    Okay guys! In this video I compare the differences between Robert Muldoon and Roland Tembo from The Lost World and Jurassic Park! I basically go into detail on everything about Pete Postlethwaite's character in Jurassic Park 2 and talk about how he compares to Bob Peck's Robert Muldoon. The Jurassic Park Hunters are honestly some of the coolest dudes in the first two movies. Quotes like Shoot Her, and Clever Girl would never exist without them! InGen should be proud! :D

    Similarities: Both of them are played by impeccable British stage actors. Both Muldoon and Tembo are incredible iconic characters! Tembo is undoubtedly my most favourite character in the Lost World. And I wish Muldoon was given more screen time in JP1. His premature death was totally uncalled for. Goes on to show that no one was safe in Jurassic park..not even someone as able, cautious and intelligent as Muldoon.

    One factor that I'm actually REALLY surprised you didn't bring up when discussing the Novel version of Muldoon is the fact that he was working with Novel Hammond, who refused to give him proper funding and equipment for his job. That isn't the case for Movie Muldoon as shown by the opening of the first movie, but for both Muldoons they were working with a severe staff shortage and also had to handle all of the predators running around. Further, both Muldoons are only familiar with Raptor behaviour in the incredibly confined space of their pen, not out in the jungles of the wild. Movie Muldoon also had no access to Dr. Grant after the power went out, so he had no opportunity to ask him if there was anything he knew about Raptors that would be useful before setting out for the generator, and Dr. Sattler wouldn't be helpful for that because she's a paleobotanist.
    Lastly, I would actually argue that the situation in Jurassic Park regarding the carnivores is different and arguably MORE dangerous than Site B. With Site B all of the carnivores had established territories that Roland was prepared for thanks to documentation from InGen when Site B was operational. With Jurassic Park however, the predators had only just escaped and were roaming around pretty much the entire island because they don't have any territory established yet. To compare, on Site B nobody comes into contact with Raptors until they wander directly into their territory, while in Jurassic Park, the Raptors could be pretty much anywhere after they escape the pen. In classic JP fashion, it was chaos, and thus extremely hard to predict.
    But to counter-point all of what I said above, Tembo had an overall much better handle on things despite having a very similar background to Muldoon. Muldoon in the movie always came off as more of a zoo park warden to me, but everything about Tembo just oozed his experience in hunting big game, experience he put to effective use in the film. As you said at the end of the video, it was he who walked out of the movie alive while Muldoon bit the dust. It would be interesting to see how things would have played out if Tembo were hired for the Jurassic Park job and Novel Muldoon was hired for the Site B capture job.

      @jrus690 3 роки тому +6

      In the novel, there is a serious lack of weapons in Jurassic Park, as they decided not to have tranquilizer guns, it was just a writer decision to make a point about the speed of the animals being higher than what the handlers expected. In the movie, they have a whole pile of guns and the speed of the animals is not brought up the same way, possibly partly because the visual effects of the time could not show it anyways.

    • @neldormiveglia1312
      @neldormiveglia1312 3 роки тому +5

      You're so right. In site B the animals had developed their natural behavioral traits and instincts. In site A, they were just confined animals, bred and raised in captivity, with no family bonds at all. They were basically ticking time bombs.

      Roland would’ve survived if he were put into Muldoon’s place because Roland actually had a wealth of experience with predator behavior and I get the feeling he would have done independent research into what ever animals he would be in charge of so he would’ve had knowledge of behaviors.

    Muldoon had the unfortunate task of taking on the raptors and roland didn't. Sneaking up on and tranquilizing Rex when it was distracted is cool but isn't really that impressive or difficult considering the size of the target and he general had 30 other bite sized companions around to get eaten in dangerous times instead of himself. I think muldoon was less outsmarted and more outnumbered. And while sorna was "their turf" the hunters had charts to show the different animals territory so they were generally well aware of what was around. Muldoon and tembo r both awesome, I just think muldoon got shortchanged by facing the much more intelligent and dangerous adversary

    Its worth noting that Muldoon didnt have any kind of backup as well. You have a programmer (Nedry), a system administrator (Arnold), the aged founder (Hammond), two kids (Lex and Tim), three scientists (Grant, Sadler, Malcom) and one "blood sucking lawyer" (Gennaro). Muldoon was one of the only people on the island that probably ever even held a gun before. (Grant does seem to know what he was doing). Tembo had not only a trusted friend with him but also a squad of heavily armed mercs.

    In defense of Muldoon, it isn’t entirely fair to say he had the easier situation, yes he had the protection of buildings and such, but all of the Jurassic Park staff were gone. He was so short handed he took a visiting scientist with him to search the aftermath of theT-Rex attack, Roland had a very large camp of hunters as well as much more firepower.

      Don't mind if take his chance about the situation, but following the logic of a real hunting scenario, Roland Tembo rans off against the T-Rex to protect the party more than the hunt of the trophy itself.
      If really was his plan to hunt don't matter any consequences the T-Rex, Roland would spend the time to search in the hunty party stuff a weapon lil deadly enough to hunt and kill the T-Rex like the HK91/G3 in .308 that Dieter and other hunters bring and make multiple lucky shots or 1 very precise shot against the T-Rex as the hunter Karajomo Bell did with the "underpowered" 7x57 mauser to hunt elephants, but instead prefer to think about the hunting party and the most effective weapon to stop (don't kill) the Rex and use the tranquilizer dart rifle to stop it.

    I really wish Muldoon had been given a sequence to do some cool stuff. Bob Peck's acting really sold the character for me, and seeing him act like a badass and then drop like a fly was disappointing.
    Like, how much cooler would it have been if the raptor ambush was ambiguous, and then he came back later?
    Maybe Grant, Sattler and the kids have just called Hammond, and the raptor breaks through the glass. This time, Grant doesn't have a gun, but shots ring out anyway. Muldoon stands in the doorway, the barrel of his SPAS 12 smoking, the raptors momentarily dispersed. "Come on," he says, "We have to move."
    He leads them safely to the main lobby, and he, Lex, and Sattler run outside, but Tim trips, and Grant goes back for them, only for them both to get cornered by two raptors. Then we can keep the excellent T-rex rescue scene, and Muldoon gets a chance to be all heroic by watching everyone's backs as they leave the control room.

    Muldoon in the book was a badass. In the movie he's still a badass, but I feel like in the situation they are in during the film, he chooses to sacrifice himself so that Ellie can get to the shed and restore electricity. We know he was well aware of the velociraptors' hunting strategy. He knew they don't attack at once, they attack as a pack and when you think you have one facing you upfront, you really have other two on either sides. He knew, he just chose to take it for the greater good.
    I always liked the way everything went down in the book more than the film, but I understand that all of the shenanigans didn't fit in the first film so they changed things up to make it make sense.
    The river plot we got to see in JP3, the waterfall scene we got in JP2, the way Henry insisted to Hammond on creating ''hybrids'' or improved versions of dinosaurs we got in JW1 and JW2... Even the scene where the T-Rex sets loose and starts killing other dinosaurs we got in JW1 but instead of the T-Rex it's the I-Rex.

    I think Muldoon was the better hunter. He was put in a situation that he didn't plan on. Facing off both against the storm which left him understaffed and Nedry's sabotage. Roland on the other hand knew exactly what he was getting into and brought a small army with him.

  • @jhoss0743
    @jhoss0743 5 років тому +4

    When it comes to being a team player, I'd say Muldoon was slightly better. Both men put safety first and both ran into danger when others were running out. The deciding factor is when the two left their group. Roland leaves the hunting party to collect his fee, and possibly get away from Ludlow. I always assumed Muldoon told Ellie to "go now!" and walked into the raptor's trap so Muldoon would keep the predator's attention on him instead of Ellie.

    Both men are consummate professionals who aren't willing to die obeying "rich dentists". I think Muldoon had to die because 'plot'. Basically to prove no1 knows the raptors really. I dont think Roland let whatsherface keep her jacket as bait. It did seem to work that way but he seemed too noble for that. Remember the deleted scene where he defends the African waitress? He didnt have to do that, yanno? It suggests a sense of right and wrong I found lacking in Vince Vaughn's character.

      Yeah, I really don't think he kept quiet about the jacket to use as bait, it's not the way of a "gentleman hunter" that both he and Muldoon had the air of (while not buying into the hype amd legend of it themselves; the only way to really make that kind of character work nowadays). I prefer to think that it was just a lapse in judgment do to having so much on his plate.

    With the films seeming to give half of Roberts accomplishments in the novel to Roland (admittedly some of his most impressive accomplishments) I would say that my vote goes to Roland. The fact that Robert "knew more about the raptors than anyone" and was still outsmarted by a strategy that Alan Grant could formulate just by studying their bones is a much bigger blunder than Roland being sabotaged by Nick. Especially considering Roland was quickly able to realize the sabotage, and improvise to tranq the buck rex during the chaos of the rexes attack on the camp.

      Arnold had just been killed recently in that area, so that probably explains why they were already in the vicinity. They might have deduced that others would come looking for the person they just killed. Or maybe that area was just a good spot for them to hunt in general, so they typically stayed there as it provided good cover for sneak attacks and traps. I guess the latter would sort of tie into your theory of the raptors thinking the door leads somewhere, so that might be why they chose that spot assuming someone would eventually come by.

    I like them both equally. While Tembo is an utter badass, he remains calm and level-headed while everyone else panics (such as during the rex attack on the camp), he is also capable of coming up with elaborate plans to hunt his prey to a greater extent than Muldoon in the movie - also shows a greater deal of leadership than the game warden, albeit because of the situations they were put in being drastically different. Muldoon, on the other hand, has a nigh intimate knowledge of the beasts he is in charge of, and while he failed to kill the velociraptor in the movie, he did show more care for accomplishing the goal and preserving the life of humans over his desire for glory - Tembo's baby Rex bait was fairly close to the camp, even if the buck were to be killed, the rampaging mother would still likely cause great destruction and possibly claim lives. Both have different characters and different goals, and deal with the situations in a different manner, but I don't like one over the other - mad respect for them both for being great, reasonably portrayed characters (*coughJP3mercscough*), responsible for some of the most iconic scenes and/or lines in the franchise.
    ...the video reminds me that I need to re-read the book, though. I barely appreciated it as a teen, and since I know The Lost World also exists as a novel, drastically different from the movie, that's even more a reason to do so. Looking forward to that.

    You are correct in the end of your video , which is very informative and enjoyable. A very sad but crazy thing is that both actors died after their respective portrayals of what was supposed to be the same character. I appriciate the theme of second life's in both Crichton's works and the films. In the novels, it was Dr. Malcom who was given the "2nd" chance at life. In the films, a less obvious, "reincarnation" for Muldoon's character in Roland Tembo, and the actions he takes. I hadn't noticed the Muldoon-Tembo connection until you mentioned it Klayton.
    Also, leaving your weapon next to a known eco-terrorist, Van Owen, and not carrying at least one reload for his rifle on his person is such a amateur mistake it's hard to take Tembo seriously as a hunter.

      He also remained cool, calm and collected when finding Regis leg, picking up Regis dismembered hand to inspect the broken watch, and when examining Nedrys body while retrieving his RPG from the Jeep.
      He also stood his ground with the rex for a moment, before he realised the tranquilizer wasn't going to take effect soon enough.
