Hi, Love. I do not know if anyone has mentioned this but on Amazon page from your browser you can remove your adds from your device in your settings, you go to content and device, find your device and there you can remove your ads. Also, you can remove the swipe to unlock feature on the settings of your device. Another thing that might improve your experience with the oasis is by inverting your buttons. If the button on top feels more comfortable to turn the page to the next one you can change which one will forward or backwards the pages. Hope this helped ✨️
I have had my oasis for 4 months and the battery life gets much better. I think it’s indexing and configuring for the first few weeks. It helps to use airplane mode. Also, you can ask Amazon to switch your ads off and they might not even charge you to do it. I love my oasis and find it comfortable to hold. My case front folds in half and tucks behind it and gives me a nice balanced hold. The buttons are in just the right place for me. I use mine a lot and love the automatic light changes. I can read it in bed without keeping my husband awake and I use it for audio books took. Sorry you didn’t love yours.

Hi, Gina 😼 I can also just tap or press the left or right edges of my paperwhite screen to turn pages. I bought it in 2017. It works anywhere along the edges. No swiping needed except as part of the wake up. Happy reading! ~ Vonda

Hi Gina I have the Kindle Voyage and love it. It’s quite old now but has the backlighting, auto dimming at night and seamless gentle touch controls to turn the page on both sides.
@@GinaStanyerBooks I came here to say this. I know I'm a little late but I just saw the video when I was looking at reviews of the latest paperwhite. The Voyage (While older) is pretty much a modern-day paperwhite with a 6-inch screen and the buttons just the way you like them. Now for the Oasis, you can have ads removed off of any kindle devise after the fact for $20. I think there's a button for it and everything. Or you can follow the trick someone recommended and try to get customer service to remove them for free. As for the battery life, this is the primary reason I don't like Oasis. There is a way to get more battery life than any other kindle...but you have to buy an expensive cover that is supposed to go with it. Then the battery supposedly lasts over 3 months. Personally, I don't like having to pay more and use a cover I might not like the feel of. You can find aftermarket voyages though. I recommend you look into it...or wait until they release whatever comes after Oasis likely this fall. I hope you find the perfect reader soon.
The Kindle keyboard is my favorite Kindle that I’ve ever owned, so I can agree with everything you said about it. Not sure which Oasis you own I have oasis 3 2019- and I love it. However it would be nice they would let us take deactivate the swiping without the rest of the screen. But I love the buttons I love everything about the the reading experience and the hardware. I do wish they would improve on the collections and the audio part of it. I really want my list back under collections. I don’t regret my decision to buy an oasis. My advice to anybody thinking about buying An e reader is that you should watch at least 20 reviews and get different viewpoints from different people. We are all different and there’s gonna be different things we all like about e readers. Thanks for taking the time to share with us your opinion
I have the Oasis and love it. My only complaint would be the battery life. For it being the "elite" model it should have a much better battery life. The turn button is a must for me so I will not get anything new unless it has that option. Thanks for the video.
I totally agree. Thee battery life seems to have gotten a smidge better as my Oasis has settled in, but I still cannot go for a full week (or more!) like I used to be able to do on my old Kindle. It's so odd that they didn't do a better job with this.
Hi Gina this is an update from 2 months ago. Today I ordered and received my first Paperwhite Kindle from Prime Day! Tomorrow my case will arrive. I’m so excited to use it and it comes with free books too. This will come in handy when I read a 700 page book. 😊
I just got my new kindle paper white signature today. I can’t wait to use it. The only reason why I upgraded was the prime day deal and the warm light. I also like that it uses web c so one cable to charge all my devices.

Hi Gina , Thanks for the review. I agree with you , I like the Paperwhite more than the Oasis. I have both . I don’t like the lopsided back on it. For the ads, you can turn them off . I think it costs an extra $20 to do that. For the turn the page buttons , you can set them backwards. The way they’re set seemed weird to me, so you can flip them around so they work backwards. That’s listed in the setting area . Also, the battery life isn’t as good. , I don’t think. Do you keep it set on airplane mode ? That helps a little. I’d say I have to charge mine once a week or so. Anyhow, I agree with you. If both my devices wear out, I’ll go back to a Paperwhite. The only advantage I see to the Oasis is that it’s faster and the screen is a bit clearer. Other than that, Paperwhite wins.
Thanks Julie! I did switch around the buttons, and that is a little better. I keep forgetting to put it on airplane mode though, that is a great idea. I'm sort of used to the ads now - since they're just book covers I just skip right past them.
Thanks this is helpful. I still have a Kindle with buttons and keyboard. I am thinking of upgrading. I am so used to reading on the Kindle app on my phone that I swipe or touch the Kindle screen and expect it to do something. So the Paperwhite seems like the right choice for me.
Hi Christine, the one thing I miss about my old first gen Kindle is those lovely wide page turn buttons! But if you like the app and are used to flipping the pages that way I think you will love the new Paperwhite!
When Craig and I adopted our kids, we got rid of a lot of books, and he got me a Kindle. I have so many books on that thing, especially all my classics. It's nice not to need dedicated spaces for books, but I do really prefer reading an actual book.
Hi Janet, I do love my Kindle - especially for those big chunky classics. I find those big books so difficult to read/hold on paper. I probably read 50% on my Kindle and 50% paper (but I do find myself reaching for my Kindle more and more often...)

I'm an avid reader too and I can tell that having a Kindle changed my life, only the owners of Kindles like you will understand me, it's the best purchase I've ever made, and because I love my Kindle so much and I appreciate videos like yours. I had an Oasis and the battery life got me down so much that I ended up buying another Paperwhite instead. My advice would be to send it back. You should be within your rights to do that, especially if you’re dissatisfied with the battery life (which I think is worse than advertised). The latest version of the Paperwhite is really excellent. Bigger screen and lovely to use.
I agree - I think the the say the battery will last 28 hours, but there is NO way that is true. I'm glad that you like the newer paperwhite - maybe I'll start a tech collection :)
Really glad that you reviewed this Kindle, Gina! I don't think you're being fussy. I would find all of those features annoying, too, especially the placement of the buttons and battery life. Ugh. But, that green cover is brilliant and fun! :D
Thanks for the thoughtful comparison. I'm still using and loving the Kindle versions with keyboards. I was pondering if it was time to upgrade to an Oasis. (Now thinking, "No.") Frankly, I can't image using a version without buttons that I just instinctively press without interrupting my reading or even being aware I'm doing it. The other thing about the Kindles with keyboards is that I, too, read in bed and I tend to just rest the Kindle on my body while I read. With the extra room of the keyboard at the bottom, your body doesn't obstruct the screen.
I totally agree about the buttons. I have gotten more used to the Oasis buttons, but I still don't love them. I just don't understand why they don't just keep them the way they were on the originals!
You can just tap the right or left edges on the Oasis to turn the pages. You don`t have to swipe. I just got one because I wanted a bigger screen. You can do the same on the paperwhite. I have an older paperwhite, too.
I got the Paperwhite over black Friday last year and LOVE it, even though I sometimes only pick it up a few times a week, SO much better than reading on my iPad. This was the first eink in my family and my brother liked it well enough he just got one during Prime Day. I got a "kids" one so it had a cover but I took it off to put a pop socket on after a few months to hold easier, but now I need to make a sleeve for it to prevent further scratches (I ended up with some mysterious ones that aren't bad but are noticable in bright lighting).

I’m a long time Kindle user since 2008. My previous Kindle was a 2018 Oasis, but I now have a Paper White Signature Edition. Overall, I agree, it’s a better deal. The battery life on the Oasis is not as good as others. You can pay to remove the Ads. $20, I think. I couldn’t tolerate Ads.

Thanks. This is very helpful. I have an older Paperwhite and starting to have charging issues so looking around to know what I might like to get if it dies. One thing I discovered on my Paperwhite that you can tap instead of swipe if you like. Not sure if this applies to all versions. I didn’t know for a long time!
I also prefer using the buttons to turn pages and dislike swiping. So I fully understand you, it's not ridiculous at all. Some people will say that you can simply touch the screen, you don't have to swipe to turn pages. That would be an obvious answer, but the thing is that I love locking the screen to avoid accidental touches. So I have to swipe if I get a Paperwhite 2021. I'm hoping that I'll adapt to it or maybe get over the need to lock the screen. I think swiping is just a very unpleasent movement to perform over and over again, while pressing a button or touching the screen is just fine. I had to return my Oasis due to an e-ink spot that wouldn't go away from the screen and felt discouraged to get a new one. It was a frustrating experience. I'm starting to feel motivated to get a Paperwhite 2021, but I'm hoping they send me a flawless unit. Otherwise I'm returning it again and god knows if I'll ever own a working Kindle. I also have an old Kindle that died on me, with lots of buttons on it. It's a gen 3 unit. I watched the whole video and I fully understand all of your complains. Some of them are not a problem to me, like the buttons placement or size, maybe because I have bigger hands. However, I'm also a user very sensitive to details that are hardly even mentioned in the reviews out there, so I get you. Yes! Someone who finally complains about accidental swiping! 😂 I hate that too. And, yes, I thought about this too: if they added buttons to the Paperwhite, it would be a near perfect device. But they are probably saving that feature to Oasis 4, which is a bummer. I also hated the short battery life in the Oasis. So I'm probably giving up on the Oasis tear, since I don't expect the Oasis 4 to have a better battery life than Paperwhite 5 with all the feature it will have, like the 25 or more LEDs.
I want to buy one of these on Prime day tomorrow. I went to a local store to check them out. I love the way the Oasis feels in the hand. It is so balanced plus the buttons. However the Oasis screen had a lot of ghosting, like screen burn in, and the contrast didn't seem as good as the Paperwhite. The blacks on the Paperwhite looked darker while the Oasis screen looked washed out. They had them in some sort of demo mode so I couldn't play with brightness settings and the store lighting was very bright. Still not sure which to get.
I know, I feel exactly the same way. I've gotten used to the Oasis, and I do really like having page turn buttons (although I'm still not totally liking the placement and size of these), but the device is so dang expensive if you don't LOVE it! I haven't noticed any issues with the contrast, and it does have a lot of ability to change the warmth of the screen in addition to the brightness, which is nice. I haven't noticed any ghosting.

If somebody hasn't already posted you can call Amazon customer service and ask them to remove the ads and they will, they have too. I'd didn't believe it either until I did it on a hand me down fire. They will remove them.
If the Paperwhite is anything like the basic White, no ads and no fingerprints model I've recently bought to replace my trusty 11 year old 4th Gen, (I miss the physical buttons!) which I've just sold on eBay, then there's no need to "swipe" to page turn. The merest "tap" anywhere, just to the right of the left hand side of the Screen will advance the pages, which is great for left handers like me who don't want to have to keep reaching over to the right hand side of the screen to page turn! So far as the built in light is concerned, mine is set to "off" unless I have a power cut, or I find myself, as I did the other week, in the dark when my car broke down. For bedtime reading, I much prefer reading by lamplight! 😉📚
I did the same thing where I upversioned from a paperwhite to an oasis, but I think I've had a better experience with mine than you have. I'm not sure if there is a setting you can change on the device, but I don't have to swipe my screen to unlock it, I just press the power button. The warmth lighting was a game changer for me. I don't like the intensely blue lighting on my paperwhite, especially if I'm reading in a dark setting. I did notice that it doesn't hold a good charge, but I usually keep it in airplane mode which seems to help with that.
Oh interesting, I’ll search in settings for that (it’s not that annoying). I do agree with you about the warm lighting - and it auto adjusts which is nice.

I'd buy the cheapest Paperwhite. I prefer it to reading on my phone - it's nice to have a slightly larger screen plus I like the lighting - seems easier on the eyes to me.
@@neiltaylor513 I agree with you. My eyes are still recovering from a concussion event in early December, possibly nerve damage; I will see a specialist in mid-April.
@@lindysmagpiereads if you enjoy reading but need a e-reader definitely go for a kindle type one. They are a lot better, with working from home (due to covid) and spending more time closer to computer I now have to have eye drops every night to stop them drying out, I try ensure if reading do it on a kindle then iPad, as it is a softer more natural light :-)
@@neiltaylor513 I assume you’re talking about an e-ink Kindle (as opposed to the tablet Kindle Fire). One of the main reasons that I want an iPad is for reading comics, so I want colour. Does e-ink come in colour now? I am currently using my phone to film and edit my Booktube videos and I think it would be easier on an iPad.
I'm disappointed in the oasis as well - I just 'knew' I 'needed' one but the size on that edge is bulky and the buttons I wish it had a couple more placed. like you, I want the paperwhite with some buttons. I once again found an older video - I was looking to see if you had a video on Georgette Heyer books as I came across one of hers while browsing and happened to see one on your shelf in this video LOL!
I’ve only had my paperwhite since September, but I can “tap” with my thumb on the screen, rather than swiping (so it’s kind of like a “button”) You might want to see if tapping works on your model.
I would try the brand new Paperwhite were I you. Its absolutely WONDERFUL and the battery lasts for weeks! I'm so happy with it! Its one of my favorite possessions! :D
You can get the ads removed if you log into your account on the website. It’s a $20 fee. They sometimes will even do it for free if you talk to support through the chat.
How disappointing. I’m so glad you made this video. I’ve been coveting an oasis because I also miss my Kindle buttons soooo much! The original Kindle and the model that came after the keyboard one which also had buttons on both sides were perfectly designed and just lacking a backlight. I love the backlight though and if I had to choose between that feature and buttons, the paper white wins out but not ergonomically. You’ve just saved me some money Gina - thanks for this!
Yeah, the buttons on the Oasis are not all I'd hoped and dreamed. I loved the buttons on my old first gen! I HAVE to have the backlight, that is the most important feature to me, so I can live with everything else.
@@GinaStanyerBooks I love the Oasis. I did have a Paperwhite but I found it incredibly uncomfortable to hold as I tend to use the side rather than the bottom and the Paperwhite bezels are too thin. The Oasis is gorgeous - out of a case.
Lazy days are the best! It's a pity the Oasis isn't as good as the Paperwhite. It's interesting to see the differences of the two and find one you prefer. I think I'd probably pick the Paperwhite too.

Hi Gina, stumbled upon your channel today. Firstly, love your voice! I also have an Oasis and love my device, and I am so sorry you are not enjoying it. Just a note - have you tried holding it by the ridge, instead of having your pinky at the bottom? That works for me -- the ridge rests against my palm and makes holding the Kindle much easier -- for hours even. I actually use it without a cover purely to use the ridge. As many others have pointed out, you can get the ads removed for $20 (or even for free if you are lucky) if you speak to Amazon CS. Strange they missed telling you that! Honestly, getting an ad version after spending this much on an e-reader seems absurd to me. About the buttons, if you check Settings, you should be able to reverse them so that the bottom button goes to the next page for you. Hope it helps! Alternately, you can check out the new Paperwhite - if the buttons are not working. The new PW5 is probably as good or even better than the Oasis (as per previous PW users). Happy reading.

This has worked for me. Even if it doesn’t, you can pay $20 to have the ads removed. Once you remove the ads, you won’t have to swipe to unlock. They do that with ads so that you’ll actually look at the ads.
Great video Gina. I have a Fire Tablet as it's the only kindle that supports text to speech when I read e books. Unfortunately I 3 stared Daddy Long Legs. Hopefully I like The Family from One End Street better. Currently reading a Mary Stewart The Stormy Petrel.

I'm holding out for an Amazon or Kobo color e-Ink reader so I'm not upgrading anytime soon (unfortunately I'm not a tablet reader as I find the display strains my eyes). I want to buy a Kindle Paperwhite. What's the difference between 8 GB and 32 GB besides the price? Is it hard to set up? When you buy books how long do they stay on your Kindle? I think I would like one without ads. Reading with a Kindle would be a whole new world for me. I'll let you know when I get one.
It was super easy to set up. Just a few clicks. You sync it right to your Amazon account so books automatically get put on your Kindle. Once you download them they stay on your Kindle until your remove them (they can live in the cloud). I don't remember how much storage I got on mine, but I don't think I'll ever fill that thing up.... I love it!
I'm sorry you're not enjoying your Oasis! I really like mine - I like the buttons and the thicker side does help me hold it, but of course everybody's hand and way of holding it is different. Having ads doesn't bother me either since I've always had ads on my Kindles. I'm cheap and always go for the less expensive option, LOL. I go back and forth between using my older Kindle Paperwhite and the Oasis. One nice thing about the Oasis is that you can plug in an earbud and listen to audiobooks on it, which I couldn't on my Paperwhite. (Though maybe that has changed in more recent Paperwhites. Mine is several years old.)
I have a 10th generation Paperwhite. You can swipe, but I never do. All you have to do is tap the edge of the page to turn. There's no particular spot on the screen, just use your thumb and tap. The page turns.
Thanks for this comprehensive chat. I can see that the oasis is not for me. I love the paperwhite and though I’m not crazy about the interface of the software, I love the size and convenience. The green cover is lovely though!
I've heard others not liking the new Kindle interface but I never noticed any change (maybe mine didn't update automatically). My green cover is the best thing about the Oasis!
I also hold my Paperwhite like you do with the cover. But instead of tapping a button on the side I just tap the screen on the right side on the screen with my thumb and then it turns page forward and on the left side it turn Pages back
The battery life of oasis is too bad, I agree- from 100% to 50% for 3 days. I have also paperwhite 11 gen and I can use it without charging about month or more. And one more problem: on the oasis the top button wobble. But oasis looks great.
Although I have two Paperwhites (2 and 3) I bought a Kobo Libra 2 partly because it's cheaper than the Oasis but also I just fell in love with it when I saw it. From all you've said, and from what I've read on mobileread, the Libra 2 is much better than the Oasis: better screen, better firmware, and more adjustable with the use of patches. The Kobo Libra 2 or Kindle Paperwhite 5 are probably the best none- 6" readers right now.
I agree! I bought the Oasis 7 mo ago. I regret it. I’m going to try to sell it for half price. I have a Voyage, which was the top tier model before Oasis. It is Paperwhite size and has “haptic-type buttons.” The “buttons” don’t protrude, you can “feel” the smooth buttons give feedback when pressed. They’re on both sides. The back has a rubbery-velvety smooth feel that is beveled (symmetrically! I too dislike the fat/thin design of Oasis). Yesterday I bought the new Paperwhite Signature Edition for $102 by combining their Prime Day 29% off & cash back bonus Prime Day promotions. I didn’t opt to trade, even though trade ins get you some cash value & additional 20% off of new Kindle & can be stacked with Prime Day discount). I think I can get more value selling Oasis. I will not part with my Voyage! I’m a 2 Kindle house too & I’m hanging on to my 2015 Kindle Voyage until it dies on me! (Heartwarming story: I lost it a couple of years ago in an airport. I was so disappointed that Amazon no longer sold the model, having replaced it with the Oasis. I used my old original Kindle until 6 months later, my Voyage was returned!! The president/owner of massage chair company found I had left it on one of his airport lounge massage chairs. He kept calling Amazon until a representative agreed to call me and give me his number. Amazon policy doesn’t allow for returning lost Kindles or connecting owners to finders, if you will. He persisted and finally a rep had the heart to call me “unofficially” to give me the phone number of my hero!)

Thanks for this, since I've been considering getting an Oasis. I've had my Paperwhite for years, and I'd love to switch swiping for buttons, but it never seemed enough of a reason to update. Then Amazon did one of their software "upgrades" on the Paperwhite, which I hate with a passion, and you can't opt out of (according to tech support, who I contacted). The new interface is clunky and far worse than it was, so I'm thinking about changing devices. The Oasis may not be the way to go for me. If they'd put the software back the way it was, and add a couple of buttons for page-turning, my Paperwhite would be perfect.
I was hoping that the Oasis would be my dream device, but it's so 'off'. The button placement is weird, the shape is weird, and the battery life is terrible! I totally agree, I just wish they'd do a paperwhite with page buttons. I wonder now if my paperwhite OS has been updated - I don't remember that.

Also, you can ask Amazon to switch your ads off and they might not even charge you to do it. I love my oasis and find it comfortable to hold. My case front folds in half and tucks behind it and gives me a nice balanced hold. The buttons are in just the right place for me. I use mine a lot and love the automatic light changes. I can read it in bed without keeping my husband awake and I use it for audio books took. Sorry you didn’t love yours.

Hi Gina I have the Kindle Voyage and love it. It’s quite old now but has the backlighting, auto dimming at night and seamless gentle touch controls to turn the page on both sides.

@@GinaStanyerBooks I came here to say this. I know I'm a little late but I just saw the video when I was looking at reviews of the latest paperwhite. The Voyage (While older) is pretty much a modern-day paperwhite with a 6-inch screen and the buttons just the way you like them. Now for the Oasis, you can have ads removed off of any kindle devise after the fact for $20. I think there's a button for it and everything. Or you can follow the trick someone recommended and try to get customer service to remove them for free. As for the battery life, this is the primary reason I don't like Oasis. There is a way to get more battery life than any other kindle...but you have to buy an expensive cover that is supposed to go with it. Then the battery supposedly lasts over 3 months. Personally, I don't like having to pay more and use a cover I might not like the feel of. You can find aftermarket voyages though. I recommend you look into it...or wait until they release whatever comes after Oasis likely this fall. I hope you find the perfect reader soon.
You can swap the button functions on the Oasis in the menu.

The Kindle keyboard is my favorite Kindle that I’ve ever owned, so I can agree with everything you said about it. Not sure which Oasis you own I have oasis 3 2019- and I love it. However it would be nice they would let us take deactivate the swiping without the rest of the screen. But I love the buttons I love everything about the the reading experience and the hardware. I do wish they would improve on the collections and the audio part of it. I really want my list back under collections. I don’t regret my decision to buy an oasis. My advice to anybody thinking about buying An e reader is that you should watch at least 20 reviews and get different viewpoints from different people. We are all different and there’s gonna be different things we all like about e readers. Thanks for taking the time to share with us your opinion
I have the Oasis and love it. My only complaint would be the battery life. For it being the "elite" model it should have a much better battery life. The turn button is a must for me so I will not get anything new unless it has that option. Thanks for the video.
I totally agree. Thee battery life seems to have gotten a smidge better as my Oasis has settled in, but I still cannot go for a full week (or more!) like I used to be able to do on my old Kindle. It's so odd that they didn't do a better job with this.

Hi Gina this is an update from 2 months ago. Today I ordered and received my first Paperwhite Kindle from Prime Day! Tomorrow my case will arrive. I’m so excited to use it and it comes with free books too. This will come in handy when I read a 700 page book. 😊

I just got my new kindle paper white signature today. I can’t wait to use it. The only reason why I upgraded was the prime day deal and the warm light. I also like that it uses web c so one cable to charge all my devices.

For the ads, you can turn them off . I think it costs an extra $20 to do that.
For the turn the page buttons , you can set them backwards. The way they’re set seemed weird to me, so you can flip them around so they work backwards. That’s listed in the setting area .
Also, the battery life isn’t as good. , I don’t think. Do you keep it set on airplane mode ? That helps a little. I’d say I have to charge mine once a week or so.
Anyhow, I agree with you. If both my devices wear out, I’ll go back to a Paperwhite.
The only advantage I see to the Oasis is that it’s faster and the screen is a bit clearer. Other than that, Paperwhite wins.

Thanks this is helpful. I still have a Kindle with buttons and keyboard. I am thinking of upgrading. I am so used to reading on the Kindle app on my phone that I swipe or touch the Kindle screen and expect it to do something. So the Paperwhite seems like the right choice for me.
Hi Christine, the one thing I miss about my old first gen Kindle is those lovely wide page turn buttons! But if you like the app and are used to flipping the pages that way I think you will love the new Paperwhite!
When Craig and I adopted our kids, we got rid of a lot of books, and he got me a Kindle. I have so many books on that thing, especially all my classics. It's nice not to need dedicated spaces for books, but I do really prefer reading an actual book.
Hi Janet, I do love my Kindle - especially for those big chunky classics. I find those big books so difficult to read/hold on paper. I probably read 50% on my Kindle and 50% paper (but I do find myself reaching for my Kindle more and more often...)

You can call or chat with Amazon and they may be nice and take the ads off for you and then you can turn the book covers on.
I had an Oasis and the battery life got me down so much that I ended up buying another Paperwhite instead. My advice would be to send it back. You should be within your rights to do that, especially if you’re dissatisfied with the battery life (which I think is worse than advertised). The latest version of the Paperwhite is really excellent. Bigger screen and lovely to use.
I agree - I think the the say the battery will last 28 hours, but there is NO way that is true. I'm glad that you like the newer paperwhite - maybe I'll start a tech collection :)

Thanks for the thoughtful comparison. I'm still using and loving the Kindle versions with keyboards. I was pondering if it was time to upgrade to an Oasis. (Now thinking, "No.") Frankly, I can't image using a version without buttons that I just instinctively press without interrupting my reading or even being aware I'm doing it.
The other thing about the Kindles with keyboards is that I, too, read in bed and I tend to just rest the Kindle on my body while I read. With the extra room of the keyboard at the bottom, your body doesn't obstruct the screen.
I totally agree about the buttons. I have gotten more used to the Oasis buttons, but I still don't love them. I just don't understand why they don't just keep them the way they were on the originals!
You can just tap the right or left edges on the Oasis to turn the pages. You don`t have to swipe. I just got one because I wanted a bigger screen. You can do the same on the paperwhite. I have an older paperwhite, too.

I got the Paperwhite over black Friday last year and LOVE it, even though I sometimes only pick it up a few times a week, SO much better than reading on my iPad. This was the first eink in my family and my brother liked it well enough he just got one during Prime Day.
I got a "kids" one so it had a cover but I took it off to put a pop socket on after a few months to hold easier, but now I need to make a sleeve for it to prevent further scratches (I ended up with some mysterious ones that aren't bad but are noticable in bright lighting).

I’m a long time Kindle user since 2008. My previous Kindle was a 2018 Oasis, but I now have a Paper White Signature Edition. Overall, I agree, it’s a better deal. The battery life on the Oasis is not as good as others. You can pay to remove the Ads. $20, I think. I couldn’t tolerate Ads.
Yeah, the ads bothered me in the beginning, but I've gotten used to them - since they are just book covers it's not bad. I just swipe past them.

If my Paperwhite and Oasis both died, I'd replace them with another Paperwhite. It's a really great little device.

I also prefer using the buttons to turn pages and dislike swiping. So I fully understand you, it's not ridiculous at all.
Some people will say that you can simply touch the screen, you don't have to swipe to turn pages. That would be an obvious answer, but the thing is that I love locking the screen to avoid accidental touches. So I have to swipe if I get a Paperwhite 2021. I'm hoping that I'll adapt to it or maybe get over the need to lock the screen.
I think swiping is just a very unpleasent movement to perform over and over again, while pressing a button or touching the screen is just fine.
I had to return my Oasis due to an e-ink spot that wouldn't go away from the screen and felt discouraged to get a new one. It was a frustrating experience.
I'm starting to feel motivated to get a Paperwhite 2021, but I'm hoping they send me a flawless unit. Otherwise I'm returning it again and god knows if I'll ever own a working Kindle.
I also have an old Kindle that died on me, with lots of buttons on it. It's a gen 3 unit.
I watched the whole video and I fully understand all of your complains. Some of them are not a problem to me, like the buttons placement or size, maybe because I have bigger hands. However, I'm also a user very sensitive to details that are hardly even mentioned in the reviews out there, so I get you.
Yes! Someone who finally complains about accidental swiping! 😂 I hate that too. And, yes, I thought about this too: if they added buttons to the Paperwhite, it would be a near perfect device. But they are probably saving that feature to Oasis 4, which is a bummer.
I also hated the short battery life in the Oasis. So I'm probably giving up on the Oasis tear, since I don't expect the Oasis 4 to have a better battery life than Paperwhite 5 with all the feature it will have, like the 25 or more LEDs.
I want to buy one of these on Prime day tomorrow. I went to a local store to check them out. I love the way the Oasis feels in the hand. It is so balanced plus the buttons. However the Oasis screen had a lot of ghosting, like screen burn in, and the contrast didn't seem as good as the Paperwhite. The blacks on the Paperwhite looked darker while the Oasis screen looked washed out. They had them in some sort of demo mode so I couldn't play with brightness settings and the store lighting was
very bright. Still not sure which to get.
I know, I feel exactly the same way. I've gotten used to the Oasis, and I do really like having page turn buttons (although I'm still not totally liking the placement and size of these), but the device is so dang expensive if you don't LOVE it! I haven't noticed any issues with the contrast, and it does have a lot of ability to change the warmth of the screen in addition to the brightness, which is nice. I haven't noticed any ghosting.

If somebody hasn't already posted you can call Amazon customer service and ask them to remove the ads and they will, they have too. I'd didn't believe it either until I did it on a hand me down fire. They will remove them.
If the Paperwhite is anything like the basic White, no ads and no fingerprints model I've recently bought to replace my trusty 11 year old 4th Gen, (I miss the physical buttons!) which I've just sold on eBay, then there's no need to "swipe" to page turn.
The merest "tap" anywhere, just to the right of the left hand side of the Screen will advance the pages, which is great for left handers like me who don't want to have to keep reaching over to the right hand side of the screen to page turn!
So far as the built in light is concerned, mine is set to "off" unless I have a power cut, or I find myself, as I did the other week, in the dark when my car broke down.
For bedtime reading, I much prefer reading by lamplight! 😉📚
I did the same thing where I upversioned from a paperwhite to an oasis, but I think I've had a better experience with mine than you have. I'm not sure if there is a setting you can change on the device, but I don't have to swipe my screen to unlock it, I just press the power button. The warmth lighting was a game changer for me. I don't like the intensely blue lighting on my paperwhite, especially if I'm reading in a dark setting. I did notice that it doesn't hold a good charge, but I usually keep it in airplane mode which seems to help with that.
Oh interesting, I’ll search in settings for that (it’s not that annoying). I do agree with you about the warm lighting - and it auto adjusts which is nice.

I'd buy the cheapest Paperwhite. I prefer it to reading on my phone - it's nice to have a slightly larger screen plus I like the lighting - seems easier on the eyes to me.

@@lindysmagpiereads if you enjoy reading but need a e-reader definitely go for a kindle type one. They are a lot better, with working from home (due to covid) and spending more time closer to computer I now have to have eye drops every night to stop them drying out, I try ensure if reading do it on a kindle then iPad, as it is a softer more natural light :-)
@@neiltaylor513 I assume you’re talking about an e-ink Kindle (as opposed to the tablet Kindle Fire). One of the main reasons that I want an iPad is for reading comics, so I want colour. Does e-ink come in colour now? I am currently using my phone to film and edit my Booktube videos and I think it would be easier on an iPad.
I'm disappointed in the oasis as well - I just 'knew' I 'needed' one but the size on that edge is bulky and the buttons I wish it had a couple more placed. like you, I want the paperwhite with some buttons. I once again found an older video - I was looking to see if you had a video on Georgette Heyer books as I came across one of hers while browsing and happened to see one on your shelf in this video LOL!

I’ve only had my paperwhite since September, but I can “tap” with my thumb on the screen, rather than swiping (so it’s kind of like a “button”) You might want to see if tapping works on your model.

I would try the brand new Paperwhite were I you. Its absolutely WONDERFUL and the battery lasts for weeks! I'm so happy with it! Its one of my favorite possessions! :D

How disappointing. I’m so glad you made this video. I’ve been coveting an oasis because I also miss my Kindle buttons soooo much! The original Kindle and the model that came after the keyboard one which also had buttons on both sides were perfectly designed and just lacking a backlight. I love the backlight though and if I had to choose between that feature and buttons, the paper white wins out but not ergonomically. You’ve just saved me some money Gina - thanks for this!
Yeah, the buttons on the Oasis are not all I'd hoped and dreamed. I loved the buttons on my old first gen! I HAVE to have the backlight, that is the most important feature to me, so I can live with everything else.
@@GinaStanyerBooks I love the Oasis. I did have a Paperwhite but I found it incredibly uncomfortable to hold as I tend to use the side rather than the bottom and the Paperwhite bezels are too thin. The Oasis is gorgeous - out of a case.
Lazy days are the best! It's a pity the Oasis isn't as good as the Paperwhite. It's interesting to see the differences of the two and find one you prefer. I think I'd probably pick the Paperwhite too.

Hi Gina, stumbled upon your channel today. Firstly, love your voice! I also have an Oasis and love my device, and I am so sorry you are not enjoying it.
Just a note - have you tried holding it by the ridge, instead of having your pinky at the bottom? That works for me -- the ridge rests against my palm and makes holding the Kindle much easier -- for hours even. I actually use it without a cover purely to use the ridge.
As many others have pointed out, you can get the ads removed for $20 (or even for free if you are lucky) if you speak to Amazon CS. Strange they missed telling you that! Honestly, getting an ad version after spending this much on an e-reader seems absurd to me.
About the buttons, if you check Settings, you should be able to reverse them so that the bottom button goes to the next page for you.
Hope it helps! Alternately, you can check out the new Paperwhite - if the buttons are not working. The new PW5 is probably as good or even better than the Oasis (as per previous PW users). Happy reading.

This has worked for me. Even if it doesn’t, you can pay $20 to have the ads removed. Once you remove the ads, you won’t have to swipe to unlock. They do that with ads so that you’ll actually look at the ads.
You can get the ads removed for 20 dollars and the book cover can be enabled. I did it.

I'm holding out for an Amazon or Kobo color e-Ink reader so I'm not upgrading anytime soon (unfortunately I'm not a tablet reader as I find the display strains my eyes). I want to buy a Kindle Paperwhite. What's the difference between 8 GB and 32 GB besides the price? Is it hard to set up? When you buy books how long do they stay on your Kindle? I think I would like one without ads. Reading with a Kindle would be a whole new world for me. I'll let you know when I get one.
It was super easy to set up. Just a few clicks. You sync it right to your Amazon account so books automatically get put on your Kindle. Once you download them they stay on your Kindle until your remove them (they can live in the cloud). I don't remember how much storage I got on mine, but I don't think I'll ever fill that thing up.... I love it!

I'm sorry you're not enjoying your Oasis! I really like mine - I like the buttons and the thicker side does help me hold it, but of course everybody's hand and way of holding it is different. Having ads doesn't bother me either since I've always had ads on my Kindles. I'm cheap and always go for the less expensive option, LOL. I go back and forth between using my older Kindle Paperwhite and the Oasis. One nice thing about the Oasis is that you can plug in an earbud and listen to audiobooks on it, which I couldn't on my Paperwhite. (Though maybe that has changed in more recent Paperwhites. Mine is several years old.)
Ooh, that is interesting about the audio books on Oasis. I don't listen to them very often but that is a definite great perk!
I have a 10th generation Paperwhite. You can swipe, but I never do. All you have to do is tap the edge of the page to turn. There's no particular spot on the screen, just use your thumb and tap. The page turns.

I've heard others not liking the new Kindle interface but I never noticed any change (maybe mine didn't update automatically). My green cover is the best thing about the Oasis!
I also hold my Paperwhite like you do with the cover. But instead of tapping a button on the side I just tap the screen on the right side on the screen with my thumb and then it turns page forward and on the left side it turn Pages back

The battery life of oasis is too bad, I agree- from 100% to 50% for 3 days. I have also paperwhite 11 gen and I can use it without charging about month or more.
And one more problem: on the oasis the top button wobble.

I hold my paper white the same way you do.
Although I have two Paperwhites (2 and 3) I bought a Kobo Libra 2 partly because it's cheaper than the Oasis but also I just fell in love with it when I saw it. From all you've said, and from what I've read on mobileread, the Libra 2 is much better than the Oasis: better screen, better firmware, and more adjustable with the use of patches.
The Kobo Libra 2 or Kindle Paperwhite 5 are probably the best none- 6" readers right now.
I agree! I bought the Oasis 7 mo ago. I regret it. I’m going to try to sell it for half price. I have a Voyage, which was the top tier model before Oasis. It is Paperwhite size and has “haptic-type buttons.” The “buttons” don’t protrude, you can “feel” the smooth buttons give feedback when pressed. They’re on both sides. The back has a rubbery-velvety smooth feel that is beveled (symmetrically! I too dislike the fat/thin design of Oasis).
Yesterday I bought the new Paperwhite Signature Edition for $102 by combining their Prime Day 29% off & cash back bonus Prime Day promotions. I didn’t opt to trade, even though trade ins get you some cash value & additional 20% off of new Kindle & can be stacked with Prime Day discount). I think I can get more value selling Oasis. I will not part with my Voyage! I’m a 2 Kindle house too & I’m hanging on to my 2015 Kindle Voyage until it dies on me! (Heartwarming story: I lost it a couple of years ago in an airport. I was so disappointed that Amazon no longer sold the model, having replaced it with the Oasis. I used my old original Kindle until 6 months later, my Voyage was returned!! Wow it's amazing that you got it back! I must have missed the Voyage, it sounds PERFECT! Those are exactly the types of buttons that I like. I've gotten used to the Oasis, but I don't love it -

I did try that. The buttons are just not in a good spot for me (although I am getting used to it now)

You can remove the Ads
I have yet to buy a kindle! I have an iPad that I use for ebooks.. the downside is that it is shiny. Ads 👎 I didn’t even know they had ads.fusspotty 🤣🤣🤣
I really want an iPad mini, but I like the e- ink readers for books still. It’s so much easier in the eyes IMO.
You can get rid of the adds.
send a message to amazon support they can remove the ads for you. if you ask them politely the do it for free.
I would return the Oasis and keep using the paperwhite.
Hi Gina, I absolutely loved this review because it made me think about my own Oaisis. You're right about the sensitivity of the screen. The ads would drive me absolutely nutty!

Mmmmm, I debated returning the Oasis, but I really don't like to return stuff unless it's defective or I haven't yet used it. I don't mind having two, Greg can use one.

I am getting used to the Kindle Oasis, but I think that I still prefer the Paperwhite. The Oasis is just not worth the extra money for the features. Your English is very good, I would be so nervous leaving comments in a language that I was learning!
Thanks for this, since I've been considering getting an Oasis. I've had my Paperwhite for years, and I'd love to switch swiping for buttons, but it never seemed enough of a reason to update. Then Amazon did one of their software "upgrades" on the Paperwhite, which I hate with a passion, and you can't opt out of (according to tech support, who I contacted). The new interface is clunky and far worse than it was, so I'm thinking about changing devices. The Oasis may not be the way to go for me. If they'd put the software back the way it was, and add a couple of buttons for page-turning, my Paperwhite would be perfect.
I was hoping that the Oasis would be my dream device, but it's so 'off'. The button placement is weird, the shape is weird, and the battery life is terrible! I totally agree, I just wish they'd do a paperwhite with page buttons. I wonder now if my paperwhite OS has been updated - I don't remember that.

Thanks Noah. I think I actually read faster on my Kindle. I really enjoy the reading experience. I do love my paper books though!
