Very happy to see Aasimar be included in the book. We had Tieflings, so it makes sense that they are included as a base race. Never quite understood why WotC was trying to make a whole new one when we had one already that fans liked.

That was supposed to be their Beast Kin catch all. I don't know why they insisted on making them divine. I think they were taking inspiration from pantheons like the Egyptian gods that have animal heads. If they leaned more into nature magic and animal abilities (which they did the second one in their second iteration) I think people would have been more open to it and there were wouldn't have been so many Aasimar comparisons.

Agreed, it's basically 5.5 or maybe even 6. Would like to have Johnny explain his thoughts. But having played 3 extensively and then switched and played 3.5 extensively and then Pathfinder, these are all the same sort of tweaks between those editions. Minor changes to feets, skills, class, etc. - even basing - it was all just enough to make using a 3e version next to impossible or at least very frustrating with 3.5. Enough so that our entire group shifted over each time and I suspect that we'll see the same happen whereby everyone at the table will need to use the 5.5e version of the game and if the DM wants to run an older 5e module they'll need to use the 5.5e version of the monster or convert the monster by hand before the game.

A few years back GameStop had announced that it would start carrying D&D 5e products and possibly other TTRPGs. They also announced that some locations would be expanding to host in store ttrpg and MtG game nights. So, Game Informer makes sense, with them transitioning to be a store for video games and ttrpgs. Especially with most video games going to digital releases. It opened more space in their stores to carry other products.

Just a heads up, you can no longer pick and choose what you want to buy from a book on D&D Beyond. If you want even one thing from a book then you have to pay the entire price for the full book. You can also no longer preview the individual things that come in each book. So you have no idea what you're actually buying when you buy the book. You would have to look up the contents of the book through a third party source to have any idea what you're actually buying. This has gotten almost no attention in the D&D youtube circles. Wotc really snuck this one in under the radar.

If the ASI isn't tied to something in character creation it will be forgotten by newer players. I wonder if classes will get updates again. Since newer sorcerer subclasses got spells, it’d be nice for older subclasses to get spells added or something. I found some really good homebrew that fits with the newer subclasses, but not every DM likes homebrew content. Also wish we could get a werewolf race in the same vain as the Gothic Lineages that isn’t OP af. Plus more general Beast races (like dogfolk)

Given the Article said new races LIKE Aasimar, Goliaths, and Orcs, the way it was phrased made it sound like those where just an example of new races in the PHB, so its possible a beastfolk race, with a dog/wolf subtype could be in it, along with other possible races like Genasi & Gith. Just speculation on my part. Haregon (Rabbitfolk) are in PHB one internal piece of PHB art, so that could be a hint of that.

The naming convention makes sense when you understand how version control works.
A major version (the difference between 4e and 5e) has very little to no compatability with each other. The underlying math is completely incompatable, even if the user interface is largely the same. They have different engines.
A major revision (x.1.0) changes the substructure of the game and makes it a different experience, but the underlying math is still the same. It has the same engine. If you plug in old adventures, their monsters will still hit as often and do the correct percentage of damage.
This upcoming version of DnD could be correctly termed 5.1e, because thats how version control works.

Two problems with this take. 1) This isn't software and has never followed software version control. Maybe it should but it hasn't. Based on D&D version rules this would be something like 5.5 or 6.0. 2) If we did follow these rules then arguably Xanathar's would be 5.1 and Tasha's would be 5.2, etc. We have several books now that have added subclasses, feats, spells, etc. By my count this would be 5.7.

I want to paste on Fire Resistance and _Fire Bolt_ to an NPC and say it's a Tiefling or give it _Minor Illusion_ and _Speak With Animals_ and say it's a Gnome AND be able to do so at any level of play. And that's just on a personal note. *For the game at large, it means Humanoids can have a stronger presence in encounters.* You won't (necessarily) have to worry as much about how many Resistances or Immunities you'll go up against, unlike with the plethora of fiends and elementals and undead you usually fight at higher levels. Even better, you might be able to reason with these people. Or maybe they're even worse murderhobos than the party? Who knows, power corrupts and all that! What a gigantic relief this is.

    • @clarkside4493
      @clarkside4493 4 місяці тому +1

@kitnal4143 I would do that for significant NPCs, but not for more generic ones because that's a lot of trouble to have to go through. Plus, we need parameters for NPCs that don't hinge on class levels.
Like, if I make the Gladiator NPC an Air Genasi, I have to decide what level he counts as for his _Shocking Grasp_ and whether or not he has his other racial spells. Then I have to decide how to incorporate those spells into his attack routine, because otherwise he likely won't use the features I gave him.
The NPCs don't have class levels, and recent monster stat blocks will give a class as a tag (meaning they count as that class) but not a class level nor abilities traditionally from that class.
For custom monsters from scratch, I want a template that is easy to tweak for each challenge rating. The tables for making monsters right now are a mess.

Even if that was almost entirely on WotC forcing creators to retcon and redo stories to fit the new lore they wanted and not specifically the idea of the Nentir Vale/Points of Light, just the idea of "Points of Light = 4e = ew yuck, get it away" is enough.

In my opinion that would be a terroble idea., outside of places like Ravenloft. I want to play in lands/settings I love. 5E was absolutely terrible about introducing settings, with Dragonlance being devoid of 99% of it's content. Planescape and Spelljammer are close to unplayable and unfinished. Ravenloft sort of includes the setting through Adventurers League, sort of, and that second book, (can't think of the name) offered a primer, but even that was a watered down bare bones view.
Personally, I dislike FR. I wouldn't say hate it, but I'm not a fan.I am cautiously thankful they are going away from it. I have always felt Greyhawk was a much better setting, particularly as an introductory or baseline one. I get it is not the main setting here, but it would work very well as one.

All great stuff. My table play tested the majority of the One D&D changes, most of them were good, some were not, and those seem to have all gotten dropped. So, yeah, looking really good...

Judging by the art direction and quality, the new stuff seems world class. The big question is will the content be a fraction of the art's quality, or just a suite of minor balances and revisions buried among the lavish revised art pieces? Honestly, they really need to make a good first impression with the new PHB, which seems a bit trickier based on what UA stuff we've seen. The DMG has nothing but room for improvement, as even WOTC acknowledged most people were just using it as a glorified magic item collection tucked away in a useless book. And there's also tons of room for upgrades in the new MM: even if they don't dramatically improve the often boring mechanics of so many of the monsters, rounding out the numbers of lacking creatures like Fey and Oozes will give it some good new features to boast about. Whereas the PHB...we'll see.

    • @matthewsnow-zj1cu

Yeah. The hard part is so many 3rd parties have produced good monster volumes too in the interim. Kobold Press’s own system, Tales of the Valiant, has a lot of positively implemented unique mechanics for each monster. MCDM Flee Mortals took some 4e style sensibilities and custom kitted them onto 5E monsters in a fun way.
I’m sure the DnD design team is aware of all those products and are seeking to improve the monster action variety. Let’s hope we see something like it in the new MM.

  • @elfmage_gg
    @elfmage_gg 4 місяці тому +3

This is the way I currently look at it. It's a patch or a content update ... just like a video game that is a live service. This is why it's still compatible with our current 5e stuff, the changes are not as drastic previous edition changes/updates. If it was a fully new edition that would likely not be possible, the goal or what people would believe. That perception is in my opinion very important to keep as many people as possible from jumping ship. In the past they've had issues with transitioning players to new editions as much of their previous content is no longer valid without significant modification. (ex. I still have to/would like to DM Storm Kings Thunder, damn now I have to update everything ... vs oh cool I can update the ruleset and it's still "100% compatible") This time around the wording Hasbro/Wizards keeps choosing is very selective leading me to currently believe what I stated above. Moving forward I think they'll start calling it just Dungeons and Dragons, dropping the edition number or references to an edition number and give the system new content updates periodically as they feel necessary. I believe they are not directly saying this because they may feel too many people will 'freak out' as they'll feel they'll be forced to keep up with the new rules books like you had to in the past however now you just have to buy the updated content to play on the 'current patch' or whatever you wish to call it. Better yet, subscribe to dndbeyond for 30$/month and get the updated rules and access to a VTT which uses the ruleset. (We may get there, if this is their goal) Yes they're going to be people who just find other system or keep with an edition they like/are comfortable with, but to limit that number is what Hasbro may be going for at a marketing level here.
I'm more than happy to be wrong, only time will tell. Though as they continue to push the online features this will become easier and easier to do over time (I'm refering to my continued content update idea) as more of the existing player base transition to being more or fully digital, and newer players are basically only digital because why buy things 2 or 3 times (book, dndbeyond sub, VTT ... etc).

Tbf the information needed to run the game with the original World of Greyhawk book is pretty minimal. A lot of pages in that book were dedicated to humanoid random encounter groups for each region and detailing their makeup to sell the flavor of feudalist realism. In fact it might even have more detail on the main city of greyhawk than the original world of greyhawk book since the other side of the foldout map will be the city.

@@tazmokhan7614 The one that I am reading from archive has all the booklets, it's only 152 pages total and that's including the foldout map as many pages so probably only 130, which isn't that much in comparison to recent setting books. But again, most of it is filled with fluff. The Glossography section full of specific rules, political rules, weather generation, specific military encounters, and stats for people aren't needed aside from perhaps some adventuring hooks, as those are better handled in the other chapters of the DMG. The Guide to the World of Greyhawk is mostly a gazetteer, and I think that's what they are gonna mostly adapt since they are going to make a new map. They are probably gonna trim down some of the description of specific places and instead detail more of the bigger picture and larger regions, leaving some space for the smaller domains for the DM. The political divisions chapter was only 28 pages, so streamlining it they can probably cut that to 15 pages, and then add 5-10 more for other important areas. I expect Greyhawk to be a 25 page gazetteer/primer which is the perfect length to handout to a player or new DM wanting to make it their own. The trimmed D&D Setting Gazetteer for 3e was like this, it was 32 pages but it also had to explain all the extra lore from the events that happened between editions. I fully expect Greyhawk to be rebooted to either 576CY to get back to the basics and the classic era. Either that or going 50 years forward from then to make it similar to the anniversary and having a bit of a fresher start.

I feel positive about all this so far. I look foward to seeing more.

As I said on my channel, the new PHB cover art exemplifies - for better or worse - the quality of abundant complexity that even the core rule books tout. There's a lot going on in the image. Obviously it's some kind of battle but what exactly is going on? Compare to the 1st edition PHB art with a group of adventurers stealing a gem from an idol's eye, it's really a very different tone.

32:37 No DM should feel 'locked out of' using vampires at early levels. You don't always have to scale encounters to balance with party level. Injecting real threat and fear creates higher verisimilitude and often creates the most memorable game nights. Putting a first level party against a vampire can be a lot of fun for everyone! The world of D&D adventuring *should* be a dangerous place, after all

D&D as a service instead of a game

I like that the new PHB has more PCs on the front cover. Its like AD&D PHB but you know with diversity. Looking good!

So I really like Pathfinder system although I have changes for it that I do for myself but I really like having to have to work around restrictions which is what I consider ability scores to be so you know I want to play and work cleric for mage what's a mage cuz usually intellect is there a flaw well you know I can play that and I'm not going to be as good as someone else but there might be other ways to have fun with that maybe not the best example but I like restrictions I think restrictions are good

I've been calling it 5.2. They want to make the 5th edition the last edition. But play styles will change, and we will probably need a 5.3 a 5.4 and so on.
I love 5th edition, and I like it over Pathfinder and the rest.
