I love sailing at night. When I’m in waters where I’m very confident there’s nothing to hit. And the moon is shining. And I’m not almost dead from fatigue 😅
214th tag-along view... here we go... "AHHH... more drone footage!!" For what it's worth: following a 30-day LUNAR cycle/calendar for timekeeping, the full moon always indicates the middle of the month; and is always the "2nd '7th' - or 'Shabbat' - A Day of Rest". How appropriate that your adventure captured this evening sail. Sailing in the dark of night would give me great pause - seems scary: to sail blindly, without being able to SEE where you're going at SEA. 48th LIKE posted at the segment beginning at 8:26. Cheers & SHALOM!
Great videos as always. Those barges and tugs are huge! Funny how they creep up on you even though they are going very slowly! Especially loving current videos as we are doing a very similar trip right now in our 2001 Oyster 56. Took yr advice and dropped into Banyuwedang ... lovely! Don't suppose you could share where you overnighted between Belitung and Malaysia? Started watching yr videos a good few years ago, never really thought we'd be sailing in the same waters behind you. Life is funny like that! Cheers Derek & Letitia SY Mary Doll
Thanks for the video! Some of my most beautiful memories while at sea was of nights with a full moon. Usually I was the only one up. The beauty and peace compensated for the tiredness I felt sometimes.
For some reason, the highlight of this episode for me was that absolutely gorgeous local fishing boat sighted as you approached the island. I'd love to know more about it.
After the recent loss of life of sailors, Brett Clibbery and Sarah Packwood, I've wondered if you take an EPIRB and grab bag with you when you leave Esper in your dinghy? I'm not trying to be out of line it's just that their passing has weighed heavily on my mind. Thanks for sharing your night sailing.
We have an Epirb next to the top of the companionway and a couple of grab bags. Their tragedy brings home to all of us just how vulnerable we are in our small boats. 😞 You have to be CONSTANTLY vigilant, especially at night. I like an offsfhore night sail. Its to much like hard work to do a coastal night sail when boat lights get lost in shore lights and lobsterpots are not visable.
We were using the chart plotter with repeaters in the cockpit and wifi connectivity on our phones showing AIS targets. The radar stopped working, but is a very useful tool. Both these systems need to be used in conjunction with proper Mk1 eyeball and vigilant 360° sweeps at least every 15 minutes. Liz 🙏
Okay. I had just noticed in a couple of shots that the chart plotter at the helm had its cover on. I did not think about it all being tied to your phones as well. My bad!
Hi both - are you planning to pass by Raffles Marina? The best Marina in Singapore ;) ? We (Koen and Bella - have been watching your channel for years, and would love to buy you lunch, dinner and beers/wine...

Hehe. When the conditions are right, you can't beat it!
The night sailing was awesome; good seeing the locals and some of their culture
Hopefully we'll have more of both next week too, Jerome 👍
So wonderful! Thank you!
Cheers Jeff
Pleasure, Jeff. Glad you liked it.

The other weird thing at night is how much closer everything seems! Liz 🙏

Ahh, the calm and quiet of an evening sail made easier by a mostly full moon. Thanks for the journey! All best.

The fishing boats on this side of the planet are amazing, each unique in style to its island/village. You could do a whole study of them. ❤️ Liz
I've been following you for years. I love Indonesia too, and now you are returning to Malaysia again!? Looking forward to this.
Cheers, George!

@followtheboat Thank you. That eases my mind knowing how mindful you are.

Pots and, worse than that, nets a mile long are a real pita
Absolutely beautiful!
I'm curious though, why you weren't using your chart plotter and radar? Seems like those would be very helpful at night.
