I am a Vietnam combat veteran with VA diagnosed chronic PTSD. 4 years ago I became determined to help myself that my counselors, restricted in their approach by the VA, were not allowed to do. I eliminated all refined carbs, sugars and oils in all forms, toxins, processed food everything’s. The result is nothing short of miraculous. My base line glucose that I track 3 times daily is 101 and my blood pressure base line is 110/72. I took up running… I run 3 miles every morning at 4:00 AM. I’ll be 78 this June. My life and my 48 year relationship with my wife has never been better. These podcast by Andrew are an important component to the recipe of my success.
- Three things that changed my life: 1. started watching health videos 2. I read the book called: Health Secrets Industry Hides 3. I stopped eating excess sugar
Until I cut out caffeine I didn't realize how much it effected me negatively when I thought it was impacting me positively. I'm also glad people are starting to acknowledge the truth about food dyes!
@tylerh7647 toxins building up in my system from drinking daily, giving me heart issues and flaring up my POTS, negatively impacting my racing thoughts and spiking symptoms of my Cptsd, made me aggressive and on edge without knowing. I tried doing half caf but that didn't help as much as just not consuming.
There’s a book called Secret Testosterone Nexus of Evolution, and it dives into everything; nutrition, training, sleep, and mental focus. It’s the real deal, my life hasn’t been the same since.
THANK YOU! Dr. Andrew Huberman! You are the best scientist, teacher, and podcaster in the world (seriously). The Huberman lab podcast quickly became my favorite; now I can't live without it! Thank you for creating this podcast!!! (:
Thanks Andrew! Here are some notes that I took on key findings from the video: 1. L-tyrosine (found in meats, nuts) is precursor to dopamine, affecting motivation and mood 2. Omega-3 to omega-6 ratio significantly impacts depression; 1000mg EPA shown as effective as 20mg Prozac 3. Gut microbiome influences mood through: -Altering gut environment conditions -Affecting neurotransmitter signaling -Impacting immune function
It's interesting and deeply humbling how, the more science advances, the more it finds out the nitty gritty details of what old wisdom already knew (in things like Ayurveda, TCM, etc.)
So shall we reflect on this as GOD speaks in the Quran : “ and verily you have only been given a little knowledge” all these fascinating discoveries show how complex and perfectly GOD created us and shaped us. Everything has it’s purpose to the very small detail. To finish with this Vers from the holy Quran: أَفَحَسِبۡتُمۡ أَنَّمَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ عَبَثࣰا وَأَنَّكُمۡ إِلَیۡنَا لَا تُرۡجَعُونَ﴿ ١١٥ ﴾ • Abdul Haleem: Did you think We had created you in vain, and that you would not be brought back to Us?’ Al-Muʾminūn, Vers 115
I'm in my 50s and now a 5 year carnivore, after a lifetime of 'healthy' eating. I am the calmest and most mood stable I've ever been in my life. I watch all the kids with ADHD and anxiety symptoms eating a carb based diet and I'm not surprised.
I felt best on carnivore as well, and luckily red meat is my favourite food, only issue I had was that heavy resistance training with no carbs is a bad time. Was carnivore for about 2 months before I went back to carbs. I can tell you my dietician wasn't happy about the carnivore diet I was on....
@@mateusz3162we are a biological experiment of 1 so someone’s as you call “anecdotal” evidence may be the thing that has helped the return of health and thriving.
Been eating clean, homemade food, fasting for 18 hours a day, working out 4 times a week, some meditation with gratitude practise. And the focus is off the charts, the clarity is off the charts. Food and workout alone 'fix' your brain clutter by 90%
@megansaunders7244 true. My girlfriend fasts 18 hours everyday and right before periods she switched to a 12 hour eating window. It does not impact her these days even if she fasts around her periods. I think it's her body that's letting her do that though.
A summary in my words: food and mood affect each other in many ways. The brain-gut connection has been explored and popularized, but what hasn't is the process by which they do this. Here, Huberman speaks of one mechanism that regulates our choices: the vagas nerve. The Vagas nerve is in charge of making sure the signals from the brain reach the gut and vice versa. Huberman establishes that emotions don't simply show on our face, but also regulate our behaviour (whether to lean in or lean back, to avoid or to attempt)
Well explained! I used to find I could eat anything. Since covid ive had fatigue and also developed gut issues. I find eating more protein, especially for breakfast and lunch helps. I'm still experimenting. I don't eat meat though; I eat lots of tofu, tempeh and other plant based protein and fat.
Your final comments about a type of placebo effect: I remember a study that Dr David Hamilton (Scotland) mentioned that found that people who actually KNEW they were taking a placebo also had improved pain relief, which is fascinating.
This is such an insightful video! It’s fascinating how much of a connection there is between what we eat and how we feel. Understanding the impact of nutrients on our mood could really change how we approach mental health. We all agree that food plays such a big role in our emotional well-being Our company has been around for a while, but we’re still not well-known. Every subscribe truly means a lot to us-thank you for your support
This is a very important video...processed sugar products always put me in a bad mood after a couple hours...and things like a bag of chips will always make me sluggish on my runs the next day and make me prone to injury
I can't always hit high intensities like I want too. I've been getting into running longer distances, and I'm not sore, but my legs feel like lead- somedays I just can't go for long or hard even though I want to and it's frustrating. Am I overtraining, how do I know? Also can you do an episode that goes over how to become a morning exercise-r? I tend to workout at night but am noticing in college, that after school/work/studying, I am exhausted by the time I get to my workout!
I recently shifted from keto to quasi- carnivore due to a prediabetes diagnosis. It took at least one month for my GI tract to make this adjustment. I am also taking l-tyrosine 2x daily as a supplement. This has affected dreams which unexpectedly became erotic. At age 82, I’m not sure if I am amazed or entertained by this development!
In south India we eat a lot of fermented foods. The cuisine has been appropriate to the weather and local produce. Unfortunately we have started aping the west and changed our food habits
Thank you Dr. Huberman for this information plus making it so easy to understand. Like I felt that I can connect dots and reason why. Absolutely loved the content. I will re-listen to ensure that I retain this info. Thank you once again to you and your entire team.
Great episode...so interesting and leaves me thinking there is still so much we don't know about regarding the brains relationship with the rest of our body.
I took l-tyrosine 500 mg in supplements for 4 months, one tablet, a break of 3 months. Then 2-3 tablets for 2 months in a row. Is this enough to disrupt the dopamine pathways? please someone
I think a Tibetan bell could help. Ringing the bell throughout the day is very beneficial for the mind and body through healing vibrations. Just an idea.
Excellent thank you Meat based Keto was amazing for my mood and energy levels but I found it hard to eat enough as although I like meat the volume required was well out of my comfort zone

I imagine it will be a bit challenging because I can't fins much info about it anywhere, but it would be so good to know
I think it’s fascinating that Oriental Medicine deduced that nutrition and herbs impacted the body, mind, and spirit over 3,000 years ago. Our Western Medicine is finally catching up to what they have been practicing for many generations.

In your opinion, is it possible that our ancestry would affect how our bodies absorb nutrients. For example, if someone has Japanese ancestry, their body would do better gaining nutrition from a rice, soy, and fish diet, then say a person with Native American of central plains would? And, would someone of multiple ethnicities benefit or be harmed with different diets?
Saturday Evening Thoughts Would love to hear podcast episodes about •Different modalities of learning. Visual, Auditory, Reading, Writing, Kinesthetic. I work with the San Diego Intl Film Festival and we have a FOCUS in Impact Education program. It has been interesting to hear student responses to learning via visual storytelling in addition to the modalities in which they are learning in the classroom. •Hyperalgesia- Specifically how prescription pain medication can cause Hyperalgesia and how medical professionals are treating it and educating their patients about it. (I’ve had two brain surgeries and have personal experience with this.) •The episode with Dr. Brian Keating made me think of brilliance and how often it co-occurs with mental illness. Depression, anxiety, ADD, mania, bipolar, schizophrenia, addiction, etc. Some of the most brilliant people I know struggle inwardly.
In relationship to food resulting in brain fog and mood swings. I was never diagnosed with PKU. However, I feel symptoms point in that direction. Does anyone know what the easiest route for testing be?
A great interview would be Dr. Stephen S Ilardi , Department of Psychology, University of Kansas. - Omega 3 /EPA supplementation plus... - outstanding results.
23:30 However, if you suspect that you're oeprating on a degraded microbiota (ex. inflammatory bowel disease), it might be a good idea to adopt a "saturating approach" with respect to probiotics (i e. all commercially available species and strains) as an intempt to restaure the microbiota. Just provide as much diveristy as you can, nature will order things. It's been 4 months I totally silenced an ulcerative colitis going wrong with a combination of probiotics, fermented foods, reverse osmosis (see episode on microplastics) and removal of ultra processed foods. The true definition of what Andrew calls "science based tools for everyday life". Thank you. 🙌🏻
i have IBS as well and not sure that all these fermented foods would work well for me. could you please clarify what exactly was your approach in managing your condition?
Over the summer of 2024, I stopped eating all grains and went into a calorie deficit, and I swear I became hypomanic. I was extremely energetic, endlessly creative and was not sleeping more than 5/6 hours a night. This lasted only one week, but it was incredible.
This is why I do intermittent fasting. I stay away from refined carbs, sugar, GMOs, artificial ingredients, etc., because we really don't need that junk. I consume complex carbs like broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, and more. When I fast throughout the morning, I feel so much better in a healthy state of ketosis and have become very efficient at becoming fat-adapted (using fat as fuel). During my fasting window, I just consume water with electrolytes, especially because I work out very early in the morning. Exemplary knowledge as always, Andrew!
@ I have been doing various forms of fasting for a decade now, so I am very fat-adapted. Working out on an empty stomach actually makes me feel much better. As I mentioned in my previous comment, I drink water with electrolytes to help replenish myself. That's really all I do. I always put my electrolyte powder in a 32 oz tumbler and consume it before, during, and after my workout. Sometimes I do need a little bit more-maybe another 16 oz of electrolyte water-but other than that, I always feel solid after a workout and don't even feel hungry at all. If I do feel hungry, which is very rare at this point, I just consume that last bit of electrolytes as I mentioned before. You will have to experiment with fasting and becoming very efficient in fat adaptation to feel great like I do. If you don't feel good, I would consider making dietary changes by adding more healthy fats to your diet and lowering your carbs to a maximum of 50 grams. In other words, going low-carb. I hope this was helpful!
@ I only buy from the same two brands: Dr. Berg's Electrolyte Powders and LMNT. Sometimes I choose based on the season or how I feel. For example, during winter, I usually buy LMNT. Why? Because I enjoy the chocolate salt flavor. The taste of chocolate really motivates me to get up and go during the colder months. Dr. Berg's Electrolytes are very versatile, but I prefer to have those during autumn, spring, and summer. I understand that these products can be quite expensive, so I can see why they might not be ideal for everyone. However, I am very serious about what goes into my body. I hope this was helpful for you as well!
First things first; thank you for what you do Andrew. Your podcast subject matter and scientific insight are invaluable. I’m wondering if you have any empirical information relevant to antigens and resulting suitability or efficacy of different food stuffs for given individuals? Recently I had a conversation with someone vouching for the blood group diet in their experience. I’ve read some literature relevant to this and figured that a scientist such as yourself with a strong interest in health may have some interesting opinions? Thanks in advance.
So is there a take-away from the vagus nerve's response to amino acids? Like, if sugar gives a signal to your brain that you want more of it, wouldn't it also do this if your food is very nutrient-dense? Or is that a bit of a different signal? I'm a bit confused because my anecdotal experience with all this is that drinking powdered BCAAs/EAAs does seem to blunt an otherwise hard to satiate hunger (and eating nutrient-rich food has been shown to decrease subsequent hunger signals, to a degree. i'm sorry, but if you feed me a boatload of veggies, it'll take a while to get through them, but I'll still be hungry about 20 mins later!) Forever-hungry person looking for ways to control those hunger signals.
I had depression my entire life from my earliest memories. Pretty extremely. I tried a high quality high does omega three fish oil when I was 27, 1000 mg plus plant sterols. My depression lifted on day three of taking them. I’m 46 now and it still hasn’t returned. I took them for quite some time but now I only take them if I notice that I’m not eating much salmon. It changed my life.
love it, thanks for this episode!! by any chance do you have or will an episode about the type of blood and the food is better for that type of blood??
What if Saccharin is in your toothpaste? Could that have a negative impact on the gut? Or no, because you are not swallowing anything? I use Colgate Optic, it keeps your teeth really white!
@ I don’t know, I switched to a natural Primal Organics Unflavored tooth remineralizing toothpaste, and after 4 days my teeth started to ache! Total red flag, never happened to me before. I switched back to Colgate today. I did drink some diluted apple cider vinegar last night, but I’ve done that several times before. Never got tooth pain. So back to Colgate for now.
Has anyone ever had a rash from gluten?? I did all the process of Elimination, allergy panels changing soap laundry soap, recalling everywhere I go and eat and do, it seems to always come back when I eat gluten, it’s a very deep itchy rash and it will pop up anywhere, also I get gut cramps I noticed our food or atleast so of the food I eat is crap, I try to eat good and healthy it’s pretty expensive maybe because I’m cheap lol
I recently read a book in which the topic of fecal transplantation was touched upon. Ge Hong and his "yellow soup" were mentioned here. Successful results in treatment attempts for depression. It would also be interesting to hear a podcast from you about it.
Hey, cld u plz bring Sara Gottfried once again.. It'll be very helpful for everyone.. She has written a book on autoimmune disorder.. women hv more autoimmune disorder than men.. I've lupus, my friend has fibromyalgia, Thanks a lot for this video.. We all love u a lot 😊
To be honest I feel like it's a as above so below. Like your physical and your mental are all connected. I have a small frame. So just a couple of pounds makes a big difference on me. I recently lost 9 lbs and didn't really recognize it but I just been happier recently. And then my boyfriend pointed out that I lost some weight and I really looked at myself. 😍 And also I think maybe it's not that the fat is causing depression, but that your body is under more pressure trying to deal with the extra fat that's in or around your arteries organs Etc
Yes and no adipose tissue leads to excess weight we have to carry around with us which is a result of poor eating habits which results in energy levels its a vicious cycle but if your wondering specifically about depression thats more of a chemical balance in our brains but my experience food and exercise does link together with mood we need to be honest at all points to get an honest answer. Its a journey for sure but we all have to start someday hope this helps. God bless and goodluck
I'm overweight by a 110 lbs. 5'3" woman 44 years old. The weight is draining me in every which way. There is so much information now...I don't know what to follow anymore.

For example, if someone has Japanese ancestry, their body would do better gaining nutrition from a rice, soy, and fish diet, then say a person with Native American of central plains would? And, would someone of multiple ethnicities benefit or be harmed with different diets?
Great video! Have often wondered about the affect of childhood diet on digestion later in life. Should I be eating Doritos as a supplement? XD

Would love to hear podcast episodes about
•Different modalities of learning.
(I’ve had two brain surgeries and have personal experience with this.)
•The episode with Dr.
Thank you sir !!
@HubermanLab I would love to see Dr. B.J.Fogg at your podcast.
What happened the 2nd week!
@Robert1546_Sea - It just dissipated and then was gone. I think I was eating too little food.

Thanks for your 😃
As always, this is very informative and so helpful. Thank you very much.
I workout very early as well. How do you deal with the hunger after a workout?
What brand of electrolytes do you use?
Doc why do I wake up after 3hrs and I’m fresh, I can’t go back to sleep, is this normal?
you’re not stressed or anxious ? If not then you’re a savage 😂
Great episode Professor. Have you considered hosting Dr. Charles Barkley for an ADHD episode?
Man that would be great!

Thanks in advance.
what probiotics do you take
"Full Journey" indeed. Thanks for all you've done.
Thanks.
So is there a take-away from the vagus nerve's response to amino acids? Like, if sugar gives a signal to your brain that you want more of it, wouldn't it also do this if your food is very nutrient-dense? Or is that a bit of a different signal? I'm a bit confused because my anecdotal experience with all this is that drinking powdered BCAAs/EAAs does seem to blunt an otherwise hard to satiate hunger (and eating nutrient-rich food has been shown to decrease subsequent hunger signals, to a degree. i'm sorry, but if you feed me a boatload of veggies, it'll take a while to get through them, but I'll still be hungry about 20 mins later!)
Forever-hungry person looking for ways to control those hunger signals.
It changed my life.
much salon?
@@jose.iciclesalmon, it’s rich in omega-3
@ salmon, I corrected it.
What fish oil specifically did you take or recommend, and what are plant sterols and how much did you take of what brand? Thanks!
@ it was from a company called Purity Products. They were based out of Norway. It was a thousand milligrams.
love it, thanks for this episode!!
by any chance do you have or will an episode about the type of blood and the food is better for that type of blood??
Wait so sucralose doesn’t kill off your microbiome?
What if Saccharin is in your toothpaste? Could that have a negative impact on the gut? Or no, because you are not swallowing anything? I use Colgate Optic, it keeps your teeth really white!
don't use toothpaste, we don't need it
@ I don’t know, I switched to a natural Primal Organics Unflavored tooth remineralizing toothpaste, and after 4 days my teeth started to ache! Total red flag, never happened to me before. I switched back to Colgate today. I did drink some diluted apple cider vinegar last night, but I’ve done that several times before. Never got tooth pain. So back to Colgate for now.
THANK YOU for making a concise version of your presentation! The 'feature-length movie' youtubes just don't fit into my life.

I second this as someone currently in the process of getting an autoimmune diagnosis, but really being symptomatic since I was a teenager 😮
I agree one thing what you eat what you get from that food so you better do research on what you are putting in your body.
Hello hazel eyes, has anyone done research on our eye color making our perspective different? Just popped in my brain. I'm not being obnoxious❤

Does body fat actually cause depression or is it because im just fat?
To be honest I feel like it's a as above so below. Like your physical and your mental are all connected. I have a small frame. So just a couple of pounds makes a big difference on me. I recently lost 9 lbs and didn't really recognize it but I just been happier recently. And then my boyfriend pointed out that I lost some weight and I really looked at myself. 😍
And also I think maybe it's not that the fat is causing depression, but that your body is under more pressure trying to deal with the extra fat that's in or around your arteries organs Etc
@@FaithResurgegood point! I have a petite frame and just how uncomfortable gaining some weight feels on my body and doing active things.
