Sly's sister didn't think her voice was good enough to be in the band. Her voice is pitch perfect for this song, followed by Sly and Larry Graham's smooth baritone. Then Cynthia on the horn driving the melody. It doesn't get much better.

You can just hear it in everyone's voices when they sing and it's so palpable.

I was four years old in '69 and music like this stays embedded in my conscience and always brings me back.
My god ; This song brings me to tears each time I hear it; I heard this song as a toddler and I STILL remember it. Now days I really know its power; They were a true super group and it's sad that they didn't REALLY rise to their true potential; So any bands went down that same path. Crushes me soul to this very day yet the music is still so very powerful.

I heard this on Sirius the other day, hearing it for the first time in many decades. God, what an amazing song. The way those four totally different voices shared one line of each verse, allowing each one to shine. Three minutes is just not long enough. I haven't been able to get this song out of my head. This group was the definition of soul.

@Chris - INA: Sorry for the delayed response. I never had an issue with the mainstream media. And our country's history pretty much doomed us to identity politics: Women couldn't vote, black people couldn't vote, poor people were (and sometimes still are) certainly discouraged from voting.

PEOPLE WERE NOT DANCING IN A DECEMBER 2018 CHRISTMAS PARTY UNTIL THIS SONG WAS PLAYED EVERYONE IS A STAR WHICH TURNED THE PARTY INTO HYSTERICAL HAPPINESS IT BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN AND 100 PERCENT WERE DANCING. GREAT SONG.
