The original recording is in the key of A but I have transposed In My Life to the key of G to make it possible to play the melody with the chords in the introduction clearly by one person.
Thank you for your support,
Hal Stead

One the better guitar teachers on UA-cam. May be the best. Pacient. Easy to follow. Clear. Full explanations.
Gallagher I really like your comment. Thanks for your input. Hal
One of my favorite songs in the history of recorded music!
I'm with you Gene. Great song.
I like the Gmajor example , well done thanks !
Thank you, Hal. Very clear instruction. I particularly enjoyed the fact that you made it a bit easier and simpler to play by using the key of G rather than A. For the purists and people who are far more skilled than I am, they can always use a capo up 2 frets or changed all the chords to key of A - they can have their fun with those barred F#m and B chords. Plus the melodic intro is awesome in G. Thank you again. Pat.
You're welcome Pat. Did you see the updated version of this song that I did just recently? Just wondering. Yes, I like the key of G for this song. It makes playing it easier for the singer/performer. Thank you for your support.
You have an absolutely beautiful voice.
Hal! I picked up the guitar because I would watch you play for us at sun hawk and I would just be so amazed. Thanks for the inspiration!
Logan Page Logan! Man it is good to hear from SunHawk people. I'm glad you were inspired. Thanks
Best tutorial... Atleast works for me. Thank u sir!
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment Eduard.
Perfect tutorial my friend. Congratulations👍👍👏👏
Thank you Gabriel. I've been thinking of updating this video to show the chords on screen. What do you think?
Thanks you sir, love this song. Great teacher.
You're welcome Corbin. Thanks for the support. :)
Beautifull really, Thank you Hal!
Hey Ana you are welcome. I was just thinking that maybe I should play the song all the way through...
Thank you so much for the video and PDF. This is perfect for me to learn as my first fingerstyle song. A is far too much falsetto for my voice, and I'll just use the capo to get to the original key for another singer.
Sounds good Dave. and You're welcome. :)
Nice guitar playing and voice sir!👍🏼 Thanks for this tutorial.🙏
You're welcome and thanks Doc... :) Great to have you here.
A bit late... but thank you for such a concise tutorial. BTW you have a beautiful voice.
Never too late to make a comment.:)
Favourite version I’ve found but extremely hard to follow
drillanator Maybe I should do another version that is clearer a little slower and show the chords better?
I’ll put it on my list and do that soon.
Lovely...indeed! .
Lovely right back at you Lesleigh.
¡Muchas gracias! Muy buena versión y lección de esta hermosa canción!
Gracias Cotelin.
Awesome. Thanks Hal! You remind me of Michael Chapman in that hat. 👍
You're welcome Troy. :)
I am new subscriber .i found your teaching very good.showing exactly chords, tempo . thanks.i m curious.if you'r using an electric or plain accoustic cause the interpretation or what we can do with the plain is less creative because of a low sound or the sound can't fit the guitar or sound .hope you got what I mean .thanks again.
Love ur lesson & sweet voice . Thank you :)
Thank you...
I love your tutorial, though I find it hard to follow the picking pattern. Otherwise I adore your voice and the way you are making your videos. :)
Hi Pavlina, I've got this video in my sights for a remake. There are 710 likes and 41 dislikes, but this classic song needs a redo and update to my latest video teaching style. I'm not going to do this with every old video that I've made but this song will get a facelift. Stay tuned! Thanks for the comment! Hal
Thanks, I like to learn from you.You doing good.
Hey Bobby, thanks for the note. :) I'm glad that you're here.
Is there tab available for this lesson?
You are such a really good teacher. Thanks for the guitar lessons.
Could you teach us "Love will find the way" by Yes?
Hello Marthelena, I was thinking about Hold On by Yes. But Love Will Find A Way is a good choice too. Maybe even better for troubled times? Hal
Quail Studios Guitar, let’s do both :)
@@marthelenada6197 LOL! OK. I'll see what I can do. :)
Hi just want to know if you teach Peter White Never knew love like this before
I'll put this on my list of videos to make. But to tell you the truth patrons get first dibs on what I teach. www.patreon.com/quail_studios/ Their suggestions get put to the top of the list.
If you play it in A with the capo on the second fret, what changes to what you did? Thanks for a great tutorial! :)
Not sure I understand the question...? Or is it a question Richard? You're welcome BTW. Thanks for being here. :)
Haha yes I mean you said at the start of the video that it can be played with the capo on the 2nd fret but for the video you’d be teaching it with no capo. Does anything change when the capo is on the 2nd fret compared to the when there’s no capo?
Great rendition! :D
Thank you!
Woooow😎
Great
I also find it a bit clunky in A. i can play it fine but a couple of bits in A inc the Fm barre on an acoustic doesnt seem to flow as well for me. especially if i want to pick notes instead of ring out chords
G is my favorite key.
Not difficult to play in A either. Just more difficult to arrange ;-) Adam Rafferty already did it for you: ua-cam.com/video/R_31xKFzSy4/v-deo.html
What is the difference between a coda and an outro.
ASMRWhisperLight. A coda is an ending of a song. An outro is the intro used at the end, going out, so to speak. These words are sometimes used interchangeably.
I'm picky about what I like to learn in life. I love learning. Same with guitar songs. I've listened to many tutorials, and chose yours, because it is just so damn beautiful! Well done, sir. And you have a very nice, pleasing voice that is well-suited for this song. Thanks a million!
Hi Eddie, thank you for your comment and perspective. It's a great song and fun to play.
Hay qua.
hey maybe also teach us the picking pattern for the entire songs please. It's hard to follow for a beginner like me.
You mean walk you through every picking pattern for the entire song? This isn't a beginner video. I do walk you through the fingerpicking at 7:53. Go check it out!
It's quite hard to learn the right hand. Maybe you can right down the fingers just like the intro. Thanks.
Yes, maybe I should do that. This is a great song. Become a student and I will just for you. :) www.patreon.com/quail_studios
I thought that it was quite clear because of the video at eight minutes. You can't see what I'm doing? Thumb, index, middle+ring+pinky, back to index - then do it over again for the next chord. The thumb plays the bass note always.
It's just for not easy for a beginner like me. I would try my best. Thank you sir.
I will consider writing the tab down for the right hand part during the verse.
Great, but it would have been great to see better the intro slowly...it’s an important part for this song...For the rest, it’s very good
Hi Pierre, I'm in the process of redoing this video because this is such a great song. Watch for it in the next month or so.
It’s just as easy to just play it right.
Do you mean to play it in the same key as the original recording?
Done in "A", not "G"!!!!!! Big difference mate!
HI George, would you like to make a video for us and show us how to play "In My Life" in the key of A with the melody in the introduction? Make it a solo guitar arrangement. Message me when it's done. I'll take a look at it.
Oh by the way, if you want to hear this song in A while playing in G, just put a capo on the 2nd fret.
Thanks, Hal
hahaha singer
Sir, your video is perfect. One thing wrong however. Can’t see what your doing. Watch the video yourself especially at the beginning. I just loved it, especially the chords and finger picking, but didn’t help due to camera. 😢
Good lesson. Nice voices, both yours and the Blueridge. Thanks for sharing.
First, it's John's brainstorm and nobody else. But after he's gone, someone is trying to steal the show. Tho' he's only arrived in 1967.
John's on A, but ok accepted you lowered it G. But in this lines:
Bm Dm
All my li - - - life or yours (wrong)C Cm it should be:
Am Cm
Gwad you made the song sound so beautiful with your unique strumming
Thanks Mikasa!
Hard to see how this could be described as a lesson at first - much too fast for any human to follow. Plus no actual structure to lesson - too random - until things settle down at the 6 minute mark! Boy do i feel dizzy!
Your name is Slowlearner... hmm... OK. At 0:15 I start with the form of the song. 1:24 Then I explain why we are not playing this song in the original key and we talk about a capo to put the song into the original key. 2:33 we do a quick walk through of the song showing you the chords. At 6:17 we talk about the chords more in depth. etc... You will find in the "description" time stamps of the different sections of this video so that you can skip around to the parts you want to learn more quickly. You also have a pause button and can rewind videos if you need to hear a concept again.
At this point in my UA-cam career (July 15, 2015) when I made this video, I was experimenting with making videos faster and not worrying about putting all the chords on the screen.
NOW (2019) I've gone back to making videos more in depth, taking the time to put the chords on the screen and explain and teach better. On a song like this it takes 10 to 20 hours of production time to do this depending on what kind of song it is.
I'm working on The Way You Look Tonight now. Should take quite a bit of time to finish this video. Watch for it in a week or so.
Thanks for watching and the comment.
Hal
I used to feel that way when I took songs up but wasn't willing to put the work in. When I realized that i have to take the video at my own pace, can stop it, take it in, follow in slow motion, etc. then the power is in your hands to own it!
Nice job ,,thanks
Thanks a lot. I've trying to play this song for a long time. Finally i got it. The best lesson i found. Thanks from Brazil.
You're very welcome Marcos! Thanks for your comment.
Good lesson, thank you. My office mate loves The Beatles and I've been telling him some day I'll learn one of their songs, so maybe I'll start with this one.
Brian K Very good choice..
well sir, you have a new subscriber. ruddy good job. great voice you have too.
Thank you Chris. I missed this comment somehow 5 months ago.
Very helpful thanks Colin UK 🇬🇧 👍
You're welcome Colin. ;)
Excellent voice and finger picking!
Thanks Alan. :)
Oh that "Break" is gorgeous.
Hello! I was just thinking about you this morning and wondering how you are doing. It's been a few months since I've heard from you. ;)
My opinion I find this arrangement better than other version. This is how it should be played if your sitting down with your guitar more soothing.
Beautiful! Thank you!
This is very helpful. Thanks!
Gorgeous voice.
It i s so wonderful to pick up the Guitar and have a new way to learn music in an easy manner. My dad used to be this person for me but not having him here anymore doesn't allow me to "pick" his brain. This was exactly what was needed for me as I like this song in the Key of G as well. Thank you so very very much!
you are welcome Carl. :)
Nice
Show guitar! 🎸
Here is the update video on this lesson. I show the guitar quite well there. ua-cam.com/video/JfvK0gs3kc4/v-deo.html
Also my cover where you see the whole guitar. ua-cam.com/video/vNrVHVGdS5c/v-deo.html
Dude….you really nailed this lesson for acoustic players….beautiful arrangement!!!
Thanks Larry. ;)
Outstanding lesson. Thank you very much. I will now follow you. Keep on pickin'! Ron
Thanks Ron. I appreciate your support. Hal
Just perfect! Thank you, so much!!!!
You're welcome Cacito !!
I checked out a few lessons before finding this. You play the intro so much more accurately. wtg
Thank you. I did a redo on this video last January with chords and tabs on the screen. Just thought that I'd let you know just in case you want to check it out. ua-cam.com/video/JfvK0gs3kc4/v-deo.html
Great voice and guitar tone on this song. I was learning it in A but finding it hard to transition smoothly, especially on the intro.
I did an updated lesson on this Richard. Did you see it? ua-cam.com/video/JfvK0gs3kc4/v-deo.html
Quail Studios Guitar Thanks, Hal. Just watched.👍🏻
It’s beautiful. And the chords are easier to play than other videos. I love it 😍 thank u.
So glad you like it Ngan Dang!

This was very helpful! I'm learning this song for a wedding, so I appreciate the clear instructions!
I love this song, it works very well for a wedding. Good luck on that.
Show the chords,not your face
Yes, I'm going to redo this video. This was over 4 years ago and I need to do it right this time. Thanks for the reminder Lawrence. :) Maybe this week.
@Jane O'Leary sorry Jane but this was a year ago and I was nt being rude.i was just trying to say show the chords.the camera was on his face and he was supposed to be showing chords for learners.he even apologised. No harm meant..
@Jane O'Leary OK jane.PLEASE let it go
@Jane O'Leary goodnight
Nice job, thank you!
