  • In this video, we'll paint up some 1/35 scale figures for my Black History Month project on the 761st Tank Battalion. The 761st, known as the "Black Panthers," were a segregated US Army Tank Battalion during WWII that served attached to Patton's 3rd Army from the Fall of 1944 through to the war's end in Germany in 1945.
    The 761st was one of the most successful & highly-decorated armored units to serve during World War Two, earning a Medal of Honor & numerous Silver Stars (among other citations).
    Today we'll practice painting black & brown skin tones on a couple of tanker figures. People of color often don't get the same kind of representation as white folks in the hobby of scale modeling, so it's important for us as scale modelers to hone our skills so we can honor & represent the brave men & women who've served our country from all different walks of life.

    Hello from Scotland! Thanks for another excellent video and with a worthy subject matter. Much respect for promoting this often overlooked aspect of WW2 history. Maybe the model manufacturers should be making figures that better reflect the appearance of black and brown serviceman rather than you having to essentially paint white soldiers black? Anyway, I've taken much inspiration from watching your videos so please keep it up!

      Thank you! And agreed - definitely some room for better diversity from the manufacturers. Appreciate it & take care 👍

      I was thinking the same thing Dean but props to Hank for doing it anyway. I did the same for a pilot figure in a P-51, Redtail plane.

    Hi Hank I really appreciate this video.
    I'm first generation Mexican American and growing up here I would only really learn about the war in a kind of broad and general sense, rarely ever diving into like the history and stories of people of color who served. Not until I did my own research as I grew and got into history that I learned for myself how much Black and Brown people actually did during the war, and as you mentioned how they returned to segregation and deportation despite their service. So I really appreciate you making a video like this and talking a bit about this subject.
    If I can be as bold as to make a request I'd love to see you make an Aztec Eagles P-47. "Aztec Eagles" was the nickname that was given the 201st Fighter Squadron. They were a Mexican Air Force Fighter Squadron made up of Mexican pilots and ground crew. They were trained in the US and then were attached to the USAAF 58th Fighter group where they took part in the liberation of Luzon in 1945. They're really interesting and are definitely worth a Google. They flew P-47D and I'd really love to see you make a plane with the Mexican Air Force roundels and everything.
    Great Channel and keep up the good work! 👍🏽

      Hey there! Thanks so much for watching & for the feedback, I really appreciate it and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. And thanks so much for the recommendation on the 201st! I'd never heard of these guys... that's really cool! I've been itching to do another P-47 for a while, and this might be my excuse! 😁

    Great vid about a topic that is not talked about nearly enough. BTW, I might be wrong, but I think a closer match to US tanker boots would be Vallejo flat earth or tan earth, rather than red leather. Also, an easy way to get good highlights and shadows is to basecoat the miniature in black, then spray white directly from above to highlight all raised detail, then build up the base color with several passes of glazes.

      Thanks! And you're probably right - I just like the way they look with the Red Leather 😁 And I've tried the airbrush highlight technique, too - it works pretty well 👍

    It woul be nice for some Resin figures to be made in not ethnically white complexions/facial structures. Unfortunately painting white facial shapes doesn't yet do it justice. I'm sure we'll see it within a few years!

    Your figures look great! But even with how careful you were to minimize the white I still kind get that "pop-eye" look when I look at them in the vid. You might try using a very light version of whatever color you're going to use for the iris color instead of white. I'm just spit balling here. I'm not nearly as good as you at painting figures. But I do agree with other people that at this scale you really wouldn't see the whites of anyone's eyes at the "distance" we're looking from in scale feet. 1 foot away would be 35 scale feet. 18 inches would be 50+ feet. JMHO, maybe something to consider. Keep up the excellent work!

      Thanks! Yeah... it's a tough balance. Sometimes I avoid the eye whites all together, but this time I wanted to give them a go. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Great job. Hank these look amazing. One question I have on these figures is how long it took you, from to start to finish? I know you like building up layers so just curious. Keep up the good work.

    • @SpruesNBrews
      @SpruesNBrews  2 роки тому

      Thank you! I was going pretty slowly on these guys so I could capture all the steps on film, but I probably finished them both in about 3 hours of total working time over a few sessions. I try to step away after the wash stage to let the enamels really dry, and this time I gave them a full overnight 👍
