  • Today we visit the Cistercian abbey of Croxden just outside of Uttoxeter. The abbey itself was home to some 70 monks at it's peak and now lies in ruins following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. The site is open to the public daily from 9am-5pm. Note: I incorrectly mention in the video that the site is privately owned but it is now in the care of English Heritage. The site has free entry to the public.

A great video about Croxden Abbey. But at 6m03s you state that Croxden Abbey is privately owned, it is in fact an English Heritage property with free admission.

Wow, I'm surprised my parents never took us here. They were absolutely obsessed with healthy weekend activities, such as long walks or visiting ruins. We never went there. Actually we never went to Bidduplh Grange either, I think I nagged my mother into taking me there later in life!!!
Such a shame that Henry 8th insisted on taking such terrible revenge on the church by attacking the Monasteries and Abbeys. We would have such a tremendous heritage, if he had just absorbed their estates into royal land.
