It sure looks different without the original power supply. My old Altair was completely stuffed. It kept my Seattle office warm in the winter. I hope someone still has it running.
A super interesting video. My first computer was a C64, so I've never used these older ones, but I find them extremely interesting, especially the Altair 8800 and the IMSAI 8080 ("Wargames" was likely the first time I saw anyone using a home computer, lol).
This is really nice setup , these days I work specialising in migrating legacy enterprise apps from the 80s/90s which has got me into 8x86 CPU emulation etc, at some point I’d really like to build one of these, my expertise tho is on the s/w side a lot to learn re the electronics side …
It truly is amazing how we have gone from a system in a box to SOCs(System on a chip) an entire system on a chip smaller that one of the small chips on these boards. That whole system would be software emulated now should it be needed. Amazing.
Looks like it will eventually be posted on his website at: deramp.com/altair.html But no info yet as I assume because the video just came out. I'm looking to build one myself as well once the parts are listed.

Howdy! Question - The FDC+ settings here ought be reliable as a visual reference for my own setup, right? Currently trying to get my FDC+ and 2SIOJP to coexist nicely.
So cool!!! Got my Altair clone already and now I can't help but think about upgrading it to the real thing! Can't wait to see the details on the boards you used and how much this upgrade would cost in full
I want one so badly, including a "matching" terminal screen and keyboard and just play with it. Maybe find a way to put in teletype and dot-matrix printer support for maximum hilarious-ness. I love vintage tech and I'd do anything to get my hands on them, even the IBM 1401.
Were there any CPU boards for s100 machines that had multiple Z80's or 8080's on them for parallel processing, or something like hardware assisted time sharing?
It depends on the power supplies you choose, but most any switching supplies (including the ones in the system demonstrated), will run from US or European A/C mains without having to change anything.
I didn't own an Altair 8800 but I did own an Altair 680 and an Imsai 8080. Brings back memories.
I’ve never used an Altair and I doubt I’ll ever purchase a real one or clone, but I love watching these videos from beginning to end.
you can get an altair arduino for around $180 but you have to build it yourself. the prebuilt is $250
2:58 THIS is the coolest most satisfying sound, wow!
I’m jealous... this takes me back to my first builds in the 70s !
this is like assembling a Ford model T from scratch

At last, a new video from you. We missed you! Imagine the paper that 'USA' program would take if it were input to a teletypewriter.

These clear explanations are the best on youtube.
The engineer who made of that clone setup really seemed to do their due diligence in making the right improvements for it. Great job.

You've been busy! Thank you for sharing!!!

Nice. I sold my Altair 8800 10+ years ago on ebay for $6800. I would like to have another, so this looks like a great option! Thanks for sharing!
😮 wow!
Do you have any links to places where you can get these parts?

I love this! I'd love to build this one day.

i subscribe to your channel i love these old technology system those were the days love to have one of these altairs systems

I'd like to know more about the negative power supply. How did you manage to configure it for negative output, working alongside the positive one?

@deramp5113 - What's with the three BNC connectors on the right? mod?
How did you get the beeping sounds at 3:14?
The BASIC program sends an ASCII 07 (ctrl-g, BEL) to the terminal and the terminal beeps.
Hang on: how does the ‘USA’ program have sound?
This is so flippin cool 😎
Very cool machine I would love to own one, don't really want the "Clone" since I'd like the S-100 bus more like this
Would be nice to buy mainboard and cpu board and other boards as a kit's end case as a kit of course.

That's a very nice website!
Good job!
Zero dislikes.
I am however tempted.
Wow!
the altair 8800a has an 18 slot motherboard.
Could in theory a person put an ide hard drive in this computer?
Will it work with 230 volts / 50 Hz in Europe?

Love it.
If only Wang had foresaw the personal computer.
It wasn't easy to get an Altair back in the day either. demand outstripped the supply.
Don't use dynamic RAM? Sure, if you're so super-rich you can actually afford a whole 64k of static RAM!
