How I used up A LOT of yarn SCRAP-GHANS! (a recording from 2021)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2024
- PLEASE READ: I recorded this video one year ago in February 2021. I originally uploaded it to my first YT Channel, Makeup Fun With Olivia (a place for makeup lovers over the age of 40). It was during the COVID-19 pandemic and I wasn't using much makeup but had lots of time to revive my old love of crochet and knit. I did a few more videos about my love of yarn last year and finally decided to start a new YT channel - and so this channel - Fiber Fun WIth Olivia, was born.
I decided to upload this video here because it gets a lot of views and comments and I want to keep up and reply to the new comments. (Sadly, I don't log on to my makeup channel much anymore because I don't use or buy much makeup anymore).
Anyway, to my fiber loving friends, if you haven't yet seen this video, I hope you enjoy! And if you did see it last year - feel free to skip it or re-enjoy.
Thank you for watching and for your lovely comments!
xoxo
~Olivia

Hi Olivia....I was browsing through UA-cam and came across this video. I absolutely love it! I have taken a quick peek at you other videos and I really think I'm going to enjoy your Channel. I've just subscribed and clicked on the notification bell. Oh and I hit the LIKE icon. I've made a scrapghan before and I loved doing it. Love yours🤗🤗
Hello Shiela! So happy you found me - thank you for watching, subbing, hitting that like button and commenting! Very kind of you and it all means so much. 🥰 Aren't scrapghans so much fun? And the great thing is any pattern you like can become a scrapghan pattern! Thank you again and have a lovely weekend and week! xoxo
Beautiful blankets!
Thank you so much! 💕🙏🏽
Thank you for sharing these free patterns and also the designers who put them on ravelry.
Hi Rebecca! It's my pleasure! Happy you liked them. Thank you for watching and commenting! xoxo
Love your colorful blankets and love scrap projects myself! Been pondering designing a multi-stitch blanket; since I also like texture and how each section pops on larger projects. Especially when combined with different colored yarn and also brands. 💕
Hi Helene! Thank you so much! Oooooh you have me intrigued! Please keep me posted! 😬 You always have fun stitches. (I was just the other day thinking of making another scarf that you designed - that I made before but can't remember the name of at the moment, LOL). 🤪 xoxo
Thanks for sharing your beautiful blankets. You have inspired me to use up my scraps. I hope you have a fabulous weekend!! I’m a new subscriber and really enjoyed your video.

Hi Carol! Thank you so much! 🙏🏼 It makes me so happy to hear that I have inspired you and others to use up some stashed yarn to make a blanket. Have a wonderful weekend and thank you again for watching and commenting! xoxo 🥰

Hi Mary! Yay, I’m glad you liked the patterns and hope you try them (let me know if you do!). Thank you for watching and commenting! xoxo
Thanks for sharing this. I needed to hear it. I have the same one ball odd skeins that i thought were pretty and never used or made a hat and have half of it left. I'm inspired now. Love all three of your scrapgans and the three patterns. I just need to pick one now and go for it.
Hi Susan! Sometimes choosing the pattern takes me longer than making it! LOL! Yes, give it a try and let me know how it goes. I just know you will enjoy it! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
Hi! New to your channel & great timing as I am planning a super colorful large throw for my stash, thanks for the pattern references - they will be very useful. The blankets you made are beautiful. Your triangle scarf is gorgeous! I may need to make one of those as well. Thank you!
Hi Mercedes! Welcome to the Fiber Fun Familia! ooooh a super colorful large throw sounds like so much fun! Thank you for sharing snd I loved all three blankets , I subscribed!! I love mosaic crochet and have alot of left overs !!
Hi Pat! Mosaic crochet is so lovely. I’ve never tried it because it intimidates me. But they are so colorful, right up my alley, so I really do need to try it. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
Beautiful blankets & what fun to utilize stash yarm
Hi Pam! Thank you so much! It sure is fun to destash some of our yarn! Thank you for watching and commenting! xoxo
Those are lovely blankets. I have been planning to reduce my stash and not buy any more until I am at least 2/3 down - well, that's what I am *trying* to do. Most of my stash is odd skeins I have bought online to see what the yarn is like, so naturally, I have planned to make a scrap blanket one day. I just needed a pattern, which you have kindly provided.
Not everyone can afford to buy beautiful and baby soft yarn, but they have to rely on what they can buy from drift stores or get donations. Those blankets may not have the perfect colors or color combinations, but they are always beautiful because of the love and effort that went into making them and they will keep someone warm no matter how they look!
Hello! You are so right - if they are made with love that alone makes blankets special. Let me know if you end up trying one of the blanket patterns. They kept me interested (not bored) without being too complicated. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
Thank you, your vid was inspiring. It’s time for me to get out all that scrap yarn and get crocheting :)
Hi Nina! DO IT! 😜😂🥰 (just call me your handy dandy fiber fun enabler! LOL) xoxo

Hi Tricia! Aww thank you so much for your lovely comment - that made my day! I’m glad I helped - yes jumó in like I did- I don’t think you will regret it. Just keep choosing colors that make you happy. I think that is the trick! ☺️ Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
I love this idea about using up stash this way. I started a lot of afghans I just need finish them
Hi Sissy! I can be scary at first but just jump in! Stash busting is a tricky business for me. It can’t be too boring but not too complicated either. I found these just right! Thank you for watching and commenting! xoxo

Thanks so much for sharing and love watching you on UA-cam 👍👍❤️🙏🏻
Hi Hasumati! Aren’t they so fun to make? I enjoyed these so much! Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment! 💕🙏🏽
Love those left over yarn afghans. I have just randomly chosen your channel by because I need to make more afghans for my family and I love using up my stash of one of a kind skeins. Yours turned out beautifully.
Hi Eileen! Thank you so much! Yes the family really likes the blankies- I need to make more too! 😂 Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
Wow. These patterns would be great for my 'use up your stash' goal. I calculated that I have Iver 10 years worth of just worsted weight yarn
Let me know if you try one of them DH! Yup I have yarn at least that old as well. I think it’s why it felt so good to finally use it! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
Love the blankets. Thanks for sharing. I might do a blanket sounds like fun.
Thank you! They were so fun to make and now to use! Let

I am so happy that I came across your video. I too enjoy crocheting Afghans with texture! The plane single crochet or double crochet row after row it's fine, but I try to find the patterns that give me the most designs with the most textures. Your Afghans are beautiful! I subscribed to your channel just now and will continue to follow you. Thank you so much. I live in Hurst Texas.
Hi Paulette! Thank you so much! I agree completely - I need some extra texture in there to keep it interesting. Plus I love how it turns out. Thank you again for watching and commenting! xoxo 🙏🏼
Thano you so much for the idea I have a few yarn I'm not inspired about when I have time after I finish paid blanket I will use the yarn in project you recommend. I was going to do it but you show and tell gave me a visual 💋💋💜💜🐶stay safe and huge hugs
Hi Jane! Yes! I encourage you to use those skeins you’re not crazy about in between other skeins you do love. I hope you try it - let me know if you do! Thank you for watching and commenting! xoxo
Scrapghans are awesome. I've made a couple. But most recently I use my scraps for amigurumi. My family is way into them!
Hello Charmed Grammy! Amigurumi is so fun and a great way to use up scrap yarn. What kind do you make for your family? My kiddos love Pokémon stuff. And I want to make a couple of Halloween 🎃 amigurumis soon. So many projects and not enough hours! 🤭 Thank you so much for watching and for commenting! xoxo
You are so talented! I don't even dare to try because I'm not an experienced crocheter and I'm sure that my shaping would be all over the place even when following a simple pattern.
@@oakstrong1 not at all you’d be surprised how much you can do just by watching instructional YT videos!
My family lyrics friend gave me bags of yarn when her mother passed on. I crocheted and my mother knit 5" squares into a crazy wuilt queen bedspread. My home helper appearantly needed it more than she thought I did.
Hi Jeannie! Wow what a gift to receive the very loved yarn of someone else. I'm sorry you didn't get to keep the make though, hehe! I would definitely take that as a compliment - it must have been beautiful. Your comment reminds me of when I first started knitting and I lived in Florida. I went to a local yarny group and one of their group friends had died and her husband came to the meet and donated all of her knitting needles and notions. I thought that was such a lovely gesture, to give them to the friends that would appreciate and use them. 🥰
I love your blanket. The colors are pretty
Hi Maggie! Thank you so much! 🙏🏽💗
Hello. So glad I found your awsome channel. It made me feel great watching your beautiful blankets. I think they are all gorgeous. I also love crocheting blankets and yes they are so warm in the winter to crochet. I just finished a granny blanket with the flower in the middle with my left over yarn and it's one of my favourite. I cannot wait to see what else you are going to make. Yarn makes me feel so "fuzzy" so I always have to buy the odd ball. 😄🤗🥰
Hi Teresa! Yarn makes me feel fuzzy inside too. 🥰 Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment. xoxo

I always tell people I’ve got more yarn than I’ll ever be able to knit in my lifetime, but maybe this will change that! My daughter just moved off to college, so I think I’ll make a blanket for her to use in her dorm room!

@@fiberfunwitholivia You’re very welcome! I’m glad I found you! Hi Chris - welcome to the channel! Thank you - I love how the blankets came out and highly recommend trying it with all the yarn your sweet friend brings you. What I like about the patterns is that for one or two rows you do the same stitch and then the next few rows change so you never get bored doing the same stitches. Let me know if you try it! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
I'm always looking for different patterns to use up my enormous amount of stash, so thank you for the links. I have made The Felix Blanket (free pattern on Ravelry), which is a C2C concept using only stash and it didn't even make a dent! I've also purchased a couple of patterns that are more patchwork-like. They come out beautiful! I'd love to see more of what you do with your stash.
Hi Michelle! I had never heard of the Felix blanket or C2C but I looked it up and it is such an interesting concept! I would imagine that would be a great blanket to make as a mindless project where you don’t have to think about it much. I have to catch up on my Ombre blanket and finish it before I begin another though. At least that’s what I’m telling myself! 🤭😜 Thank you so much for watching and commenting and for sharing that new blanket technique with me! xoxo
I love the way your blankets turned out. I have some colors that were given to me that I will probably not use for a project so I started a moss stitch blanket using some of them. separating the colors with soft white. I've gathered my variegated yarns and will start another stash buster blanket for them. Haven't decided on the pattern yet.
Hi Rebecca! I love how colorful moss stitch projects come out and putting a soft white in between will make it even lovelier! 😍 Thank you for watching and for commenting! xoxo

Just come to see your video for the first time, sad fallen in love with your blankets, I get confused about worsted weight yarns, I'm in the UK. You have given me an excuse to use all my too just yarn up. Thank you x
Hi Kandy! I'm so glad I've motivated you to use up your yarn! Yes! Just do it! And then come back and share! 🥰
I am making a scrapghan, now, for our prayer shawl ministry. I am knitting (I also crochet) and I enlisted the help of our group to get scraps...but everyone had full skeins! So I just picked yarns on the basis of the colors I had already used...and I'll pretend they're scraps. Of course, now they will turn into scraps...but, oh well!
That is wonderful! I’m sure your knit scrapghan will turn out lovely and will be very appreciated. 💕 I consider scraps anything you need to destash. 😊 Sometimes it’s one or a few different balls of yarn that you can’t use with any other project so you put all those balls together and you’ve got your scrapghan! 😊😊Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
New subbie! Love the video!
Hello Ms Ophelia! Thank you so much & welcome to the Fiber Fun Familia! 💕 xoxo
It’s beautiful
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽💕
I have been making a concerted effort lately of using up my yarn. I organized my totes, yes I have to use totes to store my lovelies, by category. I have one for trial pieces I'm going to reuse, one for just verigated yarn, one for smallish bits and several for new yarn based on color category. When I finally was able to get everything sorted I started using them in several patterns I found. My favorites so far are: side saddle stitch, granny spike stitch, cozy stripe pattern, and a new one called a pique stitch. I make my afghan on a more personal size so they are easy to carry, store and mail to loved ones. I'm so glad I am getting organized and actually working thru my stash. Your blankets are lovely, love that you call yours wrangled. what part of the country are you in. I live in southerntier of NY state, and it gets chilly here 8 months of the year, good to be covered in yarn, whether in an afghan I've made or one in progress.
Hi Ruth! Wow you are so very organized - that is great! I try to organize by yarn weight but then when I go looking for yarn for a project I mess it all up again! LOL You mention some pretty stitches there (I had to look some up). I am cracking up that you liked that I used the word wrangled! 🤣 I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in California (although I lived in Florida for a few years too) so maybe my vocabulary is all over! LOL I've never been to NY but do plan to visit next year (the kiddos want to go) so I'm excited about that. San Francisco gets quite chilly but not snow chilly (you have to go up north a couple of hours for that) but I do enjoy the cloudy weather so I can snuggle with my yarny projects. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
That is great. If you do stop by NYState, try to visit Watkins Glen NY. Great park to walk thru the glen, and Seneca lake is 2 blocks away.

Hi from down under. Thank you for showing your beautiful blankets. I would never have put those colours together yet they are gorgeous. I mainly use 8 ply with double strands and some chunky leftovers because I've only started knitting again after 30 years. Would you have patterns for leftover yarns using different plys?

Hi, new subscriber here ❤️❤️❤️
Welcome new subscriber!! 💕💕 Thank you so much for visiting and commenting. xoxo
Why would you want to de-stash? Lol! Liked and subbed.
😂😂 Touché! Thank you for liking and subbing! 🙏🏽💕 xoxo
Thank you Olivia. Saw the words "Stash buster". Mine is over the top. I'm not a big shawl wearer so dont knit them. And I'm stuck on a waffle weave crochet blanket from donated yarn, intended for the homeless which I havent finished. Due to the different plyes the edges arnt straight. Which I should have realised. My bad. Any suggestion to remedy the edges. Or just pull out ?
Hi Judith! I think it is so wonderful that you are making valets for the homeless. 💕 In my very humble opinion, you can totally fix the edge unevenness by making an edge where you adjust what stitch you put where, if that makes sense. There is a shirt video here that speaks to this: ua-cam.com/video/rhT8KElEIgg/v-deo.html I hope it helps! Keep me posted.
So how many stitches/chains did u start with? I never start right either to big or to small
Hi Beverly! I did follow the pattern on how many stitches to begin with - I can’t remember anymore - but they are free patterns and I linked them in the description box of you wanna take a peek. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
Love the idea of using up stash yarn but my question is are you using 100% wool (nonwashable) because that would be difficult to wash?
Hi Sherryl! Yes! I used superwash and just regular 100% wool. I knew I would be risking it and I was ok with that. So far it has not felted or made the blanket wonky as long as I wash it with cold water in my machine and then hang dry (which I do over my shower sliding door). I can’t speak to all yarn but maybe because it’s all interweaves with the other yarns it’s has been ok now for a few years. I hope that helps! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
Hi isn't it hard to keep changing colors? I am a beginner and not sure how to change colors so frequently. Thank you for the video. This reminds me of a patchwork quilt.
Hi Linda! What a great question. I supposed it depends on your preferences as a crocheter. For me, I didn't have a repeating order of colors and I just went with it so I didn't have to track the colors. And I did have ends to weave - what I did was just crochet over them as I crocheted the edge. That way I didn't have to weave them in, hehe! 😉😂. I hope that makes sense. Another thing I've seen people do is leave long ends so you can use them as fringe (if you like fringes). Thank you so much for watching and commenting! xoxo
All three of your blankets are nice, but my favorite is the last one where I think you used worsted yarn.
Thank you so much! 🥰 xoxo
Please consider donating machine washable yarn to nursing homes. There are knitters and crocheters there who have no money buy yarn!
Once a person uses up their assets to pay for their care, the state pays but takes their Social Security. They give them only about $30 a month which has to pay for haircuts, some personal hygiene items and new clothing!
Great advice for us all! You are so right! (I'm happy to report I do donate yarn I just don't talk about it on this channel). Thank you for your kind comment! xoxo
