Pigment info is always helpful, in my opinion. 😊 For anyone curious, the Permanent Red Light is PR168, Quinacridone Red is PR209, Primary Yellow is PY97, Green Gold is PY129, Prussian Blue is PB27, and Carbon Black is PBK7. Surprised to see a black and a non-lightfast blue in a six color set. I do like the addition of Green Gold. Winsor and Newton's Green Gold is one of my favourites.
I agree with you about the Prussian blue And the carbon Black! I believe because Jenna does mainly print work it’s not a big deal…. She doesn’t often sell pieces from what I know.
@@AshB_Watercolors Yes, I think you're right. I feel like she should have mentioned the blue wasn't lightfast, because not everyone does print work like she does.
Prussian Blue is light-fast, but has some unique behavior. According to handprint many commercial Prussian blues faded up to 2% after a few weeks but then remained stable. And actually after being out of the sun, it regains it's original mass tone.
It also has the same issues when mixed with white pigments.
Whether those caveats are an issue for you or not is probably a personal choice. Also it's not clear if the Prussian blue used in Maimeri exhibits that behavior or not. The best thing to do is to do your own light fastness tests.
@@skrewler I am a huge fan of the Handprint site. Kim Crick is another good resource. :) Some pb27s fade 2% but others fade much more than that. Some will regain their colour when put in a shady spot, but I would rather use paints for my art that don't require said art to be put in a drawer now and then. It is important to do your own lightfast tests though, I agree.
Which blue would you recommend to be lightfast from this line?
I won your watercolor set from your birthday, thank you so so much!
Lucky you!!!! 🎨
I just purchased the set. Thank you for doing this video. I'm so excited to get my first set of high quality watercolors. I have been so inspired by you and your journey. Saving up to take your new course. I'm definitely in the obsessed phase! Thanks Jenna for feeding my obsession💖
I have this set and also the other five-tube introductory set. Green gold is the only overlapping color. So it must be everyone’s favorite I guess. I have not used them too much. But for a few I left on my palette to dry, it’s unbelievable how easy they can be reactivated by a damp brush, almost like they were freshly out of the tube. Also, the colors are very pure and transparent. I almost feel they are breathing. I’m impressed. I think I’ll get more colors in the future. Back to the color selection of this set, I think it’s meant for beginners who have less concerns over lightfastness and need easy mixes going, especially the dark tones which are always challenging for beginners. That’s probably why a black is included. Also, I believe price was another consideration. For under $40 for six 12ml professional tubes, I think the pigment selection is reasonable. It is to get someone started. For professionals who sell their original artwork and need super lightfast paints, I doubt many would buy their colors in sets anyway. Just my two cents. The bottom line is, these colors are pure, transparent, and beautiful.
Jenna turned me onto MaimeriBlu and I absolutely love the quality. MaimeriBlu, Daniel Smith, WInsor Newton and Schmincke are some of the paints on my palette….. dabbling with some da Vinci paints thanks too Denise!! Wonderful so far!
I'm seeing lots of comments about the LF of Prussian Blue PB27. I just did a looksy on Google. It seems, for one, it depends on the quality of said pigment used by the maker. Maimeri Blu is known to have very high standards, (or Jenna wouldn't be recommending it, right?) So I would think their version of it would be very stable. I also saw a page cited from a Google search of an article about Prussian Blue from the National Gallery in London. A line from that (very long...I didn't read it) article is quoted: "The modern pigment is lightfast, except when mixed with an abundance of white." So I guess it's an individual choice and always a good idea to do your own LF tests & research. I also see that virtually all the other top brands have Prussian Blue in their color lineup.
Great idea! I was going to do a lightfastness test on the colors in my palette… I will do one on the Prussian Blue I have. I bought it before I knew about the issues. Then I never really touched it…. But it’s beautiful. I have seen Denise from in liquid color do her own tests on it…. Ans it still faded. I think it was her.
@@AshB_Watercolors Kim Crick has tested many brands of Prussian Blue and none of them are lightfast.
Most brands say that their Prussian blue is lightfast although it’s fugitive because it loses it’s color in sunlight and recovers in shady condition. However, the extent of how much it recovers varied. Most people consider it to be fugitive because if you hang your picture on the wall, it will fade just like a fugitve color. About your article, it think they were talking about oil or acrylic paint since watercolor is usually diluted, not added white when it’s tested for lightfastness. If you want to know more about pigment, check out Denise Soden and Kimcrick channels.
I love how artists really care about their supplies and the history of pigments! Prussian Blue is a lovely colour, although I guess I’m more of an ultramarine gal. That’s why art is such a unique space 🎨 where I can nerd out with fellow colour lovers!
I bought this set from MC art supplies and it also came with watercolor paper and Princeton aqua elite brush!! Which is now my new favorite! Great deal
Im so glad you did this video, I just got this set yesterday!! Thank you for all your inspiration.
Your favorite way to make purple is with a pink and blue instead of a red and blue? Anyone with even the simplest idea of how color mixing works knows pinks mix brighter more vibrant colors than reds do. Fun fact, you can make a red using quin magenta and yellow like cad yellow or primary yellow. It cancels out the pinks and makes it more red but if you add too much yellow it will make it orange but if you have a limited palette, you can make a red color using those two together!
I love working with this delicious set. I also REALLY love Green Gold too!! Thanks for this wonderful set Jenna!!
Congratulations on your collaboration! 😊 Very pretty set.
Wish I could get into this set but a black and a non-lightfast blue is too much I wouldn’t use out of the six colors :/ Love the other colors though. I like that they use the single green gold pigment unlike many other brands.
The blue is lightfast. It has the same lightfast rating as the other colors in the set (3 stars).
@@davester1432 Prussian blue is never lightfast. PB27 changes when exposed to light but a lot of brands lie about its lightfastness
I would also never use the black.
I use the black all the time. Else I’d be foolish to buy paints that are a mix of black and something else or waste paint mixing for a black. But then, I’m not just painting flowers….
People are so weird about only mixing blacks and not just using a black pigment.
Do you only use Cyan, Magenta, or Yellow pigments? (yes, some people do.. but most have 20+ colors on their palette). Even though with a split primary palette you can mix pretty much anything. Add some high chroma secondaries and there's really not much you can't mix.
I commonly use black for monochrome studies, value studies, or to knock down colors.
/end rant
that being said it is a little odd that they didn't include a green since she does a lot of botanicals
I love the how creamy they are!
i always love buying sets, especially those with unique color palettes and color stories. Prussian blue is my favorite blue, and after watching Chromaphile's video on mixing with black I am especially excited to try out the carbon black in your set!
Strange color choices for sure. I wouldnt use the black or prussion blue, but the other colors seem ok. On my device the reds looked identical. 🤔 I think daniel smiths 6 set of warm and cool primaries would be much better for what i paint.
On my paper the reds are almost identical
I love doing value studies before I paint, so I think that carbon black would be just perfect! It’s so fun to study a scene by understanding its values with a dark hue like black or grey. This technique Helps me use colours 👌
I just got them today in the mail. Can’t wait to start painting!
I finally ordered your set, and I am so excited to receive it!
Nice set! I wanna try it 😊
I have had this paint for just shy of 2 months. I really like the soft texture of MaimeriBlu. The Quin red mixed with green gold makes the most beautiful peachy tones! I rarely use black and I don't seem to be reaching for Prussian, although beautiful. The paint is high quality and the tubes are large 12ml, I think it is worth buying. (I paid $30.99USD)
Oooo love the sound of that peach 🍑
You have inspired me to beef up my watercolor game and splurge a little on better paints! Thank you so much for these super informative videos, as a total beginner, they have helped tremendously. I enjoy painting more architecture and urban areas, rather that florals, etc. Can you also do a video on what colors to buy for more of the earthly tones of landscapes, buildings, houses, and cityscapes please? Thank you, Jenna!
Received my set for my birthday …can’t wait to finish my collection
I purchased this set for my birthday and I’m anxious to swatch, mix and experience.
Hi Jenna I had bought the dragons blood of the Mary Blu and I wish I had not bought that color. I do love the primary Yellow and the Blue they are beautiful colors and will last a long time. So now I need to get a primary red so I can mix these. 😊 Thank you for the video. I didn't know they had green gold. I love the Daniel Smith green gold. Have a great day 😊.
Pretty packaging 👌 💝
WOW, you got your own Water Colors.
Thank you
Beautiful! Wish I can paint. Totally trying to get started 😊
Go for it! I am 78 yo, and have been learning for 2 years. The best thing that I've done for myself!
I love just playing with the watercolors on my day off. I’m not a professional and don’t care what it looks like. I’m proud of myself for doing it and using it to keep my stress down. You can do it! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I'm going to order❤
what a lovely selection, I only recently got green gold and absolutely love the shade ❤
What do you use green gold for? ( I recently read that now it is acceptable grammar to end a sentence with a preposition, lol ). I have it in several sets, but have found no use for it. But I am not all that experienced.
@@sherryfurr9115 I love how bright it is, perfect for landscapes if you like them less muted and more out there. Sometimes I mix with pink or purple for skin tones too. I find it’s a good contrast shade that can make a painting pop since it generally stands out against my pink/purple/blue themes. It’s a very different shade though and took me a bit of getting used to 🥰
For those who are looking the Blick page did not list the sizes but by expanding one of the pics it says there are six 12 ml tubes.
Hullo Jenna, I am not a fan of having Black of any sort on my water color palette! I have relented and put neutral Tint from DaVinci Paints since using it from Denise Soden's Wildlife palette. She has removed it and replaced it with her new color Denise's Gray, another especially curated color she as done with the chemists at DaVinci! If I am only going to get 6 colors I go with split primaries. Perhaps you would like to explain your choices in a bit more detail? or Why you left off when only picking 6? or Not! This is after all your channel and your new paint collection! Best of luck and I do hope it brings you and others happy times while painting!
Very nice ! Sold out on Amazon but I’ll probably get your set. Been looking to try that brand for a while now. Glad to see you included a Black. (That tells me you’re an artist & not a fad follower.) Congrats & cheers!
I personally wouldn’t use either one of the reds is a neon pink. I gotta have my opera pink/rose or my Opus pink 💗
🇮🇹 Here in Italy they have cheap price and fortunately we pay less to have excellent quality. I love Maimeri Blu (just like the other brands I use: Holbein, Daniel Smith, Schmincke, Winsor & Newton and Sennelier)
I am really thrilled you got a signature set but not happy that it includes Prussian blue which is not lightfast. I hope you warn your viewers about this.
Dang ! Sold out on Amazon already !!
The reds are almost identical. The green gold is great. The black is a good one kinda gray black. Yellow is good.
Jenna! Amazon is already OUT of this set! 😩😱😱
A recent purchase from Amazon. Love them … but the Prussian Blue tube is hard as a rock. Left a note at Amazon but haven’t heard anything about maybe getting a new tube. Otherwise I love the paints
❤️🦋
Jenna, I just attempted to buy this set on Amazon. Unfortunately, it is not available anymore. What a bummer! I thought the price was excellent. I’m really disappointed!!
I felt kindof meh on the choices initially but after perusing their website it is a great limited palette for florals. I was miffed by the additional of black and omission of a brown, thinking you'd be mixing expensive browns but given that 4 of the tubes are series 1 it really isn't a big deal, all the colors are rated transparent and lightfast, and the black is opaque and lightfast. Taken as a whole it's not a bad value for someone following your guides and painting florals for fun who wants artist grade paints. The Green Gold makes sense with the other blue and yellow as you can make all Sap green and Hookers Green, and use it as is. Not my palette, but it's neat.
Thank you this is helpful and the colours are beautiful. I’ve seen other reviewers complain that Maimeri Blu paint leaves bubbles, is that your experience and do you have tips to avoid that please.? TIA
Where is your blue stone ring from? 🌞
How do the Maimeri Blu half-pan compare to the tubes? Does anyone know? I’m interested in buying the Maimeri Blu but the tubes are so expensive and the half-pans are 50% cheaper here in Japan.
I live in India and I can't comment about brands at all as Maimeri Blu isn't available and for beginners I can't buy any other brand like Winsnor and Newton and Daniel Smith.. Please consider my comment as an experience of watercolors and not about the brands at all...
I've been trying to watercolor at very initial stage.. so to learn watercolor I bought a set of pans or cakes named "Camblin Artist Watercolor 24 Shades" at initial levels I liked them very much and even now I love them very much they have very great collection of colors inside.
But as I'm learning and practising more I realised that Big size brushes like Motler brush and Flat and Filbert Brush size 12 are too large for my cakes ... So I again had to invest in Tubes..
So, if you wanna buy pans it's great idea to have an idea how colors look like of certain brands and how watercolors work but, if you wanna dive in deep into Watercolors and want to use large brushes so you have to have invest in tubes later on. So, it's better to start with tubes and buy a color palette 🎨 that contain atleast 20 shades.. 😅 just start small with 3 primary colors and increase your sets as you grow.
She has many videos that help you understand the 3 paint psychology.
And makes you comfortable with even 3 colors. :)
@@kajolnimesh483 Thank you very much for your detailed reply, I really appreciate it!
Can this be purchased in uk?
Hi Jenna. Are these lovely paints all Transparent ? ❤
Check out what pigments are in these tube and google them
It’s unavailable on Amazon 😞
🐞🌷🐝🌵🐟🍆
Love this video!
But...prussian blue and black? In a 6 colors set?🙄
The blue to make greens and the black to darken colors. I personally would not use the black very often
@@amandaterrio4823 I know but prussian blue is a cheap pigment and not very lightfast or useful. My opinion
@@maria.3649Everyone already has an ultramarine or one of the C- blues …. Outside the box is a good thing.
Oh that’s soooo true!!! Yeah everyone always gets ultramarine blue (me too) so this is a great option to expose ourselves to a diversity of pigments 👌
This may be a dumb question but can you mix the paint together to keep ready in your palette before adding water. Eg red and blue mixed for a purple before diluting? I’d like to have all the colours set up ready to go
Quin Red color is similar to mixing Opera Rose and Scarlet Lake (Winsor Newton) or Primary Red-Magenta and Permanent Red Light (MaimeriBlu) Jenna Rainey describes the perfect Opera Rose equivalent as Primary Red-Magenta in her "I Swatched Every Paint and Picked Top 20 for My New Watercolor Palette" seen here ua-cam.com/video/qw2Y7v-hmCI/v-deo.htmlsi=m3n76IkGE8fWzLzB

I bought this brand and have to share that I was underwhelmed unfortunately.
I suggest to start ‘small’ if purchasing. I didn’t 😔 and feel I wasted some big money.
These colors are not exciting and on the boring side.
Daniel Smith has to be the very best of the best IMO
Not a fan. Prussian blue? Black? No thanks.
12 ml, not 15?...pretty spendy,,,all WCs go a long way...to my eye, the red and "pink" are almost indistinguishable...meh...pass...
I have been learning from you for a while now.. 🫶 just bought your new set. Thank you!
DS green gold is my favorite color to paint with- twist my arm, now I’ve GOT to try this one! 😂
