The only other 8" drive I've seen was a Scientific Atlanta running a vibration machine at work. It didn't work but the 8" hard drive still was in working order. It also was not Y2K compatible...🤔 Good video!
The biggest problem is that 1.44M floppy drives spin at 300 rpm and 8 inch drives spin at 360 rpm. Some 3.5 inch drives could be strapped for 300/360 rpm, but i imagine they're not that common anymore.
Well, now you have to show us how this handles the standard densities of standard 3 1/2" disks! Oh, and then hook in some super-high-density floppies like LS-240s and Zip 750s! And then go back the other way and get a 2.8" floppy for those Smith Corona typewriters and Nintendo Famicoms, and then go even smaller physically with those 2" floppy disks of 3 flavors: VF, Hitachi, and PocketZip/Clik!
I'm guessing some reconfiguration on the board is required when changing between drives, or is it all transparent to the user? Also you used an 8800B instead of the clone. Would this demo have worked using the clone as well?
does it matter which way you put the disk in? because I notice with the 5" and 8" that they look almost the same on both sides, unlike the 3.5" floppies.
Label side up. If you put a double sided disk in upside down it will be spinning backwards. On a single sided disk there is only one head so you must put it in with the recorded side towards the drives "up" side
To be fair though, if it's spinning backwards then you just have to issue WRITE commands instead of READ commands and vice-versa, as the bits will be flowing in the backwards direction.... Although If you're in the southern hemisphere, then you NEED TO put the disk in upside down. And it won't work at the equator at all. ;)
I have a technical question. If you find an old Altair floppy drive, is there a safe way to test it? Should you take it apart first, and check for any cap leakage first? But even if you do not see any, what is the safest way to check this drive out?
Great job. You've finally made a substantial improvement on my design of 40 years ago. Of course back then I had no idea what I was doing! By the way, are you using a genuine MITS copy of Altair Disk Basic? If you are using a bootleg copy you can just send my the list price plus 40 years of compound interest :-) Tom Durston
Thomas Durston Avast, me hearties! I smell a Pirate Copy.... Compound Interest Arrr! Arrr! Arrr !!!... I would prefer an Ackerman-Péter function of f (n) = A (n, n).. to plane old Comp Interest PS: Tom did you ever get any money from Bill.
It's a lot easier with today's tools than what you had to work with! As far as software licensing goes, I guess any chance of breaking even on this project just went down the toilet :)
The Pumpking King No worries mate. Arrrr arrr arrr backatcha. I never got any money from Bill. I did ask him in 1995 for help in my hi-tech startup company, but he passed me along to a vulture capitalist and they never called back. No hard feelings, Bill did what he did best, and kept most of his money. But now he's very generous with his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
deramp5113 I hope you sell a bunch of your FDC+ boards. You _do_ make a few bucks on each board you sell, don't you? Gotta do better than break even, even if your software is free!!!! Almost like the MITS ROI model?
I’ve never seen much to do with 8 inch floppy disks and to watch this is incredible! It’s amazing to see this

Is it possible to mount a 1.44M floppy drive onto the system?

Good Video but my question would be the Speed Rate and data Flow speeds..

Those pertec-mini floppy drives are as rare as unicorn teeth.

;)
It will work just put the disk sideways
what the fuck, is this true?
Do you know where we can download the FDC+ Server program?
A link to the server program is on the FDC+ support page at deramp.com/fdc+support.htm

Lunar lander....from the text I can see that is a dark game. Prayers?!
It would be so cool if you could use real floppy disks with the altair clone!

@@deramp5113 can you run
3.5 inch floppy disks?
Esse altair 8800b é lindo meu Deus tenho sonho de ter um desses pena que uma coisa relíquia é cara de se ter qual será preço de um desses hoje em dia
all this is now hidden as the computer does this by itself.
Note: if electronic equipment like a disk drive does not work, it is recommended to send it to a recycling centre, *not* to the trash.
transperent .
more please .
Hhhh
