    Did you guys see at the end the numbered labels are upside down. That's because I prepped this panel the night before the installation at home. This'll be corrected by putting a new set of stickers over the originals. Details.

    I have a square D QO panel and I installed a whole house surge protector. I’m pretty sure I remember reading that square D wants the surge protector on the closest circuit breaker closest to the main breaker in order to catch any surge as soon as it exits the main breaker. It makes sense to me but I’m just a courageous DIYer that isn’t afraid of working on my electrical system…😂

    • @fiehlsport

    I live in South Jersey and one of my friends bought a house that was a 4 bedroom 3 story house with finished attic and it had a 200 amp service. The odd thing here was it had 5 sub panels! One in the kitchen/dining room, one in the downstairs bedroom, and one more in each bedroom on the other floors! These were those small 6 space Square D panels that you can get at Lowes/Home Depot. Each panel was fed with a 30 amp 2 pole breaker from the main panel. I looked at them and they were fed with the right size cable and the neutrals and grounds weren't bonded so they were actually wired right. It just doesn't make any sense why someone would do all that in a house. My only guess was they had a lot of time and extra money lol.

    Electricity travels the speed of light and so do lightning strikes. The closer the surge protector is to the main breaker, the better protection you have against surge damage for the house. I have also been told it is best to put the highest load circuits closest to the main to avoid overheating the buss bars.

    • @electricianron_New_Jersey
      @electricianron_New_Jersey  2 місяці тому

      That’s nonsense because surges can develop from equipment inside the home as well as outside the home.

    • @drwhoeric
      @drwhoeric 2 місяці тому

      @@electricianron_New_Jersey It's not nonsense as the primary purpose of the surge protector is for protecting from surges from outside the home such as lightning strikes. Surge protectors in load centers do little to protect branch circuit surges. You are correct that some surges occur from within the home. AC motors are notorious for causing surges.

  • @SolidStateWorkshop
    @SolidStateWorkshop 2 місяці тому

    Not sure about the Square D SPD requirement…Whats the resistance of the bus bar from the main breaker to the bottom (or top) of the panel? Maybe 0.5mOhm?
    The SPDs (giant MOVs) are working against the source resistance of everything between the (and including) the secondary of the distribution transformer. Without source resistance, there is no way for the SPD to clamp the voltage. So, in theory, if the resistance of the panel bus is high enough with respect to the service cable and distribution transformer resistance, then it *could* matter to some degree. If the equivalent source resistance is like 5mOhm and the panel bus is 0.5mOhm, then the breaker closet to the service entry might see 10% higher clamped voltage compares to the breaker nearest the SPD. But if source resistance is more like 50mOhm equivalent then 0.5mOhm is practically nothing. Neglecting AC impedance for simplicity
    To me, seems like it most likely does not matter in any appreciable way.

    Surprised the utility company lets you pull the meter and especially cut the service drop as that’s usually theirs and under their control. Also I didn’t see it but I hope the service drop was de-energized as a short there could cause damage to the transformer as well as causing issues to neighbors equipment.
