Greetings from the man who goes through all the canon parts of Rance. I know a lot of retro fans won't like what I've said, but right now the older parts are literally seen as a sketch for remakes. For example, playing IV after 03 was hard, and it wasn't even the gameplay, it was the story and characters. It all feels like a youtube video of an anime story in 5 minutes.
I think the retro titles need to be looked at as a product of its time. Back in the early 90s it was exceptionally rare for games to even attempt to tell a real story. Shit, FFIV was basically the gold standard and imo, that's a heavily flawed story. Combine that with the fact that 03 really expended on everything (Google tells me that it has like 2x the playtime of III) and I'm not surprised that IV was a downgrade.
@@Adze According to VNDB not x2, but x4. And 70% of the time is occupied by the story/dialogs, for example, in IV the opposite situation (not quite true, but the gameplay is really more).
man, I can't wait for you to play all the other games and review them, so far you've consistently been the best rance reviewer I've seen (and I already watched/read most if not all of the rance reviews currently out there lol), I'd love to see your future reviews, especially hyped for the day when rance X comes out and you do a 3 hour review (considering how long it is and a tweet you made saying that every review you make is longer than the last one xD) not that I'm only here for rance though, I also enjoyed your saya no uta and muv-luv reviews
I've seen how ridiculously long X is, so I'm sure it's going to be a fat video to say the least. Shit, due to the sheer time commitment, I might even have to make it something I work on bit by bit in between other videos
@@Adze to be fair you can finish X "only" in less than 100h if you go straight for the true ending (which is something pretty difficult and you'd probably need a guide) the thing is it has enough side content so that you need to play it atleast 10+ times (with a guide) to see most of it, and even when you've seen most stuff and skip all the text the gameplay alone takes you a few hours to do a single run
I mean, I could do that, but I think scumming my way through to get the true ending right at the start would make my experience worse and would probably make for a shittier video (I'm sure I could BS a decent script out of that, but it wouldn't be the best I could do). The plan is to do one playthrough completely blind and then do a judgement call for how much I want to use guides and stuff to get the stuff I missed
@@Adze yeah that's what I did, I went completely blind at first (even though I used a walkthrough on most other games, but it's worth it in X to go blind) all of the endings are worth clearing out, and getting to the true ending on your first playthroughs is actually quite hard to do as you unlock NG+ bonuses for each ending which you're supposed to use for the harder endings (but tryhard people manage to do it without bonuses anyway, I don't know how)
I double going in blind, as with most games that have multiple endings or necessitate multiple playthroughs. I didn't go looking for guides because there were no when I played, and as a result, I have over 400hr (The replayability and addictive combat is just unbelievably good) and still have a few endings that I can't complete. The game is just way too big and stuffed with content that even with a guide you'll have trouble 'completing' the game in its entirety. So I would suggest going and discovering the game as you play and choosing the content you find worthy of your time investment. But hey, it'll be a long time before the translation comes out so think about enjoying the other stories in the series first. Really looking forwards to what you think about them.

Looks like I will, you sold me on it, so great video man! (at least the first part, since I want to avoid spoilers, but I'm definitely coming back once I beat it myself). Even if the game itself was garbage, I'd have still recommended it for those who can't understand the remake. It's just that so much happens to set the series in motion. It's too important to skip

Oh that wasn't changed in 03, he did the same thing there. :) I am currently reading IX and of course Rance is still horny but his brutality is greatly dismissed compared to the (chronological) early games. It's like night and day.
While he does murder the shop owner in both games, the context changes. In Rance III, the shop owner gets his shop raided by a thief and he loses the weapons. In Rance 03 he gives them away right after you successfully manage to raise money just to spite Rance for banging his daughter (that he also lusts for). The end result is the same (Rance gets angry and kills the shop owner), but Rance's actions are a *little* more justified in the remake.
Ughhh. 02 was such a slog near the end. I’m glad that this game has a more interesting combat system. Hope 03 comes out in English cause 01 was a blast
Do you mean that you found 4 > Sengoku?? wow... Anyways I thought anybody would agree that Kichikuou and X are the best games (Personally both are the best vns ever, by far) I enjoyed 03 somewhat more than Sengoku tho, but IX way more than both of them.
Regarding the translation choices and the setting of Rance, in the backstory it's actually told that Rance world really do speak Japanese. Or rather, JAPANese. To illustrate the absurdity of Skill Lv. 3, Emperor Fujiwara of Japan who was one of the only known Skill Lv. 3 bearer before Rance Quest and the only known natural bearer of Sword Combat Lv. 3 skill, and he conquered all of the human world, before the Gods actually begged the Demon King of the era to deal with him - he sent Sengoku Rance's main antagonist which Fujiwara cannot deal with as he had no way of dealing with the Invincibility Field. He's probably the character with the most impact of present Rance world status quo right after Demon King Gai and part of that is that everyone speaks JAPANese due to his rule over the human lands. Rance verse is such a weird but fun world. Edit: it's also good for pronunciation -- just follow the Japanese pronunciation for the words (funny story, for the longest time I thought Demon King Gi is pronounced Ghee instead of Gai). L'Zile is written as Raji-ru and Noce is written as Nosu. The wiki should have the Japanese and romaji written out.
