  • In this interview, Daniel Milnor discusses his career arc in the creative industry, his previous career as a photographer, the value of prints, his experience at Kodak and now Blurb. He also shares insight into how photographers fit within the market in 2019 with advice on how to stand out from the masses.
    Dan is a maker and an observer of cultures. He does personal black and white documentary photography and he's spent almost 30 years observing the photography/creative industry around the world.
    You can view some of his work at danielmilnor.photoshelter.com...
    Read some of Dan's writings and watch some of his UA-cam videos at shifter.media/tag/daniel-milnor/
    ***UPDATE**
    The first "W. Eugene Smith" image (the two boys, one with the gun) was actually a William Klein photograph. We apologize for this error but are choosing to keep the video up since UA-cam doesn't have a way to update a video file without losing all engagement that has been collected with the video.

    This is an insanely outstanding interview. I usually never ever comment on videos, but here I am at night watching this from my small town in Spain, when Dan Milnor is putting into words what me (and I’m sure that thousands) of other photographers have felt but not been able to so clearly express... Bravo sir, there is still hope. Muchas gracias 🙏

    "...that's where you're not a photographer; you happen to use photography but you are a creative member of society."

    This is my favorite interview of Dan. I try not to miss any of them on AYP. Thank you for sharing this interview you have an ocean of information, insight and just plain down to earth love of photography that is very motivating. I'm getting into photography a little late in the game, but I shot what I like and hope to leave a body of work behind for my daughter to look at and share with her family. I'm printing a lot more than I ever did thanks to a Dan's advice to get it off hard drives and into people's hands. Be well and safe.

    • @jonstantine
      @jonstantine 3 роки тому +1

      Me too. I’m late to photography and I’m still trying to find my voice. The least I can do right now is be a historian for my family and document as much as I can (hopefully in a creative way), so that future generations can look back and see how where our family came from and the things we lived through.

    Thank you for the video Dan.
    The thing about printing is very true. After watching one of your video, I was inspired to make a book and when I start curating my "best" images, I was left with literally 1 photo of all 10k+. Now I am inspired to have projects and come up with books.
    Also when I print my landscape photos and hang them on my wall, I can spot improvements and the best part of my images, better than the 32-inch 4K monitor that I have. It is a valuable comment and the ones who pursue photography without printing are missing out one of the best critic they could get.
    Digital transformation in general; commoditized many creative fields including writers. Now there is influx of information and you need to really cut through the digital noise in order to find what you are looking for. To do that, you need to have least amount of distraction which is rare.

    • @petercollins7848
      @petercollins7848 2 роки тому

      Dimiitris, I think it is down to how our minds and life experiences help us appreciate different images. That is the wonder of photography or say paintings. If we all reacted the same, we would only ever need a handful of paintings or famous photos, and life would be boring.
