Rickson elects his toughest roll ever

  • The other day at Rickson Academy, a jiu-jitsu student seized the opportunity during an "ask me anything" session to clear up one of the most persistent questions about Rickson's career.
Who had been, in Rickson's own opinion, the toughest guy he had ever trained with? Before answering the question posed by our friend Sergio, Rickson displayed a slight smile, perhaps nostalgic, and said: "I felt the roll was going to be a nightmare from the first instant."
The man elected by Rickson as one of his most memorable opponents may be a surprise. After all, we're talking over 50 years of training, and the name does not belong to a jiu-jitsu teacher. Rather, it's an Olympic champion, record holder and UFC veteran.
"I've had many training sessions and valiant opponents, many guys that I consider tough, of course. But if I have to choose one here from memory, I point to the Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz."
Mark Schultz is an American legend, a champion at the 1982 Olympics (freestyle wrestling, 82kg), who fought in the UFC and whose life became a movie.
The historic roll between Rickson and Schultz took place in 1993, when Rickson was in Utah and visited Brigham Young University, where Schultz was head coach.
"Mark Schultz wasn't familiar with jiu-jitsu techniques, but soon I saw that the roll was going to be a nightmare from the first instant," Rickson said. "It was a really tough roll. I knew he was a guy with a huge heart, very tough. And even when I was able to execute some of my jiu-jitsu moves against him, even so I felt that my life was hanging by a thread. To this day I have lots of respect for him. It was an extremely tough roll, but in the end jiu-jitsu prevailed."
How about you? What did you learn from the toughest roll of your life? Let us know.

oh, I read about this fight in Mark Schultz book!, it's the book behind the movie "Foxcatcher", the book is really good, but sad, because Mark talks about his brother, who was murdered. Mark was coaching in Utah and someone told him if he wanted to fight Rickson, and Mark said, yes I'll fight him, at the moment he was only aware that BJJ "was more or less like judo, and the only thing he knew about judo was to tuck his elbows, as he had done some sparring with the olympic judo team at some point", Mark said he saw some wrestlers laughing in the bleachers, so he was prepared to go and kick some ass, but his head was "foggy from the lack of oxygen to his brain after so many chokes by Rickson!", so he said "I want to learn this", ♥♥♥awesome athletes!

@@rawstrife9762 spot on. Of course “jiu jitsu” prevailed in a timeless bjj session 😂. Striking would have changed things dramatically. A wrestler of a high level only needs to learn very basic bjj skills to keep from getting submitted while still controlling the action on the ground. The thing is, bjj is far superior for a lighter man who has to face an opponent that outweighs and overpowers him, which is what it was truly intended for. This is why bjj tends to prevail when all things are equal, but the intensive training in wrestling usually ensures that physicality between the two is rarely equal

As someone who has made the transition from wrestling to jits, the mentality and really the goal is just different. Wrestling is about scoring points and dominating your opponent on the mat. So you have to be aggressive and constantly attack, move your opponent to create vulnerabilities in their defense. This is why most wrestlers have pretty great cardio. Jits is maybe a bit more passive.
As for the mentality, my first jits practice I rolled with one of the newer blue belts. At a certain point we banged heads pretty hard, hard enough that I saw stars and maybe stumbled a bit. He stopped everything to make sure I was okay and I was so confused. In wrestling, even in practice, he would have made me pay for losing my position.

It's pretty awesome for Rickson to say this about Mark Schultz. If you think about it, both Mark and Rickson trained and competed for years and years before their meeting. Both guys, through the process of training and competition, fought their way to the TOP of their respective disciplines. It only makes sense that when these two grappled, they both felt each others skill, power, technique and pressure. On paper, BOTH were (and some say are) the BEST of their sports. It was proven through the crucible of competition and pressure situations. Over and over. For years. It would have been so awesome to see either one of these guys compete more in Modern MMA. @@Sunyayana True, but when given the fact that both are elite in their respective sport along with the fact that it's been typically stated that it isn't the style of fighting that wins bouts, but rather the individual and their respective skill level, it's still impressive. Couple this with the fact that Mark is world class and it says a lot about what a much smaller man, who isn't near as strong, did against someone of Mark's stature. Obviously under wrestling rules no need to debate… and under MMA rules- a pure bjj guy vs a pure wrestler (so let’s say a Miyao brother vs a gold medalist wrestler at the same weight- it’s either bjj by sub or wrestler by GnP).

@LS-fd6tl good point, but remember more training in Jiu-jitsu for Mark means he wouldn't have held Rickson in that Cradle and would've taken a risk and tried something else on Rickson, which means, it would've presented more openings for Rickson to get a submission on Mark much sooner. You go on the offense trying to put a sub on Rickson he's thinking like 3 or 4 moves ahead. Nobody is like Rickson.

Jiu Jitsu did prevail because in those years before youtube/internet etc. wrestlers had ZERO experience with that type of grappling. I had the great experience of training at one of the first Gracie seminars 3-4 years before UFC 1. I had never seen armbars/ chokes etc and a couple things from that experience. One, the issue of rolling with guys laying willingly on their back was very strange and gave you a false sense of confidence. Two, I figured out wrestling taught me many ways to take a person down, control them and put them on their back but jiu jitsu was based on finding the submission be it choke/ bar etc. It was eye opening. Third, I was amazed that anyone of us 17 people who the Gracies were not aware of our skillsets would be put in our place quick when we would challenge the Gracies on what would happen if certain things were to happen. Rorian would speak to Royce in Portugese and the dumbass would invariably get choked or barred. Props to their moxie and confidence. The early 90’s were littered with NCAA/World and Olympic champions who got tapped as soon as they took the jiu jitsu guy down. Honestly, Shultz would have no ability to submit with no submission training but was a total badass. Would have loved to seen that roll.
