victory win run, clapping, expressing excitement and joy aloud 👋🤗, from the left side, with Your racing helmet on, visor up and seeing a lt. blue surgical type mask,😷 covering Your mouth and nose too. 🤣🤣🤣
But, while outside, no mask - thankfully.😂
Did the track require that nonsense too .. inside the vehicle ??!! 🙃
As You well know, that fibrous, porous, breathable covering, does not block any fumes, nor moisture thus is absolute nonsense with micro droplets and more so micro organisms. 😉
The Answer my friend is Blowin' In The Wind, the answer is Blowin' in the wind" 😁
Well, that's the absolute NONSENSE, Authoritarians in CA! 😵💫
Am looking forward to more with this 1973 B -Turbo-Subaru and especially Your 1967 Corvair LS4 trans-mounted, mid-engine vehicle! ☺
[65-69 body are my favorite (my father had a '65 for ten years - actually wanted that car for myself, but my parents, more my mother, wanted it 'gone'😟 - it just needed a new tie rod, heater modifications, oil leak - mostly valve cover gaskets - would have been a delightful build too, also in 1975.😏]
😌
All The Best and Much Success in Your Quest, Health and Well Being 😊
Sincerely ☺
The short answer to the stupid mask is I forgot I had it on, lol.
@@JohnReynolds661 the main comment about the stupid mask, is any 'CA rule' especially at the track ...
besides every where else.
Maybe gold star racing clutch would help
Bad ass!!!🏎💨💨💨💨💨💨🏆🏆🏆
Would love to see what it does in the quarter! :D 7sec and 106mph is no joke! guessing under 11sec and about 135mph
My guess is high 10s also. Not sure how many 1/4 mile runs I will do.
@@JohnReynolds661 Yeah I'm done doing drag racing with mine. I've been building mine to take to Sonoma. :) Nothing near what you have done though. Incredibly impressive!
My GTR runs 10.1 and your car seems so smooth from the inside camera. Very non violent hahaaa
That poor little Focus SVT got drug!!!🤣🤣🤣
Sweet! How's the corvair build coming along?
Fabrication requires me to wait for all the parts to come in. Currently, I'm waiting for custom rims with deep back spacing.
Little beast bug
*John, do you plan to attend the Sacramento Bug-O-Rama 29-30 May 2021, or Bug-In #45 @ Irwindale on 20 JUN 2021?*
I plan to be at the Bug-in #45 as it's close by. Stop by and say hello.
What’s it run a 1/4 mile
High Tens ?
New speed term - Mile Per NOWER!
Love that beetle 👍👍👍
Laser focus the entire run.
realistically, what does the basic subaru swap cost?
I've heard 10-12 grand. I'm sure it can be done cheaper as it depends on how much of the work you do.
I guess that's an eighth mile? In my day, there were only 1/4 mile strips.
They changed after a bad top fuel accident that killed the driver
For the most part, cars are now running too fast for the 1/4 mile.
@@JohnReynolds661 I see. Thanks for the info.
@@bigunone Thanks.
@@snekmeseht I had to search for the reason myself. I hate to say I don't keep up like I used to
In Jamaican parlance. It bad nuh blowow!!!
John how much torque is the trans rated for?
Good question. There have been a lot of modifications done to the tranny so it's really hard to tell. Rest assured, it's definitely being pushed to it's limit.
So 7 second 1/8 mile is pretty bad ass!! What does it do in 1/4 mile?
I can only guess since I've never done it.
@@JohnReynolds661 My brother used to run an bug in the 11's for a 1/4" . Then again it wasn't a daily driver. The Bug ins were great.
So was it a 7sec in 1/8 or 1/4 mi ?
1/8th. Works out to high 10s at about 135 mph in the quarter.
For real...don't kill it...enjoy it....build another mid-, flat six , compound, sequential, ...😳😬😜
That VW made the other car look like he was stopping WOW
Ripper. Freakin Ripper.
Have you thought about trying a single disk 6 Puck clutch
I tried one. It's too harsh on the trany.
At this level of power why not use a Corvair two speed powerglide. The powerglide will hold up to that power level and be reliable.
lol "30 mpg while close to 200 hp"...uhh try 500 hp! Great car thanks for the vids!!
Ha, yeah and it will never see 30 mpg the way I drive it.
You should be telling us the time and mph on each run.
What is the redline/shift RPM?
I take it to about 7200
I’m telling you put a torque converter in it. Class 1 open wheel that’s all they run 800 horse ls with Mendeola transaxle
I wish I could. The distance between bell housing and the center of the axles on a converter manual is too large. It would mean the engine has to push back and will not fit under the deck lid which kills the sleeper look.
------------ bug be gone ......proven to exterminate the competition....
I am still wondering why a dog box trans versus one with synchos? Synchromesh is one of the best inventions for manual trans. OR, use a dual-clutch trans like many supercars or (heaven forbid) an automatic trans?
Also, there is a fellow in the UK who has built a 600 HP Tesla powered VW Beetle.
ua-cam.com/video/TUJpAIxjo1c/v-deo.html He doesn't trailer it around. He actually uses it as a daily driver. He states he has had it up to 140 MPH. I'd really like to a match up between this car and the Tesla powered car.
A conventional synchromesh transmission small enough to fit in the confined space needed is simply not strong enough. A dual clutch system like you're talking about is awesome but there is no room for that in this tiny car. Dog engagement gears are stronger by design and they are also faster to shift. I've seen the electric bug, very cool, but it's an apples to oranges comparison. There's every engine swap imaginable. I chose the Subaru because it compares to the flat four configuration of the original VW engine.
@@JohnReynolds661 Thanks for the reply and explanation. I'll be checking back to see if you get a stronger clutch installed.
I love that Beetle. Was that an 1/8th mile or 1/4?
That would be the 1/8th
Have any plans for the 1/4 mile run
Not really, I like doing 1/8ths
It would do well on a 1/4 mile, one time for the viewers?
@@gouddrofwarc1982 Yap, would be good to see it line up against Gerrets Leroy
They make you wear a mask under your helmet? That’s insane
It was a mistake, I forgot to take it off.
@@JohnReynolds661 I’ve seen some crazy requirements so I didn’t know. Awesome build. Hoping you get the clutch figured out. She’ll be stupid quick.
Why the mask under the helmet? Is that required there? Just curious..
Total mistake, I forgot it was on.
@@JohnReynolds661 it's cool. I just thought you didn't want to give the car covid. It's running pretty good.
Boa noite a caixa de cambio é de que marca
Velocidade do Subaru 5 com anel e pinhão Subarugears e PPG 1-4
Can't you put a 2-speed automatic in that thing?
I wish but there isn’t a auto transaxle that can hold the power that also fits in the small space.
One bad bug
🇿🇼🇿🇼🥇
Get rid of the dog box‼️😎👍
I like it because it makes me pay attention.
Sure glad you're wearing a mask😂😂
Yeah, forgot I had it on. Stupid mask.
Monster Clutches
"200+ horsepower" try 500+ announcer dude!
Lol wild 😅
I'll race you !
I'll be in the pro eliminator class at Bugin 45
That means I wont get to race you I'll begin Real Street class
Maybe the Thursday night before the race. There is always lots of people testing.
I went to your channel to see what you're racing. I got nothing for you as I'm not in the mid 6s. Good luck in the Real Street class, maybe we'll meet.
See you! I'm just trying to grow my you tube channel
Cool, hope we meet.
love this bug.
2 people are goofy. ( 2 dislikes =‘s goofy )
Try getting a trans brake
Trans brakes work great with ... automatics.
Need to work on your tree timing 🤪
True that, but to honest, I wasn't even trying to cut a light and left when I was ready.
👍
You might benefit from breaking in that clutch a little like you would break in brake pads.
Don't drag race and your clutch will be fine.
Clutch Masters
In Rialto
I was thinking torque inverter to create a buffer
AWD that baby!
