One thing that almost never gets brought up in regards to the supposed "cause" of the fight is T.Y. Wong's 1961 book on Chinese martial arts, which clearly shows him in photos instructing a white San Francisco police officer by the name of Erle Maddox.
If that San Francisco Chinese martial arts community truly wanted to keep the Chinese martial arts a "secret" from "foreign devils," the last thing that one of the heads of that community would do would be to author a book, in English(!), and to show white students learning kung fu.
James Yimm Lee was involved in that book and yes, he would later become a close friend of Bruce's.

You are Absolutely right my friend! Thank you for exposing the false narrative that has been perpetuated for decades. Many years ago, I had asked both Bruce Lee’s mother, Grace Lee, and Bruce’s older sister, Phoebe Lee, whether they held any animosity towards Master Wong Jack Man for his legendary fight with Bruce. Neither said they did and accepted the reason for the fight as merely a challenge between two great masters.

I am agreeing and with my friend Randy Wong and you about the open challenge from Bruce Lee, and that it was not about Bruce teaching qwailows. As mentioned in the separate comment above, I highly recommend San Francisco journalist and author Charles Russo's book: "Striking Distance: Bruce Lee and the Dawn of Martial Arts in America" and his podcast in which Shannon Lee interviews him about the challenge and match.

Great Video, I wanted to say that you are correct about the story about why the fight took place. I have friends that were taught by Bruce Lee Students. I met people who met Bruce Lee and I can say that you are telling the truth here. However, my issue always been about the fight. The other teachers may have taught whites but it doesn't mean that they taught them any secrets but basic martial arts, defense/offense and found out or had suspicion that Bruce was teaching them then yea I think it would spark up concern in the Chinese community which very well could've been the reason the fight went down. And i think it did happen as fast as the way Linda said it did causing Wong wanting a rematch because of his ego being broken so quickly but Bruce already getting an 'Ok' to keep teaching what he's teaching and who he's teaching it to, he just went forward and didn't look back.

    • @michaelquebec6653
      @michaelquebec6653 5 місяців тому

"Secrets?" If Bruce had any secrets to teach, they were what made a combat sports athlete effective and that's no more "secret" than what you would find in a boxer, a Savate competitor, or a Muay Thai fighter of that time period.
Conditioning, experience, timing, broken rhythm, explosiveness, those sorts of concepts.
You must have seen what happened when masters with "secret" training in China took on Xiu Xiao Dong.
You must have seen that 1954 charity fight between two "masters" (I am sure they had "secret" training, too.)
In case you haven't seen it, here's the kind of "secrets" that they attempted to use on each other, in that match.
      m.ua-cam.com/video/QzS_5tjvki4/v-deo.html
When Chinese martial arts "secrets" are mentioned, it sounds like the plot device in a Shaw Brothers movie. I say that without sarcasm. That's exactly what it reads like, "secret techniques" popularized in martial arts fiction, but when pressure tested, bears little in the way of results.
It actually sounds like the sort of thing that Bruce himself doubted in his writings for Black Belt magazine in the 1960s.
I'm not doubting that Bruce Lee dominated and won against Wong Jack Man, for the same reasons why today's traditional martial arts masters usually get knocked out when they attempt to take on a combat sports athlete.
But the cause of the fight is what is in doubt, in light of evidence, such as photographs of those San Francisco masters teaching white students in the late 1950s and early 1960s, prior to Bruce Lee.
Most people who research are in agreement that the actual cause of the conflict can be traced to The Sun Sing Theater in 1964, during the tour of actress Diana Chang Chun Wen, Bruce's demo during the intermission of the show after serving as her cha-cha dance partner on stage, and an audience member named David Chin.

Even if you are correct than that would be Bruce Lee's deciding factor to break away from traditional martial arts and take from all mastering your own unique self expression of martial combat discarding what's completely useless and ineffective to you. Who cares if Bruce Lee lost a fight or not. What's the point of you and fanboys arguing over a dead man in which you never witnessed yourself on a daily basis. Real fighters fight. They eat breathe and sleep on a daily basis what makes a fighter a fighter. Bruce learned the cause of his ignorance by exploring and adapting to physical combat. Even through defeat he learned from his mistakes studying his movements and his opponents. Bruce sparred alot. He took a scientific approach to not only himself and the world around him but fighting just as well. If he were alive and younger and had a chance to explore fighting as it is today, I'm sure His own personal expression of JKD would have much more to offer than it aspired to in its earlier stages and people like you would still be a side line hater while still being put in shock and awe by a small Chinese man just as the world was when Bruce was still around. You are like the stuntman who tried Bruce over and over telling Bruce you don't know how to fight, you are only an actor. Then things happen so fast and Bruce says, not bad for an "actor huh?" Bet you didn't know Two of Muhammad Ali's bodyguards were students of Bruce Lee. One or both he sparred with. Just like Kickboxer Joe Lewis said... He is just so fast I can't do anything with him. Joe Lewis was a heavyweight kickboxer but started point fighting. Bruce talked him into full contact just as he always advocated anyway. I have heard nothing but great things from especially his students. I think Bruce's true credibility of his fighting ability lies with them since they not only were his students but they even got to witness fights that were not even documented and some that were. This really doesn't matter one way or the other. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas

In few of my documentaries certain people have said no one won that fight, it was a draw , it's true why take on one sided story all these years, it's all coming from Linda, Shannon, and their friends that Bruce beat Wong Jack man.I did felt sympathy for Wong because all these years no one actually interviewed him or tell his side of the story.
