- The Beatrice Arthur Special was a prime time U.S. television special broadcast on CBS on January 19, 1980. The production centered on Bea Arthur, who was joined by guest stars Rock Hudson, Melba Moore and ventriloquist Wayland Flowers with his puppet Madame in a series of musical numbers and comedy sketches.
Note: The Melba Moore song "Miss Thing" was cut out due to copyright issues.
Dedicated to Bea Arthur, 1922-2009.
Bea endured a lot of rude comments in her life about her speaking voice, accent, looks, and age. She was absolutely gorgeous here and sang to perfection. She was a powerhouse and mega talented.
💯🎯
Oh my word.....no she doesnt, there was nothing wrong with her speaking voice.

I think this shows how one generation can identify with a person on one level, and then be introduced to their career which spans decades and is so much more than what you knew that person to be. I had no Clue Dorothy Zbornack was a national entertainment treasure, and after looking at this video, I won't forget it. Cheers to you Bea! Still inspiring and never forgotten
That is the most form-fitting dress I've ever seen her in and with a slit in her dress. I think she looks great, but she usually was draped in multiple layers in both Maude and Golden Girls.
She had that walk. She put her head up stroll on stage like she owned it. Her height gave her that. Maybe that's why she didn't wear form-fitting gowns. She might have been trying to NOT look so tall.
Bra Arthur is a national treasure. Thank you for uploading.
A true Diva, and that’s a compliment!! Bea was such a classy woman. What a voice!
I really do miss her so much… Growing up on “the Golden girls“ brought me so much joy. Thanks for posting this.
Me as while
Bea Arthur had one heck of a baritone voice.
If Melba could just stay on her notes.
Smoking does that.
I loved her voice.. Especially as Dorothy Zbornak
And a lovely figure too which she always hid! She was really slim. On Golden Girls she looked bulky due to the clothes!!
No Alto
Thank you for sharing the precious treasure of talent.
Who knew Bea had a set of Legs like that 😍
I miss Bea Arthur. She was absolutely the best!
She could literally do anything.
Uhh.. not quite.. have you ever seen "The Star Wars Holiday Special"?
Love the Cher costume, later seen on the Golden Girls!
She looked great in form fitting dresses. The things they put her in on Golden girls was just so bad. That wedding dress. With toilet paper rolls all around the front. She looks fantastic here.
*were just so bad
Bea was my favorite! Thank God for re-runs!
Bea was 49-50 when she started Maude in 1972. Here she is 58... Damn she looks good. Also this is one of two appearances where she actually wheres high heels over 2 inches, the other is when she is doing the Maude episode with the psychologist. Beside that she would always where flats and sandals.
Her voice is in great condition.
*wears high heels *Besides that, she always wore flats and sandals.
THIS WAS 40 years ago EXACTLY WOW I can’t even .... MISS BEA and all the other stars
Thanks for posting this! Stars today are not adored as they were back then! I loved all The Golden Girls!!
Todays stars are so throwaway. Bea and her ilk were the real deal!
Bless you for posting this TRUE gem of classic television, and bless you AGAIN for including the commercials!
I am so happy to see Bee at this Age, she is a delight to see and I've always loved her since of humor may she rest in peace.
*Bea *sense of humor
What a great special i miss them old television specials this is a superb tribute to her it should be released on dvd for her fans .

I kinda of remember Maude, one of Bea Arthur's earliest tv shows ; I'm 49 now. Bea Arthur had this comedic wit facial looks that would just make you laugh. Now days, she's best known for Golden Girls. Oh, and hey, I remember the cold medicine Contact and Dristan and a lot of the other commercials, Minute Rice, Folgers Coffee, Progresso Spaghetti Sauce and Top Choice dog food :) Thanks for playing this with the commercials. Going by the Honda commercial, this was taped in 1980? And Lionel Richie was still with the Commodores. Memories. :)
We still love you, Bea. Good night.
My gosh, what a fun blast from the past. I somehow missed this when I was 13. So happy its here to enjoy.
Great performance of Ain't Nobody's Business by Bea Arthur and Melba Moore.
How cheerful and happy! Nothing like that on TV these days! Such class and talent!
Every outfit was gorgeous.
Thank you for sharing this special!
This is fabulous. Thank you!!
First time I’ve seen this; somehow I missed it when it first aired, back before electricity. In spite of her considerable stage experience, Bea wasn’t the typical ‘70’s-‘80’s prime-time-musical-special TV star--in an era that boasted long-running shows with the likes of Carol Burnett, Sonny & Cher and Dean Martin. The material here gives it the old college try and has its hits and misses…..but is definitely worth a watch; (with the hindsight we have in 2023, a look at Maude and Commissioner McMillan revisiting their honeymoon suite is too good to miss.) Thanks for posting it😊!
Groovy!❤
Fantastic! Thanks for posting this gem.
Bea Arthur was a immensely talented and beautiful woman and judging from this video she had legs for days
I needed this! Super good .
The commercials were so much better then!!
The church segment was the best in the whole special. :D
That opening jingle is so damn catchy! I watched it over and over. Too bad Bea never did any other variety specials.
Yt Yt The opening “jingle” was actually the second act opener of I LOVE MYWIFE, a Broadway hit directed by her then-husband Gene Saks.
I WAS 14 DAYS OLD OMG TIME FLYS
I loved to watch BEA ARTHUR In Golden girls and MY FIRST LOVE
Anything Bea 🥰🥰, that voice 🥰 had she done some Mexican Rancheras and bolero music with that voice, she'd of knocked them all out 🥰 RIP and thx for the laughs ⚘️⚘️
How has this been 42 years? 1980 was 39 years ago like yesterday...
I was SO excited to see Conrad Bain in this!!! He and Bea were hilarious together on Maude!
This is wonderful. Probably the gayest thing that had ever been shown on TV in 1980. I love the commercials too.
The commercial were gay too! Meredith Baxter Birney later came out as lesbian

I don't remember this, i wasn't really into tv when I was in my early 20's, unless the volume was down, and the radio was on. She looks great, her skin glows. Was she ever a model?
Wow!! She is actually wearing high heels in that opening number!! Better than those flat shoes she wore on "The Golden Girls"
Bea, really Buzzed wherever her life took her!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
OMG. I’ve never seen this. Love it. She could have rocked a couple of these.
I miss her so much
I just. Love her. She was so much like my. Sister in height. And sharp wit. And. Dorathy too. I miss all the Golden. Girls. What. Precious. Ladies.
This is required viewing.

Hard to believe Bea Arthur would have been 100 if she was alive in 2022.
betty white made it to 100.
@@stumack9755 99...
I wonder if CBS wanted to have her star in her own variety show. She allegedly always wanted to be a singer even while on Golden Girls and she finally triumphed on her own show on Broadway.
I absolutely love this!!!
Maudie is here :)
Who ever wasn't old enough then these were sketches like on Carol burnett
Love Bea
thanks for this loved it!
AMAZING
Love Bea.
Thanks for this! I remember seeing this in 1980 or so when I was 16……Made me realize I am gay..
I always had a crush on Bea's son Mathew Saks. He was so very cute and still is.
Jason Gibson i have a crush on beq
Loved Her
love this
Lmao I swear the majority of the comments are people over 30 remembering this from there generation and childhood , while I'm here like yeh bitch new fan here and making this my childhood even though it's very odd for someone who is a teen and is seeing this as her childhood when it could be my mothers childhood instead but I don't care me
Michelle Hoppins
ud have to be 50 to remember this lol
30? 30s young. Get outta here!
*their generation
Not a straight man in the house. :D
Classic ❤❤❤❤❤
I would like to find the video of her one woman show!!
Awesome!!!
This special was actually taped at ABC TV in Hollywood, not CBS Television City.
I think these variety shows weren’t filmed with a live audience. The laughter is canned. The applause sound was always grating!
I love bea but feel sad about rock RIP legends thanks for everything
i love you mama dorothy zabrnak
9:32 “If he dies, he dies.”
Wayland & Madame,
Rock in his final swan song years .
Bea singing in sequence with a bullfrog range.
The gay eighties was just beginning.
Jack Li Do you have the original footage?
What A CLEVER COMMERCIAL ABOUT CUTTING BACK ON OUR FOOD COMSUMPTION🌹👍👍👍
🎵LOSING WEIGHT🌹🎶
29:08 In which 4 colors of the 1977 CBS IDs?
34:20 skit is interesting when you look at from the perspective them being gay.
Interesting
She was not.
*The skit is interesting when you look at it from the perspective of them being gay.
4:35, is that supposed to be bea as Dolly Parton :)?
2:09 I see this moment and think, look at Hollywood, being inclusive! In 1980! 😂
This whole special is so campy and gay, with gay Rock Hudson and gay Wayland Flowers.
❤️🇱🇨!!!
🙂
i didnt get the Bea and Rock Hudson skit.
No passion anymore just parents not a couple
love bea, but isnt this show a smidge insane?
1980 wow..people would have pegged Hudson in a second today..please the man was as gay as pink ribbons.
She did not.
I really dont like her singing voice, i cant believe that she make a living out of singing, she is an excellent actress way back when still living. 😮
Music was great. The sketches were awful
That is funny. When Harry was live, it turns out he was a Bi - sexual.
*alive
I never saw the draw of Bea- Her timing is excellent on Golden girls but I just don't see it.
Truly the worst thing I have ever seen.
Why did they give her a special? This is not good.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. This is a complete train wreck.
Never liked her, what a man!
Like all specials there is an attempt to attract as wide an audience as possible. The Madame puppet gives Bea a chance at acerbic humor and Rock Hudson is a lot of fun. If you pegged his sexuality, well then you connected with him. As far as performing, he was in the national tour of ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY and got great reviews. He would still be a star today.
Awful! Rock Hudson was NOT a singer!
What a waste of man.
She passed from Lung Cancer. 🫁 I had no idea.
heavy chain smoker. Hence the deep voice.
Who was the choreographer? This is great
markie polo Kevin Carlisle was listed in the credits
