Julian grew up local to me, so there are a lot of people around with stories about him. My teacher said he played with him at an open mic when he was 9 years old, and he absolutely just tore it up. Julian is the example of godly natural talent and probably a ridiculously solid nervous system, but I think what got him to this point at age 16 was sheer determination. From age 5 he knew he wanted to be a guitar player, and he was just always learning from that young age. We can all learn from that
I think I hear a lot more bebop lines in Julian's playing at this age than even some of the videos on UA-cam from his early 20s. Even though he has his own creative style it still seems his earlier playing was rooted in the jazz tradition.
