oh my god!!Brilliant, you were here filming and interviewing us??:D I wish I could have been one ,Ii love your work, I usually run there every afternoon watching sunset!! U r fabulous!
It's beautiful in the way it mimics natural growth patterns. It looks kind of like a jellyfish or a flower. Very nice.. What an undertaking. It must have cost a fortune... Its size must make it an amazing experience at almost any distance. I wonder what the google sattellite pics look like....?
Really strong work! Nice synthesis of local references, mathematics and spatial play. It's pathetic that people here are complaining about the cost when (1) they didn't have to contribute a cent to it and (2) cities generally throw away far more money than that every week on cost overruns, corruption and waste. At least with this sculpture, there is a lasting focal point and something for the locals to take pride in (as they clearly do). I hope you do a lot more such work.
for everyone who is saying this is just a big net: shut up!! it may not mean anything to you, but for the people in my country, who have a very close history with the sea, it's a very beautifull monument. so thank you Janet Echelman for your work. i just wishe it hadn't cost as much as it did... especially because of the upcoming crisis and its high maintenance costs, i heard they are going to take it down... it's a shame really.
For all of those beneath this comment who have put this down as "a waste of money" should shut up NOW it is an amazing piece of creative art YOU try building one yourself if you want to insult this one
Wow this piece is just sublime. I can't help but think of jellyfish and how fragile they are when I see this. I was wondering if the circular hollow underneath the main body of work is also an intentionally constructed part of the final work? Either way, this sculpture is nothing short of beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing more like this in the future. (Now I just have to find a way to see one in person!)
I like this a lot. Art for art's sake. Something not strictly representational. I like representational art as well, but love abstract as well. Good job!
This is cool and all, but it doesn't change too much. If the holes in the net were a bit smaller it would catch more wind and sway more, but that could also create a bag in the wind effect, and it would be destroyed, either way, it's beautiful, new, and original. I like it :D
they've removed the net in the last week and they are repairing it now.. half of the net was hiting the ground and the "moving" effect was gone lol , but it will not move anyways when they place it back
Art is not just paintings on canvases or sculptures in museum exhibits as the majority of people think art should be. It can be movement, a concept, an idea, an expression, or a symbol. Though I have to admit, 1.6mil is a large budget. Making that net shouldn't cost THAT much unless it's for buying the property it stands on, installation, permission from the government to put it in a public place, etc. etc. o_o
I really hate it when people refer to this as art. In a sense, it is art, but overall, I thinks it's pretty cool. You can actually see when the thermal air currents are at their peak, during the middle of the day.
orangebownanens (to my comment , 3 months ago) I did not really mean that we needed to go out and catch fish from the sea for $1.6 million children (I was being sarcastic). I meant that the money could have just as easily been donated to a good cause , like to "feed the children" or maybe given to build an art school for the underprivileged .
3:25 OMG, I think I also fell in love with her laugh :P It sound so cute! -it's from an american woman - yeah, ... ahaa... mee - ahh, you?! - :D Five stars!
WOW. what beautiful irony. Really. It's lovely, the fishing net as an homage to the poor fishermen. And gorgeous, the way she intertwines it with the red and white pattern of the industrial smokestacks. The juxtaposition of the simple, beautiful old life of the poor-but-satisfied that was overtaken by the rich-and-greedy; it fits perfectly to have it represented with $1.6 MILLION. BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T HAVE, SAY, USED IT TO BUY NETS OR BOATS FOR FISHERMEN WHO CAN'T AFFORD THEM?
The only way I can see this "sculpture" that seems like a fishing net to me, would come into my understanding of art would be IN an Jackie Chan move... He could fall from a building or so and land in the net... Or a fighting scene in that net would be nice :D
Yeah, except here in Phoenix, AZ we are spending $1.4 million for one just like it. The main difference is that we are calling it a 'desert flower' so it doesn't sound quite as stupid. It really looks like a jellyfish, though.
@bubb1egir1 if you are a rudimentary person, who would only see the basic, then you won't see all of the background, it is a fishing net suspended off the ground, but it would be nice if you acquired more knowledge.
the mayor of this town like other portuguese mayors has a kind of fetish for expensive and low quality sculptures in roundabouts, this one is, i think, the most interesting public art in Portugal.
The money spent on public art in general is tiny! Especially compared to say the gazillion of shopping centers and malls?... To me this is not a waste. Just to point out that the cost of this project is not only plastic and net, it is also the giant pole (undoubtedly steel) and cables for mounting, as well as the installation labor and equipment costs.
this is sad because one year ago some students from universitys that came for a important festival from Oporto had made holes to the net and ruined it while drunk or NOT!!!
to be able to appreciate this you must not consider the price spended.... of course there are better(a lot better) ways to spend 1.6 million, but you have to say this is pretty cool...
If people were spending more money to create beauty, there wouldn't be the money to create destruction. That's my personal philosophy on life, the universe and everything.
Why is the artistic community at odds? Have we learned nothing from the works of Picasso, Monet, O'Keefe, Dahli, Michaelangelo, Da Vinci? What does it matter what the onlooker or beholder sees with in a work. A work is ment to dredge up feeling, much like a fishing net, catching its fish. One can never know what is caught untill the net is displayed for all to see. Don't be negative because a common fish is caught with an exotic. All are wonders to behold.
Dynamic - brings to mind a vortex of energy with ripples and harmonics of change propagating it's surface. Timeless.
Cara Janet Echelman
Magnifiant sculpture in my hometown. Many thks
i LOVE these sculptural forms...just beautiful and appreciated!
Absolutely wonderful.
there is a new one going up in downtown phoenix by Janet. I love it. I can't wait until it's done....only a few more weeks!
I love your use of Mum's music!
Oooh that is gorgeous... kinda like a jellyfish underwater. I'm not much of a jellyfish fan, but I love the way they move
Wow. It's beautiful.
It looks like an inverted water drop ripple :) Its very nice consept to display rippled wind art. I like it!
oh my god!!Brilliant, you were here filming and interviewing us??:D I wish I could have been one ,Ii love your work, I usually run there every afternoon watching sunset!! U r fabulous!
thank you
Very innovative and money saving art work.
Unmm..it cost 2.5 million dollars
It is just a giant net. Its cool...caught many peoples eye. It does look really cool.
It's beautiful in the way it mimics natural growth patterns. It looks kind of like a jellyfish or a flower. Very nice.. What an undertaking. It must have cost a fortune... Its size must make it an amazing experience at almost any distance. I wonder what the google sattellite pics look like....?

i live close there aahhahaha
is really a very impressive work, I appreciate a lot the people who did is
Hai notato che trascorsi 2 minuti della registrazione, inalto a destra: spuntano delle luci bianche?
We don´t have a choise. Just have to cope with them. I think this is beautiful.
hermoso, una delicia visual
for everyone who is saying this is just a big net:

lovely art. sad how some people cant appreciate it.
amazing! who commissioned it and how much it costs?
It's a sculpture, In the center or a large round about, And it's called 'She Changes'
realy is beutifull in the wind nd at night
Anyone else notice it's actually a DEVO HAT!? Epic win.
I live in Porto ... this "anemona" is lovely =)
who composed the first song. its awesome
It's privately-funded.
And it is beautifullllllllllllll.
looks like a lot of birds get caught in that thing, and probably really good pogostick jumpers...
beautiful
is it still there?
would have thought aging would be a problem...
it reminds me a lot of a piece that sits in my town. its called "cosmos" by aristedes demetrios.
Anyone know the name of the song and the group that did the music between 0:00 and 0:42? I need to know x___x
its very..........interesting....
i'd love to lay under that. i love the ring of ground under it. shame it's surrounded by roads, because it'd be a cool park addition.
This is cool and all, but it doesn't change too much. If the holes in the net were a bit smaller it would catch more wind and sway more, but that could also create a bag in the wind effect, and it would be destroyed, either way, it's beautiful, new, and original. I like it :D
@thetravelinghermit you're so right!
they've removed the net in the last week and they are repairing it now.. half of the net was hiting the ground and the "moving" effect was gone lol , but it will not move anyways when they place it back
What's the first song in the video?
-refrains from jumping into the argument-
LOL the first guy made me laugh lol...
also the little kid...i'm sorry
yea,yea.... excellent masterpiece
Where in Cambridge is that?
yes,yes it is
awesome work. the price is a little overwhelming though...
Yee!!! Matosinhos em grande!!!
What's the name of the first song in this video?
Looks like a spacecraft taking off, and the red netting is the force & smoke behind the ship taking off. o__o
Energy dome FTW!
It reminds me of a wormhole or a black hole exhaust.
thats modern art for you,
most of the time its just better not to ask...
would someone tell me what is this
looks like a trawl for flying animals. just wondering if this can be used at countries with epidemics from flying bugs like mosquitoes
What's that first song playing?
Did many birds get caught up in the net I wonder?

It really looks like a giant living being
wish there were some of this stuff in the places I live in...
I really hate it when people refer to this as art. In a sense, it is art, but overall, I thinks it's pretty cool. You can actually see when the thermal air currents are at their peak, during the middle of the day.
for those of you who put -1 for sanaa50, saying "this is sick" is agood thing cause sometimes "sick" means "awesome".
so um they spent $1.6mil on what is basicly a giant net hanging from a steel ring?
No one happens to know the song from 1:47 to 2:54? Is it also by Mum?
no , it doesnt snow here.. we are very close to the ocean and the temperature is always mild.. so the probability to snow is very low
I wonder if their TV gets good reception now.
Wait, sculpture? Looks more like a giant net to me... What's the exact definition of sculpture then...? o_O
does the local wildlife play with it?
how many birds does it kill per day?
orangebownanens (to my comment , 3 months ago)

the labour was likely the big cost here
I'd love to see that with my own eyes
wat is it?
It looks quite cool I guess.. doesn't really change shape, jusy moves in the wind
3:25 OMG, I think I also fell in love with her laugh :P
It sound so cute!
-it's from an american woman
- yeah, ... ahaa... mee

Five stars!
there is one in Portugal et's biiigg!!!

LOL I wanna drag that behind my boat.... go find "nessie" the loch ness monster!! seriously though, it's pretty cool!!!
some sculptures look like the phantoms of "final fantasy" (the first movie)
What's annoying is, a big net has been on more holidays than I ever have.
I wonder if any birds get caught in it.
i have something like that in my school : )
a student is working on something alike
@bubb1egir1 if you are a rudimentary person, who would only see the basic, then you won't see all of the background, it is a fishing net suspended off the ground, but it would be nice if you acquired more knowledge.

dont wanna be mean, but im agree with you
Questions: whats the point of this thing?
this is sad because one year ago some students from universitys that came for a important festival from Oporto had made holes to the net and ruined it while drunk or NOT!!!
I don't remember any of that stuff in ny
to be able to appreciate this you must not consider the price spended....

WOW
City Matosinhos Powaaaaaaa!! =D

@er6789er My friend, different people have different opinions. You have no right to judge that way.
If it glows at night, it would look nice.
@bubb1egir1 you could go to any museum and say.. oh thats just a tree..a woman...a sky etc...
i dont get it. its not a sculpture
@USmerchant55 Shh...it's quiet time for double posters...night-night
The most impressive about this is its cost. :/
shit! this is sick!!!!!!!!!
