I watched your video prior to starting the project, and as I went through the instruction manual that came with the opener, I found myself going back to your video and being able to understand exactly what I needed to do. The instruction manual was not always precise when describing a procedure so I would watch your video and say to myself, "Oh, that's what they mean...." Great job!

Good question! This is low-voltage wiring, and is usually 22 gauge, 2-wire solid conductor. Should be easy to find at a local hardware store.
This was excellent I am going to try to install one of this openers in my garage actually two since I have two separate garage doors. You are a natural at showing/teaching, very smooth easy to follow thanks.

Hi Sir, the installation was great! It was very detailed. But there is one thing I want to correct you based on my installation experience. The problem you had in the video was not due to your belt installation, actually you did right at the first time. The only thing you did wrong was you should pull down the emergency handle string, and manually lift up your garage door, and pull it back close to the motor, you will hear a sound like 'click'. Then that is in the right position. Put the emergency handle back to the lock position. Then you can do programming right away. It is much easier than reinstall the belt.

Very good video! I started installing my garage door opener yesterday and got as far as getting the bar attached to the header bracket and installing the metal bar on the ceiling. Definitely trying the bungie trick! I was trying to figure out an easy way to do that in case I did not have a second pair of hands. This is my first garage door opener install.

Another helpful tip. I install garage doors and openers and if you don't have bungee cords you can open the door manually to hold the opener until you can get up and use the hangings to hang the open safely and then once it's hanged you can close the door.

This is the first video that I watched that everything was done correctly some people do some stupid stuff to install the garage door opener and it will not last so you did a very good job on your garage door opener

Thanks for the help. Your video was well done and just detailed enough. The door is working very well. I find it comical that the instructions said time needed was about 2 hours...lol..I spent a solid 5 hours on it and I frequently do fabricating and contractor work.

If you use a LED bulb, make sure they the ones made for garage door openers. Regular LED bulbs can cause interference and may reduce range or make your remotes inoperative. I install garage doors and openers and I know about the problems it creates by using common LED bulbs! All the garage door opener companies have them available at home improvement stores.
@bbaaspencer1 - this is a great point! Another commenter also mentioned this. Look for bulbs that specifically list on the box that they do not interfere with stuff per the fcc (in the US). See my other comment above for a more detailed explanation. Thanks!

Thanks, I replaced my 35 year old broken Stanley opener yesterday. UA-cam videod filled in what was missing from the instruction that came with the new opener.
On the Clopay garage door, the Clopay installation manual stresses not using the bracket that comes with the opener, and say a reinforcement bracket must be used. Their doors are apparently not designed strong enough to take the force of an opener that may be misadjusted, and could subsequently buckle the door.
It most likely wouldn't be a problem as long as the opener is properly adjusted, but if something went wrong it could damage the door, and they'll void any warranty on it.
There should be lift handles on the center of the door that the builder apparently left off in their installation, which may be necessary to operate the door manually in case of a power failure. Barring that, the rope could be left in for that purpose.
The slide lock can have a lock or bolt put on in the unlocked position to keep someone from inadvertently locking the door, since it needs to be left unlocked at all times with a door opener.

Awesome video and very helpful. Im glad I continued to read the part about adjusting the trolly using the garage door opener itself vs taking it all apart because i also installed the trolly and belt on the motor side. Not sure if instructions actually says what end but im headed out now to finish my install....replacing a 30YO+ Craftsman opener that still works fine but cant retro to todays goodies.... 😁
Updated.... After looking at the instructions it looks like Chamberlains pics do suggest close to the motor so this is thier mistake but after the entire install mine did the exact thing so the easier fix was to disconnect the carriage and press and hold that adjustment button until the up arrow is flashing then just manually hit that button until the carriage is near the opposite end. Much easier than tearing it apart like he did.... Easy peasy everything works great!
Also that Bungee cord idea is the only way to go.... 😁

Never needed to remove the belt - just needed to set the travel limits. Also, the excessive torque seen when it hit the bottom would not occur if the manufacturers instructions were follow - immediately after the full Open and Closed limits are set, the Opener will travel closed and open to record the normal load and with that it will set the Over-Torque just a little above that.

When you measured 8” from ceiling to motor bracket, I was following your logic of cutting the steel bracket material 7 3/4” (due to offset of the horizontal angle iron mount). But after you bent the 7 3/4” cut mounting brackets, you undoubtedly shortened the distance between ceiling and motor mount & motor assembly. How much higher was the motor assembly (with angled support mounts) versus vertical mounts? Estimate? And was that your intention? I’m sure there’s an engineering advantage that I must’ve missed. Thank you sir!
This is a great question! I should have been more clear in the video on this point: You should install the brackets at a bit of an angle to form a trapezoid. This will eliminate any potential side-to-side motion of the motor when it is activated, as a trapezoid (or triangle) will resist shear forces much better than a rectangle. You can see at 18:55 of this video how I demonstrate how rigid the install is with the brackets slightly bent. You are absolutely correct that this will shorten up the distance to the ceiling a bit - but it was not enough to make any real difference in the install. Maybe an inch? Over the run of the full length of the top track the change in angle was negligible. Thanks for watching!

Open the garage door by hand and place a 2x4 ont the door to hold up the rail. That should be the exact clearance it needs

I was wondering what the orange tabs on the back panel were and where I could get new ones?
All you had to do was manually lift the garage door up and it would engage the trolley... trolley is installed and adjust near the motor.

@@AmplifyDIY I am at this stage myself and came across this video. I think they missed this step in the manual (after the "close the door to attach arm to outer trolley" step there's nothing about reengaging the outer trolley with the inner trolley before adjusting).
Thank you so much! Had this installed today and it was a nightmare! I called the company 6 times and no one could explain how to wire this thing. I not only had to pay someone to install but then had to call my electrician. I will NEVER have anyone install anything anymore with watching the video myself and then having him do the same. I have an important question that I cannot get an answer to. Does the rail have to be level or should there be an angle? We used the existing brackets from my old opener and there is a slight angle. Should this be changed to be level?
So glad it was helpful! Sorry you had such a terrible experience getting your opener installed by a supposed pro... that's nuts! As for how level the rail needs to be: the more level the better, of course, but it's not all that bad to be off by a few degrees. If it's only off by a bit, I'd leave it. If it's off by, say, 8-10" or more, then that's probably enough to warrant fixing things up a bit. Anyway, I installed mine and it doesn’t have to be installed in the down position because you are going to set the limits.
But you followed their instructions same with me and it says to attach belt up by the motor so I dont get why they say to do it that way when it wont work

having a belt drive in the winter is trash need chain.

Is it OK to use the two existing rails? (I have an old AccessMaster unit in which the receiver/programming has failed with all remotes.)
You can use the existing mount to the ceiling, but replace the track and trolley with the new ones that come with your opener. Good luck!

The video is super nice but your music is killing. If I like to have music I won't be watching you for it. I find it very distracting and it is like listening to a lecture but with loud noises interfering. Music is very personal, and I found it as noise. Just my two cents if the prime objective is to let viewers watch closely on what you are saying. Thank you for spending the time to make the job easy for us.

Why didn't you install the sprocket cover? My unit did not include the cover (among other parts). I would like to see exactly what it looks like. Ordered one that I thought correct but it isn't.
Hi Robert - I have to admit that since I installed this over a year ago, I don't recall if there even was a sprocket cover included with this opener. I'm willing to bet that I didn't receive one either, and just didn't notice. Were you able to get the correct part?
When we bought our house it already had an old chain drive opener. I. Replacing it with a new belt drive. Can I use the existing brackets and sensors that are already there?

I lost the header bracket for the opener that I removed and saved for reinstallation, is that commonly available anywhere? I was going to substitute two pieces of angle iron if I can't locate a replacement, as a workaround.

My opener goes down when you push the up button when setting and up when pushing the down button. When you walk through the sensors it only stops the door when it is going up instead of down its like it set up in reverse. Any ideas how to fix
Hmm... odd. Have you checked to make sure you didn't wire anything backwards?
Sensors can sometimes be confused if they are in direct sunlight - have you tried testing the sensors at night to make sure that is not the issue?
AmplifyDIY tried it after dark and there isn't any sunlight on it it's baffling .
Yeah, super odd. Probably time to contact the help line of the manufacturer.
Sounds like the belt is installed in the wrong orientation. When the motor sprocket turns clockwise it's expecting the door to go in one direction, either up or down. If the belt assembly is installed flipped upside down, it's going to go up when it should go down because the attachment to the trolley is on the opposite side of the belt.
You put led bulbs in the opener that will affect it
Hey there - You bring up a great point!
Some LED bulbs don't have enough internal shielding, and they generate an RF field that can interfere with the radio reception of the garage door opener. In the case of this installation, the LED bulbs we used do not interfere with the opener. When installing your own opener, if you plan to use LED bulbs check them to make sure they won't interfere.
Bulbs with correct shielding should have something like the following on their packaging: "This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1.) This device may not cause harmful interference, and 2.) This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation."
