I’ve probably made 100 waving flags by now. Using utility knife blades to separate the union from the stripes is brilliant. Big time saver! Great job

Thanks! Using the blades does save a lot of time over taping.

@@sparetimewoodworker1505 idk if you still make these but a suggestion would be to make a Mylar template for the stars. I cut out 3 columns of stars on my cricut and use water based acrylic paint from the craft store and just lightly dab a sponge then tamp the stars column by column. The 3 columns on the template make alignment super simple and adjustments for the curvature. Whole union takes 5 minutes. Template is reusable so no more wasting vinyl.

@@sparetimewoodworker1505 awesome! A little goes a long way. Ball up the foam sponge tightly and dab a super light film of acrylic. Tamp it into your star template vertically. No horizontal wiping or brushing. You’ll either shift your template or it’ll bleed a little. Once you do a couple you’ll fly through it. Let me know how it goes!

Of all the methods of flag building I have seen on UA-cam, I really like the way that you clamp the pieces, do the grinding and then finishing. One question is since you glue up at the end and keep the glue toward the bottom, do you have any problems with separation at the top. Thanks for sharing your method.

Thank you very much for the nice comments. I haven't had an issue with any separation. I tried to put a little glue towards the top of the pieces, just not enough to squeeze out. Thanks for watching!

Great job on the wave designing. I agree the more intense on carving and sanding the more realistic it will look. What do you think about using 2x3s to cut down on weight and carving time. I'm thinking of starting a small size to try out and if it didn't work I wasted little time and material.

Absolutely agree on using 2 X 3s. This was super heavy. The ones I have made since were made with 2 X 3s.

Wow what a great looking flag!
After looking at a lot of DIY flag videos I liked your approach a lot. It’s giving me the courage to try a flag for the first time.
I went to the Ace hardware store to find the Minwax water based stain you mentioned in the comments. I was able to find the clear base stain you had in the video but when I asked for Scarlet Red and True Blue to be mixed in the store crew scratched their heads and told me they couldn’t mix it on their machine. I was wondering if I was missing some detail here that I needed to tell them.
Are those the official names of each of those colors (Scarlet Red and True Blue)? I’d like to go back down to the store with that info. and try again.
Also could I ask where you got your template for your union?
BTW thanks for taking the time to make this video for beginners like me.
Update to my comment: Apparently after researching these colors I found out that Scarlet Red and True Blue are made for Lowe’s.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! It really means a lot. Yes, I did get the stains mixed at Lowe's. I should have mentioned that in the previous comment, but to be honest, I couldn't remember if it was Lowe's or another box store.
As far as the template for the union, I ordered it on Amazon. You can find a ton of them on there, generally pretty inexpensive. Around $10 - $12 bucks. Pretty sure this one was around 14 inches in width.
I would love to see your flag when you get it finished. You can shoot me an email sparetimewoodworker@gmail.com

Great job! My question is,why not glue the boards together before staining? I would be afraid the glue would seep to the edges after all that hard wrk. Just curious that's all.

Thanks! I have always stained the stripes after shaping them. It would be nearly impossible to tape off straight lines especially on a wavy surface.
      Thanks for watching!!

I see you used the table saw to flatten the sides of the boards. Did you think of planning the broad side of the boards for a more flush fit when you glue and screw?
And was there much warping of the boards after you carved them?
Lastly what chainsaw blade did you use?
I also watched the vid and went to get some equipment to make one of these looks awesome

    • @sparetimewoodworker1505
      @sparetimewoodworker1505  4 роки тому

Thanks for the comments. I did think of planing the boards, but after I had them clamped together, they fit together very nicely. One thing I have started doing is ripping the 2 X 4s down a little more. The flag in the video was extremely heavy.
The flag has been together for months now and there has been zero warping.
The chain saw blade I picked up at Harbor Freight. I don't remember the brand, but it was under $20. It was great for hogging off material. I would recommend wearing a face shield and definitely doing it outside. It is a messy process.
I look forward to seeing your finished flag! Please shoot me an email if you need anything along the way.

I used a Dremel with a flexshaft. I used the 106 Dremel bit. You can use just the Dremel, but the flexshaft makes it so much easier.

I used a 4 inch grinder with a chainsaw wheel and various flap sanding wheels.
