As someone who couldn't know less about music I love hearing about this stuff.
You're alive!
Woah.
I love ur channel
yo
Alex Yard makes understanding music theory easier!
8:17 Sonic 3 did the “oh no..... anyways” meme before anyone else did.
I absolutely lost it here XD
Sonic 3 predicted Jeremy Clarkson's signature snark.
What a timeline.
Oh no!
ANYWAYS-
You know, I always felt embarrassed that I liked this music so much when I was a kid.
I now realise that it was really really well written - and that's why I liked it. They fit the environment, the story, the mood so well.
same same same same but my jerk friend gets onto me for being "obsessed" with this stuff
Video game music is remarkable, and only with age have I grown more unabashedly in love with it.
I'm sad. Not because of the melancholic tune of Act 2, but because I'm binge watching these videos and I'm nearly at the end 😭
same :(
Yeah I watched one and then BAM I immediately watched the rest back to back. I’m also a musician that loves playing video games so this channel is directly up my alley I can’t believe it! The explanations about the theory here are so well articulated he makes it seem effortless. And when he ties it back into sonic game and production lore OH BOY 🙌💥💯
I’m on my third, and reading your comment is a nice reminder to take a break after this
X-D :’-(
Watch the end of the video something did cheer me up ohus a funny sonic popped up that cheered me up
@@personM4N I think it's my third time also
Always love seeing these videos pop up in my recommended. Keep up the great work man!
Your here too!?!?
@@YoshiLikesFate i mean he was technically in the video lmao
@@Kylirr and this video was recommended to him
There's no doubt that the bassline of Angel Island Act 2 it's probably the most aggressive and complex bassline of the entire game, always changing and increasing the chaotic feeling of the song. Awesome review, Alex!
The Sonic 3 beta that was leaked featured an early version of the act 2 theme that is significantly slower, unpolished, and most importantly, features that chilling second melody much more prominently. I had never been able to hear it before, but thanks to that beta I am in love with this song. Thanks so much for bringing attention to it in this video.
All those tremolos also help the synth sound more like a steel drum, fitting the level's tropical theme.
10:30 listen I'm not saying that it isn't melancholy at all. *but* hearing the cheesy 16-bit tuba (which i know is supposed to be a type of sad sax) just made me laugh so hard my goddamn parents woke up XD
gosh the sonic fandom never disappoints, absolutely loved this episode!
They disappoint in twitter lol
9:50 I've been waiting for someone to notice this part ever since watching carpathia's Angel Island video. I know nothing of music theory, but I'm ecstatic that someone can see the nuances of this game's stellar soundtrack.
10:14 i have no idea how i've NEVER noticed that 2nd melody, in alll my years of listening to this tune. and thanks to you i will never unhear it again, THANK YOU
I hated my music theory class in college for it was too complicated for me to comprehend, but after listening to your video, I actually understood your explanations
That's because he uses video game music so it's fun
In the Sonic 3 prototype, when you approach the Angel Island act 1 cutscene, right after the forest is burnt, the Act 2 music plays, instead of the Act 1 theme.
The transition at 4:23 with act 2 back to act 1 is under appreciated
8:18 this part is like "oh no the whole forest is burning, lets play joyful music"
While I may not understand a darn thing about music theory, this has been an enjoyable watch.
You know you enjoy content when it pops up in your subscription feed and you publicly say "Ooooh, a new Music Theory Video"
i just found out about this channel today and then bam a new video already
The pace change of the second act music always makes me think. "Go. No time to explore, just go." and I always abided.
8:24 Very attentive. No one around me seems to ever notice this.
10:21 the first 3 minutes of every carpathia808 video.
What's interesting about the act transitions is that initially, Angel Island's Act 2 did start playing after the firebombing cutscene, and this was something they changed for the final game. Of course, it may have been an unintentional side effect as the code that they modified is universal.
Also I wanted to say I really appreciate the work you've done on this series and every that video has been enjoyable!
It's beautiful how a story can be told through music without words. I'm not an expert on music theory but just listening to Act 1's music compared to Act 2's, I had a feeling that some minor notes were put in it that made it sound sadder.
That Endless Mine motif was an interesting find. I listened to both Angel Island Act's music many times and never noticed it.
Truly Inspirational
That's why classic boi is the best modern boi is just rock.
Rip the jungle 10:14, it sounded so good but was really cruel
I am such a Sonic nerd (I'm actually proud of that). I got so giddy when you talked about the tremolo notes. And you keep mentioning other youtubers I watch (especially carpathia). Yup you got yerself a new follower
Playing this game when I was young and listening to sonic3 music over and over again is so fascinating......This collection is a treasure!!
I am in love with your videos! As someone that would record the game music from my grandparents place 2 hours away, I would ware that cassette tape
9:54 I legitimately never heard those notes before, and still couldn't until you isolated them out. Thanks for that.
invite cybershell over to watch the rest of sopranos, I have it on good authority that he is a good cuddler
ua-cam.com/video/v5RNETS474o/v-deo.html
Angel island act 1 is my favorite sonic 3 song, just seems so cheery and lush, full of mystery and life...then it gets burned down- and I think I love act 2 aswell 😭
I couldn’t be happier that UA-cam randomly suggested this channel. Love it love it love it!
Really enjoy what you’ve done here. Made me realise why I loved the music in sonic as much as I did/do. There was some very clever production work put in to all music in the sonic games and it especially shows on this soundtrack. It’s hard to come to terms with the idea that 1 person composed it… various layered instruments, a bassline, and layered rhythm sections - it’s nothing short of musical genius in my opinion…
It's so refreshing to see an analytic take on the music I grew up with for 20 years. Thanks for making these videos!
its the brekadown of this soundtracks like this that makes me appreicate how the the composers took pride in thier work.
an amazing soundtrack, that's always full of suprises.
Some of my favorite songs come from the Legend of Zelda games, and Zelda also brought me into the world of the ocarina, which is my favorite instrument 😉
This has got to be one of the best videos I've watched in my life. I really loved it, thank you very much!
bruh, i ve watched a lot of channels about music theory and i always felt confused and lost, but you explain things so well, its the first time i see myself enjoying content like that
I've waited to long until someone finally made a music theory video about Sonic 3! I absolutely love this, good job man
A lot of what you say goes over my head because I just lack the understanding. But you highlight the creativity which goes into the music and that I truly appreciate you doing for us.
I’m a guitarist who hasn’t been forced to learn music theory yet against his will, and this has helped me understand music just a tad bit more. Love that you did a video like this! Act 2’s music always gave me a sort of classical guitar feel(back then I couldn’t describe it as knew jack shit about guitars lol.), which also reminded me of Sonic unleashed, which is one of my favorites lol.
These videos have me thinking about the sonic 3 ost in ways I never would've imagined, the sheer depth of interesting quirks these tracks have is insane, and how you manage to bring it all to the surface so gracefully in your videos is fascinating to say the least, keep up the amazing work!
10:44 made me regret setting that sound as the SMS sound on my phone months ago... I jumped in my seat, thinking I didn't have my phone on silent at 12am 😂
Anyone else genuinely enjoy the music theory videos?
The way you explain music is wonderful. Your visualizations teach the concepts you're trying to explain extremely well.
It might be because Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) was my favorite classic Sonic game at the time, but I feel like Angel Island zone is as memorable a first zone song as Green Hill Zone is, if not even more.
Wow after watching some of videos it just made me hate myself for not learning music theory. This stuff is amazing!
The tremolo technique in Angel Island is probably to simulate the sound of a Steel Drum, to give that tropical vibe to it. While the Mario example sounds more like old-western salloon music.
I love these videos so much! Music is definitely super cool (especially in Sonic games) and watching people analyze them is awesome! Keep up the amazing work, man!
dude this is why i love sonic 3, i also specifically love those ending notes in angel island act 1, the full climax
Can I suggest Hydrocity Zone next?
Edit: Or Carnival Night, that would be interesting
I forgot how great the music is in those games. Sonic 3 was a masterpiece on the Genesis
9:50 I saw you noticed the Endless Mine motif with the last three notes cut off in the hidden melody. However, one measure before that hides a subtle Endless mine motif with the the first three notes cut off.
It is because of this video that I can appreciate Act 2 a lot more now. Nice job! :D
10:09 I dig the counter melody, but this also plays during the iii vi ii V progression in act one, and it's my favorite part of the tune.
9:41 when I noticed the second melody in the background, I couldn't go back to humming the first. It pains me that I don't have two voices to hum both at the same time.
The amount of style that this game had for its time is amazing
"Peaceful orderliness suitable for calm normalcy"
What the heck man
0:53 sigh...its so sad what happened to Tom Brier. The guy was an absolute beast on the piano.
In my over ten years on this site, this is one of my favorite videos.
We know that Tomonori Sawada didn't compose Angel Island- he was messaged about this a few years back and confirmed that his only contribution to Sonic 3&K was the Sonic 3 title screen music:
imgur.com/o7TQff6
It's extremely likely he composed the prototype IceCap melody as well, considering it's a remix of Crystal Egg Zone.
WHY DON'T YOU HAVE MORE SUBSCRIBERS?!?! YOUR VIDEOS ARE AMAZING!!!
10:22 imagine watching this part and having no clue who cybershell is lmao
These videos are so interesting! I don't even know much about music or the way it's made, but I always learn something new from these. Can't wait for the next music theory video!
Act 2 is just amazing, I've always been humming to the background music for some reason, maybe I like melancholic music.
06:25 So, this wpuld mean we will never be able to listen to the best tracks of Sonic in another game again?
I’ve been following you for a little bit but I came back to watch this video. So insightful, but at the same time so entertaining and edited beautifully. Awesome stuff man!
Very good analysis of the 2 player music in Sonic 3 so far! I've learned quite a lot, and i'm really looking forward to the last one, Chrome Gadget Zone!
That motif is in Sonic 3D blast....the Genesis version. Its on the tip of my tongue I can hear the song in my head! I'm gonna have to go listen to the ost to find it. These videos have been incredible, thank you!
This was an excellent video. Really good work on this.
Good Video
I cannot get enough of these videos. Combination of everything I love
Dude... You analyze the music, you explain the theory but not just that you bring out the little piano and show us exactly what it means.
I fucking love that.
This is perfect, i love the breakdown of the notes
11:23 There we can also recognize this motive from Mystic Caves 2-player music from Sonic 2 and in Death Egg from same Sonic 3
I've never been good at understanding music, or at least, putting what I know into words, so this video helps a lot actually!
Incredible video, great work keep it up!
Music theory and Sonic! You’ve got my sub.
I love your videos you just brought me out a depression
I just wanted to thank Cybershell for introducing me to your channel, its great stuff.
Amazing videos, man! I'd love to see more analysis of other S3K songs and also other Sonic games soundtracks that you find interesting.
I do feel like Angel Island resembles Aquatic Ruin in a sense. They have alot of similar characteristics under the hood, especially with the similar chord structure, even when Aquatic Ruin is in a minor key(?).
I love your Sonic 3 music analysis videos! 27 years after I first played it Sonic 3 is still my favorite game of all time.
I have a random suggestion that you can ignore if you want: If you feel like going off the beaten path you could analyze a song from Ecco the Dolphin: Tides of Time. As much as I love the Sonic 3 soundtrack, Tides of Time is my favorite genesis soundtrack and arguably my favorite video game soundtrack period. It fits the game perfectly; it manages to be both inviting and creepy at the same time; vast and oceanic while also tense and claustrophobic. It manages to convey such opposite themes perfectly while retaining both a sense of adventure and a sense of beauty. It's worth looking into!
Love Sonic 3, love Angel Island's music, love this video!
Hiya mate. Thanks for featuring a clip from my channel. Great video. I love all the classic Sonic games so much. Thanks for the channel credit too. Its much appreciated.
I love these videos man, keep it up
wow! this channel is a dream,! I could never imagined someone talking some specific details of this songs, all my life asked those question but I felt nobody in the world could be interested, WRONG!
U are a genious!
You were right about having credits that many people watch to the end. Very engaging with the sheet music
I always loved this first level of the game so much. You go from a nice, peaceful island to a fiery hellstorm waiting to gobble you up because one of Eggman's robots set the island ablaze. It sets a good precedent for the rest of the story.
Also I love how you make frequent references to carpathia's channel. I love that channel lots.
The OST for Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles is easily in my top 5 soundtracks.
you are the only one that I see talking deeply about sonic music, that's all what I was looking for
10:15 Omg so good i kept replaying 😭
something i visulised is that in act 2 once you get to the epic part with the tremolo, you are probably near water. so when the notes go down it feels like the fire is dying down, but soon later the fire is back and thats when it rises to finish the piece.
When act 1 helps you relax while act 2 makes you think about life...
Id like to see you cover some of the music theory behind some of Sonic 3D Blast's tracks, specifically the ending themes for BOTH versions, Credits for Genesis, and the leitmotif for Youre My Hero in Saturn. Both those songs instill this weird finality feel to me in very different ways that Id like to see how you explain for someone like me, who knows NOTHING about music
your channel makes me smile
This is such a high quality. I don't understand how you only have 2.4k subs
Love these videos, would like to see you analyze some boss music sometime.
The second melody is the prototype themes mane music that you wold hear but the prototype theme was slower and it was played with a kind of woodwind instermint
Great video!
These videos are amazing.
