Shifter: How to do Long Term Projects, Part Two

  • Good grief. If you watch this entire thing I'm nominating you for a humanitarian award. Part Two in all its glory. There are more specifics here but there is still a lot to cover in regard to doing long-term work. Each of us navigates photography in our own way but I've learned a thing or two that might be of benefit. Take my opinion for what it is, my opinion nothing more.
The work highlighted here covers a project I worked on for four years. I didn't spend all four years working on this ONE piece, but what you see here is the result of four trips to Sicily. I chose this project simply because it was the first project that popped up when I opened my drive system. I could have chosen a half dozen other projects created during the same time but all the same rules and ideas apply to all. This project IS interesting as it did some a bit of acceptance. This project was published several times, was represented by a Los Angeles gallery, and was also why I was approached by two different publishers who wanted to make this work into a book. I declined both publishing deals as they were, frankly, terrible financial deals. This project is what led me to start self-publishing my work.
Remember, storytelling comes with responsibility. This isn't about YOU it's about THEM. The people you photograph are sacred and should be treated with respect, always, regardless of who they are and what they are doing. If they let you know their lives you have to accept the responsibility that comes with this.
    Start small, have fun.

if I'm shooting and I take a photo that is not technically say a "great" photo but is interesting and compelling, and adds to my story, and I'll never get that moment back, should I still use it? if our audience is the general public, they wouldn't see the photo like our peers would. Over edited photos is a pet peeve of mine.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505

Absolutely. "Adds to the story," is the key. If you are talking a portfolio then I would say no. But books and portfolios are very different things.

What do you suggest is the minimum timeframe for a successful project from start to finish? In my 'backyard' there is an activity I can document. It will take 3 to 6 weeks from start to finish. This will transform the look of our neighborhood. Would that be advisable as a photography project?? Or?.... Thanks for the video.

There is no such thing. I wish there was a simple answer but there isn't. If you LOVE the idea of working on the project, do it. If not, find something else. Most of the time, working on deadline kinda sucks, but it can also force one to perform at a high level. I can't remember the last time I had a project with unlimited time. I'm not sure how I would even begin to deal with that.

Here’s a question that I’m sure everyone thinks about during the work of a “long-term photography project,” - When will I know that I’m “done?” Obviously it would depend upon the complexity of the project on how many months...years a project would take.... is it a gut feeling that you have exhausted the subject? Or....?
I’ve heard answers regarding this from several other shooters, just interested in your spin. Thanks Brother!

You can't hide from your negs. Or files. They will show you the way. Are there holes? Do you have a portfolio or a narrative on your hands? Have you printed the main images and placed them before you to study they work or don't work. Those are the basics, for me, but there are also a myriad of other reasons like losing access, running out of time, etc.

Thanks for this. Good work. What I like about your videos is that you make me think about how your points could apply to other things I do, like writing. Do I get up close enough when I’m writing something? Am I too detached from the characters? Are they in a space I understand? What am I trying to show? Trying to apply good advice for one art to a different art makes me see things differently and just occasionally, I write something a bit better.

So this is probably the single most important video I have seen on UA-cam. Not hyperbole. I do nothing but photo essays because I’m trying to rebuild my family’s visual history, which was largely lost to war and natural disaster. But I believe there is a lot of value in them beyond being mementos for my family. I have been looking for an editor to help me identify and extract that value (if it exists) for years but haven’t found one. Not one. How do I find an appropriate editor? I’ll pay them for their expertise. Thank you for the advice and motivation.

On the upside, after riding your motorcycle you will be able to leap right off and continue directly into the sawmill and have no need to change into any goggles before tossing logs into it and being sprayed with sawdust. Which also means that you will not have to worry should you go to any form of political rally or protest of any kind, since shit splatter whether from speeches, real shit, or shit that flies when someone gets punched, will leave your eyes unscathed. However, you will not be able to un-see what you do see, so, maybe the glasses need a rose tint. Now, should you find that you are at or near any political rally, protest, newly declared zone of some type, it is important to note IF you smell anything. IF you do not smell anything you know you are infected, IF you do smell something you will know that MAYBE your are not infected. Either way you must take care because the Zom-dromeda Strain (it's like the Andromeda Strain only from China), makes zombies of various and assorted kinds that either A: pull down statues and burn police cars, or B plug their ears and hum, or C: decide to watch UA-cam since the news is so in the tank anyway. Now those without the virus are pondering it all. Best wishes! ;)

It's possible but not easy. I know plenty of folks who do this professionally. But being a one person band its' easy and your work will suffer. You simply cant' do three things at once and be great at all three. Stills, motion, sound. That is A LOT to ask. Again, I see it being done all the time but most of these projects are just okay.

You remind me a lot of Sean Tucker...not literally but in the type information you give. Its honest and information with substance. Anyway, weirdly enough something I got out of this was to buy the slightly wider prime lens and not the zoom and force myself to get closer to my subject or rather to "move my body". Im a bit of an introvert but I have to lean into my discomfort to become better. Thanks for awesome videos man.

Yes, primes allow for ONE less item to deal with...zooming. Look for the light, wait for the moment and move your body.

I could write 20x agreed but that would be boring, but that would cover it totally.
Yes, Sicily is great , Palermo in particular, great for Photography, cuisine is amazing with all the influences of the countries that have sieged Sicily in the past.
Been there, had planned to go back this year, but it will still be there, it's Italy at its purest ! (best gelato in the world, don't try it, you will not enjoy ice cream at home anymore)
I liked to go in the dark alleys in the evening and shoot people relaxing outside, craftsman renovating old buildings but also little harbors in the south were I was the only foreigner within miles shooting fisherman doing their thing. If you are a wedding photographer, (I am not)in Palermo they have at least 5 weddings a day , and man do they know how to do a proper wedding.
Nick Nolte, Under Fire, man this is memory lane, old enough to have seen it when it came out in the cinema, and watched it a dozen time afterwards on VCR and Digital !
Salvador I can't recall but I am downloading it as I write ;-)
Yes man, less is more, you can do a portrait with a 28mm if you know what to be aware off, but people rather show you all the expensive lenses you can buy with their links attached, cause life will be useless without them.
I love sixties music and there are so many great B/W videos of the Vietnam war on YT, playing CCR or The Doors , but that footage is awesome, those reporters were aces !

Something I was wondering was when do you think monochrome photography in a body of work works as an intentional choice over simply looking "classic?" Since you seem to prefer it, I'm betting you have a good reason for doing so. And does mixing mono and color often work for a photo series or is that the darkest of sins?

I wanted to do a small project on the travelling community in my home town, it would be considered a bad part but still I thought I'd try it out, everyone I got into contact with were super helpful and considerate, the day before I was supposed to shoot some idiot with a zoom lens decided to shoot from the outside into their little piece of land they had for themselves, after that they completely shut me down, was a bitter pill to swallow, tried to go the right way about it but some Instagram idiot ruined it, I'm all about sharing work online but don't think it for everyone else.

This happens a lot now. IG has ruined many, many things. Natural places and privacy among them. Sorry to hear. You should say "No problem, I totally understand," and then attempt to explain why you are different. Many folks simply do not know.

Thanks Daniel. Thanks for all of this. And hate gear questions too. But! Still curious what developer you have used haha.
Other question though. I know what to do. And I know where to work on. And you are absolutely right about everything. Still driven... Still determent. But due to covid-19 I am forced to shoot in my own country. (The Netherlands). But there is the problem where I run into a blockade. I always have had the blockade of working back home. And I am sure about what I really really really love to do. And those my projects abroad. In my case the Israel and the Palestinian territories and Myanmar. Of course still want to go to other places. But that is for later. I have been working on those for a years. And I know the love for a project needs to be there to make a project successful.
So here is my question. How would you find a project in a place where you are not inspired by?

    • @DANIELMILNOR505
      @DANIELMILNOR505  4 роки тому +1

When I started I used D76, as did just about everyone. But I also used Rodinal and Xtol depending. As for finding a topic. Just think small. One person. One location. I lived in California for years and NEVER was able to work in Orange County. Found it insanely boring. So, I would find little things here and here to get my through.

I took your advice some months ago, Dan and get all my ‘keepers’ printed in 7x5 and pin them to boards in my home office/studio. That way, I live with them while I work at my desk and each one tells me a story and reminds me of a specific assignment and experience . I print my best work in A1/2 or 3 and they are framed and cover the walls in my home. I do self-publish my work in hardback book form and am now working on several zines. All that after getting inspired by your intense presentations. Big thanks and keep putting out the inspirational feed.

Another great video, I made it to the end, all the way to the final tip. If I ever find something I think I could make a proper project out of this video and its prequel are going to be a godsend. I totally agree with not having to much gear, I have more than I need but a lot is historic. Anybody buy a modern digital camera today and still expect it to be purrling like a kitten in 42 years? Didn't think so. I'm currently taking your advice from a previous video and limiting myself to 50mm and living with it; that's working for me.
I strike a middle ground on social media posting - I actually quite enjoy sharing some of my work online (ok, so you now hate and loathe me, I have broad shoulders, I can deal with that). I have two Instagram accounts (okay so now I've upgraded hate and loathe to include revile). On one I share photos of gardens with other people who enjoy gardening and photos of gardens, it's an unofficial community thing. On my other one I share an abstract black and white image most days, I'm improving my abstract black and white image making doing this because I have to go and find that image every day. But that's the edge of my Instagramming. My 'travel' photos (which I'm calling travel because somebody else did, I call them 'photos of places we go'), and other stuff I don't share there.
I always enjoy your content, makes me laugh, makes me think, makes me want to go out and shoot.

I appreciate your time to make these incredible helpful videos. Being able to hear whats really important in photography and the actual reality of developing stories instead of being worried about the gear that we're using makes your content really good and different, Im always recommending you to my fellow photographers.
I asked you a question in one of Marc's (AYP) live videos a while ago about how could we build our reputation as photographers, and share our projects and work with other people without using social media. I'd appreciate if you could talk about this topic, since I find it so hard to get much attention, and reach out to newer people (Potentially somebody to work professionally with) in a society that is deeply immersed in these kinds of platforms. And also what would be your advice and methods of work to totally dump the social media.
