I visited the pit 3 years ago, the piles of excavated timber that shored up all the hundreds of tunnels dugout by the old timers was impressive in itself. No trees for hundreds of kilometers, all the timber hauled in from the South West of the state 700 km away at least.
Plenty of local timber was used by the old timers , nothing tougher than local silver gimlet for instance. Early days there were several local bush rail lines known as “ woodlines” horse and cart and later trains would bring timber in from the surrounding bush to fuel the condensers to make fresh water before the pipeline form Perth was commissioned. They bought timber in for the mines also. Grew up in kalg and spent a lot of time in the bush. Them old underground workings were all still being worked in the 80’s when the superpit was a scattering of smaller pits and owned by two different companies.
True story the older tailings piles around Kalgoorlie that were processed using older less efficient gold extraction methods still hold economic gold grades and are worth reprocessing when the gold price is right.
Looks like a massive open pit quarry.I used to these things as I formerly worked in a quarry..used to see blasting,loading and hauling process all the way to the crushing plant.But this is extremely insane way to mine a billion dollars of gold..Greetings from Malaysia.

I worked on the construction of the prison in kalgoolie one day we were sitting out the back of the hostel we were living in and the ground and building started to shack I nearly crapped myself I thought it was an earthquake it turned out that they were blasting under us , apparently the had to move the town over a few times because the mine keeps growing and they just dig under and then back fill
