  • In this video I'm playing the insanely punchy JBL E110 in a '73 Vibrolux Reverb (2x10). SRV used these speakers in his Super Reverbs (4x10) (he also used the EVM10L). These are extreme speakers that weigh 14 lbs each! I'm using a '73 Fender Stratocaster and a '08 Gibson Les Paul R9. At the end of the video I'm also comparing the JBLs to the original Oxford 10L5s of Vibrolux!

Back in the day, seeing, hearing SRV & DT in small beer joints here in TX with maybe 25 or so people, unforgettable. One memory: he and Tommy put their amps on barstools (yikes). When the band took a break he would sit on the edge of the stage and play solo blues on a 335 (or such), man. They came out, he grinned under his hat with his stubby teeth full knowing he was about to kill us. My buddy bitched at first because of the $2 cover...he promptly apologized. Stevie played legit Hendrix, I asked him if he ever saw Jimi, he said no but his brother had opened for the Experience. Oh, and Stevie told me he had just played a private party for the Stones 2 weeks earlier ... omg, you met the Stones? Long story short, next time I saw him was in an arena (and last). Johan, you sound great, good speakers though didn't sound tonally much like what I remember. Still good though, keep up the great vids.

I use the JBL120e in my deluxe reverb, I also have a THEILE cabinet housing the EVM speaker mentioned.
In use these speakers together, there is no better sound. There’s a reason these speakers when used together create some true magic.
    It’s an indescribable sound.
They are both extremely heavy… but the trade off is worth every drop of sweat.

Great demo Johan. I used JBLs in a Twin Reverb in the 70's doing gigs- they really cut through, but I switched back to the stock Fender speakers which sounded better (more musical?)at higher volumes..and were lighter! The JBLs were great speakers, but I never dug them as a guitar speaker.

I saw SRV at the Rose Arts outdoor festival in CT in '87 or '88. Couldn't believe he came to such a small, unknown venue. I stood about 10 feet away from him for the entire show. His technique was mesmerizing. Amazing guitar player. Funniest thing was they pulled the plug on the music mid-song right at 11:00pm because of a town ordinance. I saw him play two more times before he died. He was a great talent with an unbelievable sound.

You have to see the EV10L’s he stuffed in his Bassman Reisues. He had two of them in his last rig and both amps had the baffle replaced with 1/2”(12.7mm) Baltic Birch plywood. The stock baffle was 1/4”(6.35mm), the blue frame Eminence 10’s are very lightweight. It’s really a sight to behold, along with #1. Those frets are so big, they’re the most prominent thing on the guitar when you see it in person.
These JBL’s were used in the early/mid 80’s in his Supers iirc. Along with massive Twin power and output transformers. Thanks for sharing these fabulous speakers.

I believe he used the JBLs pre-1984, then moved to EVs in all his amps in 1984 when Stevie got his SSS and Cesar Diaz got tired of them blowing (somehow!). I read an interview with Cesar Diaz that said he replaced the stock output transformer in the supers with one from a twin reverb, and replaced the stock OPT with ones from a Bassman. That would be an interesting but difficult & invasive comparison, but I know you've done crazy comparisons like that before :D. Anyways, really great playing, you really nailed that lynrd skynrd sweet home alabama tone! To me, the oxfords had a clearer midrange that would fit better in a mix, but they less of a controlled, powerful sound compared to the JBLs.

I thought SRV primarily used the EVM-10M in his Super Reverb. Like the EVM-12L vs a JBL E-120, the EVM-10 sound a bit less strident than the JBL E-110. If you swap out the metal dust cap with a cloth dust cap, a JBL speaker will sound a bit less harsh. Like many guitar players, I prefer the K series to the E though the E series can really work with a high gain amp quite well.
I preferred the Oxford speakers with that amp. Have you used a pair of Celestion G10-50 in a Vibrolux? Those can sound great in either a Super or Vibrolux Reverb.

nice video again. I would stay with the oxfords or try jensen c10n (old ones are best, jupiter 10LC are very good too) in that amp. I had some 10" and 12" E-series jbls a few years ago, they were from old pa-speakers, and they all sounded terrible and were much too heavy, so I trashed them, didn't even think about selling them. lol

The Oxfords are a little brittle on the attack and boomy in the bass. We used to call that "farty". The E series JBL definitely is SRV sound. Like them better than the D110 searies which seemed sharp and piercing. Not a problem with the JBL D130 which is another speaker SRV used. I used them in 1970, awsome speaker. Good demo Johan, thanks.

E series JBLS are unique as a guitar speaker. They're very revealing as this demo shows, but they're also EXTREMELY powerful sounding across the entire spectrum-the 12" are rated at 300 watts! As a result of that they essentially never compress and always give you 100% of whatever you throw at them. They're particularly sought-after by folks looking for the Jerry tone but there are plenty of uses for them in my opinion. A pair of these in a high-headroom amp is has truly ridiculous low-end response. It sounds incredible with a Muff or Rat style pedal in front-as long as you turn the highs WAY down!

I'm a fan of JBLs and EVM12Ls my brother had JBL 15s in his Dual Showman Reverb Cab, incredible bass sound, Ironic a Fender Guitar amp used for bass. I shouldn't say had , still has 40 years and still going strong. As to the shootout, as much of a JBL fanboy as I am, the Oxfords to me were much more vibey more up to the guitar than the JBLs, they seemed a bit to "civilized" I bet they wpuld be perfect in a vintage bassman or reissue in concert with the Alnicos 2 and 2, I have a feeling it would be a marriage made in heaven, and therefore I shall try it

Always lots of people saying they don't want all that treble and bass, and how "guitar is all about the midrange". I sometimes wonder how many guitarists don't know how their amp's EQ stack works or that you can change its settings with those little knobs. To me, it's always better to start out with a full frequency spectrum to work with, and to use that passive EQ to cut what needs to be cut, rather than have a muddy or honky base tone that you can't brighten up or get more bass out of, because passive amp EQ can only cut frequencies.

I had a JBL e110-8 cab with a Marshall 2204. The JBL's are faster but you have to be careful. Your guitar and amp settings have to be adjusted to the speaker. The JBL's are a superb clean speaker, highly articulate and very good into light overdrive and crunch. It's almost like you don't NEED as much overdrive. Forget the JBL with any high sat pedal, too much "buzz" on the top end.

@@JohanSegeborn I think a lot of people leave the bright switch on, play on their bridge pickup, and then try and compensate with the tone controls to tame them and ruin the sound. It seems counter-intuitive because people complain about "ice-pick" from the aluminum dust caps, but try the treble up around 9 and the bass down around 2-2.5, then dial in the mids to taste. Leave the bright switch off and play on the middle pickup of your Strat. That's the big bold Jerry Garcia sound like on '72 Europe, and I think the pinnacle of his tone. A touch of reverb is magic on JBLs too.

It's weird, Johan. transducers made to be as linear and flat as possible impress people when they're on stage together with high/medium drivers, tho when their function is for relatively narrow band like a guitar hardly they're appreciated. Must be the fact that poor Fender amp tried everything but couldn't even saturate those bad boys , as dynamic as they are. Kudos on the experiment and on those two rare pearls. (Btw ... These speakers you are using have excellent mid and top range clarity, but lack the bouncy bass response you get from vintage jenses

My ear prefers the sweeter more crunchy Rhythm of the oxfords but if if I had a Raw gig with one of my loud Bar bands , with no mics for amps , the jbl's would cut through with more Headroom and would sound awesome even if they don't break up as much. The JBL s probably handle lots of good feedback without blowing as easy

I prefer the EVM12L and EVM12S speakers to these JBLs.

Oxfords for the short clip that you actually a/b them beside the JBL. Video could have been edited much better in my opinion.

The speakers sound great. However, either your recording rig has tinnitus or there's a parastitic oscillation in that amp somewhere.

Thanks Scott, yeah I know. Its extremely irritating. It’s the Strat and cord that picks it up. It was ok with the LP.

Hmmm, I think those are made for driving the HI-mid section in old JBL 4-way PA systems.
Typical setup: 18", 15", 10", horn. Too harsh top-end for guitar in my opinion.
