Excellent review of the Signature and your round up comments on the different kindles at the end. Thank you. I have a Paperwhite 7th edition plus an Oasis 9th ed 8gb. I have posted (at amazons cost) my Oasis to Amazon under there trade up offer. I will receive £60 for the Oasis together with 20% discount on a new Kindle. I did not use the Oasis much in fact it stayed at home, I preferred to take the 7th edition with me on my travels. it is smaller and fits very comfortably into jacket pocket or inside pocket. the Oasis I found would not fit into pockets easily. The battery on the 7 lasted much longer than the oasis. In conclusion the new 8gb Paperwhite will suit my needs perfectly, pocketable and I don't need the wireless charging or the auto back light function. I was leaning towards the Signature but your excellent comments made me realise that the entry level is the way to go, plus I can spend the money I will save on more ebooks. David
I recently got a regular Paperwhite. It did not cost me anything as I ‘purchased’ it using my Telco’s reward points :). The last Kindle I bought was a 4th edition purchased in either 2011 or 2012. For the last few years I have been reading eBooks using my iPad. I am enjoying books more on the Kindle as using my iPad meant I was often distracted. I am still on to my first book on my new Kindle but it is Shogun so it is a long book.
I've had the Signature Edition since launch, replacing my elderly Oasis and can only say good things about it. Unlike you, I use the wireless charging exclusively - I just plonk it on the wireless charger and pick it up later on, there's no fiddling with cords or plugs (even say that, USB-C is a huge leap over the old micro-USB plugs). In terms of hand-feel, I use one of the Kindle cases because it has the front flap that protects the screen when I chuck it in a bag etc. The case (cork) also gives me a bit more security in terms of holding the device. I've never once had mine spontaneously reboot - I'm wondering whether yours is down to a problem with your device. Another plus side to the latest Kindles is the speed of the processors - the Oasis I had before was almost unbearably slow in terms of navigating the interface where the Signature edition is so much more responsive.
Yeah I’ve got a case for mine now for when I travel. I do like the fact it switches the device on when you open it. Also completely agree about the processor power. Makes using the device much more pleasant
@@CriminOllyBlog Yes, That is the intent, but it is a great idea for adults. It often goes on sale for less than the cost of a regular Paperwhite, and it has that fantastic warranty. That warranty is worth a bit of cash. The only difference between the models (of the standard paperwhite and the kid's paperwhite) is that the kid's version comes with a FEW pre-installed apps or discounts for some kid's books that Amazon wants to promote. AND they can be deleted. So for the EXACT SAME PRICE, you get a no-questions warranty on breakage for any reason, a case (the black one is very adult-looking). It is a Must Buy for anyone that does not need the Signature edition. I bought the signature edition for the extra storage for audio books but had I found the "kids" bundle, I would have bought that and simply monitored the number of audio books on my device.
@@michaelreed649 and no annoying lock screen ads! The included case cover is not as good as the regular one, which you will need to pay additional 20-30 USD
I wonder why it reboots. I suspect it's updating the software automatically. Does it reboot on its own on [AIRPLANE] mode? The downsides to it for me are: 1. I actually wish it were smaller! 2. Side buttons would be good (like the Nook). 3. Try going back on a big book more than 10 pages and it's a chore. This is part of why I am still not fully vested on e-readers.
I don't think it is updates as seems to be happening too often for that (and I would expect some sort of a notification when it did an update). I like the size, but equally I would LOVE a pocket sized e-ink device that I could read on. I think there are a few options out there but need to look into it more.
Thanks so much for the comparison and your view on the Kindle Paperwhite. I was tempted, but ultimately stuck with my 2018 Paperwhite as I didn't see enough improvements to want me to upgrade. When they come out with a color eInk display though - then I'll reconsider :)
Yeah I am definitely intrigued to see what the next big innovation is. Although I’m not sure I actually have a real need for a colour screen as all I do is read text on mine.
I still have free, old model - has the keyboard. It’s a bit limiting but I’ve only read 2 or 3 books on it. Your advice is welcome though as I’m considering a newer model.
I want to buy one of these on Prime day tomorrow. I went to a local store to check them out. I love the way the Oasis feels in the hand. It is so balanced plus the buttons. However the Oasis screen had a lot of ghosting, like screen burn in, and the contrast didn't seem as good as the Paperwhite. The blacks on the Paperwhite looked darker while the Oasis screen looked washed out. They had them in some sort of demo mode so I couldn't play with brightness settings and the store lighting was very bright. Still not sure which to get.
If you read a lot and don't want to have to charge it every day then I would definitely recommend the Oasis. I don't feel there is much to choose between the screens tbh. Agree that the design of the Oasis is great though.
I bought the 8g kindle pw just couldn't justify the other features . And the 32gb was the only real reason that would have made me buy the signature . I've only got 250 book on mine so a couple thousand left to fill it . I also have a kobo clara hd to fill as well. If I ever get to the stage of running out of space I'll delete books I've already read . And I've had a couple random reboots as well .
FYI, CriminOlly is a fantastic name for your channel. You are clearly well read, so I have a question for you. I am about to go camp on the beach for a week. Do you have any suggestions for camping on a beach in isolation? I am thinking deserted island or some such setting. I have "The Island of Doctor Moreau" on my Kindle (yes, I am embarrassed to admit that I have not read it yet), But would like more books for the trip. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you! I actually haven't read The Island of Dr Moreau! I should really fix that. Other ones that spring to mind - 'The Ruins' by Scott Smith, 'The Beach' by Alex Garland, 'Forgotten Island' by David Sodergren. Maybe throw in some Tarzan too? Or some H Rider Haggard if you fancy something more adventure focused.
Have been a Kindle Basic version owner for 5 years (1 non front lit, 1 front lit) but now although I still prefer the Kindle Store, I use a Kobo Libra 2 now. Calibre with DeDRM is amazingly useful.
That’s useful! I’ve got Calibre and DeDRM but the one thing I haven’t got sorted is the ability to import files in the new Amazon format (which I forget the name of now)
@@CriminOllyBlog I download using my pc from the Kindle site of books i own and they download in the format i mentioned. Calibre and DeDRM has no problem with those. The only place i find the kfx format is on my Kindle itself if i download with the kindle.
I don’t recall any random reboots on my Signature Edition. I’ve had about six months too. For the most part, it’s great, though I do miss my Oasis - except the terrible battery life. I do with Amazon would make a 10” Kindle.
There do seem to be a lot more E-ink devices from other manufacturers with larger or smaller screens, as well as colour and so on. I’d be surprised if Amazon doesn’t try something on those lines before too long.
My problems are the random reboots, it takes multiple taps (2-3x) before an ebook downloads, no ePub book covers in the library, power button on the bottom, and frequent slowdowns when navigating through the UI. Another issue I have is the Paperwhite will download multiple copies of the same ebook. I don't understand why. I have the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. I love the last Kindle Oasis released, but the battery life is horrible. My Oasis drains in 1 day. I wish the Kindle Oasis had USB Type C, better battery life and a rubberized back for grip. It could have a 7.8" screen as well. I have over 6K ebooks on my Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. 6,369 ebooks last check. I love horror books!!!
I’ve not had the issue of multiple copies of a book being downloaded. Agree that having the power button at the bottom is a terrible design choice though. If they can fix the battery life I’d buy a 7.8” rubberised Oasis with USBC in a heartbeat! And I thought I had a lot of books!!!!
I use my tablet if I have to read an ebook, but I prefer to read a physical copy. I had a kindle DX at one time, and it was terrible. I got the DX for my sister because of the large screen and text to voice, but it was too difficult for her to use because of her disability. So I ended up trying to use it, but the page turning was way too slow, and before long the battery would not hold a charge. I probably didn't read a complete book on it before disposing of it. $400 CAN wasted. Since I don't enjoy reading with the kindle app on my tablet, I assume a modern kindle would not be much better. A tablet or kindle would be great on the go, but in the summer I don't have a pocket big enough for my 8 in tablet. So I grab a pocket book when I am going somewhere. I did read ebooks on my phone for a while, but then it would take a year or more to read a book, since I would only read it when out somewhere and had to wait around.
I think you’re the first person I know who owned a DX! I’ve always been intrigued by it because it seemed like a bit of a crazy device. I think you’d find page turns and so on much quicker on a newer kindle
Current Kindles are much faster than the DX. Not sure what happened with your battery, but I still use an ereader from 2011 and the battery still lasts at least a week. Reading on a black and white eink screen is different than reading on a phone or tablet. Closer to a printed page. If you are in a store and see a Kindle or a Kobo, I'd suggest at least checking them out to see how they are.
The auto-brightness needs to be “trained”, switch it on and adjust the brightness under different light conditions and the sensors will learn your particular settings. And in regards to your kindle randomly restarting fortnightly, that is not normal, nor have i heard of anyone else having a similar issue and i frequently visit the kindle subreddit.
Only, I just ordered the KPW SE and before doing so, I asked customer service at Amazon if I could charge it with the adapter. Just like charging the standard Mandel. They told me yes. But I didn’t see on the video a actual outlet on the device to do so. Is it wireless charging only? Or can I actually plug directly into the device to charge it? I’m waiting for it to arrive.
Are you sure you are not accidently knocking the power button with your finger? I've done that many times. And regarding the position of the power button ....
What does Without Kindle Unlimited mean? What does Lockedscreen Ad supported mean? I’m thinking of buying a regular Paperwhite and there are options that I need to choose from.
Hi there. Kindle Unlimited is a subscription service from Amazon that gives you access to free kindle books and audiobooks. The range is limited but there is a lot of good stuff there. You pay a monthly fee but can cancel anytime. You can also add it at any time, so if you’re not sure you want it I would select without for now. Lock Screen ads basically means that when your kindle is not being used Amazon will show ads for books it think you’ll like on the screen (just a static image). It’s not too intrusive but can be a bit annoying.
It was your previous review that convinced me that I needed this iteration of the Kindle in my life! I ordered it for my birthday in April, so I've had it a couple months now and I love it! 📚 I love the screen size on the Paperwhite Signature, too! It's a big difference from my previous Kindle Paperwhite (2017? I think...) and it's much snappier. 😬 How odd that yours is randomly rebooting on you! Is it possibly getting software updates when that happens? I don't know if you've done this and I know you didn't ask for advice, 😆 but I would completely shut it down for a few minutes to see if that makes a difference. Who knows...maybe that'll do the trick. 🤓
Great review!, As always. Regarding the problem that the Kindle restarts by itself did you try to check if is not an update? It will be good to know if this is the issue. I only see that when I was getting updates so that can be the case... If not it will be good that you speak with Amazon to see if is a problem. I do not have the signature edition so I can compare but with my regular paperwhite I only see that it restart when i get an update.
Don't want to be chiming in here 2 months later, but here we are. I was wondering after getting the Paperwhite myself. Do you sometimes hold it with three fingers on the back and the kindle then resting on your little finger on the bottom. If so the power button could be resting on your little finger from time to time and causing it to reboot. Seen another reviewer saying this was an issue for them due to their little finger placement or power button placement, more like.
@@michaelfeehily2297 I can't say that I have that issue maybe because I always use my kindle with a cover. Since it goes in my purse I use the cover to avoid the device to turn on by itself and to protect it from scratches. Maybe that is why I never touch that button by mistake but I totally understand that someone without any cover can get that. Just to clarify I do not use the big leather covers I always search for the slim ones. But I highly recommend to get one if you carry your device around as I do :)
@@karopi ahhh. I only got this kindle the other day so the cover is in the post. So that's where I was coming from (someone without a cover, yet). By the way, great videos. I've found some horror books I'm looking forward to checking out.
@@michaelfeehily2297 I'm pretty sure it's not that because I think I've had it reboot when it's just sitting on a table. That said, the power button placement is ridiculous!
You must have a lemon Oasis or something. My Oasis lasts about a week and a half in between charges with wifi always on. I read on it at least a couple hours a day.
I always have a question regards PW5&PW5S: Will PW5S slowdown if it’s fully loaded? If I remember correctly, the signature-edition has the same RAM just like a regular KP5, so can it really handle that many files (like use more than 75% of the storages space, especially with e-books not audiobooks) on a device? It’s probably a dumb question but I’m just so curious.
I can't see that being a problem. If I understand how these things work correctly, then RAM is only used for active processes. So RAM usage would be identical regardless of how many books are on the device - as would just be the book you actually have open
@@CriminOllyBlog yes that makes sense. It’s just kindle’s operating system sometimes has the weirdest glitches. It’s not a major issue because all I need is to close it for a second and then reopen it, everything will be just fine.
I only own the standard paperwhite and it does reboot at least once every couple of days (that I've seen) my guess would have been some kind of software update but it's happening when I'm scrolling through books looking for something to read?..
David
Thanks David! Glad you found the review useful. Hope you enjoy the new Kindle!
Thanks for the video. I was wondering what kindle to get for a Father’s Day gift and now I know.
Excellent! Glad it was useful
Excellent! Glad you're enjoying it! And yes, Shogun will keep you going a while!
Thanks!
CriminOlly
I have the Oasis and the battery long very well.
Nice review.
The kindle paperwhite kids bundle used to be a good bundle. 2 year, no hassle warranty and a cover ( black is ok).
It often goes on sale.
That's cool! A great way to get kids reading
The downsides to it for me are:
Glad it was helpful!
They had them in some sort of demo mode so I couldn't play with brightness settings and the store lighting was
very bright.
I think you made the right choice with the 8gb version. Sorry to hear you’re getting reboots too though.
I love my Kindle Fire.
The Fire is an excellent device!
I’ve got Calibre and DeDRM but the one thing I haven’t got sorted is the ability to import files in the new Amazon format (which I forget the name of now)
@@CriminOllyBlog Do you mean azw3? And happy to help if I can but not sure what you mean of what the problem is. 🙃

@@CDubya.82 ah that’s helpful! Thank you I’ll give that a try!
Ah that’s interesting, I didn’t know that about the auto brightness, thank you!
Ooh a Kindle video! Here come 2k views easy. You are a clever criminal. It is a great review video, I must admit.
Ha! Thanks Michael
Only,
I just ordered the KPW SE and before doing so, I asked customer service at Amazon if I could charge it with the adapter. Just like charging the standard Mandel. They told me yes. But I didn’t see on the video a actual outlet on the device to do so. Is it wireless charging only? Or can I actually plug directly into the device to charge it? I’m waiting for it to arrive.
* please excuse the typos .
Hi - you can charge it by plugging the cable into the device
Thanks for responding. I got it yesterday and it is simply fantastic! Great videos!
@@gregjo3808 Thank you!
I also struggled getting the battery to last me a day on the Oasis it was awful. I use a bigger font so the bigger screen is better for my situation.
Yeah the battery is terrible
Are you sure you are not accidently knocking the power button with your finger? I've done that many times. And regarding the position of the power button ....
It’s definitely possible!
What does Without Kindle Unlimited mean?
What does Lockedscreen
Ad supported mean?
@@CriminOllyBlog Now I understand. Thank you for explaining it to me.
Probably should also go for the 32GB one if you read a lot of comic books or manga.
Very true!
Ah brilliant that you’re enjoining it! So pleased! I agree the big screen is great.
I haven’t tried that! Maybe I’ll shut it down overnight
I have kindle on my phone and it suits me fine.
Why would I need a $140 kindle when I got one for free?
If you’re happy with using your phone that’s great!
I have the original Oasis and it has crashed in the middle of reading a book recently. It never happened before. I suspect it is a software issue.
Ah that's interesting! It does suggest it's software related so hopefully they can fix it.
My paperwhite 2021 sometimes reboot. Always when I’m lying and holding it with the thumb near the Kindle logo. It is a bad contact on the power nutton
Ah that's interesting, it could be that on mine too
@@CriminOllyBlog In my case, I just moved my thumb a few milimeters and voilá, no more reboots! And thanks for the great channel.
@@ricardias1551 I’ll give that a try. And thank you! Glad you’re enjoying it!
Hi thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it’s done it multiple times in different versions of the software and not just when it was updating.
I've not had any issues with it rebooting - have you considered contacting Amazon?
I haven’t done that yet, but if it keeps happening I probably will
You must have a lemon Oasis or something. My Oasis lasts about a week and a half in between charges with wifi always on. I read on it at least a couple hours a day.
Weird - I have had 2 of them and the battery life was identical
I have two Amazon accounts, had recently switched mine old Kindle 8th Gen to a different account and somehow it cannot show book covers while it’s sleeping, so I figured it’s probably cannot been recognize as the Ad-free version for the other account because of whatever. But just the other night, it decided to randomly restored this function and now every book I’m reading will be shown in the display. My KP5 never showed the rebooting problem that many people experienced with theirs, but it tends to freeze from time to time now I have use more that 50% of the storage space. It’s not a major issue because all I need is to close it for a second and then reopen it, everything will be just fine.
@@jessicamou Yeah I think I've had weird random glitches with all of my Kindles - cover art not showing, occasional freezes and so on
I only own the standard paperwhite and it does reboot at least once every couple of days (that I've seen) my guess would have been some kind of software update but it's happening when I'm scrolling through books looking for something to read?.. So maybe it's a software glitch rather than anything major...
And they are cheaply made, I dropped my 1st one from a small height & the screen cracked, my bad and my new one is in a case..
Yeah I still haven’t got a case for mine but now that I’m commuting again I think I probably need to

8:34 that is absolutely daft, like you say... Like why though? In an eink the light isn't for display it's for seeing, so really shouldn't the algorithm be reversed?
