Not sure if you're paying attention to very much modern crust because there's a lot of really good shit out right now some of it , one would argue is fucking top-tier
It's very filthy sounding apocalyptic crust. It often has a kind of chuggy metallic mid tempo. Very dark, very bleak. It sounds like music that nomadic mutant tribes would make as they roam the barren wastelands after civilization has fallen. Tons of distortion. Often filthy echoy production. Bands that embody the stench core sound are Axegrinder, Extinction of Mankind, Deviated Instinct, Ramlord, Effigy I could go on and on.

It's pretty much the metallic side of the crust scene that was more oriented on the Amebix and Sacrilege style than the Discharge and Extreme Noise Terror one. The main characteristics are thrashy/doom metal riffs, certain doses of atmospere, gargantual growls, occasional d-beats and post-punk inspired sections with clean guitars. Unironically that's the scene where Bolt Thrower came from. And you can hear a lot of similarities like vocals, riffs and muddy atmosphere.
