    Ted was known for having some of the loudest live shows back in the 70s, to the point where he was banned from playing outdoor live concerts in Kansas City. I remember having to work during one of the day long Kansas City "SummerJam" (I think) concerts, I was able to hear Ted's set quite clearly at my home from Kaufman Stadium, about 17 miles away. His stage setup was 6 x 180 watt Fender Super Twins & Dual Showman cabinets (2x12" & 2x15".) The vocalist was Dereck St. Holmes, who was with Ted on his first 3 or 4 solo albums, then they split up, but they came back together a number of times over the years, and they really are a great combination when they're able to get along. Derek has a fantastic voice. The band on those first solo albums was really amazing, with Rob Grange on bass and Cliff Davies on drums. BTW, Meatloaf was brought in for some additional lead vocals on Ted's second solo album, "Free for All!"

There was a small place on industrial blvd in Dallas called the electric ballroom, I snuck into when I was 16 ted was just starting and warming up for big bands. That hollow body Birdland guitar threw off some serious distortion/feedback! Love it!

    • @glqm88
      @glqm88 5 років тому +5

      That's why Nugent is the only rock guitarist, I think, to use a Byrdland. That hollow body caused massive feedback at higher volumes and distortion. Somehow, he was able to control and use that feedback. On the plus side, the Byrdland has a very short scale length which makes string bending much easier.

    When I saw Ted Nugent, live and in concert, it was at The University of Michigan's Crisler Arena. When he took the stage, he did so in a loincloth, swinging on a rope from the top of the right side speaker tower. True story.

    Ted started in a group called Amboy Dukes. He was the guitar player, but quickly out grew his band mates. He was never a great singer, so he would bring in others, after he went solo. His ego would eventually overpower the “front man”, of any band. Ted was an animal, on stage. You may remember him, from his Damn Yankees days, in the late 80’s.

    Ted Nugent lives in Waco, TX, which is where I live but he's been hunting here in central Texas for decades. I grew up getting to see him in local concerts all the time. In late 80s early 90s he did all the singing himself but a few years back he reunited with Derek St. Homes who was his original singer on this song and his first several albums as the Ted Nugent band. FunFact On Free For All album in 76, part of that album was recorded with Meatloaf.

    I’ve seen Nugent in concert more times than any other band. I blame the hearing loss in my right ear on Nugent. Back in the 70’s all concert tickets were General Admission, which meant if you had the fortitude to fight (not literally) your way through the crowd, you could experience the concert standing next to the stage...and the speakers. Nugent’s concerts were way louder than anybody else’s concerts, and I have the hearing loss to prove it. When I left a Nugent concert my ears would literally be numb, which is a very strange feeling. Once the numbness wore off the next day, my ears would ring for 3 more days. I was obviously too young and dumb to wear earplugs. 😏

    This sure brings back memories, I was 16 years old when I saw Ted Nugent in 1977 at what was called Superjam rock festival in St Louis ( at Busch Stadium now gone) there were several other bands, REO Speedwagon, Judas Priest, etc. Ted was called the Motor city madman at the time, his stage entrance was riding a Harley motorcycle onto the stage. When he came out 100s of people stood up and cheered through his whole concert, when he played Stranglehold the crowd was insane.

    One of the many things I love about music and specifically GREAT songs is that often the listener can remember where they were and what they were doing when they first heard it along with their reaction. This is very similar to big historical events such as (for people our age Kel n Rich) when the space shuttle Challenger exploded, 9/11 etc...I first heard this song while streaming Pandora in my bedroom doing some cleaning. I literally froze during the guitar solo. I was only half listening as I was cleaning and just had the music playing in the background but the music just grabbed me that much! A few days later I had a similar experience with Iron Maiden's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner".

    One of my first concerts. Uncle Ted was awesome.When done he left his guitar reverberating in front of an amp forever...the place was shaking, Then he came out and did this for an encore... my friends ears were literally bleeding by this point, no joke, blood was streaming down his neck. Awesome show!

    You should do a reaction of some of Ted's live stuff from his Damn Yankees years in the late 80's early 90's. Ted became more of an 80's style shredder while with the Damn Yankees. Tommy Shaw from Styx was also in that band.

    Love Uncle Ted...good man...truth teller. Amazing touch he’s always had. This song was him telling the industry that he’s got them in a stranglehold and there’s nothing they can do about it...the mans in his seventies and looks 50....never touch a drop of alcohol, or any drugs.

      He also claims his family has not bought any meat from a store since '68. I believe him, he is an avid hunter of coarse, and stocks his land in Texas with game and forage for them, culling the herd as he goes! What meat they do not use, he donates to the hungry.

    Derek St.Holmes is the singer. He has been in the band off and on over the 'DECADES'. I have seen Ted 3 times in a small venue here in Boise, Idaho. There is no Stop in him. He ROCKED THE HOUSE! You get the chance you must go and see him.

      Actually he kept having to let bandmembers go because Ted doesn't drink or do rugs and his players kept losing their edge. Live he always gave major kudos to his crew.

    I have probably seen Ted Nugent 20 times. He is 70 years old and still doing concerts. His concerts are still amazing, tough he doesn't jump off amplifiers anymore. But you go to his oncert, you'll have fun.
