    Lyrics:
    Stand!
In the end you'll still be you
One that's done all the things you set out to do
    Stand!
There's a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you're going anywhere
    Stand!
For the things you know are right
It's the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
    Stand!
All the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no deal
    Stand! Stand! Ooh!
    Stand! Stand! Ooh!
    Ooo ooo stand!
You've been sitting much too long
There's a permanent crease in your right and wrong
    Stand
    There's a midget standing tall
And a giant beside him about to fall
    Stand! Stand! Ooh!
    Stand! Stand! Ooh!
    Ooo ooo stand!
They will try to make you crawl
And they know what you're saying makes sense and all
    Stand!
Don't you know that you are free
Well at least in your mind if you want to be
    Everybody
    Stand! Stand!
Stand! Na na na na na na na na na nah
Stand! Na na na na na na na na na nah
Stand! Na na na na na na na na na nah
Stand! Na na na na na na na na na nah
Stand! Na na na na na na na na na nah

I play this song almost every day in the physical therapy gym and it always makes me cry! I had a stroke four months ago and was paralyzed on my left side. So when my therapists tell me to STAND! I put this song on and then I can do it, with tears streaming down my face! I love sharing this song with everyone else, too! We are all trying hard to stand! I'm in a rehab hospital right now and this song is very powerful! ❤️💪🏼💪🏼

Our minds and bodies are amazingly-fragile, yet amazingly-RESILIENT! Our brains have a type of plasticity that cannot be beaten. I acknowledge your struggles, your losses, your efforts, your accomplishments, and your VICTORIES. Do whatever you can to encourage the innate neuroplasticity that is in dynamic action, now and always. This song is a great piece of inspiration to me, as well - and also within the exact same environment as you're in - when I had to relearn how to walk [and talk], years ago. Your post hits-home in a completely unexpected way today. Thank you for sharing - and while there may be a few plateaus, there will always be an ongoing recovery-process which will surprise you.

I was eleven years old when this song came out. But I didn't discover it until I was about thirteen, my freshman year of high school. My history teacher, Mrs. Fox, a middle aged white woman, played and analyzed it for us in class one day. I went to a racially mixed high school in Michigan. Mrs. Fox was, I think, in her 50s. She had a couple of grown kids, I think a son had been to Nam. You'd never know by her looks, but this white woman was straight radical. This was late 1970, early 1971. Her favorite phrase was, "do not grow up to be a spineless jellyfish". I'll never forget her saying that, constantly. Speak up and speak out. So, this middle aged white woman who I assumed listened to old Sinatra and maybe Perry Como songs, decided to teach the class the art of standing up and standing firm, through a record by Sly and the Family Stone. "Stand". There are some days at school you never forget, no matter the grade, class or year. This was one of those days. Mrs. Fox played that record and stopped it after every line, to make sure we knew exactly what Sly was saying and what he meant. In short, Sly was saying, "don't be a spineless jellyfish". I lost touch with Mrs Fox, but I'll never forget that middle aged, radical white woman. She believed everyone had balls and they'd better damn well use them. Authority was sometimes just another way of saying 'in the way.' Next to my parents, she was one of the most radical adults I listened to on a constant basis in my youth. And I never had a class with her after my freshman year. But that one year with her was unforgettable. She was ahead of her time in questioning our U.S. History classroom books. If I remember correctly, she had mixed feelings about Nam, and her kid being there. I'm 65 and retired now, but I'll never forget that day middle aged Mrs. Fox brought to class a recording of the greatest song ever written and performed. Thank you, Mrs. Fox

Now 68 I'm proud to say this was my time and the 60's were one of the greatest if not the greatest decades for music. It will never happen again, and current generations will never get it! The black & white boundaries were there yeah... but music helped break them down. This will always be my favorite Sly tune. Simply a great tune...but the end jam is just Bad Ass... Forever Sly!

Woo-Hoo... ask a f*cking 23 year old who Sly is. And if/when you get to 65 you'll have the right to express all the arrogance you want also. Although not sure where the arrogance even plays into my comment. Facts are facts!

Now I understand why I spent 15 years of training for a healthy lifestyle change. And ended up finishing my Amateur Athletic career, Training 3 years to complete the project. Then Attempted to compete & finish the 141.6 miles of serious work ahead of you! So I thank God I was able to do

This was when people, my generation, were sick and tired of all the wrongs that we faced everyday and we needed them to end, for the sake of humanity. Message music. Unfortunately the powers that be were not having it, so along came "crack" and other forms of destruction. Now look at what we have. Self-hate being spewed by the young and they think it's "cool".

If the last 50 seconds of this song doesn’t make you get off your feet and dance, you have no Soul. This song is perfect, the lyrics and composition. “There’s a permanent crease in your right and wrong.” It’s pure eargasmic. All the original members are alive except Cynthia. I would to see them run it back one more time.

More relevant today than ever! Funny how I lived through the first revolution, and now I'm living to see this one. It began with us, brothers and sisters..and now it's up to you to carry the torch. Never forget..that God in God's infinite wisdom created us ALL. Stand for justice, stand for humanity to learn to live and learn from one another- in peace.

The BEST live concert I ever attended (and there were many) was with Sly & the Family Stone, in 1971. You didn't just go, you were a PARTICIPANT! There was at least 10 feet of snow outside, on a Tuesdsy night. The show didn't stop until they had come back for encores FOUR times! We were up stomping and screaming for more. The last song was "STAND"! in Indianapolis, Indiana--could you blame us? That show wasn't over until 4am. Will never forget it!!

The next artist that did that was in 1971, Marvin Gaye's masterpiece 'What's Going On'. That was blasted from my parent's apartment window. :-)
