I’m always amazed at the patience you have to actually finish a bike completely, ride it, and then edit the video. I would have made 2 separate vlogs about the gravel king not fitting hahah Looks amazing!
As a service manager of a bike shop in the 80's and 90's I can really relate and appreciate your work. I tell ya, the audio and video editing is almost soothing to my eyes and ears. Another great video. Thank you!
Fantastic paint job, and I'm glad to see the use (re-use?) of the Sram X9/5 components. Too often these builds just get a catalog of newest/latest/greatest thrown at them.
Your videos are inspiring...just finished a rebuild on my 80's Diamond Back Ascent EX and used Moloko bars, and my late 90's Stumpjumper (new XT components) with Jones 2.5 Loop bars...Thanks.
I really enjoyed the build! I have a suggestion, I would reccomend hitting your paint with a bit of wet dry sand paper (600-800 grit) before clear coating, and then hit your first layer of clear with 1000 grit. Then your last layer of matte will look more solid and the decals will appear sunken in the finish like a factory paint job!
Problem is they look rubbish with rim brakes after a few wet rides. That's why most tyres ended up being produced in black. (Not such a problem with discs, obvs.)
I put the Moloko bars on my Nashbar gravel grinder as well. They are a little heavy but as Old Shovel says, they provide a nice controlled ride and lots of hand positions.
I appreciate the fact that you left the part where you had to change the tires. These are the things we all run into, even experienced bike builders like you!
This build is sick! I'm in the middle of restoring my 1969 Raleigh Super Course TT, I'm proud to be using Spray.Bike, Park Tool, and Jenson USA for parts!
Hmmmm I kept on thinking P51 Mustang .... love you leave in the bits that don’t work and show what does ... tyre rubbing on a fresheey... all been there ! 😎
one of your most ambitious paint jobs yet and it came out spectacularly! Also the handlebars were a bold and creative choice that so paid off to make this one of my favorite's yet. Keep doing your thing. I love it!
@@chrisallen9154 no I thought it was all amazing, slight misunderstanding there. Perhaps I should have said "as well as". Good job we didn't have a punch up over that eh?
5 minutes into the video and I knew this bike was going to be amazing. Probably my favorite one I've seen you redo. Really inspiring to get my act together and refinish an old BMX bike I have sitting in the basement.
Wow! Incredible detail on this one! I also admire your integrity in the video. I thought you were going to have a chain line issue when you first installed the ring on the spider. Now we all know! Wow again! Just another awesome video!
I was watching you put on the chainring and said "nope, not gonna work with the chainline". Of course, a few minutes later you figured out the same thing. Been there.
So I have watched two of your videos now; one ride and one build, and if the rest are similar, I may have found a new addiction. So relaxing o watch the work without all of the over-explaining and feeling the need to impress by throwing out ALL of the spec details. I get it that may be necessary, at times, but man, I like to just see the work and guess about where you are going next!
Wow it looks great! I can't imagine the mental gymnastics you needed to go through to figure out the masking scheme! The only missing thing is the 'triple triangle' ;-)
Theses are pretty cool to watch. I'm inspired to do something with my 99 Gary Fisher wahoo. It's been sitting in my garage with no wheels for over 15 years. And by the way I've seen quite a few situations in your videos where a 3/8th cordless impact would serve you well.
the best paintjob you've done so far! i've got a bike that is the same but with a 1 inch threaded fork, i bought a 1 inch threadless headset and a stem adapter, but the fork is too short, think i have to buy a new one for the full convertion. You had motiveted me to search a metod to do it, thanks a lot!
Literally been thinking of doing the same sort of thing, got a hybrid I've turned into a drop bar gravel bike but it's never felt quite right. I think some of those surly bars might just be what it needs. Great video as always!
Great job as usual. DOnt like the color pallette you used this time, but cannot imagine a better person to perform such a wonderfull canvas spray painting. Again, so great work
Awesome. I’m currently building a gravel bike from a mountain bike frame. I ride road and mtb and I’ve gone more in the drop bars/road groupset as it’s gonna be used as my winter bike as well. Mine is a 26er converted to 650b. Great build btw, you’ve got yourself a new sub 👍
Give old things new life is right! You do great work, nice bike
This guy is an artist. The paint job as a wwii fighter plane colors is outstanding. Totally blown away. Great build.
Don' t look the paint too close...

Lol. I think we do a lot of the same stuff, you vlog and I do asmr… I need to learn how to vlog
Nice build! But a GT without the triple triangle?? It does not compute.
I wish I knew where to start when it comes to filming and editing. I’ve done so many builds and haven’t been able to document them.
@@oldshovel You two need to collab!

As an Air Force veteran, gravel rider, and fan of this channel this is probably my favorite build!! this paint is incredible
Awesome 🙌. Also thank you for your service.
@@oldshovel I think you ticked all the boxes there! Fantastic build BTW.
Needs "remove before ride" tags on the handlebars :D
NICE green!
The paint job on this project. Just *chefs kiss* perfect

Your masking skills are matchless! My jaw drops with each unveiling.
Your skill and ability to turn these bikes into works of art just keeps getting more incredible! What a thing of beauty!
Your creativity and craftsmanship are very useful to the world and people who ride and love to recall the childhood

I'm afraid that this is more than a DIY job, but that makes it doubly worth watching. The paintwork is absurdly good.
So good. I was bummed when the first set of tires didn’t fit, but I was thrilled to see the tan walls go on. It’s perfect.
Problem is they look rubbish with rim brakes after a few wet rides. That's why most tyres ended up being produced in black. (Not such a problem with discs, obvs.)
That paint job is absolutely bananas!
Although I'm not really into gravel bikes this is one if my absolute favorite builds that you've done. That paintjob is incredible!!
It's a old school ATB. Don't get caught up in the hype.
Thanks
@@bigtrucklittlerv7969 did you mean MTB?
@@allenncrystalking8517 Nope. They were called ATB's before MTB's
Is there a frame material that's best to use when picking a frame? I have a carbon frame that's dying to be built!
Gnarly for sure! Another gem, this one truly is a masterpiece! You never cease to amaze with your creativity. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks my friend
that bike has amazingly versatile geometry
One of the most complex paint jobs to date I think. Love it, keep up the great work Old Shovel 😎
Thanks
Wow Old Shovel your craftsmanship is amazing 👏
Thanks
13:49 that moment we love... 😅
Great build, my friend!
The bar has inched ever higher, your bikes are art work.😍
The paint job is incredible.
paint job is out of this world, OG making OG things.

Awesome paint scheme, great build
Thanks
Sooooo many layers and masks, and paints and more layers.
In the end it became awesome 👌 fine Master piece and attention to details.
Never miss any of ur bike restoration videos
YT algorithm led me to you. I really like the way you produce your videos and your general way of doing things. Big thumbs up.
PERFECT build ...can't get any better ! Well done Oldshovel !!! Great job !

Just the info I have been looking for. I am upgrading/updating my old GT RTS and this video helps a lot.
That paint job is amazing!
Thanks
Magnifique, une de tes plus belle réalisations

This paint job goes so far beyond just giving an old thing new life. Professional paint shops would be hard pressed to do better. So impressive.
Inspiration for a old road bike that I have in my garage … thank you

What an amazing paint job! This old new bike looks great!
I'm not usually a big fan of the moloko bars, but with the backsweep and red grips they look like jet wings which is perfect for this build.
Love my Moloko's. Such a great alternative to drop bars.
I just love the satisfying clacks and twangs of cables being cut.
Great build great colour. Another triumph of a build
Everything about this is great, from the bike to video production.

Wow...........great rebuild/restore. Congrats with another spectacular job you completed !!
You're a beast with that paint job. A master of his craft.
The Paintjob and the Decals are pretty awesome! 👌
Awesome paint job! I have a “Dad bike” that needs a similar re-work.
Outstanding! That moloko handlebar looks terrific.
Great finish. I look forward to seeing your 2022 projects.
Great job! Molokos were my gravel conversion bar of choice until they came out with the Corner Bar recently. The paint job was meticulously stellar!
Love the paint, but I love the Moloko bars more. I just added a Moloko to my bike, and oh yeah!!
Insane amount if work on the paint job, but it turned out fantastic. Another great restore. Keep 'em coming.
I was watching you put on the chainring and said "nope, not gonna work with the chainline". Of course, a few minutes later you figured out the same thing. Been there.
I suspected it could be an issue but it looked so clean on the outside I wanted to give it a try.

I just got a Tachyon4 for $29 at Goodwill. It’s in mint condition. After I get tired of the stock ride I’ll do something like you did to yours.
