    Johan, thanks for these enormously helpful comparisons. I particularly like the D and the K speakers.
    I request that you perform a similar comparison with Fane speakers. I really like how the Fane "50 watt" speakers sounded with the Laney Supergroup, but had trouble finding information on the various Fane models and their differences.

    They all sound great, I have always liked the sound and tone of JBL speakers, they take me back to seeing live bands at festivals and concerts in the 80/90's where a lot of the bands were using these speakers. I use a small Roland amp for busking and practice and has Roland's own take on JBL style twin stereo chrome cap speakers fitted, they are increadably powerful and clear for such a small amp.

    Thanks Johan, they all sound great. They are crisp and clear sounding speakers. I actually like the "15 k140 sounds in the vid, but they all articulate well and sound like they could cut thru a mix. I think any of these would be a must have for any 70s rock fan. I have been wanting to try JBL D123s in my own rig. Cheers

    Johands, I got JBL D120 F, in A 1968 Fender Twin reverb, and also a 1965 Bassman. They sound amazing, of course. If they ever get messed up, would it be better to repair them, or replace them with different ones? If so which is the best similar ones for these amps?

    I must say you are a man after my own heart with the way you approach these things. And such great mix and cinematic element too! I don't have the gear I once did but I still have a pair of fender badged e120 that have used with different amps I've owned. I actually really enjoyed them with Marshall but tried with orange or120 they showed up odd harmonics from the clipping at lower frequencies and concertina phase inverter. I had k140 in fender showman cab and this cab with my 78 dual input hi watt is probably the rig I miss the most. The k140 gave the hi watt everything it was missing to me as a Marshall fan but with more fender dynamics. My showmans I actually preferred with g12h more than jbl. Alas now they are all gone. Bills to pay ha

    I gave an old twin JBL E120 Anvil case cabinet to my son and he loves it, of course. It weighs a ton with the heavy Anvil case and the two JBLs! I recall buying it used in Memphis for $150, with some removable casters.
    I also have two home made cabs, that I made myself years ago, with one E120 and a piezo tweeter in each. They are more managable for me, but I used them more for PA back in the day. I am thinking of perhaps putting a control for the tweeters in them, so I can alternate them for lead guitar, PA or acoustic guitars, etc.
    JBL only recommended half their power rating when an open back cab is used. 60 versus 120 watts RMS if I recall correctly. They have a great sweet and full clean tone. For lead solos, riffs, and motifs, you might need to roll off the highs either on your lead channel or the guitar tone to tame the shrillness or brilliance.
    Their only drawback IMHO is the weight. The magnet alone on an E120 by itself is 16 lbs.! That I recall clearly, so put the cabinets on casters if you can or need to, ha. I have heard they are expensive to recone or repair, almost the price of a new one back in the day, about $200 each, but I see there are some re-coning videos here on UA-cam for them. If you got the muscle, room, patience, budget, can find them inexpensive, whatever, they are a classic speaker. Starting fresh I would recommend a lighter speaker like Celestion or Eminence, whatever model you prefer. I am impressed by the fat tone of the often overlooked Celestion G12T-100 myself. But, having the remaining two of these E120s that I just retrieved recently, I am going to give them another go around with some of my newer tube heads and combos (as an extension cab) and see how they work out. I can always sell them if I don't dig them, they are too heavy for my gigs, and/or use them as studio monitors, etc. Their clean and fullness are pretty cool.

    • @nealixd.3011

      A lot of folks just don't bother or figure it out to roll back the highs on their amp, or the tone control on their guitars to tame the harshness, brilliance and shrill when you use them for warmer lead guitar tones. It's just a common sense thing that a lot of inexperienced, unknowledgeable, lazy, or newer players don't know or bother to do. JBLs are very full range speakers. One just needs to use them wisely as the capabilities of their amp and guitar tone controls will allow them to do. Multi-channel amps work best for setting your lead tones in advance to a warmer setting IMHO and preference. Turn the treble and maybe the mids back some for warmer lead tones, my friends!

    John this is kind of irrelevant but I know you have a lot of Marshall heads, the jvm compared to an older Marshall let's say in the 70s or even I don't know if you ever played the yjm model or I guess a super lead my question is do you think the jvm is brighter and more treble more shrill tone compared to these other heads, me personally is comparing the jvm to a non modded jcm 800 head or or even Marshall super lead 2000 head, my ears hear the jvm is more thicker sounding not as treble to my ears but then again tone is very subjective, just seeing your thoughts on it, maybe you could compare these heads in a video I love yngwie malmsteen tone thanks just seeing your thoughts on jvm410h

    Just came into two JBL e120's. One is all original in mint condition and the other had the cone and cap replaced(not the silver dust cap) and the cone had a quarter sized cut in it which I repaired. I was wondering if anybody has any opinions of if I should bother re-coning it, and if anyone has a suggestion of what to re-cone it with? Is it possible to still get the silver style dust caps(and how much would that make a difference in sound)?? Thanks guys!

    A college friend of mine - who last I heard was a VP at JBL - claimed (while in college) that JBLs were both efficient and clean, minimizing speaker breakup and allowing the amp's tube saturation to drive the tone. On his recommendation, I put D120-Fs in my Twin Reverb when the stock speakers blew. I didn't like the Twin. It was impossible to get a Clapton/Allman/Bloomfield tone without deafening volume. (The choices for pedals were frighteningly slim back then.) On the plus side, I played with 100 watt full Marshall stacks and had no trouble being heard.

    • @Hallkardia
      @Hallkardia 5 років тому

      Why shouldn't it be possible? At least, if all speakers got the same ohm rating.
      And if you google the power rating for an E120, the result will show you, that the RMS rating is about 150 watt. Also, this speaker is very efficient at 103 dB.
      There are very different kinds of Greenbacks out there, by the way.
      You should read some beginner threads, if you ask those questions. That's not meant as an attack, just a friendly advice.
      And better check the manufacturer's information, than believe anything anyone writes in a forum, including myself here on UA-cam.
      Recently, I read that a JBL D130F was supposed to endure 100 watts, which of course is complete nonsense.

    Could have been JBLs but some groups around this time experimented heavily with aluminium domed British speakers, like Fanes, McKenzies and even Celestion made some models with shiny centres. Then obviously on the other side of the pond we have Altec-Lansing, EV and Cerwin Vega speakers that also impart some high-end 'zing' of their own signature.
    Furthermore there have been some attempts at using twin-cone speakers for electric guitar with varying success. And the magnetic circuit in itself can make a speaker sound quite gnarly with enough gauss in the gap, but then obviously that won't make them 'zing' in quite the same, metalic way.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  8 років тому

      Thanks Jonas! It would be interesting to investigate how much top end the aluminium dome contributes to. I did compare Celestion T1217 and T2115 that basically differs only in the dust cap material. They were not that different. I think the aluminium dustcap helps to dissipate heat and increases power handling from 30 to 35W. Cheers Johan

    A bit of history on theses speakers
    The D120 is originally a hi-fi speaker modified to be used in Fender amps (D120F) and use a paper voice coil.The K and E series were designed to meet the ever increasing need for more power handling capacity and use Aluminium then Kapton instead of paper. It's why the sound is different between them.
    It's a speaker mostly used for clean sound and not really design for distortion. On my opinion, they sound harsh, probably because they are mainly hifi speaker, design to reproduce correctly the highs, where the distortion sound especially bad. Same phenomenon with a Roland JC-120 speakers
    The only way to go would be a EVM 12L, which is something in between the Celestion voice and the Hi-Fi sparkle.
    I would really enjoy a clean comparison with a celestion G65/classic lead/EVM (glassfiber voice coil), a greenback and a V30 (paper voice coil) and a G12T75 (Kapton).
    Cheers and thanks a lot for this (rare) demo !!!

      Interesting - I've always noticed that the techs in studios tend to put the mic closer to the edge of the cone. I've never interfered because I figure it's not my concern - I just get paid to play and it's up to them to get the sound they want. The reason I use E120s is that Jerry Garcia used them. And I think he used them because they did exactly what he wanted, which was to get his sound out of his fingers and guitar primarily, and a little bit of color from the (Twin Reverb) preamp. The McIntosh power amp and E120s were there to simply take what he heard in his head and put through his fingers to a louder volume. That won't work for most guitar sounds, but if that's what you're after, the E120 is the only vintage choice. Beyma has a modern speaker that might be similar, but I haven't tried it yet as I have a few recone kits for the JBLs still.

      thats what i dig the most though, the fact that its such a clean pure sound forces you to be a more precise player because you can hear all the details through a twin with these speakers. people always try and knock jerks guitar playing, but when he was feeling it there is nothing else like hearing someone shred through a pure clean tone.

    which ones are best, the D, K, E, or F? What about the difference in 110, 120, 140, etc? What is best for classic Marshall? What is best for Silver face Fender Twin reverb amps?

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  6 років тому +1

      The D series are most revered. 110 is the 10 inch version, 120 is the 12 inch version. 130 is the 15 inch version, 140 is the bass 15 inch version. They all work well with both Marshall’s and silver faces. I prefer the D120F though

    the d series for me, the E sounds to thin - BUT if u can put/find the paper Voice coil found in the D120f and put in a E series then an E sounds as good or better...but the E series is Way Heavier also, another draw back..the plastic V.C sounds well..like Plastic..edit found in recones and E series.. a 300 watt speaker in a 100 watt amp is not even pushing the cone, hence the thin sound..no warmth..and thats if u keep it on 11 all the time, most people don't...esp at home..30-50 watts is most common..even a fender 5 watt champ ..is used in the studio ... no need for 300 watt crap..unless for the PA to mic up the amps..and they are in perment locations ..cabled to the ceiling

    I know that you put a lot of money and hard work into this and i thank you for that, I really do, but there is always that one thing that bothers me in your videos.The mix.Especially the drums.I know it takes a lot of time to produce a video but if you could improve your mixes that would be awesome.Besides that love your videos.You are one of few that I like when they are talking too.Cheers and keep up the good work!

    • @JohanSegeborn

      Thanks! So how would you like to change the mixes and the drums?

    •  9 років тому

      Hey dude thanks for the reply.
      It's just my taste in mixing.I would do it a little bit more "modern" if I can put it like that.And it seems that the mix is a little bit out of balance.I know you do that so we can hear the thing you are reviewing the most, but I can't help but wonder what would that guitar or bass or speaker sound in a properly mixed and mastered track.And if you could program a more solid drum track, and a little bit less roomy, I think it would improve the overall sound of whatever you are reviewing.Again I say it's just me, my opinion.Based on your subscribers and views it seem you're doing just fine.But I would like a little bit more.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  9 років тому

      I appreciate an honest opinion. I would definitely use more closemiked drum samples if I were tracking for real. The increased high and low end may mask some of the speaker charachteristics as you said. But for the purpose of a balanced mix I totally agree with you. I'm gonna see if I can divide the mixes in instrument showcase sections as well as balanced mix sections. Good feedback! Thanks Cheers Johan

    •  9 років тому

      Thats exactly what I was thinking.A section where the instrument takes over and a balanced mix section.Thanks for being cool and taking feeback, now I respect you even more.You're a really cool dude.Thanks man!

    Great demo, Johan! In case you did not know, the orange frame D120F is actually a K120 in Fender/JBL clothing. The D140F is really meant for bass guitar. I agree that the E120 is the best all around 12"....but it's 10 pounds heavier than a D120F or K120. I use an E120 reconed with my reproduction recone kit. The magnet strength is greater in the E120. 13.5T in the gap vs. 12T for the alnico...and bit more sensitive.

  • @stephenkennedy7743

    Fender do not make any off these speakers anymore or even anything close to them, Beyma make a copy off the e120 with the 4" voice coil and the aluminium dustcap,Beyma is a very professional speaker manufacter off speakers so if your looking a replacement for your JBL's Beyma is your best option, I have Used nothing but JBL's all my life and I have a large colection off them, just can't stop buying them when I see some for sale on Ebay at a good price, I have reconed lots off them too, but there again JBL no longer make recone kits for them you just have to buy copies off recone s for them when they blow which is a pity that JBL no longer support them as a product because you no longer know if you are getting the right tone from a copy recone kit from another supplier out there, so guy's keep buying them as one day they will disappear as guy's do stuiped things like throwing them in the bin when they blow, and just one other thing some guys stupidly put paper dustcaps on them which totally changes the sound , the aluminium dustcaps were put on for a reason an that is to act as a high freq tweeter, the aluminium vibrates and produces at higher frequncy sound than a paper dustcap, so stay clear if you see them with a paper dustcap or you will be buying some expensive recone kits if you want the true D120F JBL sound from them

    Harsh? Bullshit 🙂 Pure sweetness!
    JBL in a fender amp and a tubescreamer is the sweetest meanest rock tone out there.. It's uniqe! People are lookin for "that perfect 70's cutting sound" and buy boutiqe pedals, expensive pickups etc for their v30's.. All this completely in vain! Search for JBL's or Gauss or eqivalent studiospeakers instead and there you have it.. And drop the "nowadays more demanding"nonsense.. The seventies were waay louder and fuzzier and demanding for the speakers than present time.
    Peace 🙂

    FIrst, this was a pretty useless video. The JBL's real reputation is its clean sound which I never heard demonstrated here. I've been using E-110's (2x10's) for over 40 years and that is all I will ever use. They are not harsh. They have a pronounced midrange in the 3-K range because of the aluminum dome. They are actually less bright or "toppy" than most other speakers and they handle a lot of power (100 watts). Even so, I've blown a half dozen of them on four decades with just a 50 watt head (Music Man RD-100), probably because wiring two 8 ohm in parallel gives you a four ohm load and maximum power transfer. That's why you can slam those 25 watt greenbacks with a 100 watt head - they're wired in series...

    B.S. How can you possibly compare any musical instrument with overdrive/distortion on? You can't because it "DISTORTS" the sound. Christ-a-mighty folks.

  • @jenniferwhitewolf3784
    @jenniferwhitewolf3784 5 років тому +1

    Nice to see a comparison, but you CANNOT close mic at an inch from the dome and get a sound that even remotely resembles the actual sound of these at greater than 3 feet distance... as you actual hear an amp. Sad... completely freaking worthless recording of what should have been a wonderful opportunity to hear. Do it over.. put the damn mic someplace across the room please!

      If you needed that much sound with a mike and JBL's then you would be playing in large arena's.How many players are in that predicament! The average gig probably wouldn't need that much sound even without being miked up! Yes not a very "average" musicians players comparison!

    Now this test is pure bullshit first of all if you wanna test speakers then they should be mounted in a 1m x1m square panel so they all have the same acoustic coupling , also tested best in open air outside, then you will hear the difference , what concerns JBL the K series is exactly the same as the E series in sound because they share the same cone and suspension ,the only difference is the weight in magnet , K series is Alnico , E series is Ceramic magnet and weighs a big lot more , but the magnetic field inside is the same , the 12 inchers 120 series sound a litle less deep then the 15 inchers 130 series,the 140 series is a typical basspeaker and originally has not the aluminium dome .hence is not giving that high crispy tone , your so called 'ice 'tone if you want to know the specs of a JBL then you go to the Vintage specification pages of JBL and you will see the specification ! also you must compare original speakers on not reconed items since there is a lot of aftermarket recone sets that are far away from JBL sound .The D series speakers are less powerfull - but still same efficiency - and are mostly suitable for the then 40 watt amps and combos (2 x 6L6 or 2 x EL34).. the later speakers where more suitable for the 80 to 100 watt amps ( 4 x 6L6 or 4 x EL34 ) the ORANGE F series are exactly the same speakers as the standard JBL types no difference at all , unless the orange painted chassis ,I posses even a set of D110F very very rare with orange inside aluminium domes ! but don't dream ! apart from the rarity they just sound exactly the same as the original standard same type JBL's .. A speaker changes behaviour depending of the place he is mounted in : different cab or box= different sound ,the most natural sounding is a horn calculated in size to the lowest freq the speaker can reproduce second best is a transmission line box , depending of the place ,close to a wall , standing on the floor or in a corner or outside in open air will influence the sound ,that's why in the 'old' vintage times speakers where measured on a square multiplex board of 1 meter square to test for the resonance freq. now in time this original resonance freq will change depending circumstances and how hard the speaker has been working in his lifetime ,a speaker that was originally 45 Hz res freq can get lower in time even down to 20Hz and that means it as been working very hard in bass reproduction, hence the complet suspension of the cone is detorierated ,the reason why speakers must be 'broken in' is to get the suspension of the cone a litle bit softer to give your ' fatter' sound I think you better take some serious information af this matter by talking to some real old guys like me ( 72) who have been involved with speakers all their life . Cheers
