  • The .338 Winchester magnum, very popular for Alaska and plains animals in Africa. But in the last few years, it seems to have disappeared! I shoot and show some loads and animals that I have taken with it.
    All shooting and reloading done in a safe environment by experienced personnel.
    Caution! Follow all safety guidelines in reloading manuals typically from Hornady or Lyman.

    Hello John, In the 25 years I spent in Alaska. 90% of the time I carried my Sako 338 Win Mag. An old Finnbear model. I took just about everything up there with that gun. I always used Hornady 225 Grain Spire. Unless Brown Bear hunting on the Alaska Peninsula, then I loaded up some Hornady 250 grain Round Nose bullets. Now I'm retired and living in Southwest Virginia and still use that rifle every once in a while for deer. It still had the same scope I put on it back in 1974 when I was in the 10th grade in Anchorage, a 4X Leopold. I do believe if I ever had to get rid of all my guns, that would be the last to go. Stay safe.

      Those older Sakos are great rifles! I used Leo 4X scopes on a few of my rifles over the years. Very reliable scope. Thanks and take care.

    Been loading 338 WM for nearly 40 years and taken many elk, moose, caribou, 1 bear, and many deer. Not ready to change though I do have a 6 PRC and a Lazzeroni Warbird. Never been bothered by recoil. When hunting you never notice it. 338s are Ruger, Browning, and E.R. Shaw. Like them all.

    Great video. I just found .338 Win Mag at my local shop in Wisconsin for $62 and did find it online at a few places in the Precision Hunter for $62 so it looks like it is coming back around again!

    I have my late father's 338 win mag. Was a Remington 1917 that he sent off to have customized. Fortunately, I have gotten into reloading, and we never threw away brass. As of the time of this comment, I've only seen 338 ammo at midway for $100 a box. Used brass is crazy at $1 or more a piece.

    I just picked one up in a savage. I remember 10 plus years ago it was all over the shelves now I can’t find a box of ammo anywhere. I liked 338 caliber so much after I got it I had a chance at a 338 ultra mag and bought it in a rem 700. It’s a shame everyone is so tied up in the latest and greatest they seem to forget what worked for years and years.

      Yeah, 7mmRemM and 300WM is plentiful on the shelves these days, but no .338WM. 338 UltraMag will give the 338 Lapua a run for it's money. Appreciate you watching.

    Before Covid a box of 338 Winmag only cost about $5-10 more than a box of 300 Winmag. Now the 338s can be found at almost $100 a box. Precovid? about $40 a box. Talk about inflation. Winchester, Savage and Mossberg currently make 338 Winmag rifles.

      Well, here in Alaska more hunters are trying to find .338WM ammo than anything else, just not there.
      Cannot mail ammo to Alaska. Gun manufactures may catalog them, but there are very few .338WM rifles on any store shelves. Thanks for watching!

    Hi John, what an awesome calibre and I really like your rifles. From what I can see the 338 is incredibly versitile due to a combination of high power but still in a flat shooting platform. Classic calibre. Cheers Dave 🇺🇸 🇳🇿

    You hit the nail on the head when you described the difference of the felt recoil between the 338 ad the 375.
    Believe that these young hunters are really not into the heavy recoil and power down range provided by the belted magnums. Their mothers or someone on Facebook told them what they liked = 🐑.

    I've had SAKO 85 Brown Bear in .338 Win Mag for five years now. It's absolutely perfect on moose and bear hunts. Yes, the .350 Wehlen can do the trick at ethical distances, but it's unavailable and completely unheard of in my country and I prefer .338 WM over the 9.3 because of the flatter trajectory and a bit more power. For me this rifle in this caliber is a keeper.

    I know a lot of people here in B.C. who shoot 338 WM. and so far ammo is easy to come by. If your 338 WM kicks harder than a 375 HH, you must have a crappy designed stock! I have only shot 2 375 HH rifles, and 4 different 338 WM, and the 338 in my experience has a considerably lighter recoil! I have heard for years that the Winchesters recoil less than other brands, but since I have only shot Winchesters and one Ruger, I can't say for sure, but my Win did kick less than the Ruger.

    • @30-06john
      @30-06john  10 місяців тому +1

      338WM ammo very hard to find here in Alaska, many hunters trying to find it. I have 2 Ruger 338WM rifles, both have thin, hard recoil pads. Although I have talked to a significant amount of people that don't like the recoil. 338WM is more fast sharp recoil as opposed to 375H&H is more of a push. My 375 Ruger, the Ruger Alaskan, is very comfortable to shoot. Thanks for watching!

    • @orr89rocz
      @orr89rocz 4 місяці тому

      Recoil pad makes a big difference. But yeah an HH has more powder and more bullet, the physics dictates it will have more recoil.

    I like the Nosler accubond and the Swift Scirocco II. I can get almost 3100 out of a 200 grain bullet and around 2850 out of the 225 grain and the 250 will be around 2700. I suggest to look at all loading catalogs to find the best loads and find the bullet that groups the best. I like the rifle better than my .300 Win mag because it has less recoil.

      Sounds like nice loads! I have used .338 WM for many years and have taken much game. My normal handload is a 210 Partition going about 2900. Sometimes I use 250 Partitions, at a lower velocity. Thanks for watching!

      It is/was very popular in Alaska, popular for Plains game in Africa too. Yeah, if a cartridge cannot shoot 1 MOA at 1000 yards out of the box, then many shooters aren't interested.

      @@30-06john Ya i bet I think about 95% of all .338 win mag videos are from Alaskan guys. Sometimes I wish I bought a .300 win mag instead since I don't live there and ammo is cheaper and easier to find. But the idea of a grizzly or moose charging made me grab the .338 instead haha

    Unfortunately for the 338, for most ppl, theres nothing the 338 can do that the 300 win mag cant and the 300 remains more versatile and available on shelves at cheaper costs. The 338 seems to be a niche cartridge for alaska around bears and even then, 375 or 458 may be better if you need a lot of gun. But i own a 338 lol
