I have the same problem I am a big guy with a deep voice. I have to change my voice and be more fun to get dogs engaged. People have laughed at me but never has a dog laughed. I love training dogs and I always like seeing other trainers methods. Thanks Robert you are one of my favorite trainers. Please keep giving us your point of view. You are making a great difference 👍
I pointed out to some shelter people that of it comes to me looking a twit or me not hurting my dog ill take the flack...so don't worry there's others like you...thankfully...Robert is amazing.
I love this! I tell everyone that has a hard time with recall to be as flamboyant as possible. Pretend you're the life of the party and you've just arrived to one. I hear too many people yelling "DOG! COME!" in an angry or frustrated voice.
More owners need to see this. So many owners have good obedience but the dogs drag their ass bored out of their mind. When you open up that possibility of fun and play it’s beautiful.
I agree...at last truth being told...Happy dogs and owners matter..the horse world is full of obedient miserable dogs and riders with medals..life is to enjoy...ne friends and have harmless fun....that owner is so more cool than a lot of machos with severe methods..😊
I actually paused this video and started to work with my Border Collie. We are working towards our first obedience and rally trials this spring. Love this video please make more ☺️
Ha ha me too! My border collie is just starting Rally on the weekend! We are working on more engagement! I also have a shepherd mix and her recall has been getting better over the last few months!
@@1packatak she loved it! And we will keep doing it!! We are working towards a novice competition in the fall and doing some trick titles too! Plus my shepherd is starting tracking in May!
Awe! So happy this owner enlisted your help. With my youngest dog, when I’m serious, he’s serious. When I go into play mode, he becomes the happiest, craziest “Frat Boy”. His favorite play activity is to have me throw his duck. He will bring it back 50 times. At least one of those times, I will chase him once he gets the duck. To see the look in his eyes and the excitement he has doing laps around me being “naughty” makes me laugh so hard!! He’s giant and looks like a galloping Clydesdale.
Annie great dog. "YES!" best word ever. GSDs are deep thinkers in the dog world, can become robotic, quickly. From dull and concerned to tail wagging and smiling. Great job Robert!
I own a gsd who was ran over as a pup and has only one eye... and dog training was the best thing we did. We went for about 18 months (which i know is long but we eneded up doung tricks and advanced training after she graduated from her basic obedient class and got her k9 good citizen) and it def was the best thing we ever did together..she is still a dog and has issues because things surprise her on her blind side but i tell everyone who gets a dog to go to an actual dog trainer because training is for you too. Even now 5 years later we still are learning new tricks 😊 and this was the same style of training we did to keep her engaged 😊
I love that you had a GDS like Annie to show how much engagement and and fun make them learn faster ❤ my Shiba Inu is a bit like Annie when it comes to shutting down with correction and I’ve been working on that for the past two months. By the way; great tip with the belly leash. The recall on long leash and no leash increased exponentially! I’m a member of your online training, I’m getting so much good content from there, thanks Robert.
Thank you so much for everything you've taught me about dog training. My pitbull-GSD is almost 3 years old now. Your videos have helped me tremendously, especially with topics like extinction bursts and being an effective leader. I'm so proud of who my dog has become -- confident, intelligent, obedient, happy and fun-loving. Just like you said, putting in the diligent work up-front makes for a fantastic dog to share your home and life with ❤️
Pitbull-GSD cross as a safe family pet...really? What responsible breeder produces these types of dogs or what sensible person wants to them as a family pet anyway. Good to see that you have taken the time and trouble to train your own dog into what seems to be a well-balanced, obedient companion - anyone in your family or neighbourhood with young children might not share this view though and should not leave their children unattended anywere near them.
This is such a great video. I am not a big guy. Quite the opposite I’m a small woman lol but I have noticed with my Rhodesian ridgeback tone is everything for her. It’s hard for me to maintain that enthusiasm she enjoys tho like it’s exhausting for me so sometimes I have to keep a session like that short. I have noticed this attention to tone the most during “heel”. Total game changer.
Loved your video with a softer dog. Some dogs are really sensitive to corrections and require a different teaching approach. There's no one method fits all. Great video!
Loved the full video on your web site, it is exhausting on the handler but so worth the results. Our energy really affects how the dog feels whilst training. Like how you explained why you wouldn't use your foot underneath on certain dogs, that will really help people. Great video. Thank you.
Thanks Robert! I adopted a sweet lab/shep mix who presents this way. I have never had a dog that acts this way. I am going to have to look up working with a soft dog. This will help tremendously. I knew to go very easy on corrections and try and make it fun engagement, but to actually see what a difference it makes, that is a total game changer! Thank you! Thank you!
This video helped me a lot, have a 15 month old doberman who is super intens in almost everything exept obedience training. After a few session with this type of training is much better already.
Good job Robert , your right about training the dog to there drive and personality. I got two shepherds and when I take them to the dog park they know to focus on me cause I play the whole time with them . They don’t even look at the other dogs
Just tried it and this helped! I have a lab who I do rally with, and it depended a lot on her mood. Which was ofc a bit difficult. I tried tugging with her but she’d just spin out and start doing the zoomies. Afterward I would need to put her up as she’d be too overstimulated and tired to train. This helped get her engaged enough without her spinning out
The dog trainer wars brought me over to this channel out of pure curiosity. I found this video and ive saved it to my favorites to use on my high energy boxer puppy. I have a really hard time making myself fun and he definitely likes to have fun so im going to try this.
Im a short lady, but have the attitude of a big guy, i guess. Short girl syndrome, much?😅 I tend to be more serious when training. My dogs do what i say, but ive noticed my gsd puppy has started "dragging his feet" out of boredom. 😅 Thank you for this! I feel like i would benefit from being more animated as well.
I only ever did play training...but i have been considered a bit of a lunatic most of my life😅 im so relieved watching this..i had that bit right...im a short old bird but despite the appearance okay with big bad gsd...am going to get as a nenber..when i get help...
I seen videos saying that trainers use commands in different language so other people won’t be able to give the same command I only know english and spanish can you show us how to train a dog to only listen my commands and not others?
The owner is scared of her you can read it in his body language. She displays it in her motion, he commands to control her. It’s clear he has a respect for the dog’s capabilities. The fact he doesn’t want to give her a treat by hand shows a lot. She could have been aggressive but he has trained her not to be. She is scared to be a dog. I understand I have broken my dog’s spirit quite a bit, working to get it back. Some people have to learn to be dog people. I am one, at least he is taking the steps to get it right. I hope he does. Much Respect
"You built a German relationship with a German Shepard" LMAO!!! I think this is the one ingredient I'm missing with my Doberman. Well not missing, I think I need to add more of it.
Hi Robert! Have you done a video on keeping contact? If so can you link it for me!? I am wanting to start this with my BMD puppy but am struggling to find anything on it. For example, side stepping and the dog side steps with you. She keeps contact while heeling but not sure how to start teaching this.
So, Annie is a soft dog. What different strategy for a hard working line GSD. I train her in "drive" Then bring it down. I used to compete, with a crazy [brilliant] collie, and 2 GSDs, long long time ago.
At 7.18 mark in the vid a caption pops up which says "keep corrections mild on a soft dog." I would think this could also apply to some dominant headstrong breeds such as in my case an akita, because altho' being a strong breed they can be very sensitive to overly harsh corrections. Indeed in certain areas of training, for the safety of other people and dogs a harsh correction must be administered and this is where an experienced balanced dog trainer knows where to apply the soft or hard approach. Doing what you are showing in this video is how I train my akita, but for an example if my boi suddenly went deaf for a few seconds and decided to totally disregard my instructions and go after one of those other dogs, I would then instantly gim him a harsh "NO" and then a quick jerk on his leash for a correction. I would also keep my training sessions short to keep my boi from losing interest in the sessions but do many, many sessions over a longish period of time. As many of your subsribers will well know 'patience and dedication to longterm training' is the key to having a well behaved dog.
Yeah with dogs like this hunting type of outlets our great, outing where you just let the dog be a dog/also hand signals non verbal commands, but with fun games and engagement, yeah play with dog, most the this comes from owners/trainers that have that type thinking "if I feed this dog it better listen or I will hit with this stick" in return shuts a dog down/and I see many that had the shock collar on act broken too, from the books I read in the lat 70s dog training was fun for the dog, building confidence, rewarding, you your dog our a team, ,the dog should show it wants to please you,,,,,,,,not bulling, spirit breaking, or forced listening
As they say, a dog is man’s best friend. You need to interact with them as a friend and not as a slave master. After all, they want to please us. Training should be something our K9 looks forward to and we use to build that bond.
Interesting. My obedience is lacking, relationship I've recently learned is kind of trash, and I'm getting more and more serious in an effort to force the situation instead of using fun and that's probably a big mistake I'm making.
people shouldn't get a german shepherd and be a couch potato. You can clearly sees that guy have no clue what dog he got or even in good shape to have a german shepherd.
The point is this man wants to learn how to handle/train his dog. If he is is wiling to learn how to do this then his dog will help him to get into shape. I despair when I see hugely overweight or lazy people who own active dog breeds and cannot be bothered to give them the right amount of exercise and training they need. Such people should be banned from owning dogs.
Kudos to the owner of this dog who did realize how this dog is different from his previous one and intends to adjust the way he trains accordingly.
I have the same problem I am a big guy with a deep voice. I have to change my voice and be more fun to get dogs engaged. People have laughed at me but never has a dog laughed. Randalsaul6612 raising your voice is heard as praise or encouragement. Lowering your voice is heard as a telling off. (The same with kids!!!)
I love this! I tell everyone that has a hard time with recall to be as flamboyant as possible. Pretend you're the life of the party and you've just arrived to one. I hear too many people yelling "DOG! COME!" in an angry or frustrated voice.

I'm 37 and I have twice less fun energy than Robert. This dude is amazing!
😆💪🏼
My lightbulb moment. It’s all about the relationship.
I actually paused this video and started to work with my Border Collie. We are working towards our first obedience and rally trials this spring. Love this video please make more ☺️
You got this!

Good luck!! Did rally with my Rottie years back. Just loved it.

Perfect example of Balanced Fun Training! awesome Robert ...Training is Fun for all!

Always!

This was a great lesson. I’m going to use these with my GSD
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you very much!
Ok I’m excited to do this to my GS tomorrow

Thank you, Robert - I definitely need to bring out my fun side in training. Vids like this are great 👍
Seems like it is the movement and upbeat behavior more so than the treats.
Thanks for sharing this lesson. It's helping a lot with Reese's socializing.
Glad it was helpful!
Robert is pretty good with training really good
How can I ever be more fun than the other dogs?
Im a short lady, but have the attitude of a big guy, i guess. Short girl syndrome, much?😅 I tend to be more serious when training. All use this with my American Bull terrier.
I don't know why seeing this teared me up
Enjoyable training
Great session and lesson!
Glad you liked it!
I needed to see this. I realize I'm a little too stiff with my dog. That changes as soon as I get home.
Awesome video
Wonderful.
I only ever did play training...but i have been considered a bit of a lunatic most of my life😅 im so relieved watching this..i had that bit right...im a short old bird but despite the appearance okay with big bad gsd...am going to get as a nenber..when i get help...
Love it. Love your video 👏👏👏
Thank you! 🤗
Love it, thanks
I was just thinking about this yesterday. How can I keep his attention on me instead of distractions.
Thanks for the video!
Perfect!
Thanks Rob I have 2 very different dogs this should help with my big GSD, he is a little soft! Hahaha
Like here, I have a Schwarzwälder hunting dog. Verry ry soft dog. I will that put into my interaction with my dog. Thank you for that video.
Nate Schoemer trains the same way. From experience, this training works. FAST.
Is there any benefit to dropping the treat rather than let the dog take it from your hand?
Do you have a video on increasing drive in fetch?
I seen videos saying that trainers use commands in different language so other people won’t be able to give the same command I only know english and spanish can you show us how to train a dog to only listen my commands and not others?
You can't be afraid to be a bit silly! I find crouching low and high voice gets them going, especially for a come command.
The owner is scared of her you can read it in his body language. She displays it in her motion, he commands to control her. It’s clear he has a respect for the dog’s capabilities. good way from all the hardness to connection. the down is still so fearfull. take a few tipps from the channel "modern malinois" ;)

I have not done a video. It’s very specific. Touch heeling.

Not normally a fan of the WGSL... but I must say this is a VERY nice female.
Robert what treats do you use? they always look substantial instead of these tiny treats I have that my dog has a hard time grabbing.
I use whatever the dog will work for.
this is exactly what I do with my dog
How old is that German Shepard

Can you please demonstrate without food or toys?
Im 6,4 and 175kg i dont have to jump around and make my voice squeaky, my 15 month shepherd plays and obeys with me 'just being me.
thanks for the info
Pour in some charisma and build that bond
Hey not all Germans have a "german relationship" with their dogs ;-)
Grettings from Germany :)
Nicht alle aber viele.😆🇩🇪
