Istanbul: Topkapı Palace Walking Tour

Topkapi Palace, meaning "Cannon Gate",
served as the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire and was the main residence of its sultans. The palace complex consists of four main courtyards and many smaller buildings.
We will pass through the Imperial Gate, the main entrance to the First Courtyard, which served as an outer area or park. Then through the Great Gate of Salutation, which leads to the palace and the Second Courtyard or Divan Square. It is surrounded by the former palace hospital, bakery, Janissary quarters, stables, imperial harem, diwan and kitchens. At the end of the courtyard, the Gate of Happiness marks the entrance to the Third Courtyard. It was used as a gathering place for courtiers. The area also has a small 18th-century mosque and the Beshir Agha bathhouse.
The Conqueror's Pavilion, also called the Conqueror's Kiosk, consists of two floors raised to a terrace above the garden, built on top of a promontory on the rock, with a porch overlooking the Sea of ​​Marmara and the Bosphorus. The treasury contains one of the armor of Sultan Mustafa III, his gilded sword, shield and stirrups. The ebony throne of Murad IV can also be found in this room. Other items include several pearl-studded covers of the Koran that belonged to the sultans and mirrors encrusted with precious stones. There is a music box from India with a gold elephant from the 19th century. The most attractive gem in the treasure trove is the Spoonmaker's Diamond, set in silver and surrounded in two rows by 49 cut diamonds.
