Excellent!!! Thank you for clarifying so much. Only had my BMW for a few days and have barely scratched the surface of it’s features. Fantastic tutorial, you’re very easy to listen to
Very helpful and clear. Thank you! I'm amazed that BMW has not developed a series of videos like this, to help with the somewhat unintuitive iDrive user interface.
Max Highstein Glad it was a beneficial video! BMW does have an official channel as well ua-cam.com/users/BMWUSAplaylists?shelf_id=9&view=50&sort=dd. It is a bit tricky to navigate to but once you find it, there are hundreds of videos available for owners. Let us know if there is anything additional we can assist with
Helpful video. I learned a few things that will help me down the road. Thank you! And, for all the negative commenters, he did not have to make and share a video giving advice. I appreciate his time & helpful tips.
Thanks so much for this video. I couldn't get me navigation to give me an accurate address when asking. I always speak slowly, and I didn't go through the process like you did. I hope this works next time I try.
Thank You for this very instructional vid. I picked up a 2016 X5 last week and even though the genius guy ran me thru the features and I also read the nav manual just yesterday this vid really pulled everything together for me. I especially liked the tip of using the exact menu commands on the screen first. My Wife has an Audi Q5 and I'm going to have her watch this vid as I'm sure some of your tips will work similar on her nav system too!
This is the best of the BMW voice command videos. Could you do a short one about making hands-free calls, with emphasis on how to move through contacts using voice commands to find a particular one - like "Roofer" or "Pediatrician," where those terms are used as Titles in your Android phone contacts, but you can't remember the name? It also would be nice to have some more particular instructions on how to put different things on the Split Screen with the map. For instance, it would be nice to be able to have it revert to a split screen with the map along with trip information, mileage MPG, etc. I would like to have a "Home" screen that always goes to my preferred views, etc. FYI: I drive a 2015 BMW X1 28i with Xdrive, premium package and navi, but no heads up display. Thanks.
Thanks for great tutorial. Especially the part with sending commands to phone. I have been long holding the button and only Siri was chatting with me. Thanks 👍
Very informative. I'd like to see a very short video on how to enter an address in navigation one step at a time (i.e. state, city and street all separately). Thanks!
Wow, mine has never worked like this. I never hear that chime either. Maybe I hold the button down too long because it does look for Siri. Will give it another shot.
@@fernandoangelo5218 Honestly, I forgot about this. I think it's easier to use iDrive to click thru the menu. I would really like to use voice commands when entering an address so I don't have to look and be distracted while driving. Instead I've just been using Waze. Also, I find the addresses in the car's Nav system don't always find an address I'm entering when Waze does. It's so frustrating. Thanks for the reminder though - maybe I'll try again.
@@ljinbs hey, I was reading a little bit more and I think that this is a spec. I think that if your screen is the smaller one and you do not have the professional navigation, it will not work. So we need to do a refit if we want to have it.
@@ljinbs in which country are you? I had actually found here that the spec is called “extended voice control”. So it is an additional spec that we need to add in if we want to use the voice command. I will send you the link where I found it.
Hi there, how do I pair my redial and received call to my Bluetooth.? I have just switched to an XS iPhone and noticed that that the redial and received call didn’t sync to the car. It’s only transferred all the phone book but all the existing redial and received call from my phone didn’t sync. Would you help me? My car model is X3, 2013. It was doing great with my last phone 7 plus!
+Mayank Pathak What is the voice command you are using? Or are you pressing the speaker icon in the navigation menu? If you press the speaker in the Nav menu that toggles on/off the voice instructions. If you don't have an address in navigation that you are actively navigating to, when you toggle on/off the voice instructions it will state that "navigation is not active"
Great Videos! I have a 2011 528i and I'm trying to utilize my S-voice from my Samsung S5 and I can't get it to respond by the long press you mention at the end of the video. Is my older BMW not compatible with this feature (if so, can I buy a hardware component to allow this) or is there a setting I need to adjust. Thanks for the help.
MarkinIt Unfortunately the S-Voice won't work on the 2011 version of the iDrive nor do they offer any hardware/software to add this feature to the vehicle (at least not a BMW specific part). This feature became available in model year 2014 vehicles with iDrive 4.2.
Do I have to say the address? If I have to just go to a store near me, can I just say the store name, for ex. go to target near me? Because we will not have the address handy to many of these stores.
I finished watching the whole (seminar) video, now all I need is to start saving money to buy me a BMW... my current car 1976 FORD Pinto does not offer these nice features... 😕😕😡
2014 535i, cheap sweet spot, n55 engine is reliable aside from the waterpumo failure around 85-100k miles, cheaper to maintain (around 1k a year), quick, sounds GREAT, looks GREAT, couldn't be happier
Regarding Siri on iPhone, I'm unsure if it has that capability. Regarding the BMW, the voice command system can only be triggered via button activation and doesn't turn-on by voice alone. However BMW did recently announce their new iDrive 7.0 that will be in many of its new vehicles (3 series, X5, Z4, 8 series, etc.) and this system will be able to activate by voice only if desired AND the name of the assistant can be changed to the owners preference (i.e. Tina).
Same for me here lads… bmw series 5, built at dec 2014 in Germany. Anyone was able to figure this out? All I can get is pressing it and activating Siri. Do we need to have an subscription active for this to work?
Hi Hansel, I have a 2014 428i with navigation and voice commands and a 20 gig HD. My question is I play my MP3 music via a USB flash drive and for some reasons certain songs only a couple out of a few hundred songs is not showing up in the folder when I open the folder in IDrive and Zi tried to search nothing comes up. I then plug the usb to my computer but I can see the mp3 is in there. I would then create a new folder in the usb and specifically add only those few missing MP3s initially to the new folder to see if it shows up in the iDrive and to my surprise it showed up but still in the original folder I still don’t see those few songs. Do you know the reason for it? It happened a few times to a few mp3s. Odd that the second time I added the mp3 to the new folder the iDrive would detects it but not the first time.any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
Depending on the iDrive system on your car, yes. In the "Contacts" menu (possibly in the "Office" menu depending on equipment) there is a contact labeled "Home" at the very top of the contacts list. This contact is programmed to the vehicle and would allow for the "Navigate home" command once the address is entered here. Once inputting the address make sure to scroll to the "save to vehicle" option and select
Hi, Thanks for getting back to me. I have a brand new i3 with Navigation pro, I have saved my home address but when I ask it to navigate home it comes up with a list of destinations which sound like home, unfortunately none are my home, I guess I will have to do it manually fo now. Or if im feeling really lazy ask the concierge :)
Tim Riley yes depending on the model year/equipment. If you have a navigation system like the one pictured in this video, go to Main Menu>Contacts>Home (at the very top of the list of contacts). Input the address and make sure you "save to vehicle" once you input the address by scrolling to that option on the the screen and selecting it. Then try the command once again

Also, the Google Map function is grayed out - can you tell me why and/or how to fix that? Thank you!!
1. Highlight the category that is showing and select it by pressing the iDrive controller in like a button. This should bring up a list of other categories you can select from. The categories are preprogrammed and cannot be manually input or removed. Do give it a moment as it can take a couple seconds for all the categories to populate.2. Google gets greyed out when the service is no longer active. Usually there is just a subscription that needs to be paid for to have this service. You can sign up at the dealership or at connecteddrive.bmwusa.com/cdp/release/internet/servlet/login?locale=en_US if you have your login credentials from the dealership. Some vehicles, around your model year, lost functionality. Best to check with local dealer IMO.
